Outlines

[Captivating Drawing Macciatto]
First thing to talk about
Isn't Halloween coming up?
So I prepared a maid costume.
Wearing this outfit!
Today I want to talk about character designs.
There are things I wish you never do.
To make your character designs,
at least half decent.
Or if you just do this one thing,
your character becomes a lot better!
I prepared such checkpoints.
First off, what I want to say is
Actually, in Korean game design....
it is not a commonly used term.
Not limiting too much to game design,
about general character design!
Some of you do character designs just for fun, right?
Or in a more Japanese style....
Those who want to design more comfortably!
I think this advice is suitable for them.
Live every Sunday at 6pm.
[First point!] Pick one clear theme.
The rest....
The more freedom, the better.
What I mean is
For example!
If we use Halloween as a theme,
and imagine drawing a witch character.
Then, let's do some brainstorming here.
What do you think of when you hear the word 'witch'?
A witch's hat comes to mind first, right?
And then maybe broomsticks and such?
So when we hear a certain word
there are key points that naturally come to mind.
But the most common mistake
that beginner designers make is,
They try to cover all the points.
Bringing everything about witches!
And then....
Dumping all of them to the character.
The more you do that....
the more boring it becomes.
Obvious.
It'd be better not to do that!
Actually, if I want to draw a witch,
either this or this alone is enough.
There's a minimum required
to connect to a word.
Just reach this bare minimum.
And for everything else,
You have to bring it from somewhere else.
Bring from something completely irrelevant.
For example!
It's okay if it's totally unrelated!
Let's say....
Scissors? Omelette?
Things like that you know!
It's better to bring it from somewhere else.
The more you do that,
the freer the character design becomes,
creating a more fun idea.
If the character I want to design has a distinct personality!
This character is a more calm character!
Things like that, right?
If there's a personality?
It's best to show the personality.
So, show the personality through the clothes.
[Don’t just focus on the theme] Not just a witch,
it's better to show the personality of the character.
Since I've been greatly influenced by Japan,
they also consider this the most important thing.
You don't necessarily have to show the occupation.
What kind of personality does this character have?
What does he/she like?
How has he/she lived his/her life?
They tend to focus more on these things.
So you, too.
Rather than the fact that she's a witch.
What kind of impression do you wish to leave?
Focus on that....
And it might be much better.
If you look at these kind of things.
Just having a broomstick
is enough to show that she's a witch.
It's surprisingly straightforward, right?
There's really no need to....
Put on a hat too.
And draw a cat.
The more you do, the more obvious it becomes.
Rather in this situation,
using the minimum items.
[Macciatto] Focus on the posture,
facial expression or....
Seeing this character likes to wear these clothes
you can sort of guess her personality.
Think more about these things.
The design becomes much more sensible.
So, the first thing.
[One clear theme only] What I want to say is this.
Live every Sunday at 6pm
The second point is!
Do not use more than three design elements.
What I mean is....
For example, when we design
we use a couple of elements.
Well, typically....
Patterns.
What kind of shapes we use.
Or silhouettes.
Such things.
Do not use too many of these.
For example,
This picture seems like
it has too many such things.
So for this second point,
Where does the mistake come from?
Let's say we got past the first point.
There's this desire to draw something unique.
To think of something others can't think of.
So bringing all the random things in the world.
So it's like....
Let's start from the top.
[Draw a horn] Start by drawing this.
Should I draw the hand uniquely?
Put this kind of pattern here.
They don't want to use the same element.
For instance,
I found this very impressive.
This character has lace on its neck,
but this lace doesn't appear again elsewhere.
And these torn-looking elements,
they don't show up again either.
They think using these elements more than once,
might look like
they're bad at designing.
That's what they end up thinking.
Trying too hard not to use the same elements.
But that's actually where you're wrong.
In fact, you should not do it that way
Within a maximum of about
three to four elements,
it is better to reuse them.
That is much better.
[First revision] First off, this lace.
I think let's go without it.
But....
You might think,
"I don't want to leave the neck bare!"
So what do we do!
Use something that's already used elsewhere!
Let's try using this again, on the neck.
But that does not mean to completely copy-paste this.
I'm saying to reinterpret it with slight changes.
I'm not saying to use it exactly the same way.
There is a transparent apple here.
Don't just use this once.
It would have been so much better if you can see all of them here!
So, everyone.
The usual mistake is,
drawing a lot around here.
But from around here,
there's nothing to draw....
Can't make something up anymore....
I can't think of what to fill in here.
This is quite common.
There is really no need to think that way.
You can use what you've used before!
The more you force new things,
and the more you put different things together,
the more random your drawing looks.
From the viewer's perspective, you can't really tell the theme.
Rather like this.
The more elements there are, the harder it is to understand.
But what if we use some repetition?
Drawing itself becomes easier.
Rather than coming up with something new,
You can just reuse what you used before!
From the viewer's perspective,
the theme becomes clearer, which is better!
Live every Sunday at 6 PM.
The third point is! Patterns are grouped together.
What does that mean?
When people see something, if something repeats, see?
Then, they think of these as a set!
Why? To save energy.
Each one of these,
there is one circle,
another circle here,
The moment you perceive it this way,
think about how much brain resources would be wasted.
So....
It's more like times six.
We tend to shorten things to perceive things.
So, what does it mean?
I drew a lot of it....
But it doesn't look much....
I drew six of them,
but viewers consider this as one.
Commonly, we say the density looks low.
I'm not saying never use patterns.
When you use a pattern,
you should know that
patterns are generally considered as one.
So, this picture here is a case with too many patterns.
Things like this.
I understand that such designs do exist,
Still, it would be better to cut it here.
Personally, what I like about this is,
The belt creates a separation here.
At least, this part and this part...
are perceived as different densities.
But from here to here, feels a little boring.
Therefore, when using repeating patterns,
it's better to create something that breaks the flow of patterns.
Actually, look at this.
There is a pattern here too.
The reason why patterns keep appearing is....
During our design process,
we try to fill in the density too much.
Nowadays,
the trend in art is "increase the density first."
You must have heard about this a lot!
Especially those who do game illustrations!
So, we feel the need to increase the density.
But changing it every time might look too chaotic,
like I said before, do not use too many different elements.
So they choose to repeat the same thing.
Then, it's easier for me and,
I don't have to think more!
It makes it easier for the person to draw!
So, when forced to fill the density,
lots of repetitive designs come up.
But if you look here, these parts get grouped together.
These parts.
As I mentioned a moment ago,
even if you cut it just once in the middle,
The two sides tend to separate!
So, using that,
I'll cut the pattern in the middle!
There are various ways to break the pattern.
All you have to do is to create something different.
Anything is fine!
[Separate by adding color to one part] Just doing this alone,
Makes it one, two, three. Like this.
Similarly, shall we change the color for this one, too?
Isn't it a little fresher?
It somehow became less boring, right?
If it were up to me, I'd rather remove these down here completely!
Instead, take out this red fabric.
Cut it here, and start again from the waist.
It's quite straightforward, isn't it?
When the pattern repeats,
it tends to group together. You get the feeling?
It gets tiresome quickly and doesn't make you want to look in detail.
Let's just keep this pattern as one line....
It gets a little boring like that.
But, just by cutting one part like this,
creates a unique point in the middle.
One, two, three. See?
Just by doing this,
is enough to increase the density.
Live every Sunday at 6 PM.
This is something I mentioned before.
When arranging colors,
[Fourth Point!] If you have achromatic colors,
I mentioned that it's easier to manage.
If I'm
designing a character.
But I'm not good at arranging colors.
If you think that about yourself,
you should always include at least one achromatic color.
To be exact, achromatic refers to
black and white colors.
You need to have at least one achromatic color.
Whether it's white, black, or grey.
And if possible,
For instance, this color and
in between these colors,
[If you put white or black] as the amount of white increases,
the connection here improves.
Either white or black.
Achromatic colors have the effect of
forcibly organizing the relationship between two colors.
The less confident I am about colors,
if you use achromatic colors in the right amount,
the more successful drawing it becomes.
So, looking at this picture,
there are too many colors.
First of all, there are so many colors....
It would be better to reduce the number of colors first.
So, therefore, on this.
If you're having a hard time,
do not keep bringing out new colors.
Use the colors you already used.
It's better to reuse the colors.
For example,
if you want to keep these yellow boots,
It would be better
to change this inside yellow.
Let's get rid of some blues.
There are just too many colors....
Like this... if unsure, just go with achromatic.
Just white, black, grey.
If used,
the colors look much more organized.
So? If unsure, just go with achromatic.
Follow these four rules is enough to make your drawing half decent.
I wish you would,
when designing your Halloween character this time,
consider these factors,
and create better designs.
