Helpful Content Update ≠ Texte
Summary
Q & A
Was bedeutet der Begriff 'Tough Love' in diesem Kontext?
🛠 Anpassung an Googles 'Helpful Content Update'

Transcripts
As a forewarning.
This episode contains tons of anti-mainstream recommendations and statements that some will not
like. No E-E-A-T blah blah blah.
In this episode, you'll learn the latest findings and what measures you should try to recover from
the Helpful Content Update.
Have fun!
Transparency is extremely important to me.
Therefore: Not a single one of our websites or those of our clients that we support is even
remotely affected by the latest Core Update or the Helpful Content Update.
For all those who are not so deeply involved in the subject:
The Helpful Content System is now part of the core.
So you could say that either I have no idea how to bring about a recovery or I have a positive
interpretation:
We obviously seem to be doing something very, very right.
We are now talking about what I would do if I had been destroyed by the Helpful Content Update.
Number one: ToFu is for great authorities and generative AI.
Concentrate on MoFu and BoFu.
For all those who are now saying 'What the hell is that?
ToFu, MoFu, BoFu – Top of the Funnel, Mid of the Funnel, Bottom of the Funnel.
And MoFu and BoFu - i.e.
what is important now - MoFU would be, for example, educational content about your product
and BoFu would be, for example, a service page or a product page or a product category page.
So. We've talked about this before.
This was also a big topic in my presentation at Search Seekers.
Google can serve ToFu perfectly with the "Users also ask" box or the "Users also ask" boxes, the
Knowledge Graph and also with SGE.
Your ToFu content, which is
probably already available a million times over, is not needed unless you are a big fish.
And a post from one of my absolute favorite SEOs, Grind.
This is now at Builder Society and you have to read this post at your leisure, but
it's really, really important:
"Google doesn't need you to educate their users on topics, that's what they exist for".
This means that, logically, Google is not necessarily thrilled if you try to capture traffic
somehow. Traffic that they don't actually want to send because they serve it on their platform
anyway. I think it's very, very important to always keep that in mind.
You really have to offer real added value, as some SEOs would now say.
But that's not the right approach.
It's about offering something that Google wants and can't do itself - if you want to play the game
on the Google platform.
Examples of this are: If you really have expertise and experience on a certain topic and provide
content on it - that's something SGE can offer, the language model cannot.
That means it needs that from the outside, because it's always changing and these details etc.
If you have actually tested and used products, actually visited places, actually provided
services...
Ultimately, this also means - as another study shows - that you have photos on your website that
you have taken yourself instead of stock photos.
Because it's another one of those things: that's not added value, a language model or generative AI
can simply generate that itself.
Deliver something truly unique.
And that's the opposite of most tofu SEO content.
All that glossary bullshit.
This is the opposite of direct AI outputs.
There is an episode on this.
In fact, this is the last episode where we talk about it:
'What is that supposed to mean, something unique?
It's not as difficult as you think and you don't have to be a rocket scientist, you don't have to
be Einstein.
It is possible to make something unique that no one can replicate.
More on this in the last episode.
So.
Then number two, an essential point that is very close to my heart:
Don't be fooled, your link profile is damn important!
And point 1 is there:
Continue to maintain your link profile with the Disavow Tool.
Again a post from one of my favorite SEOs, again from Grind Stone, where he says there is one who
is negatively affected by the Core Update and yes...
Blablabla... And what the grind is actually saying is: Hey, you have all these spam links pointing to
your site, where you think - this is the myth among SEOs - 'Oh, you don't have to devalue all
these weird links that everyone has, because Google does that itself'.
The funny thing is, most of the good SEOs I know personally who are super successful and don't get
crushed by core uptates always devalue them.
So Evergreen Media also has these links and I have a quarterly timer that I clean up these links.
So.
Then, what I found very, very exciting - this is now an analysis from CCarter, also one of my
favorite SEOs, and this analysis is bigger than just this post, but this is the overview now.
The big question: What about your nofollow/ dofollow distribution?
The problem with many SEOs is that they only do SEO, they only get links via SEO, which means they
have an extremely high rate of dofollow links.
If I were Google now, I would notice this and it would certainly not be a positive factor.
So this is a great flag to crush someone in the Core Update.
The solution now is not, I'm building nofollow links now - so you can do that and it's perfectly
fine - the solution is, you think of SEO not just in this silo, but entirely as online marketing and
you get links from forums that are typically nofollow and you get...
You do some sponsored content and these links are nofollow, or you do PR and sometimes you get a
follow link, sometimes you get no link at all, sometimes you get a nofollow link.
Naturalness! Of course, you can fake naturalness, that's perfectly fine.
But think about these things and don't let Google take the piss.
'Oh no, that's no longer important.
Backlinks are no longer important'.
Take a look at who ranks.
Seriously? Links are no longer important?
Honestly? Look at what ranks and deduce what works, not what Google says.
What Google says is humbug.
You told us 'User signals?
No, we don't use it'.
We know that was a clear lie.
It's not about Google saying 'Oh, the evil conspiracy', but if I were Google and I had an
algorithm - I certainly wouldn't be telling people how SEO works, I'd be completely insane.
So. Number three: You're making yourself redundant with your AI content laziness.
And this is now at the meta level.
This is independent of the fact that Google cannot directly recognize AI content.
Anyone who has experimented with AI content knows: Google cannot recognize AI content.
KI-Content rankt.
Definitiv!
For me, it's more about that: AI doesn't take your job, it takes your laziness.
And it really is laziness. It destroys your job, annoys your target group and ruins your brand.
It's not about making AI content 'Ouh'...
So if you only think in terms of traffic and rankings, then you're a terrible SEO anyway,
because you should really only think in terms of the profitability of content investments.
And AI content is unlikely to generate particularly good user signals and has an
extremely high risk of being crushed sooner or later because it is in Google's interest to crush
it. In other words, is it a good investment?
Not!
Because why do you need your website with AI content if Google can also display this content
directly in the search results?
You are superfluous.
Why is your concept generally needed in this world if you work like this?
It is not necessary.
Understand: Generative AI is just a new interface for information.
So that's why SEOs have actually become more important, even if the perception of all the
people who are superficial about the topic is perhaps different at the moment.
But where do ChatGPT, Perplexity, SGE - where do they get the information from?
They have a language model to formulate the answer, but they pull the information from Search
Results via Retrieval Augmented Generation.
Is there a video about it?
That means, understand: content is super, super, super, super important, but you have to deliver
something unique that hasn't already been done 1000 times.
Für Churn and Burn ist KI-Content grandios.
I am fully convinced. Wenn ich Churn and Burn Affiliate-Marketing mache – mach KI-Content.
F or companies with a time horizon longer than twelve months, AI content is not an option.
Number four.
And this comes from a study by Cyrus Shephard, where he looked at the losers and winners of the
latest updates:
Rethink the amount and annoyance of your advertising and notifications.
So I think what we often forget is that the ultimate goal is to achieve our users' objectives,
that they are satisfied, that they get what they want in the end.
The more I annoy people with advertising...
That's not what they want.
I understand that advertising is needed to monetize certain business models.
But the more I bother them with them, the more I annoy them with notifications, the worse the user
signals will be and the more my rankings will tank.
Quite simply.
Then fifthly: Make your internal linking less aggressive or diverser.
And this is now something like...
It's multi-layered and now I think I need to expand a little.
In this study by Cyrus Shephard, for example, he recognized it: Okay, websites with an extremely
extensive Mega Menu tend to be sites that haven't performed particularly well in recent updates.
By the way, I'll show you the study briefly, because it's really cool.
He explains all this and what the factors are for winners and losers etc.
Mega cool, I can highly recommend it to everyone.
But there's more.
This is more from the black hat community now, but the black hat community, for example, is of the
opinion that there will be an update in 2022 where Google will now really evaluate internal
linking differently.
I'm not 100% convinced, but I've seen so many examples that I'm now having second thoughts.
And what they say: Google also looks at anchor text diversity for internal linking.
Because it simply shows whether someone is now such a hardcore aggressive SEO or whether they are
linking internally to improve the UX.
As I said, I'm not 100% convinced, but I'm pretty convinced.
And if we now take an example like this - we have our article on SEO costs, then our main keywords
are logically "SEO costs", "what does SEO cost", "SEO price" etc.
And if I now link this article internally, with this knowledge in the background, then I would now
vary between sometimes I link perfect anchor text "SEO costs", sometimes with "prices for SEO",
sometimes "budget for search engine optimization".
And I also vary more internally.
That can't hurt.
Why can't it do any harm?
What this does not mean: You are now starting to cannibalize yourself and link to anchor texts that
are actually commercial on an informational page - we don't do that.
But this also allows us to increase the keyword portfolio of this page with the keywords that this
page can cover and for which this page ranks.
This means that the page then ranks for more variations of this keyword.
Okay, okay, okay.
Then number six:
Google can't read, so it definitely can't read like you think Google can read, and just wants
happy users.
SEOs are still stuck in the days of WDF*IDF and keyword density
bullshit.
It really is now...
So it was about time eight years ago: What do users want?
How can I inspire users and achieve product-driven SEO?
It has to go in this direction and less in the direction of 'Tactical...
How can I optimize the content?' Content optimization is super easy if you produce
something cool and then follow certain SEO guidelines:
'How can I still use WDF*IDF?
No. Simply no.
For specific recommendations on how to make users happier, how to optimize for user signals: this
episode. So.
Now consider all these points:
A single point that you implement here won't help at all, because - there's an episode on this - a
bit of SEO cosmetics won't save you.
So that you are affected by an update like the Helpful Content Update.
You can imagine it like this: there are red flags and if you have enough red flags, you get crushed.
And you have probably reached an unimaginable number of these red flags.
And now it's not a case of removing a red flag and then everything will be fine, but you will have to
change your digital brand significantly if you want to...
If these things we've discussed now, if this is new territory for you, you're going to need, I'm
just saying, transformation to get you out of here.
So. How long does it take to recover from Google's Helpful Content Update?
According to Google: They say yes, it takes several weeks and months, etc.
That is basically what we know.
From the cases I've seen now: I find it incredibly difficult to understand 'Hey, I made this change
and then it happened because the time frame in between is too long and we always have
fluctuations in the rankings.
But on the subject, I believe that Google is actually giving honest feedback because people are
angry. In other words, it ultimately depends on how quickly you implement changes.
Of course, if you quickly clean up all the red flags...
The funny thing is always with these cases and when you read these Reddit things and so on:
The website is garbage and then they change 'Yes, I've reduced the keyword density.
Why hasn't my side recovered?'
Because your content is totally worthless and you should redo all your content.
And then you can say 'Okay, I redid everything and nothing happened'.
Then you can definitely get upset.
But yes.
Then perhaps only to this question: Are there recoveries?
Ja. I have seen recoveries myself.
What I think a little bit is that many who have recovered from this update are just quiet.
So.
A little Tough Love at the end.
If you are affected, I dare say at this point that you have few other traffic sources besides Google.
Because what I generally always see with such updates is: It goes hand in hand.
The people who only optimize for Google, so you're just manipulating Google, you're breaking Google's
rules and you're 100% dependent on Google - I don't think you can cry about it.
The funny thing is those who also think bigger, do different things, i.e.
who build a content marketing ecosystem, really build a digital brand, who see the whole thing
that way: There is SEO and there is SEO content, but they also make other valuable content and they
do digital PR and are simply strong on the platforms that are important in their industry -
so I'll call them user-centric companies - they are not affected by such core updates.
And that's something I think SEOs need to think about.
This fixation on something is perhaps not good.
That doesn't mean - is SEO less important now?
No, organic search remains the biggest, most important traffic channel.
But just how we see link building, we don't see it now as 'Okay, with link building....
I pick up articles in cool media that are also read and have added value.
No, we SEOs are like, 'I do backlinks to increase my authority and I don't care if the website gets
traffic'. That is simply not very sensible.
So this mindset has been dead for plus ten years and yet there are still the new people coming into
SEO - they still seem to think this way.
That's not how SEO works.
SEO is simply marketing.
So. And now it's your turn.
Are you affected by the Helpful Content Update?
What measures have you taken?
Did they help? Have you recovered?
I am incredibly happy to receive comments on this topic.
I know this was a Tough Love episode, which not everyone will like, but I think it was important
to get my opinion out on the subject.
Many, many thanks for watching and see you next time.
Bye!
