Transcripts
tyler said that if we ever won another
award that i would have to speak more on
stage
i chose the drums that i would never
have to speak in a microphone in front
of people
but here we are now and i'm so nervous i
think i might throw up it's okay josh um
good job when i was younger i was i was
terrified of talking in front of
people whether it was a crowd of people
or
um even a small group of people it was
uh
it was terrifying and i felt like this
is a place where i can i can sort of
hide behind and
and do my thing but also feel like i'm
i'm not necessarily
presenting myself in in a in a very
vulnerable way and it's something that
uh
if i get nervous all i
naturally do is hit harder and i don't
think that's
typically a bad thing so it became
something that i needed to do
um and i i i couldn't
i couldn't think about doing anything
else
my biggest fear is talking in front of
people
for real uh
it's weird
i don't like it at all but you know
what's weird about it we've talked about
it though like if you were to just start
removing
one person at a time at some point you'd
be like this is fine
it's like a conversation
at that point rather than like a
presentation and maybe the microphone's
not helping it doesn't help
i think i've gotten used to it um but
i've never ever liked it in high school
i
had to
figure out like how to
you know like write a paper or something
instead of give a speech because i was
crippling i've kind of grown up and been
in and out of anxiety and had like you
know
uh just this
trouble
i don't like being the center of
attention which makes it
sometimes hard to be in a two-person
band and kind of like
when i was younger
what got me into the drums is i was like
dude i can just hide behind this and i
don't have to say anything i don't have
to sing or be in the front of the stage
and then that kind of shifted when
i started listening it's crazy some of
my some of my darkest like moments in my
mind of my whole life i've been on stage
and some of my happiest moments in life
have been on stage too so it's like
every night is really different
um
but it's but it's just like
i get so excited for it every day
[Applause]
[Applause]
[Music]
oh
josh wants to know wants you guys to
know that he messed up uh your language
a little bit tonight he's very very
sorry he's like my best friend so i know
he
that took a lot for him to try to do
that he learns a different language
every single night that's pretty amazing
so
you know it's a lot of fun for me and i
i
constantly try to push through whatever
struggle
there is that i'm having so if that is
like i don't love sitting and having a
camera on me or a microphone in front of
my face it's
those type of things that i'm like okay
well because i don't like that
why don't i like it and how can i
figure out how to get better at it and
make it feel more comfortable to me so
it it it literally is nothing it's not
like oh i just don't feel like doing
this it's sometimes it's just like
wow i don't know if i can do this um and
uh but there is like there's there's
kind of a rush sometimes with facing
your fears and and
diving headfirst into something that's
really uncomfortable i think i've i've
grown a lot um
and i think it's it feels fulfilling and
after it's done even i'm just like oh my
gosh i just
spoke with a microphone
and i think that uh i like the challenge
of trying to convey emotion
within something that
that i i couldn't use my voice
um and that's always been kind of a
fear and anxiety of mine anyway is kind
of like speaking
um so i felt like it was kind of perfect
anyway it was kind of like how can i
figure out how to
how to express something without
actually saying something and do it in
in the context of
music
when i first kind of got into fitness it
was running and i was kind of it was
kind of due to um
anxiety and i was i was just feeling
like i was about to die
so i literally just got up and ran out
the door and started running and
it changed my life yeah beginning of my
uh running sort of just stemmed from
just
you know having an overwhelming amount
of anxiety and there was just a time
where i was just like oh man i'm just i
just got up and ran out the door uh
because i was just feeling awful and um
and i think there's something about it
that uh i really felt like i was just i
i was in control of sort of um how my
body felt and uh if i if i felt tired or
or
um you know my lungs are are tighter or
tired or my heartbeat's
speeding up then it's because i'm
running and it's okay
and yeah and there was and it was it was
extremely healing uh and and i and that
was you know another thing that i sort
of just got obsessed with and so when i
started playing drums
obviously i didn't know what i was doing
at all i think there was like a moment
where like i got all of my like limbs to
do something different
and i thought that was such a cool
feeling and something that i also
i guess the word that he uses
was addicted and i felt addicted to that
too
uh on a serious
note i think
my whole life since since i was a kid
music actually has uh been been a huge
thing that helps helps me when i feel
anxious like you know putting on
putting on something to uh really kind
of get you know i i like to think about
music um
to tyler's point there's you know
there's chords uh there's different
beats and melodies and
you know it's you can you can let it fit
in the background or you can let it sit
in the foreground and really enjoy it
um
and comedy i like to laugh so i think
music and comedy are two things that are
very helpful with
feeling anxious and more most
importantly
tyler playing um the youth for me
usually before i realize the way that
like
each sort of genre
but also band but even within a band
like the different song could make me
feel a different way
and
i thought that was really powerful
[Applause]
i don't know how to do this like he does
i don't know how he does that but
hey i don't say this very often but
let's give it up for tyler
i think uh
what i will say is i think that if if
there ever came a point where we both
completely overcame our insecurities
i don't think this would be fun anymore
i think every night going on stage
knowing that there's something to battle
and overcome and conquer
um
that's what that's what makes it fun i
do think that we both also possess
confidence in what we do so i don't
think
insecurity should necessarily be
a code name for not confident or
whatever but there's a balance and i
think that
going out there
for me
sitting behind my drums and knowing that
my my dude tyler's over here
makes me feel very confident in our show
and
um i fee i think that we both feel that
way
but that doesn't mean that there's not
internal
battles going on constantly within both
of us
so it's kind of just you know it's a
it's a balance of
conquering those while holding on to our
our confidence and
what we've created and what we've done
i think the the highest point for me
um in this sort of journey of music or
or drums
was a
college show
at ohio university it was actually in
somebody's backyard
this show in particular was the the
first show that
that uh
tyler and i ever played together which
is which is uh the other guy in this
band it was a it was a kind of that the
moment that was uh during that that one
song that we were able to play
um
that i was kind of like i'm playing
music with with my best friend and and
i'll never forget that
it's crazy that
i'm here now getting to play music in
front of people and and share it and be
creative and
and travel around with my best friends
to
hit drums
