Macintosh Color Classic
Launched in 1993 First integrated Macintosh with built-in color monitor
Yes! I'm Macaron, an elite Mac junker.
This time it's a vintage Mac with box!
Now let's go with me to the world of 30 years ago.
Chapter 1: Excavating the Shed... and Opening the Box
This time it was provided by viewer "madtakotaro
Thank you very much!
They excavated it from the shed, but it didn't turn on.
And we're told that all the accessories are there.
That's a genuine keyboard.
Good condition, not like 30 years old
Old logo is so cute.
Keyboard angle adjustment latch
Connection to ADB (Apple Desktop Bus)
World's first general-purpose serial bus connection system developed by Steve Wozniak
Box labeled Macintosh Essentials, quite heavy
Translation: "Macintosh Essentials
Mouse! It's a necessity.
Traditional one-button mouse
At any rate, you're going to want to remove the ball. w
That's for a bulky curled-cord keyboard.
This is a power cable.
What is it? Two mysterious screws
I found out they are fixing screws for the back cover.
It is heavy...
It was an assortment of floppies.
That's a lot, by the way.
12 system-related
There were 16 floppies for fonts
And... something about Apple's announcement
It seems to be an announcement of an update to fix a bug.
So the fix disc was mailed out.
And more
Apple Care2! (I didn't know it existed before this)
Manual... it's thick!
Pop illustration
Starting with how to turn on the power
Friendly specifications with many illustrations
Lecture on how to hold the mouse
Oh, I need to install QuickTime KanjiTalk7
Finally, the main unit.
Before that, there was an extra book, ResEdit Complete Edition? I'll check it out...
It's a software to change program resources, OS icons, mouse cursor...
That's too thick.
And I think it's game software.
Wolfenstein 3DFPS game known as the original
Unopened, shrink-wrapped.
It's very rare.
I'd love to play it when I can start it!
I was also sent a set of free software CD-ROMs that I didn't ask for.
Heavy
Macintosh Color Classic
Chapter 2...Does it work?
Let's turn it on
I heard it can't boot up, but I'd like to check it just in case.
Connecting keyboard to ADB terminal
Mouse is connected to keyboard because it supports daisy chaining
Now turn on the main switch on the back
Then turn on the power with the keyboard
No response
MADTAKOTARO was right.
I'm not sure what I should do...
I'm going to take it off carefully because it looks like it's going to break.
Logic board is just pulled out lol
I wish I could teach someone 30 years ago how to remove the logic board from an iMac today.
I've heard that backup batteries often burst.
And if that happens, it's going to be very difficult to recover.
CPU is Motorola 68030 with 16MHz clock frequency
Replace backup battery for now
It's empty (of course)
Purchased from Amazon, 3.6V lithium battery
Not sold in 100s lol
Put it back in and check it works.
Lamp lights up!
Weak startup sound... cute!
But... the screen doesn't show up.
No, it's not! Here it comes. Suddenly...
(It is a cathode-ray tube, so the display looks like a wave, but you can't actually see it.
The folder icon now seems to be missing from the startup device
I'm going to put in the system installation disk.
Looks like it's loading.
Welcome, welcome!
I thought I could install it and it would be OK...
It seems that the HDD is not recognized
Anyway, when I tried to reboot
I hope you get the picture.
REPLAY
So this is Sad Mac.
Icon displayed in case of hardware malfunction
I still need to repair it.
Case has only 4 T15 screws
I could remove them with a T10 Torx screwdriver (wicked)
Mecha-mecha-ish
Fan was attached to the case
Cathode ray tubes are high voltage and can be life-threatening, so please be sure to discharge them.
This channel cannot be held responsible for any damage to your cathode-ray tube.
Sony Trinitron Monitor 10inch
Cool, looks like a railgun (don't know the real one)
I thought maybe there wasn't a hard drive in there... but... there is.
We will now proceed with the repair as basic.
Deterioration of capacitors on the logic board as a cause of HDD not being recognized
Capacitors have a life span and will be replaced!
Chapter 3: First Things First... Logic Board Repair
Surface mount type, the kind where the legs don't penetrate the board.
Flux to improve solder flow.
Placed solder
And then we're going to take it off with a solder sucker...
I don't feel it will come off at all!
Plan B heaping up low melting point solder
As the name suggests, it has a low melting point and hardens slowly
It means we should remove the solder before it hardens completely.
OK, let's go with that.
I think that's the last one.
We'll clean up the rand from here.
Once we heap the solder and suck it out
And then clean it up with anhydrous ethanol and cotton swab
Good job
All the cleaning is done like this
Electrolytic capacitors removed
Change to tantalum capacitor
Tantalum capacitors have the advantage of long life
Chosen for future use
Installation is done with spare solder on one side.
Slip the capacitor in during heating
Then solder the other side
Finally, add solder on both sides
I'll explain it again.
Spare solder on one side
Slip it in while heating
Tantalum capacitors are more positive with the line in
Solder on the other side of the capacitor
Fixing at the end
Flux cleaned with anhydrous ethanol
All the rest of the installation is complete.
Check from the side...OK!
I managed to do it without damaging the logic board.
Startup confirmed
It was no good... although I heard the HDD spin up.
HDD stopped in the middle and not recognized
Chapter 4 This Time! Analog board repair
Discharging the cathode-ray tube will be essential to remove the analog board
The cathode-ray tube is not touched until the discharging process is complete
Connect alligator clips to screwdriver
Connect the other side to the ground wire
Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the anode cap
Touch the hook inside and remove it (this is the discharge operation)
This is very dangerous and should be done only after careful investigation.
Disconnect the ground wire
Video board
It is hardened with silicone, so it is removed with a knife
Now all we have to do is pull it out...
I've pulled it out!
Disconnect the connector leading to the analog board
Slide and pull upward to remove
Speaker...mounting is Velcro or w
FDD.
Lots of dust from age
SCSI HDD
Made by Quantum, which at that time had the second largest market share in the world after Seagate.
Of course, it's hard to get now, so we don't want to have HDD failure as a result.
We will replace the capacitor here as well.
According to the information published by an overseas YouTuber "Branchus Creations".
They don't need to replace all of them.
We will replace the recommended 13 capacitors
To remove the capacitors, we have to take the glue...
Now let's apply flux and remove it...
13 pieces removed
New capacitors are installed
I made a mistake here... oh no!
Now, let's install it.
Installation complete
Cleaned up while disassembling
FDD is especially bad
The mainframe is great, too.
We're going to install it.
Will the HDD be recognized?
No recognition...
I was able to boot successfully, but the HDD is still not recognized...
After that, I checked the results.
I found information that HDD cannot operate stably when 5V output is low.
5V can be measured from ADB terminal, so I measured it and found 4.969V...
The ideal is 5.25V, so it's a little low.
And the 5V output is adjustable.
There is a tirele for adjustment on the back of the cathode-ray tube
The work is dangerous because it is done while the power is on.
I managed to adjust it to around 5.25V
What is the result of the adjustment?
Not recognized...
Final Chapter: Never give up! First HDD Repair
The remaining cause is the failure of this thing...
Normally, the entire HDD would be replaced... but it's hard to find.
First, visually inspect the board
Only this area is in powdery condition
Is it a capacitor leak? I doubt it.
Let's replace it.
Exchange complete.
After this, I try to start it up, but
HDD is still not recognized
I've been doing a lot of research and it seems that there is a phenomenon of HDD head sticking.
So I decided to open it...
Wow, it's beautiful!
This is not the time to say
I'm afraid to touch it
Is this sticking?
I pushed a little harder and it moved!
Looks like it's definitely sticking.
The cause seems to be the rubber stopper here.
The rubber seems to be sticky due to deterioration over time
That rubber is also under the platters.
If you take the platters apart, it's hard to recover them, so you have to think of another way.
Let's start from here that can be replaced.
The problem of too much magnetism
They don't come off easily...
So this is the rubber in question.
Looks like melted caramel
Okay, that's good! That's good.
I just didn't find a good replacement rubber.
I bought it at a home improvement store.
Silicon tube for medical use with heat resistance 150°C
It was about 1200 yen for 1 meter
The outer shape is 8mm but the inner diameter doesn't fit
Insert a tube with 4mm outer diameter as a spacer
This should get you there.
Perfect fit!
The rubber in the platters is inaccessible, so...
I'm going to reverse the idea and put a stopper behind the head.
Spongy tape on the back of the head to make a stopper
And then...
I did it! I was able to boot from HDD...
About this Macintosh
Standard apps? Slide Puzzle
I tried for 15 minutes but couldn't complete it.
Let's take a look at the control panel
A map of the world that I don't know how to use
I wanted to try something, set the date to January 1 and restart
Oooh! I'm a little bit impressed.
Finally, the game is opened!
And the floppy was still there.
It's like a letter or something.
Explanatory note
Catalog of games
There are viewers who miss it, right?
Let's do it!
Mode selection? I don't know, so let's just go with it...
Difficulty is on the top left of the pacifier.
The screen is small w
It may be that the specs are too tight, but it lags a little bit.
Arrow keys are also hard to use.
Finally...
Here are my impressions of this time
I thought the HDD not being recognized was due to a bad capacitor in the unit...
I didn't think it was a HDD failure, nor did I think it could be fixed...
Well, I want to keep this machine, so I feel I could prolong its life by replacing the capacitor.
If you have any memories about old Macs, please comment!
See you soon!
