The Orchid room at the Biltmore Estate is given a special episode dedicated to its unique collection.
Mark Basset, a horticulturalist and orchid specialist, shares his expertise on orchid care and design.
The orchid collection at Biltmore has grown from 300 to about a thousand plants under Mark's care.
Orchids are a diverse family with around 30,000 species and 150,000 hybrids, allowing for year-round blooming.
Fus Dan Rosenberg, a primary hybrid between Fus tank ofilia and gastrochilus tuberculosa, is highlighted for its unique colors and growth habits.
Terrestrial orchids like Fus Dan Rosenberg can be grown easily in pots, even indoors.
Epiphytic orchids are more challenging for home growers due to their need for high humidity and air movement.
The importance of growing orchids that are suitable for one's local climate is emphasized.
Dendrobium hybrids, such as 'Nester,' are showcased for their fragrance and growth patterns.
Catasetum, a Florida native orchid, has a unique growth cycle that mimics the state's wet and dry seasons.
Paphiopedilum, or slipper orchids, are noted for their ease of growth and attractiveness even when not in bloom.
The process of naming and registering new orchid clones is discussed, with an example of 'Biltmore Zaroni'.
Cattleya orchids and their hybrids are shown, with a focus on their varying flower sizes and fragrances.
The Orchid rematriation program at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is praised for its efforts to reintroduce native species.
Orchid care tips are provided, including the importance of proper watering, fertilization, and temperature control.
Bubble palm, a plant with unusual flowers that mimic dead meat, is featured as an example of the diversity within the orchid family.
The need for a large collection to ensure continuous blooming in a public garden is explained, with the suggestion of around 300 plants.
The video concludes with a reminder of the importance of proper greenhouse siting and the joy of continuous learning in orchid cultivation.
Transcripts
on our sister Channel flock we toured
the historic grounds of the builtmore
estate and in a previous episode here
walked through belmore's Lush
conservatories but purposely left out
the Orchid room so that we could give it
its own special episode here on plant
one on
[Music]
me my name is Mark bersett I am uh
listed as a Horticultural and have you
always done the Orchid House here or
okay yes I'm I was hired to do orchids
great okay cuz you are an orchid
specialist then right orchids is not my
forte but there's a lot of people on the
channel who absolutely adore them so I'm
grateful that you are an expert here and
you could actually take us through
you're changing the orchids constantly
correct tell me a little bit about your
philosophy of Designing the space
showcasing them when I came to work here
there were about 300 plants so and that
was due to attrition so they kept
whatever grew they didn't have an orchid
specialist so I started bring in plants
I have friends who gave me Plants I know
people in the industry so our collection
has grown to about a th plants wow and
being a public garden you need to have
something in bloom all year round so you
can do that with orchids because they're
a very large family of plants there's
about um 30,000 species so you can do
that about 150,000 hybrids so there's
pretty much anything that that you want
and orchids is available yeah so why
don't you take us through I don't and I
don't know if you specialize in certain
orchids but why don't you take us
through some of the ones that are
actually In Bloom now so this plant here
I love plants with stories this this
came from the Atlanta botanic garden I
went down there and did a Walkin tour of
their collection which is about 10,000
plants and the lady gave me this this is
called uh Fus Dan
Rosenberg and this great color caramels
yeah this is a c primary hybrid between
Fus tank ofilia and
gastrochilus
tuberculosa and the yellow and the and
the orangey comes from one p and then
the other color comes from the other and
this a terrestrial so this actually you
grow in potting soil yeah and uh it
grows all year round but the spring is
when it really starts to grow and look
at the leaf like if this wasn't In Bloom
I don't know if you would know that this
was an orchid it could look like a a
young palm tree yeah but it's something
you could grow relatively easy in a pot
even in a house yeah that's interesting
house plant for orchids you know because
a lot of the terrestrial orchids I grow
and I have like a couple catayas and
everything like that as well but like
I'm kind of more in the ludisia
discolor you know range of orchids Jewel
orchids yeah so you know most orchids
are epiphytes right meaning they grow on
other plants so this is one of the
things that makes them difficult to to
grow in your house right um because they
don't really want to be in pots and then
your house is dry and these are plants
that like high humidity air movement
water dry out quickly so it's not always
something you can do in your house but
this is very much a
terrestrial how did you like the Alpine
Orchid collection at Atlanta Botanical
Garden I didn't see that you see I would
like to see that good so you're talking
about terrestrials yeah well no some of
them are epiphytic but they're more
Alpine part oh so you're talking cool
growing or as Dev vales Draculas and all
that yeah I I try to stay with stuff
that I know I can grow in my space cuz
it wouldn't wouldn't work here but you
know their collection was pretty so in
in the tropics you have valleys that are
really warm and as that air heats up it
flows up and it cools off and as it
cools off it rains or turns into fog but
you have a lot cooler temperatures and
so that's I grow more intermediate which
is 60 to 80 degrees and you know and
then different light levels within that
uh temperature range so you got to know
what like when I lived in Florida people
wanted to grow stuff that was cool grown
because they grow hot grown stuff right
is it grow it grows in your area so you
can grow it well yeah and I think that's
the same for both like well in Florida
like they're a lot of times they're
growing their orchids outside but um but
yeah it's the same thing for house plant
enthusiasts like you know what I mean
you want the things that you usually
can't grow you know that that are unique
to to your place right let's continue on
so this is a dendrobium hybrid called
Nester um dendrobium comprise about 1200
species in mostly in the tropics uh from
very tiny plants to very large plants um
this is a monsoonal grower so you see
the greens it's starting to grow again
uh and then it'll grow all summer and
then it'll start dropping leaves and you
dry it out in the fall and winter and
then the these are all last year's
growth ones in flour uh and then these
new growths will flour but you have to
dry it out and keep it on the cool side
that's a really good tip it's and it's
uh fairly fragrant uh it's not cool warm
enough in here for it to be fragrant
Frant um I do smell a little bit of a
hint of a very sweet almost a candy I
think it smells like grape juice when
it's nice and warm and that's a really
good point these are you know these are
a little bit L lanky plants but they
make a nice show when you get them
growing right so um so this is another
uh f what's over here oh I like to tell
plant a story so this plant here also
acts like the dendrobium this is a
codium punctum this is actually a
Florida native it almost looks like a
dancing lady kind of it's sort of
related to
idium but again that you know Florida
has a wet and dry season and this acts
the same way so the new growth that is
coming and the FL it comes when it
flowers when the new growth comes but
also in Florida uh they were poached out
of the wild and
Fairchild decided to do a repopulating
so they got some seeds and grew about a
million seeds and and into plants and
they're trying to reintroduce them yeah
Fairchild has an excellent Orchid
rematriation repatriation program and
actually we've highlighted it here on
plant one on me so I'll link to that as
well because they're doing an excellent
job with that even with the schools as
well inv to do and like I said this is a
a Florida native so it's interesting so
this is a
pepia pedum a slipper orchid this one's
called delady ey and I personally like
slippers I think they're easy to grow
and they also is one that you could
probably grow in your house without much
trouble yeah and and as I always share
with folks these are the ones that have
really excellent leaves so even when
they're not in flower it's a very pretty
plant there about 60 species in this
family and there's a bunch of bunch of
hybrids they've been made for years this
is interesting this was discovered in
the late 1800s and a bunch of them were
introduced to Europe and North America
America and then because they didn't
tell where they came from that
information got lost and for 80 years
nobody ever rediscovered them and then
80 years later they rediscovered them
but this a really easy species to grow
some of the paths are not that easy if
they're species but this one is
sometimes it's hard to find the species
there's so many
cultivars many crosses what you need to
find is a path specialist and they're
going to always have some species um
this one I'll bring this one out cuz
it's a little bit so this one came from
a grower in bravard as we bought a bunch
about 10 years ago um this is called
pelum pisar raisin and uh the the guy is
in Bard at Looking Glass orchids but
anyway I think this is a really quality
plant so I took it to the American
orchan society judging Center had it
judged and it was awarded yes so I could
name the Clon so you know when you have
seedlings each one of those has a name
you can name each one of those clones oh
f so this got named builtmore zaroni
because raisin is on either side uh and
there's a wine made from grapes that are
almost raisins and that's called amaroni
so it's builtmore amaron oh what a
excellent Name yeah so I didn't realize
that you could name the Clones with a
like Prim Primo species like or primo uh
you know plant yeah you can you don't it
don't have to be that great you can put
a name on them but to really put them in
the history books you need to get them
awarded and then they're kept on a
database um forever oh God basically
yeah but that's a really nice uh slipper
it grows really well I've actually
divided it and so forth this one's a
cute one so this related to catas this
is an
enyia uh
cordigera um comes from the South
America it uh really high light you want
me to pull it down mhm sure so it comes
from a really it grows really high light
like high in the trees um so it's
important that it gets light to flower
when I was taking a look at some of the
kattia species some of them had like a
much smaller flower like this but then
when you see some of those catti a
hybrids they're like corsages now well
they're multiple generations of
hybridizing so this has a little bit of
a fragrance so um you want yeah I
try I can't really pick it up with my
nose but this is you know you can take a
standard catly and cross that with that
they're within that same family so um
let's see what else we got here so lot
of these These are fragum MH so they
look very similar to pphop pedms or
slipper orchids these are South American
Natives and most of these were gifts
from friends are they very close on the
philogenetic tree of so if you look at
slipper orchids they sort of occur in
this belt around the globe um southeast
Asia North America Europe uh and South
America they um all have the same FL
it's called floral morphology so the lip
that's a modified petal shaped like a
that's called the labellum it's a trap
so the whatever pollinates this will
come and walk around then fall inside it
and there's a certain exit it has to go
out right in order does it get hit with
the penia on the so what happens is um I
mean this is not going to be so on the
backside here there's a little window
right and there's a little warty looking
thing and it sticks next to that window
and when the insect comes out that
pollen is sticky it goes onto the insect
um but like I said these are all gifts
from people that uh I don't have the
room in my own Greenhouse so they came
here hey that's great you just like you
have the Overflow Greenhouse right and
this is a nice now that one's going over
so but it's another um it's funky it
looks like Dracula or something yeah so
this is a catasetum this is a plant that
comes from South America the whole
family is interesting in that they grow
all summer grow leaves and then they
drop their leaves in the fall and then
they'll FL flower from fall through
early spring right this is a hybrid from
a grower in Florida it's called Crown um
Crown Fox voodoo magic you highlight
these as well so on cidi onium this is
kind of what I was mentioning that that
flower looks very similar so this
labellum is very large on most on cium
and you can craw uh I think they're not
hard to grow but they're not really an
indoor plant they have fine Roots so
overwatering is an issue they also uh
like a decent amount of light so if you
cannot give that to them they're gonna
not they may grow but they're not going
to flower for right that those are all
like really wonderful tips because
people who get into orchids a lot of
times they're trying to modify their
house and their lighting situation in
order to be able to grow them because
once you become an orchid lover it's a
deep deep hole it's a it's a life of
hoarding um but you could grow these
under lights relatively easy you know um
and they cross with BR brassas and uh
melon opsis so there's a lot of
variation in what they look like but
generally they'll have a big labellum
these colors are just like phenomenal
kind of like that brick yeah the brick
color yeah this is called uh
katante um oidium
katante yeah this is a really good
grower this came out of Hawaii years ago
I've had about 10 years um so what else
we have here so you got a lot of these
like terrestrial esque like orchids you
know so this is one of the parents of
that over there it looks really rough
but it's going over it'll come out today
but uh it has brown SE these uh Brown
and that's purple when it's fresh but
they're not they're fun to grow and they
don't you don't really see them for sale
I don't understand why I have not seen
them and I think it's like a really
interesting one for people who are like
venturing into like that Orchid and they
don't want to quite do an epey yet this
is kind of a unque easy you just
fertilize them really well and water
them during the summer really well and
in the winter you want to cut back on
the watering right um but you can have
200 flowers on that without any problem
that was divided last spring so that's
still recovering so um this is not an
orchid but this is I like weird stuff
this was one of the ones I saw 10 years
ago here and I was like what is that
it's so funky it looks like some kind of
like rattlesnake you know end so this is
a uh bubble philm there are about 12400
species in that family and they are have
really weird flowers this is a perple
racus um so the attractant is actually
this r
dark red color and the flower is
actually that yeah a lot of the bulm
have that kind of meaty like dead meat
raw meat kind of look so instead of
being pretty and right instead of being
pretty and smelling nice they decided to
go the other route we'll go to the dark
side and be stinky exactly but it works
for them because they're a big family
and they you know I've never seen this
pollinated so we must not have the
pollinator here a could be a tiny little
fungus fly could be anything yeah I was
thinking like fly or like you know one
of those like beetles that eats like you
know domestic kind of stuff you know but
it's interesting I have there's another
one called Bubba FM um phenopsis that
has big phenopsis like leaves but four
or 5T long and it will smell like a dead
cat in your Greenhouse wi it's in flower
but it's I think it's really interesting
yeah they and we've seen those leaves
they almost like like look like long
time oh you have seen themely absolutely
but I saw this 20 years ago in England
and I tried to grow it several times as
little seedlings I couldn't and I find a
decent Clump here about 10 years ago
well and it's nice that you mentioned
that one because you have a lot of
phenopsis here and you can actually see
what some of the phenopsis leaves look
like because those are the the leaves
that he had mentioned with the bulum
phenopsis I actually like them I have a
decent collection at home of different
ones so melonia is actually related to
idium yes and you could do a you could
make a hybrid with that Melton and an
idium over there so but melon is are a
little cooler growers in Florida people
actually grow this inside their house
cuz it's cooler um and this is a small
flower Sor this a small flower they they
range in color from Peaks to purples to
to yellows to White solid white I got to
I just got to like you know that's okay
nobody else pays attention to it
either it's right in front of my face
you walk in here people are doing this
right next to there's another pisga
raisin so it's related to the one I just
showed you there so you see the
difference of it mhm so and then what
about this one right here so this is uh
called
Memorial off the top of my head I can't
remember Bren Nicholson Memorial Brien
Nicholson okay uh this came from the
same grower he actually did the cross um
so this is what would be called a m ey
type um so paths also come in multi
florals long stems with six seven
flowers that all open at once right I
was going to say some that are
synchronous and some that are like
sequential like frags right they bloom
one bloom at a time for a couple weeks
and then so you can get six eight weeks
of flowers out of yeah now you have to
also you know kind of fill in with other
plants here to kind of give this a nice
display what are some of those like nice
co plants that work well I think ferns
look work really well with orchids cuz a
lot of orchids have coarse textured
leaves and stuff um and I like bads cuz
they actually grow alongside orchids in
make nature they're
epes right but anything that sort of
like I like soft textured plants do you
have any kind of like no display
preferences so Todd does all this in cuz
I I'm I like the grow plants I'm not
really into the display part of it yeah
in my house they go in my kitchen window
sill so I get to look at them a lot I
don't try to but he comes in here and
moves stuff around Hees them yeah Hees
them up I'm okay with that yeah that's
great so you could just swap them out
you could say this is what's bloom today
so I could put you in here right or I
come in here and okay several I've seen
I've been going a week I'll pull them
and if we have anything back there come
up here we redo the because the whole
point of a public garden is a display
365 right yeah and so you have to have
your collection big enough to have one
Orchid and flower every day of the year
takes about 300 plants I learned that
years ago well that's really interesting
to know yeah for so if you want one
plant in flower you're going to have to
have like 300 behind it yeah which is
why now you have like a thousand
different plants now are you you you had
some species here but are are the
majority of them cultivars or crosses uh
we're probably 80 20 hybrids hybrids
with species you know as someone has a
historical Garden it would have been
100% species but that's not going to
give you the display you need year round
right cuz they flower a certain time of
year and they don't do anything else
some of the paths and some of the of
course fails you I get multiple
flowering in the year cuz if you do a
cross and you got a parent who flowers
in May one who flowers in say September
you may get two those two flowering
periods out of your plant so so knowing
what you've got will let you know when
they're going to bloom yeah and then you
have a then a greenhouse that's not
attached to this where you're like
constantly having and and that's like
also with an intermediate kind of
temperature that you're keeping so we
have two green houses out back I got
half of one uh and then the tropical
plant people or Conservatory people have
the other okay and it I run it between
60 and 80 in the summer I have a big
cooling pad you know what a cooling pad
so I have a big cooling pad keeps it
about 82 84° and then we have 50% shade
on half of it and about 60% on the other
half during the summer months it get
pretty well even during the winter
because I have a great Greenhouse that's
got great exposure to sunlight so this
is the thing if you have a greenhouse
you can always make more shade but you
can't make more light that's true right
so it's important if you're going to get
a greenhouse to site it correctly that's
a really good tip there's a couple other
here that that we hadn't seen so I want
to make sure that we give them their
time before we okay before we end wow
this is kind of cool it's almost like a
window well this one's going over it's
going over but like still it kind of
looks really neat so this was a path
that they had here when I went to work
here 11 years ago and they didn't have a
tag on it but it's Rosy Dawn so it's a
old HD made in the 80s yeah and I love
the it's a really good grower it flowers
multiple this is it had five on it now
we're down to these last so beautiful
how do you I mean you must take it to
all your orchid friends and be like hey
which one is this because some of the I
some of the bars are so challenging to
key out how do you do it so I've been
getting magazines for about 30 years and
so you run across stuff right you
remember it and go back and find it and
do research on it yeah but yeah no I uh
I've been orchids is a learning curve
it's really steep initially and then
it's something if you're really into
them you have to keep up right there's
always information on it so this is
actually a melonia hybrid as well um I'm
not sure what one of the parents is but
you can see the similarity in that
melonis yeah and then how about this one
over here I feel like I just saw this
one so this is another dendrobium it's
going out of flower it's going to flower
again for me y so it's a noil dendrobium
this is a hybrid called Red Emperor this
is another plant you want to get sort of
on the dry cool side in the winter you
can if you do a really good job you can
have solid uh PAB Boba flowers and I
think it's a really easy plant to grow
it Kikis you know what Kikis are see
there were some on here where you get a
new growth off oh here it is off to the
side so yeah here's one so these you can
take off and it's veget propagation and
put them I grow in Moss and you just put
a water of moss around them and put them
in a pot and grow them for several years
right um a lot of orchids will do this
but then there's a lot that don't so you
have to know your plan and here is like
these are vandas right right so you have
this one growing completely epithetic
right here right so this plant does for
me they don't you can grow them in pots
but it doesn't work for me I tend to
overwater them so this way they actually
like it they get watered every day
fertilized once a week throughout the
year and they they'll file for me three
times a year so that's great yeah and we
missed you you were watering them but
you are hand watering yes these and
seeing which ones need it yeah well
today's fertilizing day so everybody
gets um so I start fertilizing about
late February and I'll fertilize through
November once a week um because that's
your growing season I already had stuff
growing in February so it was early
season this year yeah it's about a month
early for plants for yeah and and like
some people think like oh it's probably
only outdoor plants but it's also the
ones that you're growing I'm not sure
what it was I cuz I take pictures every
year and I can go back and I can see
that flowered in a month later than it
did this year what a great log you know
keeping that on file well thank you so
much this is just really lovely I think
you do such a great job like you said
you have to get some more in in order to
have all these booms so thank you so
