play00:04

treat today we're talking about

play00:06

something that is very very close to my

play00:26

helps us reach more people who would

play00:28

love to hear conversations like the one

play00:30

we're going to have today and it means

play00:33

the absolute world to me you know what I

play00:35

just realized and something I'm getting

play00:37

so excited for I'm getting married soon

play00:39

so I'm getting married in June in barley

play00:42

I'm so excited um I realized I haven't

play00:45

spoken much about it on the show at all

play00:47

but I have not been stressed out at all

play00:50

I'm kind of like waiting for you know

play00:52

when's that going to kick in not that

play00:54

I'm expecting it but I feel like bride's

play00:55

always so stressed out but I'm just like

play00:58

very chill very go with the flow

play01:00

um so I've really been enjoying the

play01:01

experience of like planning stuff

play01:03

choosing things I am using a planner

play01:05

maybe that's why I'm not as stressed out

play01:07

um but really excited for that and yeah

play01:11

if you follow me on my personal uh I

play01:12

guess you'll see all the fun photos on

play01:14

the day I'll try to post some stuff on

play01:16

the podcast page as well but that is

play01:18

coming up which is super exciting

play01:20

thought I'd just share that I always

play01:21

forget to like share a bit of my

play01:23

personal life on here I just get

play01:24

straight into the content because I'm so

play01:26

passionate about the topic sometimes but

play01:29

that's a little like Life update from me

play01:31

okay but the reason why we're all

play01:32

actually here today is we're going to

play01:34

talk about Hobbies why they actually

play01:35

make you more productive why you

play01:37

actually need them and how you can find

play01:40

them if you feel like you don't have any

play01:41

I want to start off with a realization I

play01:43

had a few years ago so I think a lot of

play01:46

us put so much pressure on our job or

play01:50

our business to be the thing that

play01:52

satisfies us or fulfills us I think

play01:54

especially if you're like doing your own

play01:56

business or you've gone into a career

play01:58

and really chosen it like you've studied

play02:00

it and then you've gone into it right

play02:01

there was an active selection process in

play02:03

that there's almost like a feeling of

play02:06

you want to like it and you want it to

play02:08

be it because you've put so much time

play02:09

and effort into it but I think

play02:11

irrespective whether you're like

play02:13

actively doing something you enjoy

play02:15

whether you're just falling into a job

play02:16

because it just happened the way it

play02:18

happened I think we do put pressure

play02:20

sometimes on our job being the thing

play02:22

that fulfills us and I want to be the

play02:24

one to crack that in half and say that

play02:27

is not the case because I don't think

play02:29

any job in the world could possibly

play02:32

satisfy or fulfill the the range of

play02:35

interests or skills that you have and

play02:37

that's why I think hobbies are the

play02:39

perfect complement to whatever it is

play02:41

you're doing as a 9-to-5 or a business

play02:43

or a side hustle whatever it is you're

play02:45

doing that takes up most your time in

play02:47

the work kind of category you need

play02:49

hobbies to balance it out for the things

play02:51

that you don't get to do in your job and

play02:55

this is exactly where the podcast was

play02:56

born so I was working as a finan lawyer

play03:00

was in a firm in Sydney and one thing I

play03:03

was really feeling was like I was

play03:05

lacking personal and meaningful kind of

play03:08

conversations with people it was very

play03:10

much like just me and my client work

play03:12

like yes I'd work collabor

play03:13

collaboratively with others but it was

play03:15

very much like a oneman job you just

play03:17

like do your own thing and there wasn't

play03:20

really that like genuine level I was in

play03:22

banking so it was super transactional

play03:24

like I just felt like it was lacking

play03:26

that authenticity and I was really just

play03:28

craving having meaningful connections

play03:30

with people I'm the kind of person that

play03:33

if I was ever at a party growing up I

play03:35

would be that person with a drink like

play03:37

there's red cups in the corner having a

play03:39

full-on DNM deep and meaningful for

play03:41

those of you who don't know what that

play03:42

means I was having a full-blown DNM with

play03:44

someone in the corner all night long

play03:47

right that was me I'd just be that

play03:48

person that would dive deep into

play03:50

conversations it's always something I've

play03:52

really enjoyed doing and so I noticed

play03:54

quite early on like that was something I

play03:56

really actively felt like I was missing

play03:58

I was lacking and so when I noticed that

play04:01

about myself I was like how do I how do

play04:03

I explore this how do I bring this how

play04:05

do I do this more like how can I create

play04:07

space for this and the podcast seemed

play04:09

like a perfect place to do that to have

play04:12

really deep conversations to explore

play04:14

interesting authentic kind of

play04:15

conversations that I wasn't getting in

play04:18

my job and then I think where this

play04:19

journey took me was realizing that we're

play04:22

not meant to have one skill to have one

play04:25

interest to be in one vertical not only

play04:27

in this moment but for your whole life

play04:30

right you're

play04:31

multi-talented by nature of being a

play04:33

human I had um a beautiful woman named

play04:36

Sheen GB I had her on the podcast a few

play04:38

weeks ago if you haven't had a chance to

play04:40

check out that interview check it out

play04:41

because she has had like every career or

play04:44

job you could think of she's chopped and

play04:46

changed quite a lot and one of the

play04:47

things she loves talking about is how

play04:49

multi-talented we are as humans and how

play04:52

to explore all this and chop and change

play04:54

and have the confidence to do that which

play04:56

was a really enlightening chat so save

play04:58

that one for later if you haven't

play04:59

already but needless to say we're not

play05:01

meant to have one skill you're not meant

play05:03

to have one skill you can perfect one

play05:05

and then start embracing other things

play05:06

you're good at right you're not meant to

play05:08

just be good at one thing you don't have

play05:10

to be good at one thing you can do as

play05:12

much or as little as you would like but

play05:14

I want to talk about one probably

play05:16

unspoken aspect of all of this and this

play05:18

is something that I felt and that was

play05:20

almost like I had to be Hush Hush about

play05:23

my personal interests because I felt

play05:25

like by talking about them at work it

play05:27

would almost make me look like less

play05:30

productive or less interested in my job

play05:32

you know if I had all this time to be

play05:34

doing stuff outside not that I was

play05:36

really expected to work on weekends I

play05:38

don't know it's like weird now that I

play05:39

reflect on it but I just almost felt

play05:42

like no one else was talking about their

play05:44

interests and so if I was like sticking

play05:46

my head out and saying well this is all

play05:48

the stuff I'm doing it kind of made me

play05:50

look less interested in my job which is

play05:53

strange to me now but I can

play05:55

wholeheartedly say that was something I

play05:57

really struggled with I was Hush Hush I

play05:58

wouldn't post much my personal I would

play06:00

kind of hope people wouldn't find out

play06:02

and I remember one of the uh partners of

play06:04

a completely different team I mean my

play06:06

boss kind of knew my partner at the time

play06:08

knew about the podcast and you know it

play06:10

was like whatever but someone else in

play06:12

another team found out and asked me to

play06:14

send a firmwide email like sharing the

play06:16

podcast and I was like oh wow like do

play06:18

you think people would be interested and

play06:20

then I really grappled with like oh I

play06:22

don't know like I don't want people to

play06:23

think I'm that person that's like half

play06:25

in work half not but where I have come

play06:28

to is like complet completely full

play06:30

circle I now am so like interested in

play06:33

what people are interested in outside of

play06:35

work because really we're all there

play06:37

doing the same thing what makes us

play06:38

different are our interests and those

play06:41

things only add value to who you are as

play06:43

a person they create your character and

play06:46

I actually think if you can get to a

play06:48

place where you have your job you

play06:49

identify the things that are lacking or

play06:51

the skills you're not able to use in

play06:53

that job instead of putting pressure on

play06:55

your job for trying to be that one thing

play06:57

that ticks all the boxes and you have

play06:58

these other Outlets that you can

play07:00

actually leverage off to utilize those

play07:03

skills or have like space for them it

play07:05

makes you better and more satisfied in

play07:07

the job you're doing it doesn't take

play07:09

away from it and once I had this shift

play07:11

it was so powerful I started to really

play07:13

honor the things I was doing because I

play07:15

knew it didn't make me less productive

play07:17

at my job I did my job I am very like

play07:21

proud of my quality of work and the

play07:23

level of care and diligence I have in my

play07:25

role and none of that changed just

play07:26

because I had a podcast on the side you

play07:28

know this isn't a five day a week thing

play07:30

for me it's a weekend task it's a oneman

play07:32

job I do everything myself you know I've

play07:35

obviously become better at it as time

play07:36

has gone on in terms of my productivity

play07:39

with it and the way I've optimized

play07:41

things but it had nothing to do with my

play07:43

job like my free time is my free time so

play07:45

I think once you realize that having

play07:48

Hobbies can actually add so much value

play07:50

to what you do because it holds space

play07:54

and creates opportunities for you to do

play07:56

things that you're lacking in your role

play07:57

this changed everything and this is

play08:00

really the flavor of today's chat and

play08:01

why having Hobbies make you more

play08:03

productive because I think the counter

play08:06

is you end up getting a lot of

play08:07

resentment because your work isn't

play08:09

fulfilling you the way you want and

play08:11

let's be honest like a lot of hobbies

play08:12

are not that fruitful financially you

play08:14

know they're more for your soul they're

play08:16

more fulfilling to you and your interest

play08:19

you know that doesn't mean they can't be

play08:20

fruitful but really they should be there

play08:23

to give you space and freedom to first

play08:26

and foremost just explore skills or

play08:28

interests that you can't do in your job

play08:30

it takes the pressure off your job and

play08:32

it really actually makes you better

play08:34

because you're just there to embrace

play08:36

those skills and then you're able to

play08:37

have Avenues and outlets for other

play08:40

skills and collectively on the whole

play08:42

that gives a much better life experience

play08:44

so that's kind of how I came to a point

play08:46

where I realized okay my hobbies or my

play08:48

interests are part of who I am and they

play08:51

actually make me more productive because

play08:52

of this Dynamic with an outlet or the

play08:55

space they hold for skills I don't get

play08:56

to use in my job so you might be

play08:59

listening and thinking okay I get that I

play09:01

understand that makes perfect sense to

play09:03

me but how do I find what those things

play09:06

are so of course like always I'm going

play09:07

to give you some practical steps or or a

play09:10

reflection that you can undertake to I

play09:13

guess try and work this out step one is

play09:15

really thinking about what those Hobbies

play09:17

could be right so you might have an idea

play09:19

maybe you've tried some stuff maybe you

play09:21

have no idea and you're like I really

play09:22

need some guidance in this so there's a

play09:25

few ways you could think about this the

play09:27

first way is like me was thinking about

play09:31

what am I lacking in my role what do I

play09:34

feel I don't get to do what's a skill or

play09:36

an interest of mine or something I

play09:37

really wish I could do in this job you

play09:40

know that's a good indicator like an

play09:42

aspect you wish you could have in your

play09:44

role or maybe you wish you could be more

play09:46

Hands-On on people's side or admin side

play09:48

or whatever it is right like get curious

play09:50

about what that Gap is what you feel

play09:52

like you're missing and that may

play09:54

identify an interest or a skill or

play09:56

something that you want to be embracing

play09:58

right that could be one way another way

play10:00

is reflecting on your childhood what

play10:03

things that you used to love doing as a

play10:04

child you know before you had to worry

play10:06

about making money and having

play10:07

responsibilities like what things did

play10:09

you naturally gravitate to or even like

play10:11

what are you just interested in today

play10:13

what kind of content do you like

play10:14

consuming and what are the topic areas

play10:16

or um interests that are associated with

play10:19

that content for me for example I love

play10:21

home wear I love going to little home

play10:22

wear stores I love watching home wear

play10:25

being put together and like styling a

play10:26

house which is how I got on the path of

play10:28

going to Ceramics that's now a hobby

play10:32

that I've been doing for a few months

play10:33

now I've learned how to do it because I

play10:35

love spending my money on buying

play10:37

Ceramics and if I could learn how to do

play10:39

it and make pieces for my house I'm

play10:41

getting two things there I'm getting the

play10:42

Fulfillment and Joy from the time spent

play10:44

doing something which is like a skill I

play10:47

never get to use like Hands-On crafty

play10:49

Arts don't get to do that while I'm

play10:51

being a lawyer at all so I get that and

play10:53

then I also get a piece to take home so

play10:56

it's been this nice Synergy between

play10:58

finding what I enjoy and something I'm

play11:00

not getting in my current job and

play11:01

something I am interested in which is

play11:03

now converted into a hobby also there's

play11:05

an element of experimentation right like

play11:08

how could I have possibly known I would

play11:09

have liked podcasting if I never tried

play11:11

it so I don't think it's that useful to

play11:14

be like hm would I like doing painting

play11:16

probably not you know because of XY Z

play11:18

like how much is it going to cost you to

play11:20

just go to a Saturday class or get some

play11:23

paint sent to your house and try it for

play11:24

a few weeks and just see how you feel

play11:27

you know like it's difficult to say

play11:28

you're not going to like something

play11:30

without trying it unless you've done

play11:31

something remotely similar before so

play11:33

there is an element of trial and error

play11:35

and just putting yourself out there and

play11:36

experimenting so those are my tips for

play11:38

finding what that thing is but some of

play11:39

you might be sitting here like okay

play11:41

Erica great like I've got a full-time

play11:42

job I've got a few things I want to try

play11:45

where do I find a time to do them and

play11:47

I'm glad you asked because step two is

play11:49

all about balance which is you know my

play11:51

bread and butter and this means you need

play11:53

to go back to your priority list you

play11:56

need to go back to your balance

play11:57

assessment and work out what your

play11:59

priorities are and if having an outlet

play12:02

for different skills if having an outlet

play12:05

that helps you enjoy your job more be

play12:07

more productive in what you're doing or

play12:09

just give you a little bit more of a

play12:10

well-rounded experience of how you're

play12:12

spending your time if that's something

play12:14

that's important to you that you feel

play12:15

would really add value then it needs to

play12:17

be a priority and what we know about our

play12:20

approach to balance is once it's a

play12:21

priority you make time for it because

play12:24

your time is scheduled around your

play12:26

priorities so for those of you that are

play12:29

newer to this that haven't heard the

play12:30

terms of like balance areas as garden

play12:33

beds or priority lists or anything like

play12:35

that I'm going to link in the show notes

play12:37

a free 20-minute Workshop I did on

play12:39

YouTube I Did It On Stage last year and

play12:41

it will basically take you through and

play12:43

paint a picture of what your life

play12:45

balance looks like right now and then

play12:47

how to actually time block that how to

play12:49

make time for everything how to plan

play12:51

your schedule it's 20 minutes and it

play12:53

will honestly change your life so check

play12:55

out the link that will show you how to

play12:57

start planning your time so you can fit

play12:59

in all these things and maybe fit in

play13:01

something that's now a new priority for

play13:03

you as well and you guys never know what

play13:06

Journey your hobbies will take you on

play13:07

maybe it's going to be something you

play13:08

enjoy for a little bit and you know you

play13:10

get a few pieces for home like me maybe

play13:12

I won't do it forever maybe it'll be

play13:14

like a podcast something that you end up

play13:16

enjoying and you know I I couldn't have

play13:19

told you all the places the podcast has

play13:20

taken me I've been able to do it from

play13:22

all around the world I've been able to

play13:23

speak on stage I've been able to

play13:25

interview incredible people uh you know

play13:27

you never know where these Hobbies will

play13:29

take you so there's an element of trial

play13:31

and error there's an element of getting

play13:32

to know yourself a little bit more but

play13:34

don't get stuck in that oh I just have

play13:35

no idea what I'm going to do like there

play13:37

are many ways you can find what those

play13:39

things are and you have to just be a

play13:41

little bit open and flexible to the fact

play13:43

that it might be a bit of trial and

play13:44

error but once you find something you

play13:47

really enjoy and it adds out value to

play13:49

your life and changes the way you view a

play13:51

job and you no longer resent it or you

play13:53

start enjoying it more or you just have

play13:55

a little bit more of a well-rounded

play13:57

experience of your life and the way

play13:58

you're enjoying it is so invaluable in

play14:01

my eyes so I hope you guys have loved

play14:03

this episode this is your sign to

play14:06

prioritize your hobbies find them or you

play14:09

know prioritize them if you've already

play14:11

identified what they are because they

play14:13

are such a beautiful value ad and also

play14:16

like a little reminder to just be

play14:17

curious about what other people's

play14:19

interests are outside of work too like

play14:20

we don't need to perpetuate this culture

play14:23

where we're at work and we just work you

play14:25

know I think corporate can be a bit like

play14:26

that sometimes and as I said you can

play14:28

feel like you want to be a bit Hush Hush

play14:30

about your interests but talk to people

play14:33

get curious ask what their hobbies are

play14:34

it really just paint a beautiful

play14:36

well-rounded picture of who they are

play14:38

helps you get to know them and who knows

play14:40

maybe someone else's interests or

play14:41

Hobbies will inspire you for something

play14:43

you want to try too so that's today's

play14:46

episode guys if anyone's come to mind in

play14:48

this 15 or so minutes that we've been

play14:51

play14:53

play14:54

play14:59
