Highlights
Cycads have been around for over 250 million years, surviving through prehistoric events including mass extinctions.
Australia is home to nearly 100 native species of cycads.
Dr. James Clugston, a leading expert on cycads in Australia, attributes his passion to their ancient lineage and the likelihood that their ancestors were eaten by dinosaurs.
Australian cycads are some of the most iconic looking cycads in the world.
Lepidozamia periana, a New South Wales native plant, has cones that can weigh up to 40 kg.
The main seed distributors for cycads, which were large mammals, are now extinct, leading to seeds primarily being distributed by gravity.
Cycads are adaptable garden plants that can take both sun and shade.
Some cycads in the wild can live up to 4,500 years old.
Pygas Mega Cara, a species from Queensland, has a structurally interesting trunk with visible growth rings.
Cycads have separate male and female plants, with female plants having structures called megasporophylls.
Cycad seeds are only viable for around 2 years, requiring them to be grown in living collections in botanic gardens for conservation.
Cycads are good garden plants, suitable for balconies, due to their slow growth and adaptability to different conditions.
Macrozamia spiralis, a New World native, has a twisted stem and is well-suited to fire-prone habitats.
The blue-green glaucous coating on the leaves of Macrozamia mcdonaldiae is a natural adaptation that acts like a sunscreen, allowing it to survive in arid conditions.
Cycads can be sourced from specialist nurseries and palm shows.
Dr. Clugston has about 30 species of cycads growing on his balcony, showcasing their potential as balcony plants.
Transcripts
they have been around for over 250
million years taking their time to
evolve through all sorts of prehistoric
dramas from mass extinctions to the
newer challenges we have created for
them everything about pads may seem long
and
slow but they're survivors and Australia
has nearly 100 native
species Dr James clugston is a man
passionate about p ads and has traveled
the world hunting them down the pad
spell uprooted him from the UK to
Australia where he settled and is now
the leading expert here at Mount Anam
Royal botanic garden where did the
passion for pads come from oh psychs are
really old and it's likely that their
ancestors would have been eaten by
dinosaurs I've always liked dinosaurs to
kids so psychs seem like a a logical
area to go and Australian pads are
probably some of the most iconic looking
pads you can ever
see this plant is spectacular what is it
this is lepido zamia periana this is
actually a New South Wales native plant
they have really big cones and these
cones can weigh up to 40 kg so it's
pretty heavy how are the seeds
distributed well these days the seeds
just basically drop by gravity and
that's because the main seed
Distributors which are large MEAP for
are now
extinct and would you say that it's a a
good Garden plant this plant is actually
really nice it's not that spiky it can
take the Sun but it can also take a lot
of shade as well so it's really
adaptable how long can we expect a plant
like this to live this plant is probably
not that old but in the wild you can
probably get spim 4 500 years old quite
easily wow well beyond our lifetime and
beond our children's
lifetime so this one here the trunk is
quite tall and slender this is a species
called pyas Mega Cara and it's from
Queensland but they're quite adaptable
in many different growing conditions and
it does have quite a narrow trunk but
you can see how structurally interesting
this trunk is you can see these like
stations almost lines on the trunk
they're actually grow rings so these
plants are what called Dias so they have
separate male and female plants and
these structures that kind of hanging
down these are the old female structures
what we call to as Mega spor fills
basically spor fills being like a
leaflike adaptive structure and if you
look in the scenter of the stem that is
the female cone structure itself and the
seeds for pads only viable for around 2
years so you can't actually store them
in seed banks so we have to grow them in
the living collections of botanic
gardens to be able to conserve
them a really good reason as to why more
people should be growing them in their
Gardens absolutely psychos Mega carp is
actually a really good Garden plant and
they're really good on the balcony as
well cuz they suit really well to pots
and the reason why is they're slow
growing but they reach a finite size and
unlike Palms that can keep on growing
these plants don't do that and also they
don't drop Mass it FRS as well onto the
ground this plant wants a bit more sun
generally speaking but if you get a bit
more shade it works fine for
[Music]
these
this is macrozamia spirales and this is
a new sou world's
native but this is what you would wear
to as a DWF
C but take a look at the leaves so these
are the actual leaflets if you look at
where the leaflet connects to the the
stem of the leaf which we call the rikus
you can see this orange red callus and
this is a really good identifier for the
genus maami in general if you look at
the stem itself and you see how it's
twisted and it tsts
around this is how this plant gets its
name of macam spiralis because of the
spiral
shape you'll probably find the clump
moreall a little bit in the wild but
other than that this is pretty much
extent that they actually grow to and it
makes a probably a good plant for little
garden situation yeah it's perfect and
I'm guessing good for pots too you know
it's okay for a pot plant they actually
have a really big root system
underground because generally speaking
pads either have a stem or they have
like an underground stem which is a fire
prevention strategy cuz these grow in
really fire prone habitats often you
find this species in breakes and the
canopy this plant can cope with full sun
what about drought tolerance if you got
this in your garden I would probably
never even think about it again you just
leave it do not water it and if people
want to Source these plants where can
they find them these are available in
specialist nurseries but there are
psyched and palm shows that happen for
year that are really good places to try
psyched seeds and actually this genus
macrozamia is the largest genus in
Australia but this is not Australia's
most iconic
[Music]
species so what is so iconic about this
psad oh look at it it's incredible this
is maami McDonald ey from the McDonald
ranges near Alice Springs Central
Australia if you look at the
leaves it's got this like blue green
coating to the leaves and things and
this is like a natural adaptation we
call this Glaucus and what it is it's
actually a RX layer up the top of the
leaf that's actually helping to protect
the plant like a natural sunscreen so it
can survive in the most driest and most
arid conditions I wouldn't say you could
rub it on you and help you but people
probably have
tried this is a plant that want wants a
full sun spot to really make it shine
and properly work it makes a great pot
plant actually it will require a big pot
when it grows to like a plant this size
but if you do put in the garden this
plant will probably get two or three
times this size and what's your garden
like are there psych ads everywhere well
I don't have a garden I have a balcony
but I have plans on the balcony and I
have probably about 30 species of pyats
growing at home so I really care about
these plants and I enjoy growing them
because they are great display
