in Lina's tent with his motto and Najib
they were careful to keep the sandals
away from the two boys for his Matt who
wanted to pull up the flowers and the G
wanted to chew on them when they did not
have work to do Lina and for Rosa crept
up to the windows of the school
and peeked inside the school was small
with only enough room for the boys to
study the girls practice their name in
the dirt and brushed the marks away so
no one would see their mistakes
sometimes
each girl wore one sandal other children
pointed and giggled but Lina and
firoozeh did not care in the evenings
the sky turned deep blue and the first
stars began to Sparkle lina and fir rosa
watched for the sliver of a crescent
moon that signals the beginning of
Ramadan they shared memories and
whispered their dreams for a new home
one morning they went to the stream and
washed their sandals to keep them

Rosa
if Lina a hug when it was time to leave
a relief worker gave mama a large square
white bag with numbers on it all of your
important papers are in this bag he said
for Rosa and her grandmother came to say

wear these the tears in her eyes were
not for the sandals assalamualaikum /

and blue sandals peace be with you
Lena followed the others to the bus wait
for Rosa called as she ran to her friend
he must keep one she handed Lena one
sandal
what good is one sandal it is good to
remember for Rosa held up the other
sandal for feet two sandals Lena felt
the tears make a trail down her cheek
she slept the sandal into her bag and
climbed on the bus for Rosa ran
alongside as the bus began to move lena
leaned out the window
we will share again in America
she called and you can see there on the
last page for Rosa waving goodbye to the
bus waving goodbye to Lena holding one
sandal in the air and I supposed the
