📚 Introduction to Special Education
Professor Michelle Capoli introduces the foundational concepts of special education, emphasizing the field's focus on providing tailored support and opportunities for students with disabilities. The lecture aims to articulate these concepts, highlighting the importance of understanding the procedural aspects and impact on students and their families. Special education is defined as specially designed instruction provided at no cost to meet the unique needs of children with disabilities. Inclusive education, as part of special education, involves individualized support within the general education classroom, known as the least restrictive environment. The benefits of inclusive education, such as social integration and academic growth, are also discussed. Additionally, the lecture touches on the importance of continuity in education, especially for students who require instruction at home or in other settings due to medical or severe disabilities. The role of case managers and professionals in ensuring specially designed instruction is delivered effectively is highlighted, including in physical education where adapted PE teachers and assistive technology are crucial for student participation.
🚌 Related Services in Special Education
This section delves into the concept of related services as defined by the Code of Virginia, which are necessary to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education. The list of services is not exhaustive and can include a wide range of developmental, corrective, or supportive services. Transportation services are highlighted as crucial for enabling students with disabilities to attend school and access services. Speech-language services, audiology, and interpretation services are discussed for their role in improving language skills, managing hearing impairments, and facilitating communication for non-English speaking or sign language users. Physical and occupational therapy services are described for their contributions to improving students' mobility, motor skills, and independence in daily activities. Recreation services are noted for promoting socialization, leisure skills, and physical well-being. Social work services address social-emotional and family-related challenges, while school nurse services provide medical support, including managing chronic conditions and ensuring health and safety. The importance of these services in supporting the holistic education experience of students with disabilities is emphasized.
🛠️ Supplementary Aids and Services in Special Education
The final paragraph focuses on supplementary aids and services, which are supports provided in various settings to enable children with disabilities to be educated with non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate. These aids and services are individualized and discussed at a student's yearly IEP meeting. Examples include word prediction software to support writing difficulties, preferential seating to accommodate hearing or vision impairments, and graphic organizers to assist with organization and understanding. Other aids like extended time on classwork and tests, augmentative communication devices, and opportunities for oral responses are also mentioned. The paragraph underscores the importance of individualizing these aids and services based on ongoing assessment and collaboration, ensuring their appropriateness and effectiveness. The lecture concludes with a hope that the information provided will aid in understanding the foundational concepts of special education and serve as a starting point for further exploration of legal aspects and critical issues within the field.

hello everyone I'm Professor Michelle
capoli in this brief lecture we will
explore the foundational Concepts that
Define and shape the field of special
education so let's
begin foundational concepts of special
education presented by me Professor
Michelle capoli in April
2024 the learning outcome for this
lecture is artic the foundational
Concepts that Define special
education when you think about special
education what comes to
mind special education is a field
dedicated to providing tailor support
and opportunities for students with
disabilities While most students thrive
in general education a small percentage
require additional
supports special education incompasses a
diverse range of services and programs
designed to meet the individual needs of
these students ensuring they receive a
holistic education
experience as future Educators it's
really important to embrace the
complexity of special education
understanding its procedural aspects
alongside its impact on students and
their families throughout this lecture
we'll discuss three key Concepts that
form the foundation for all special
education
services the first concept is special
education itself we're always using this
term but what does it really mean
it firstly means specially designed
instruction which is provided at no cost
to parents to meet the unique needs of a
child with a
disability so what does this look like
in the
classroom inclusive education is when
students with disabilities received
individualized support from special
education teachers par professionals or
other professionals while still
participating in the general education
classroom this is also known as the
least restrictive environment which we
will explore in more deta detail in
modules 1 and
two there are many benefits of inclusive
education supported by research such as
fostering social
integration and promoting academic
growth for all
students in some cases children with
disabilities may require instruction at
home these include Extended Medical
absences or severe disabilities that
prevent regular School
attendance collaboration between
teachers parents and professionals to
ensure delivery of specially designed
instruction in the home is
critical the same goes for instruction
that may need to be provided in
hospitals or other settings such as
community centers specialized schools or
vocational training centers it's
important to ensure continuity
continuity of a student's
education specially designed instruction
also includes instruction in physical
education or PE so why is this important
physical education is important in
promoting overall development including
physical Fitness motor skills and social
interaction and it has a positive impact
on the well-being and academic
performance of students including those
with
disabilities case managers and the
general education PE teacher should also
work with Specialists such as an adapted
PE teacher to secure assistive devices
adaptive equipment and Technology to
facilitate participation and inclusion
in physical education
activities now we will take a look at
the foundational concept related
Services as defi defined by the code of
Virginia related Services means
transportation in such developmental
corrective and other Supportive Services
as are required to assist a child with a
disability to benefit from special
education the list we're reviewing today
is not exhaustive and may include other
developmental corrective or Supportive
Services so let's briefly describe some
of the related Services students in
special education
receive first transportation services
transportation services provide students
with disabilities the opportunity to
attend school and access related
Services

page on related Services the link can be
found at the bottom of this
slide now we will examine the third
foundational concept supplementary AIDS
and
services for the center for parent
information and resources supplementary
AIDS and services means AIDS services
and other supports that are provided in
general education classes other
education related settings and an
extracurricular in non-academic settings
to enable children with disabilities to
be educated with non-disabled children
to the maximum extent
appropriate these AIDS and services are
designed to address the individualized
needs of each student and are discussed
at length at a students yearly IEP
meeting here are some examples of
supplementary AIDS and
services first word prediction software
word prediction software cons support
students with writing difficulties or
disabilities this software assists
students by offering word suggestions as
they type enhancing their writing speed
accuracy and overall
productivity personalized word
prediction adapts to individual students
vocabulary and writing
styles another example is preferential
seating preferential seating involves
placing students with disabilities and
strategic locations within the
classroom it can help students with
hearing or Vision impairment
attention difficulties or sensory
sensitivities an IEP team might consider
preferential seating to Pro provide
proximity to the teacher minimizing
distractions and facilitating
communication and
engagement other examples include
graphic
organizers extended time on classwork
and tests augmentative communication
devices opportunity to take breaks
opportunity to respond orally and many
others when you learn about IEPs
accommodations and modifications we will
discuss this in more
detail individualizing supplementary
AIDS and services to meet each student's
unique needs is
imperative selection and implementation
of these supports should be based on
ongoing assessment observation and
collaboration it is necessary to
regularly review and adjust
supplementary AIDS and services to
ensure their appropriateness and
Effectiveness each year at the annual
IEP review
I hope that this brief lecture has
helped you better understand the
foundational concepts of special
education and that this will help you
get started on your legal aspects and
critical issues in special education
have a wonderful day
