Transcripts
Every Pride Month, we hear of many lettersand terms about gender and sexuality:
SOGIE or SOGIESC
LGBT, LGBTQ+.
And growing up in a society where it’s common for kids to be put in schools exclusively for girls or boys,
we only identify two sexes:
lalaki at babae, man or woman, male or female.
But as our understanding of human sexuality continues to evolve,
we realize that we’re not just limited to this binary—
the concept has always been there, we just didn’t have names for them, until today.
As we look back at Pride Month, we’re here to lay out what SOGIESC actually is.
SOGIESC, more commonly known as SOGIE, seems really complex.
But it’s all about celebrating and recognizing the diversity of an individual’s gender and sexuality.
We got in touch with Ivanka Custudio, an LGBTIQ+ rights activist from the organization Camp Queer
to explain to us what all those letters mean
SOGIE is an acronym that stands for: Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression.
Often used in human rights discussions to describe
yung aspects ng pagkatao ng mga tao.
That have to do with how they express themselves,
who they love or how they connect with other people and how they live their truths.
So, everyone has their own SOGIE
because everyone has their own way of expressing themselves in a gendered sense,
everyone has their own way with connecting with other people
everyone needs to live in a way that is authentic to who they are.
Sexual orientation describes who is one attracted to, desires or loves.
And often labels that are used to describe sexual orientation include:
lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual and many other labels that people use to signify their own experiences.
Gender identity describes how one sees themselves which are either: man, woman, neither or both.
For many people their gender identity is the same as their sex assigned at birth
or what the doctors say right when they were born.
“It’s a boy!" or "It’s a girl!”
If that’s the case for you, then you are cisgender.
But for many people as well, their gender identity isnt the same as what their birth certificates reflect,
and these people are described as transgender.
And under this there are transgender men, women and non-binary and many other identitites that fall under the umbrella of transgender.
Gender Expression is used to describe how one expresses themselves,
that is often seen as gendered.
For instance, how one dresses, acts or speaks
that are often interpreted as masculine, feminine or androgynous.
And gender expression can also refer to how one expresses their gender.
Another way to articulate SOGIESC is through the Philippine LGBT Chamber of Commerce’s 4Ws.
We got to talk to Angel Romero of the Chamber to show us how they explain the 4Ws.
The 4Ws are: what parts you have (sexual characteristics),
who you are attracted to (sexual orientation),
which gender you are or how you identify yourself (gender identity),
and way you are or how you express yourselves (gender expression).
Our understanding of sexuality is continuously evolving.
For a time we Filipinos only used the words “bakla” and “tomboy,” to describe our queers.
What SOGIE is not about is forcing people to become LGBTIQ.
It's really about bringing awareness to the fact that people should be respected and be allowed to thrive regardless of their SOGIE.
The experiences of LGBTIQ people that we hear everyday,
their experiences of discrimination and violence.
It points to the fact that while there is a level of tolerance for LGBTIQ people,
we're still not equal, we're still very much vulnerable
when it comes to exercising our rights--even just our right to live.
The best thing to do about it is educate not hate
because people may not really understand, diba?
At the end of the day its just about educating people about it,
and making sure that you come from a place of respect.
