I'm John J McDermott and I'm here to
introduce to you the life and food of
William James I came upon his writings
in psychology philosophy and religion
more than fifty years ago and he
continues to inspire me teach me and
help me to be aware of how as he writes
life concretely comes the work of
William James provides meaning without
false assurance and encourages us to be
open to experiences other than our own
and to always seek possibility in all
beliefs decisions in short I find
William James to be a liberating thinker
in my life I want to share that gift
with you
in this film we shall first discuss the
range of topics that James approach in
his study of human nature then we give
you some background to understand his
own life course we shall then discuss
his conceptions of habit the stream of
consciousness and we'll beyond his great
contributions to the academic field of
psychology the legacy of William James
lies in its powerful and liberating
insights into the vast and often
untapped possibilities of human lives
his legacy is immense he seeded the
field of psychology with a breadth of
topics in his own quest to understand
both the commonalities and individual
differences in human nature he
understood that each of us is always
taking an experience and melding it onto
our ever-changing relational fabric our
actions then change our experience
nothing is ever the same as long as
there is life there is novelty and thus
possibility when I go into a meeting to
celebrate three years of sobriety and
somebody else that day is celebrating
six months of sobriety and I feel better
for them for that six months than I do
about myself because I used to be the
the loudest person in the room I wanted
to have the best one-liners I wanted to
be on TV and be famous and and what
about my needs and this and that but now
I take great comfort in and seeing
somebody else get out of their old
behavior because I truly feel that if
you're if you're going to come into the
rooms and you're going to get sober you
really have to change your behavior
James doesn't give us formulas to lead
our own lives but he does give us a push
not to settle for certainty but to seek
out openings that resonate in this wider
relational fabric but James also warns
us how we transact with the world if not
the only transaction of the way we can
find ourselves a go central not taking
into account the relationships available
to us and
with fellow beings and thus hook to the
dead ends of vacant self-determination
my way or no way
or we can go too much with the flow
without finding our particular way
ignoring the inner messages that often
come to us in vague punches we can hook
ourselves too rigid formulations
political or religious and find that our
own person gets swallowed up in loyalty
to unworthy beats and ideas and we
forget to open even one of the doors
available to us following the lead of
William James it makes pre-eminent sense
to celebrate the powers which we possess
although all the while recognizing the
perils of overstepping the mark by our
claims he reminded us that there is a
never not quite - all our formulations
and novelty possibility for ever leaking
in
you
