📚 Early Life and Educational Background
Axel Honneth, a German philosopher currently teaching at Columbia University, shares his journey to the theory of recognition. He grew up in the Ruhr region, an industrial center in Germany, from a relatively affluent physician family during the optimistic 1950s. Despite the economic boom and social mobility in the 1960s, his awareness of social issues was minimal until he entered high school. The influx of working-class students into the German gymnasiums marked a new social experience, and Honneth's friendships with these students from worker families exposed him to a different social reality. This led to his first profound educational experience, as he felt a sense of shame and discomfort about the disparities in living conditions and opportunities between his friends and himself.
🎭 The Impact of Social Inequality on Emotional Life
Honneth's reflections on social inequality and its emotional impact began in his early adolescence, around the age of 12 or 13. He was particularly affected by the shame associated with social class and inequality. His poor academic performance in school did not hinder his engagement with cultural activities outside of it, such as literature, drama, and the burgeoning film industry. A pivotal moment was his emotional response to Arthur Miller's play 'Death of a Salesman,' which highlighted the role of social shame in the life of a working-class father. This experience deepened his interest in understanding how social inequalities manifest emotionally in individuals' lives.
🎓 University Studies and Focus on Social Inequality
Upon entering university, Honneth initially considered following his family's medical path but chose philosophy, sociology, and Germanistics against his parents' wishes. His studies at the University of Bonn and later at the University of Bochum were broad, including psychology, but he soon lost interest in it, focusing more on philosophy and sociology. His interest in class structure and social inequality led him to seminars and independent research on these topics. His philosophical interests included German Idealism and philosophical anthropology, but he was increasingly influenced by Critical Theory and the socialist student movement, particularly the work of Michel Foucault on the disciplinary mechanisms of modern society.
🛠️ Developing the Theory of Recognition
Honneth's academic focus narrowed to the study of socialization processes under class-specific conditions and the Frankfurt School tradition. He began to distance himself from the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School, feeling it overestimated the integration of lower social strata into capitalist society. Instead, he believed that feelings of degradation and humiliation experienced by these strata should manifest in some form of social resistance. His dissertation, 'Critique of Power,' was an attempt to integrate various influences into a unified concept, focusing on the idea that societies are in a state of permanent conflict over the recognition of their own validity claims. This marked the beginning of his development towards the theory of recognition, which posits that certain emotions, such as disrespect and shame, are central to understanding social conflicts.

will nun zunächst darüber berichten wie
ich auf die Theorie der Anerkennung
gestoßen bin was also die zentralen
Erfahrung in meiner Jugend und in meiner
Ausbildung waren die mich auf diese
Theorie gebracht haben ich bin groß
geworden im Ruhrgebiet einem
industriellen Zentrum in
Deutschland ich stamme aus einer
Arztfamilie relativ gut begütert wurde
in den 50er Jahren 1950er Jahren groß
eine Zeit die im Wesentlichen geprägt
war von einem Optimismus mit Blick auf
die Zukunft
[Musik]
man schaute kaum zurück in den
Nationalsozialismus die Vergangenheit
wurde verdrängt der Blick richtete sich
energisch nach vorne in der Hoffnung auf
wirtschaftliches Fortkommen und
Besserstellung ich wuchs also behütet
neues soziales
bürgerlichen Milieu ich besuchte also
meine Freunde in Stadtteilen die ich
zuvor kaum kennengelernt
hatte die vollkommen anders aussahen als
die aus denen ich
stammte
russverschwerzte Häuser man sah schon
Familienumfeld
äh also meine Freunde eigentlich so zu
erleben interessant aber war vor allem
dass
die Freunde von mir eigentlich ähnlich
reagierten auch sie waren das ist nicht
nur eine Beobachtung die ich jetzt
rückblickend mache sondern es ging mir
damals schon durch und durch auch die
Waren von Scham erfüllt schämten sich
ihre eigenen beklemmenden Lebensform so
dass ich muss sagen relativ früh im
Alter von 12 oder 13 Jahren aufmerksam
wurde auf die emotionale Bedeutung sage
ich mal der
Ungleichstellung und der sozialen
Ungleichheit also wie gesagt ich war ein
schlechter Schüler in der Schule versag
im Gymnasium versagte ich weitgehend
mich beschäftigte aber sobald ich außer
der Schule war außerhalb der Schule war
alles mögliche in der Kultur von der
Literatur über die Welt des
Dramas die damalige Musik der Film der
damals groß im Aufbruch war und die
Fragen die mich an diesen ganzen
künstlerischen Medien vor allen Dingen
Beschäftigten hing mit dieser Erfahrung
glaube ich sehr zentral zusammen mich
erfüllte also mit Interesse die Frage
wie sich eigentlich diese sozialen
Ungleichheiten im emotionalen Leben der
Subjekte niederschlagen ein Roman den
ich besonders ein Drama dass ich
besonders starke Erinnerung habe aus der
damaligen Zeit ist das Drama Tod eines
Handlungsreisenden von AR Miller das
damals unendlich häufig in Deutsch stand
verschweigt jeden Morgen also das Haus
verlässt
jeden Abend mit einer kleinen Tasche
wieder ins Haus
kommt und den Schein eines auskömmlichen
Arbeitslebens seinen Kindern gegenüber
und seiner Frau gegenüber aufrech erhält
man sieht an diesem Stück mit
unglaublicher Brillanz eigentlich welche
Rolle die soziale Scham in der sozialen
Interaktion spielt ja dieser Mann
schämte sich der Tatsache nicht
vollwertiger Bürger arbeitsbürger zu
sein im Grunde genommen die Bedingung
eines ordentlichen bürgerlichen Lebens
verloren zu haben und er schämte sich
dieser Realität so stark dass er sie
seinen eigenen Kindern und seiner
eigenen Familie gegenüber
verheimlichte das ganze bricht nachher
zusammen das Drama endet sehr
traurig
aber es ich erwähne das eigentlich nur
weil es mich damals zu tiefst aufgerühte
[Musik]
Psychologie hinzu begann mein Studium an
zunehmend beeinflusst damals schon vom
von der Deutschen von der
sozialistischen Studentenbewegung auch
die Kritische Theorie ich konzentrierte
mich mehr und mehr in meinem Studium
eigentlich auf diese beiden Schwerpunkte
einerseits die Soziologie die
Erforschung von sozialisationsprozessen
unter klassenspezifischen Bedingungen
andererseits die Tradition der
Frankfurter Schule also mein Studium
konzentrierte sich mehr und mehr auf
diese beiden Schwerpunkte ohne dass ich
bereits gewusst hätte worauf ich nun
wirklich hinaus wollte im Hintergrund
immer die mich schon in meiner Jugend
beewegende Frage wie eigentlich wir
besser verstehen können die emotionalen
nie den emotionalen Niederschlag der
sozialen
Ungleichheit ein wenig konkretisierte
sich
mein meine konkretisierten sich meine
Bedürfnisse und meine Strebung als ich
dann an die Freie Universität Berlin
wechselte wo ich vor hatte zu
promovieren einer meiner Professoren
hatte mich gefragt ob ich mit nach
Berlin gehen wollte ich nahm das Angebot
gern an und entwickelte hier zum ersten
Mal doch eine konkretere Vorstellung
davon worauf ich hinaus wollte die Idee
war mich ein wenig abzusetzen von der
Tradition in der ich groß geworden
worden war nämlich der Kritischen
Theorie der Frankfurter Schule die ganze
Tradition eigentlich des man sagt häufig
gern linkshägelanismus ich begann mich
wenig von dieser Tradition wie gesagt in
der ich groß geworden war zu
distanzieren weil ich irgendwie den
Eindruck hatte dass man dort
überschätzte die
Integration der unteren sozialen
Schichten in das kapitalistische
gesellschaftsgefüge mein Gefühl war eher
dass die Gefühle der Herabwürdigung und
der
Demütigung die für diese sozialen
Schichten und Klassen der konstitutiv
ist sich durchaus niederschlagen musste
in irgendeiner Art von
Gegenwehr oder in irgendeiner Art von
sozialer emotionaler Reaktion daraus
entwickelte sich Schritt für Schritt
dann meine Vorstellung dass im Grunde
genommen ich begann dann meine
Dissertation also mit dem Plan eine
Kritik an der Frankfurter Schule zu
entwickeln aber aus einer immanenten
Perspektive also aus der Perspektive
diese eigentlich weiterentwickeln zu
wollen hinzu kam eine Anregung die
damals eine große Rolle spielte an den
deutschen Universitäten nämlich der
Impuls der von der französischen Theorie
ausging vor allen Dingen der Theorie
Michelle fouos der stark in das Zentrum
seiner eigenen Schriften historischen
Untersuchung über die
disziplinierungsmechanismen der modernen
Gesellschaft
äh stark ins Zentrum gerückt hatte die
Vorstellung äh dass Gesellschaften so
etwas sind wie ein Zustand permanenten
Kampfes das entsprach durchaus meiner
Vorstellung dass es mit der sozialen
Integration und der sozialen Akzeptanz
eigentlich seit nicht her sein konnte
wenn doch die sozialen Unterschichten
unter Erfahrung der Missachtung und der
Herabwürdigung leiden mussten dann muss
es ja irgendeine Art des sozialen
Widerstandes gegen diese Verhältnisse
geben also versuchte ich in meiner
Anerkennung zeigen sollte
dass
im grundeenommen bestimmte
Emotionen innerhalb von Gesellschaften
von sehr zentraler Bedeutung sind ja
Emotionen oder Gefühle des der
Missachtung des er niedrig Seins Gefühle
auch der Scham vielleicht der bestimmter
Teile der oberenchichten über ihre
eigene Privilegierung und das ganze
versuchte ich nun in diesem Konzept
eines Konfliktes um
soziale Anerkennung zu
integrieren
