The war has been raging on unabated for more than two years now.

I started this channel in 2020, and I’ve always called myself a Russian politician.

But a lot of people wonder if this description can apply to someone who can’t even enter their country of origin, let alone run for office.

I’d say questioning the relevance of public figures like myself is quite legit.

They say, like, you were part of the liberal opposition who lost.

Putin is running the show, and there’s no liberalism around. Why not switch industries?

Go ahead and keep making analytical videos and documentaries, but why would you call yourself a politician?

Today, I’ll try and answer this question as well as issue a kind of manifesto of my goals and aspirations.

The classical definition of a politician as someone vying for power by participating in the public discussion

and in the elections doesn’t apply in an autocracy where there are no fair elections and the public discussion is stifled.

Our team and myself have been trying to do democratic politics in a non-democratic country since 2012.

I ran for office and helped others do it.

I helped mount what felt like hopeless election campaigns and led a non-profit.

We assisted decent people in getting into politics and helped them get elected as municipal deputies and Moscow Duma deputies.

We helped Navalny in his rather successful Moscow mayoral bid.

To be able to communicate with people amid the total media crackdown, I started this channel.

It took me a number of attempts to finally get it going.

We were creating a political force.

True, it wasn’t officially registered because that was unreal, but it had all the makings of a political force like

proper organization, regional branches, legislative representation, and media resources.

Like-minded individuals learned how to run an election campaign, talk to people,

represent their interests, work in collegial bodies, and publicly debate various issues.

We realized full well we wouldn’t be able to create a large official liberal party under Putin’s rule of the 2010s and early 2020s.

But we wanted to get all set and done to have a functional, well-oiled structure once the opportunity arose.

In 2022, these activities became unfeasible in Russia.

We spent a lot of time and effort trying to set up the foundation for things to come right in the eye of a hurricane,

but when things went from bad to worse, we managed to ensure the safety of our people.

None of my team-members has faced criminal charges.

No one has been jailed. Almost all of the key individuals keep working for the channel.

And my strategic goal remains the same:

create a large liberal party in Russia that would be powerful enough to affect or even shape the Russian government policy.

I know it may all sound bizarre and incredible.

If I call it my goal, people may dismiss it as something unfeasible.

But okay, let’s call it a dream. Let’s talk about the country of our dreams.

Our country must be predicated on human rights, civil liberties, and people’s best interests.

An individual’s well-being, an opportunity to grow, do something they enjoy doing, lead a prosperous

and health life, get a decent education, and feel protected should be at the core of the Russian government policy.

Russia must be a peaceful country interacting with well-meaning governments for the sake of its interests.

The Russian government’s efforts must be focused on the improvement of its citizen’s life.

Russia must be able to ensure safe business opportunities.

Individuals must never be afraid of the law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

We must have the best healthcare and educational systems in the region

and be able to provide the best services so that this along with the common language we speak

can be leveraged to attract the most talented and prosperous individuals from neighboring countries.

Everyone in Russia must be able to feel safe and have a shot

at a prosperous life regardless of their gender, religious creed, skin color, origin, accent, language command, and sexual orientation.

Ours must be a country of ample opportunity where a law-abiding individual can feel at home

and do whatever they feel is the right thing for them to do.

This must be protected by an independent, fair, and robust judiciary.

Right now, these dreams may sound gullible, but these are all basic liberal values.

If we use this platform in our election campaign, most Russians will support it.

Those who share these gullible-sounding basic values and are ready to promote them should be able to join us in creating the party.

I’m certain that if it was to create such a party tomorrow,

my viewers alone would combine to make it the second most-populous party in Russia.

And that’s something we’re certainly going to do together.

Having a dream is a good thing, but I try to be reasonable and of practical mind.

I try to figure out what I can do right now to help fulfill these goals in the future.

The most essential thing for me is to keep this channel going.

This channel seeks to provide the Russian viewers with honest information,

but the main goal is to unite people around a certain approach to life and politics.

This approach is based on empathy as opposed to hatred, compassion as opposed to gloating,

and kindnes as opposed to malice.

While some colleagues of mine envision themselves as prosecutors, I’m leaning toward a defense attorney’s role.

I’m trying to see the best side even to sketchy individuals.

And by default, I have a positive attitude toward someone I don’t know.

We’d rather talk about admirable feats than about abject betrayal.

We’d rather highlight someone’s historical achievements than nitpick about their failures and wrongdoings.

Seeking solutions seems far more important than pointing fingers.

When this war started, our team agreed that we wouldn’t be sowing hatred.

And we’ve adhered to this approach ever since.

True, this approach may not have earned us the kind of popularity we’re looking for,

but our channel has been consistently drawing an audience of people who’d never start a war,

whether international or civil.

Granted, a popular opinion these days is that nothing is solvable without force.

But there should be an oasis of Russian-speaking individuals who don’t agree with it.

Let us fill this niche.

Our channel’s second goal is to gain popularity with the Russian audience by providing honest

and high-quality analysis while wishing the very best outcomes to our viewers.

That’s not part of a devious plan. I’d like the Russian people to fare well. I realize they’ve all landed in a very tough spot.

Clearly, that’s not the worst possible scenario of all time, and a lot of people are faring way worse.

But as a Russian politician, I mostly care about the Russians.

I can only do so much. We’ve launching a housing project for the war-affected Belgorod residents.

A couple dozen families have been able to relocate. Is that a lot?

Not really, but at least, that’s something.

What I can really do is, together with my team, provide you with even-keeled Russian-language commentary on a daily basis.

But we’ll also continue targeting the Russian elites.

As you may have noticed, I keep addressing them in a bid to explain certain things to them.

That’s for a reason.

If my information is correct, our channel is being actively watched by representatives of various Russian institutions.

Several times these guys met me when they came to Israel.

I asked them what motivated their interest.

They said it was hard to find any coherent analysis these days. Our channel, according to them, provides quite accurate analysis.

But we also add our own touch to it, as we aren’t run or manipulated by any stakeholders.

And that’s what people appreciate.

Besides, watching my channel, they don’t feel like I’m itching to have them all hanged.

It’s important to have an audience like this, too.

Perhaps our takes will result in some of them stepping down or doing the right thing once change is possible.

This channel is being watched by a lot of people.

Some of our viewers may then join me in creating a liberal party.

Others won’t. Some may then switch to their own life, but will eventually vote for us.

Or maybe they won’t. Right now, it’s not that important.

What is important, though, is for us to keep producing high-quality content and bear in mind

that it should all translate into a influential political force in Russia once this window of opportunity cracks open.

True, we won’t rise to power through force and violence.

Liberal audiences aren’t in the habit of fomenting mutinies, while liberal politicians never urge them to do so.

At least, I won’t.

As long as the window of opportunity for our political activity is shut, we’ll be helping others,

those who are brave enough to try and do something in Russia, even if their worldview is slightly different from ours.

I’m willing to help if these people oppose the war, even from the safety of their closets.

We’ll keep supporting such politicians without asking for their permission to do so.

We won’t demand that they make unambiguous statements, throwing them under the bus.

We’ll just be picking those we want to endorse, and we’ll be supporting them.

We did a pretty god job helping Nadezhdin gather the endorsement signatures.

We’ve shown there are a lot of Russians with an anti-war stance who aren’t afraid of turning up.

We’ll keep trying as long as these opportunities arise.

Whatever media resources I have will be used to back this kind of domestic activity in Russia.

Besides, we must do our utmost to help those who are being persecuted in Russia,

the ones Putin’s regime is trying to crush, scaremonger, impoverish, and strip of their audiences.

We’ll be supporting any anti-war causes, like the wives of the mobilized recruits.

We’ll be supporting any other media and not-for-profit projects, both Russian and international.

We’ll keep raising the audience’s awareness of those.

For all my scarce capabilities, I’ll be trying to communicate with European politicians to help the Russians

who left the country or are about to leave.

I’ll be helping and urging others to help the Russian musicians, actors,

and other cultural figures who got canceled in Russia.

We’ll do everything we can to help the political prisoners,

even if it just means raising some money for them.

That’s about everything we can do right now, given the resources we can afford.

There’ll only be peace and prosperity in our region when Russia becomes a democratic country steeped in the liberal ideology.

There’s no other way for Europe to enjoy sustainable peace.

In Russia, no one will have a peaceful and safe life as long as the government is seized

by those who see the war as the ultimate goal in and of itself.

What’s the efficient way of affecting Russia’s future?

After all, monarchies, military juntas, and totalitarian regimes aren’t all the rage these days.

Problems tend to be solved politically.

If there were any grave errors committed in the 1990s,

it was that the liberal politicians of the era didn’t even attempt to create an active nationwide liberal party.

I’m not blaming anyone here. There were various obstacles.

The exhaustive reformation got in the way of anything else, including the real party politics.

But the fact is, that epoch failed to produce a large liberal party, even though liberalism didn’t have any derogatory connotations at the time.

It even looked promising.

The two political parties that emerged, The Union of Right Forces and Yabloko, were quite small

and failed to get into the parliament following the 2003 election.

After that, they exercised no significant influence over the Russian public.

Without a well-organized political force, it doesn’t matter if 70% of the citizens are liberal-leaning.

You’ll never succeed.

As a result, your top executives and officials are going to stand for some very different values or no values at all.

In both cases, it makes the power so much easier to usurp.

That’s the takeaway and the lesson I’d like to learn so that next time an opportunity arise, we won’t blow it.

I don’t want to run for president. I’m not a good fit for the job.

But something I hope I can do is build a functional, well-organized, and sprawling politicial party rooted in liberal values.
