Transcripts
Hello! Welcome back to EXPLORING THE KINGDOM, day two.
How can we see the glory of Christ through music?
Let’s watch the video!
Bekh! Bekher!
Hey, Bekh!
What song are you listening to?
Oh, I’m listening to New Jeans!
Never heard of it, what’s that?
You know, New Jeans..with the really popular song! You can listen to it played everywehere, in malls and wherever! How come you don’t know?
Well..I never heard of them actually, Bekh.
What kind of music do you listen to anyway?
Well, recently i jave been listening to classical music.
Isn’t that for old people?
You just don’t know, Bekh!
If you listen to classical music, you will feel beauty that you won’t encounter from pop songs!
Really?
Have you heard of Haydn?
Who’s he?
Come give your phone? I’ll refer you one of his songs for you to listen.
Okay wait, let me open it first.
Okay, here!
Joseph Haydn.
Okay, put on your headphones!
Franz Joseph Haydn was born in 31 March 1732.
In western Austria in a village called Rohrau.
Haydn did not come from a family of professional musicians, but his parents liked to play music.
His father studied playing the harp on his own.
Haydn grew up listening to folk songs and seeing the dance of the farmers.
However, his musical interest and talents were noted by people even when Haydn was still young.
Because of his prominent musical talent, Haydn drew the attention of Johann Franck, the music teacher.
He was sent to a music school directed by Franck when he was six.
There, Haydn learned music theory, vocals, and play various instruments.
But, life there was also harsh.
He was often hungry, his clothes were dirty, and he was humiliated by others because of his appearance.
However, Franz Joseph Haydn always had a positive outlook on all things.
Haydn said that looking back, he felt grateful for the musical education he received though his family was poor.
This positive outlook of Haydn pushed him to work hard.
In his life, he composed 473 works,
including 108 symphonies, 47 sonatas, 20 operas, and 68 quartets for violins.
You can even say that Haydn was a musical workaholic!
He lived until 77 years old and all his life, producing beautiful music became his only motivation in life.
The musicians who worked under him called him ‘Papa Haydn’ because of his gentle temperament and caring nature.
Haydn’s works continues to be regarded as works that bring vigor, optimism, and originality.
His works even inspired and became model for his students, who would eventually become more famous than him, like Mozart and Beethoven.
One of Haydn’s well-known works is ‘The Creation’, which tells the story of creation from the Bible, not only through words but also through music.
This oratorio begins with orchestral music that depicts chaos before God established order through his word,
which is then followed by a solo and a chorus that narrate the six days creation.
The solo section is sung by 3 soloists playing the role of 3 angels: Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael.
These three angels were witnesses to the might and glory of God who created the world so beautifully.
The choir plays the role of the rest of heavenly hosts who sing praises to God in the first and second section of the work.
The third section narrates the creation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
In this part, we hear a bassist playing the role of Adam and a soprano playing the role of Eve.
Adam and Eve sings praises of the beauty of God’s creation and also the beauty of one another, joined by angelic praises.
Though at the end, Haydn also slipped in a part that foreshadows the fall into sin that awaits them, sung by angel Uriel.
“O happy pair, and always happy yet, unless, by false conceit misled ye strive for more than granted is, and more would know, than know ye should!”
However, in accordance with Haydn’s outlook towards life, he never allowed sorrow to be the last word.
Haydn closed the oratorio with magnificent and beautiful praises, exclaiming gratitude to the glory of God.
Well, what do you think Bekh?
Wow interesting! What you have told me is difficult to be expressed through pop music.
Because the nature of pop music itself is simple and light, it is hard to carry deep and transcendent messages.
Can we still listen to pop music then?
Hmm.. I think it’s not about whether we can or not Bekh, but the thing is human beings were created to be satisfied with God’s presence.
And pop music cannot bring us to feel God’s presence as much as classical music.
By the way, why did you call me earlier?
Oh right! It was about your laundry on the clothesline!
It’s drenched by the rain!
Eh! Why didn’t you tell me earlier!
Bekher, Bekher..
We have just learned about music.
Please remember it, friends, because after this, you will be answering questions from the station master
and compile your answers to get the stickers.
See you in the next video!
