Transcripts
welcome back to the last module of ai for everyone
this could be a particular controversial module it does not help that the media have instilled a lot
of fear about ai into many people we have shown how powerful and useful ai can be especially in
the area of recognizing images understanding natural language and speech recognition
what does it mean then for people like you and me will ai replace me in the future what can i do to
remain relevant i hope by now you appreciate how ai works and knowing that ai is really just mass
it is however very narrow in terms of the tasks that it can do very well ai will not
be displacing us humans for a very long time in this section we'll discuss how ai will impact you
we'll talk about how to go about learning ai and if you should learn
python programming and lastly how to determine how ai ready is your organization
in 2018 a group of top lawyers competed with an ai program to scan a non-disclosure agreement or nda
for issues the ai program completed the analysis in 26 seconds compared to the 92 minutes the
lawyers took on average this is 200 times faster than a human lawyer however none of the lawyers
were scared of the ai their responses were allow them to focus on more complex projects
freed up their time to spend with their customers and one very sharp lawyer commented that in the
future it would be lawyer plus ai versus lawyer plus ai and if you are not using ai you will lose
it is important to remember that ai is a tool to automate tasks the simpler a task is to automate
the more likely that it will be done by a robot or a computer remember back to the very first module
when we spoke about email spam the ai powered spam engine have automated the task of spam detection
and given you back the 5 10 20 minutes of your life so that you can do more productive work
and with the mundane and boring tasks automated away
you can spend more time on productive or new tasks
well hopefully the boss will get new tasks otherwise he may be the one automated away
okay this slide is about the 4d and for singaporeans no it is not that 4d
i'm not going to show you a ai system to predict this weekend's 4d number what are
some of the tasks which we want to automate away whether with simple robots or smart ai robots
yes tasks that are dirty difficult dangerous and demeaning
for every chart or report you read that claims x millions jobs will be lost to ai
you can find another report which says ai will create one million jobs so who is right
well actually both as tasks and jobs disappear new jobs and tasks will be created
to replace it there are jobs not yet invented and tasks not yet defined
who would have thought that today you can be a youtube millionaire no real
job in the traditional sense but you can make a decent living by recommending products online
one of the popular questions we get asked
so if i want to start doing ai do i need to learn python programming
no you do not yes you heard me right you do not in fact you can do very advanced data analysis
and even basic to advanced image or text analysis with zero coding
there are many gui based tools which allows you to analyze your data with no coding what you need
to focus on instead is data you need to have good clean data two you need to understand your domain
and three you need to go and read up on your maths and stats and understand algorithms what they
expect as inputs and what the outputs mean and then you can use a drag and drop tool to do the
ai the screenshots you see here is from the orange data mining tool a free and open source toolkit
which is very powerful and complete as a toolkit for someone who just want to analyze data
with powerful machine learning algorithms without programming
so you may be asking why are we discouraging you from learning python programming to do ai
a few years ago data scientist was considered the new sex symbol and everyone wanted to become one
today everyone wants to become an ai engineer i like this statement from chuck russell
the eight-week course you took on coursera or the data science bootcamp you attended
no more makes you a data scientist than my recent golf lessons make me a golf pro
i believe in life-long learning i'm all for self-improvement but this is self-delusion
let me explain the realities if you are pre-med in your late 30s and 40s and want to jump into the ai
bandwagon and think that you can go do a bootcamp for eight weeks and learn python programming
and ai and then find a job as a data scientist or ai engineer then you are misinformed i'm not
saying you cannot you can if you are already doing data analysis in a tool like orange or spss or sas
and you need to learn python to extend your skills or if you're a software developer sure go ahead
or if you are super super passionate and self-directed it is possible
we'll show you an example later but if you have never done programming before
and have no training in a hard science or is not comfortable with maths and stats
but hope to become a data scientist with this python and data scientist bootcamp
and then land a job it is not realistic recall we want you to be savvy consumers of ai tools
so instead of learning python which will not help you at all in your job learn to use a higher level
tool to do your existing job better and smarter if you are marketing executive have you looked
at google analytics or tools like mailchimp which allow you to do a b testing to better analyze and
understand how your customers are interacting with you so that you can send targeted adverts to them
you do not need programming here or if you are a copywriter have you used tools like grammarly
to reduce errors and write better or one of those article generation tools to help you
generate slightly different articles faster ai companies have created many of such tools
for non-programmers to use and consume the ai models without programming often you may not even
know that there is ai at work but if you die want to learn python and ai because you are interested
sure it can be done it won't be easy let's watch this video what does my future look like
i always imagine retiring and traveling around the world that's what i would say if you asked me in
the past now i'm an ai consultant i help companies make use of this new technology to improve their
business performance and you know many companies they want to use ai but they don't know how
so i give them advice and help them explore opportunities customers have problems to solve
and we have solutions for them but of course it is not as simple my name is kevin and as you can see
i'm not very young and my colleagues are not very old but if you think about it we are the same we
write code we wear t-shirts and jeans to work and we drink bubble tea except maybe for the wrinkles
i spent more than 25 years in sales and marketing and it was very comfortable
things like checking code i wouldn't know how to do this is where i had my first technical
interview in the past i was the one interviewing people but now i was the one being interviewed
it was totally out of my comfort zone during my time we usually have just one professional skill
and that will see us through our entire career but now i have to learn technical skills like python
r revise my math and many other things i think passion is the most important thing in
learning new skills let me show you where we come up with all the good ideas
actually my ex-colleague asked me aren't you afraid of going back to school
well this is nothing like school the program under the tesla initiative gave us customers and
real-life problems to solve and there were great mentors and colleagues to work with
we were also given a stipend and that financial support allow us to focus on our training
so you ask me what my future looks like there's so many possibilities
but i know it will be exciting and bright and i'm just getting started
the key here is that i did not hire kevin for his ai programming skills
instead i hired kevin because of his domain expertise in sales and marketing
and now with the added knowledge of knowing how ai works he can better engage the organizations
especially smes here in singapore to guide them in their ai adoption journey
so if you want to learn some python programming and the basics of ai sure you can but do not
hope to land a job as an ai engineer instead you should focus on your current domain the skills you
have and add on the new knowledge of ai and how it can help you to do your current work better
often you do not need to learn to program in python at all so it is what i call plus scaling
it is about acquiring the basic knowledge in ai to become a better accountant a marketer a lawyer
an engineer and to be able to leverage the ai tools that is available for the accountant the
marketer the lawyer and the engineer but what if you want to convert and become an ai engineer
yes it is entirely possible but it is up to you to put in the hard work to learn what it takes
kevin did not mention it in his video but he spent three years studying his son's university maths
and stats textbook 3 years learning from various online resources to be able to get to a sufficient
technical level to join the ai singapore's ai apprenticeship program graduates of the ai
apprenticeship program often get hired into data science and ai roles as engineers and scientists
well for those who are watching this you already know about ai singapore's learn ai portal
feel free to explore the other courses here and if you want to start learning python programming
and programming basic ai system again please be reminded not necessary to become an ai engineer
but so that you get a good understanding of how ai system works and you won't have wood pulled
over your eyes by some ai vendor you can sign up to ai for industry a 140 hours course which
covers the basics of machine learning and data science in ai singapore will continue to add
new content to learn ai but my team will focus on sharing real-world ai projects we have done
so you learn the real-world problems and issues faced we will also share the use of our pre-built
ai solutions the ai breaks so that you can make use of them in your projects if suitable besides
ai singapore there are many other good resources online such as intel ai academy google ai
microsoft ai school coursera udacity and so on but ai singapore's learn ai is a good place to start
we have covered how ai will impact you as an individual what about the organization you
work for here in ai singapore we have worked on ai projects with many government agencies
mncs large enterprises smes and startups and we hear the same questions over and over again
how do i know whether my organization is ready for ai what are the factors i should consider
before embarking on ai projects how can i ensure we have the right data for our ai use cases do
my employees need to know ai before using it what are the things i should do to become more ai ready
in air singapore we have created the ai readiness index or airy for short it is a 15 minutes
mcq self-assessment you can take to determine how ready your department or company is for ai
we evaluate your company along the following metrics
does your organizations have employees who are ai literate not necessarily ai developers but
employees who understand what is ai and how it works for example someone who has
attended a course like ai for everyone does the organization have management support to do ai
are there real-world business use cases with qualified roi for the ai projects you want to do
does the organization have good and ready data that ai can use
and lastly does the organization have the it infrastructure to support ai in airy we categorize
organizations into four types the ai unaware organizations who are unaware of ai in general
and wait for vendors to recommend ai solutions to them ai aware organizations who are savvy
consumers of ai and actively seek out digital and off-the-shelf ai solutions for their own use
ai ready digitally ready organizations who may have a digital platform for their business and
data is in a format where an ai model can be built by solution providers or by in-house it teams
using pre-built pre-trained ai models or ai apis from cloud providers and finally ai competent
these are organizations that typically have ai and data scientists in r d teams who can build ai
models from the ground up now it is important to note that we do not want all organizations to go
from ai unaware and become ai competent or even ai ready it is not practical and does not make sense
what we would like to see is for organizations to go from ai unaware to ai aware
and if you are only a consumer of ai solutions and stay in ai aware that is perfectly fine
for example my favorite local coffee joint jacun i do not want them to become ai competent and have
a team of ai engineers who do develop their own ai models how will it help them in their business
it does not make sense instead i hope they will become ai aware and be savvy consumers of ai
applications on the clock for example and use ai powered tools to help them increase their sales
for example a smarter loyalty program please visit the aerie website to learn more
and to do the self-assessment we have now come to the last module of ai for everyone over the
last five modules we have discussed what is ai how ai works ai is not magic it is just maths
what can ai do responsible use of ai and finally ai jobs and you we share that ai is here to stay
and it will automate away tasks give you bad time and help you to do more important things
it will also create new jobs some of these jobs will require deep skills in ai however many
will only require that you know what is ai and how to use ai and data effectively in your job
without the need to do programming not everyone needs to learn python programming to write the
ai wave understanding how to use ai understanding how to get clean quality data and understanding
your domain is more important than learning to program in python especially for the pmats ai
singapore's learn ai is a good place to start your ai learning journey but we also encourage you to
explore other online course providers or sign up to one of our local polytechnics or universities
that have continuing education training classes in ai and data science to improve yourself
as an organization ai singapore's ai readiness index or arie can be used to quickly in 15 minutes
to help your organization understand where it is in terms of its ai maturity
we want our organization to move from ai unaware to ai aware i hope you have enjoyed
this course and have a better appreciation of what ai is please do share this course with
your friends colleagues and family members to help them learn and appreciate ai oh
one last slide managers will be replaced by ai you can replace managers here with lawyers doctors
accountants engineers the statement may be scary and the main and the media would want you to think
so fortunately it is not exactly true managers will be replaced by managers who uses ai thank you
