thanks sming in the
backy okay so there's this YouTuber
named carollyn conar and she made a
video 3 weeks ago saying I have an
announcement now if you don't know who
this person is they got popular posting
sketch videos where they do like these'
7s retro Style music videos about random
quirky topics like the STD song the
depression song how to be a feminist
mother stripper magician and you know
some of these videos were funny they're
kind of ironic whatever they've got
their own aesthetic their artsy fartsy
it's gathered her a pretty big audience
of a million subscribers on YouTube
while she'd been absent from her channel
for about a year returned with a video
like I mentioned called I have an
announcement 3 weeks ago where she
announced to her audience who hadn't
seen her in a year that she was pregnant
and she was in her third trimester I'm
currently in my second trimester and let
me tell you something being pregnant is
exactly what they say it is it's pretty
awful it's very overwhelming to be 20
and Pregnant cuz I'm around other
20-year-olds that are like I don't even
know what I'm like doing right now like
I don't even know who I am or what I
want in life and I'm just like that
sounds tough this was a 5-minute video
that garnered 600,000 views a lot of
people felt like the video was super
authentic real raw and connected with
them on a pretty deep level I mean read
some of the comments on this video there
there people like kind of almost crying
in the form of text saying how much
Caroline's videos have been like nice
for them during rough times and how
everything's going to be okay mother
giving out free therapy in the YouTube
comment section I mean it's crazy and
these people are so well-meaning and
genuine but the person who made the
video Caroline as we'll see is uh not
because N9 days ago she made a video
called I lost the baby a nearly 4-minute
video where she basically spits in the
face of her audience and then slaps them
across the face saying [ __ ] you idiots I
was never pregnant that was a big prank
just to push traffic to my Pat on
account and make some more money a lot
of people have been making comments
saying that what she did was super
offensive faking a miscarriage is not
okay you know people have lost their
children and babies and for you to just
lie about something like that and joke
about it is just unacceptable and it's
super offensive and if that's how you
feel fair enough I'm not going to
challenge you on that especially if
that's something you've experienced but
in my opinion I think one of the
shadiest parts about this is the fact
that the reason she did it wasn't just
to be a prank or wasn't something of
Good Intentions that you could give her
the benefit of the doubt for it was
literally because she was absent from
making content for a year probably was
running low on cash because she just
wasn't making videos comes back with
this pregnancy announcement gets her big
views and this was all a [ __ ] cash
grab for her patreon it's one thing to
make a prank about a sensitive topic
involving death or something like that
which I'm not even saying I would fully
support I think that there's still like
a lot of reasons why that's not okay
because even if you say like oh I lost
my friend in a car crash and it's a
prank well you're still going to get a
lot of views on that video because
people are sympathetic and they want to
be nice to you but specifically in this
situation the fact that she did this to
just drive traffic to her [ __ ]
patreon to get money from well-meaning
people it's just so scummy but yeah
let's talk about it all right so we're
going to take a look at her video called
I lost the baby where she explains how
she was never pregnant and in the title
itself she's implying that she had a
miscarriage right because if she does a
video titled I'm pregnant and the next
video is I lost the baby what do you
imply in your audience that the baby
died right I mean that's the implication
so they're going to click on it and
they're going to be like what the hell
happened they're going to watch it and
all for you to say yeah I was never
pregnant get [ __ ] trolled
[Music]
okay guys I lost the baby and I don't
know exactly where I put it it it has to
be around here somewhere okay so some of
you guys are probably
wondering no I am not pregnant and I'm
sure some of you are shocked I'm sure
some of you are not surprised at all I'm
sure some of you don't care but some of
you might be
asking when you're a content creator the
line between entertainment and reality
is very blurred your audience will
become very attached to an abstraction
of yourself and the odd thing is that
this connection can become very
personally meaningful to the
viewers what all right so before she
goes on a rant about why parasocial
relationships are bad and why audiences
shouldn't idealize any content creators
I don't think that has anything to do
with you being a piece of [ __ ] for
pedaling a patreon off the backs of a
fake Narrative of you having a
miscarriage audience es do connect with
an abstraction right like if something
doesn't exist they can still get
connected to it like if you're playing a
character and they relate to the
character that could cause problems like
if you no longer want to play that
character and just be yourself people
might stop watching but I think you're
going to have a very hard time
convincing people that that has anything
to do with the fact that you literally
used a fake pregnancy to practically
ebeg while it's not being personally
meaningful to the Creator itself your
attention is monetarily valuable to me
and unless you have some narcissistic
Tendencies which a lot of us do the
experience of having a parasocial
relationship with your audience can be
very uncomfortable I'll give you an
example when I was 15 and I first
started making content I had a lot of
people threatened every day and if you
could imagine this was not fun and the
problem with this beyond the obvious is
that there's no meaningful way to
respond to this interaction the offender
has anonymity and in some way so do I
holy ausc take it to a publisher dude if
I wanted an anime backstory I'd watch
Naruto I'm not here to hear your
upbringing and how you know you started
to be a content creator and how it was
hard at the beginning but then you
became more used to it this has
literally nothing to do with what we're
talking about this is unnecessary filler
to divert attention away from what we're
actually supposed to be talking about
the title cart that she used going into
this segment was quote why would you lie
about the pregnancy and she's talking
about how like parasocial relationships
are bad and the content creator audience
relationship has a lot of inherent flaws
here I'll give you one inherent flaw the
fact that you felt so comfortable
literally pedling a patreon to
well-meaning viewers who wanted to help
someone who got pregnant young I'm not
treating them like a real person they're
not treating me like a real person
you're not real and I'm not real and
none of this is real oh my god dude like
the Reddit tier nihilism like oh what I
say has no impact what I say doesn't
matter what you say doesn't matter this
is all digital metaverse it's always the
people who drastically screw up who does
to bring up questions like man what does
it all matter for why are we even here
what's the meaning of life of course
Very fundamental questions like these
only get asks after Tides turn against
you effect that we have on each other is
still very real I come on the I come
nope I am hold on I will present myself
on the internet because I want to
desperately be seen and to connect to
other people and a lot of you come on
the internet no a lot of you will engage
on the internet because
you want to be seen and because you
desperately want to connect to someone I
lied about being pregnant as a joke and
the joke is not that pregnancy under
strenuous circumstances is funny the
joke is not that the audience was
gullible enough to believe that I was
pregnant the joke is you connected to
something that wasn't real okay great
not only is that not funny and it's not
not funny because it's offensive or
something like that it just was a [ __ ]
executed joke I feel like the more
controversial a joke is by nature the
more you have to make sure it's actually
funny or else it just seems like the
risk reward on that is horrible but
forget that for a second the actual
manifestation of people connecting with
something that wasn't real was real you
did really get money from patreon it's
not that the joke fell flat to a crowd
of sighing audiences and people on their
phones that would be fine that would
have just been offensive and I guess
that's like whatever but you ultimately
literally monetarily benefited off of
this lie like a manipulative lie so if
you want take the L for making a bad
joke that's fine but you should also do
something right and actually refund
people their money here and I have
become something that isn't real we all
come here to find this connection over
and over again and we don't really find
it until now when you subscribe to my
patreon oh yeah that's [ __ ] right
this entire stunt has been an advertis
ment for my patreon yeah we know that's
why in every other conceivable timeline
where you didn't get lucky off of
YouTube you'd have my number one
Chick-fil-A meal ready I want waffle
fries and a Dr Pepper dude like this is
just such broke Behavior oh my God just
it's kind of just cringy for that reason
alone I mean the whole like Brokey
aesthetic is just disgusting to me oh
please do my patreon like oh begging
with your hands out dude doesn't make
content for an entire year runs out of
money because she's just bad with
finances and then comes back to YouTube
with this stupid stunt to promote her
patreon you should be at a call center
right now like spam my phone telling me
that there's like student loan
forgiveness that you can get me in on
and like in order to get it I have to
give you my card details I'm also
announcing that I'm coming back to
YouTube listen I wanted to come back to
YouTube and explain to everyone why I
had been gone and what had happened to
me in that time that made me want to
come back some of you in my audience are
pretty weird and I don't blame any of
you you know you can't help being weird
but I didn't think that it would be
healthy for me to expose myself like
that to all of you and that's why I
decided to keep a lot of my more
sensitive information behind the pay
wall where I would hope some of the
audience would be more intentional with
how they interact with me because now it
costs money to do so guys I'm back I'm
back and I'm back to making YouTube
content yeah so in conclusion this was
pretty shitty she is kind of bad
she got
