it's a pleasure and honor to address
such a distinguished group at in kai
today
to talk about the future of agribusiness
and the important role that each of you
play in it
never in the history of our organization
nor in the history of the food system
have we had such a tragic time
to discuss
the role that i farmer must play
we are in the middle of some wonderful
revolutions in terms of technology
we're learning how to produce food that
is more nutritious
more helpful to the
environment
and we're able to do it in a way that
uses our human resources of men and
women
in a far better way than we've ever used
them before
unfortunately
we are living in a very tragic time
we are living in a world
where cooperation and collaboration is
disappearing
in the food system and in agribusiness
and in this organization
we exist
in just the opposite
we're here
to find a way of working with the
private public not-for-profit
and governmental sectors of the global
food system
in a way that
everybody
is in a win-win relationship
in order to do that
we have to take advantage of
every new technology
every new
way of coordinating and collaborating
and every way of
finding
new avenues of how food can be used
not only
as a
nutrition for the world
but as a positive force in improving the
climate of the world
so what can i farmer do that it hasn't
done
i think
that we have to be even more inclusive
than we've ever been before
we have to open up our membership
to many more
different kinds
of technology
that are appearing on the scene
we have to realize
that the food system
is now not only important in health but
essential to health
it's not only important
to the environment but it's essential if
we're going to have a climate that will
let our planet exist in the future
we are at a time
when the education
of our men and women
requires a multi-discipline
approach to that education
we have to realize that in our
universities
we have to have
not just
agribusiness
but we need public policy
we need public health
we certainly need the government
involved as well
we have
an even greater task behind that
this industry
has found a way
that makes each part of the system
better
through collaboration
we live in a world
that's very divisive
where we have oligarchy people
trying to
take away our freedoms
we need
to be more proactive
in making sure the food system
remains free
we have to
be more proactive
in making certain
that the collaborations we have are fair
to everyone
we have to be more active in making sure
that women play a more important role
in that food system
we have to make certain
that in our education
that we do not look at agribusiness in
isolation
but as part of a much broader
university and public relationship than
we've ever had before
finally
we have to do one more thing
the young people of our world
are our future
and agribusiness
has the opportunity
to give these younger people
a much bigger voice than they've ever
had before
we have a way of using our youth
immediately in our food system they
don't have to wait till they're much
older to do things in the food system
we have to do a better job of making
sure that we collaborate with other
disciplines in our university
that we
make sure that our students have the
opportunity
to major in several disciplines because
our problems are multi-discipline in
nature
i've had the pleasure and privilege of
being an advisor
to this institution
for a long time
my
wonderful colleague jim austin came here
to help establish an agribusiness
program and did his doctoral thesis on
wheat while he was in in kai
in kai represents
the best of what
agribusiness can do
and it shines as an example
of the kind of institutions we have to
create around the world
if we're going to have
a world that survives
the
fighting
and invasion
[Music]
of
people
who want to be in office forever
we have to find a way
that
agribusiness
not only
makes the food system more effective and
more cooperative
but does so for the world as well
that's a big task for this organization
but it's one that suits it better than
any other organization i know
i want to congratulate the people who
are here many of them have been my
students have been my doctoral students
my mba students
but in reality have been my long-term
friends
thank you for the support you've given
agribusiness for the leadership you've
given agribusiness
and
i wish you well in the future and i
realize
that i'm saying these words at a time
when everything we stand for is attacked
i have faith in you
and the world's counting on you and i
hope these few words make sense to you
thank you for the opportunity to talk to
you today
