DRUMMOND: Thinking of more family interventions...
the pandemic, in particular, has caused a
tremendous rise in the utilization of Instagram.
It's been the most popular social media
among adolescents currently, followed closely by TikTok.
The content there is all over the place.
It can be very toxic from a bullying
perspective or from a self image perspective.
I think it's important to try to monitor your loved
ones utilization and how social media is affecting them.
That's not easy to do.
That's a tall order.
There's a lot of positive aspects of communication and
self worth on TikTok and Instagram, for example.
But there's also a lot of toxicity.
Do you have any feelings about that?
FLATT: You know, so social media can be a very positive
thing if used that way, and that's why
we've got to get more people utilizing it.
However, that being said, the cyberbullying has
been shown that it's more destructive on
an individual than in-person bullying.
So, cyberbullying, and also, when I was in
school, if you wanted to bully me, Dr. Drummond,
you had to do it from 8:00 to 3:30 because
after that, I was away from the school ground.
You couldn't get to me.
Today, it's cyberbullying 24/7, and it
can be people who don't even know you
get involved into it. Very destructive.
It's important that you, not monitor
or stay on top or snoop,
but you know what's going on in
the social media for your young people.
They could be under tremendous pressure
and you not know about it.
DRUMMOND: So, there's a certain amount of self education
on what's out there, how it's being consumed
and getting comfortable talking to your kids about
it and getting them comfortable talking to you
about it in a nonjudgmental way.
Like, "This is a lot of information,
and how does that affect you?"
"What do you like looking at on Instagram?"
"Who do you follow?"
It's that way of making a comfortable introduction,
in a way that's not so threatening, not
judgmental, and not, just taking one step back.
So, it is hard to talk about, but it's worth it.
If you or someone you know is considering suicide, dial 988 or go to the nearest emergency room.
