hello friends of the cultivated charging fun and welcome to speicher electrified
your channel for electromobility from the heart of the alps. my name is matthias
and we are here in the skoda production facility in mlada boleslav. we are
in front of the component production because we are looking at battery
production for the MEB platform today and walk through the entire production hall.
So you can experience a journey together with me from start to finish let's go
we are in the component factory for the MEB platform and there is one platform hanging around where you can
just see it completely. With me are three people from Škoda. And since you all want to see numbers
they are there on the board. when the plant is running at 100% and all parts are there - and we know
that not all parts are available at the moment no car manufacturer is doing better - then this can roll off the assembly line-
here battery production starts. here are the carriers with the battery systems (modules), which are
then loaded here onto the appropriate ones lines. then move over there and from here they go on
the journey to production, which we will now follow step by step. these are my three companions,
by the way, the press spokesman (Stepan Rehak) and two here from production management. for us it's going up now because
we can see the whole production so we follow the conveyors. Of course I don't know what will be left at the end of the final video.
parts will certainly be cut out for getting approval but let's wait and see.
then the modules go on here. there in front you can see a whole row of modules
on the conveyor belts and we continue to follow the path of the battery. by the way, almost 350 people work in the hall
here, 100 of them are in the MEB battery production.
that’s where the batteries come from and now they go
down with those three lifts with the red plastic stripes there, so that they can then be processed further automatically.
The empty Battery Module cases come from over there, we look at them later again.
They then move into the first machine. in this first machine, the so-called gapfiller is
pressed. gapfiller, you can see here, you can imagine it like on your computer
between the processor and the ventilation. it is like a thermal fluid that coats each module
again from below for perfect heat transfer. the module is pressed in and then are
at least 95 percent of the surface covered. back there you can also see examples and this means that the
heat from the modules gets into the cooling layer down here. Let's look at the machine who does this.
the delivered empty battery boxes that come from the back and this machine here, there are
three in this row and three more there in the back, in each machine
this thermal fluid is applied by these robots and then two others back there press two of
these modules in and so this line is all the way down there. If you ask yourself
why this production line is not running. here you can see it in there: it is a so-called
maintenance shift, i.e. a maintenance shift where the system is being overhauled and improved. that’s why it’s not running right now.
but this line produces a complete ENYAQ battery every 66 seconds and can make 1020
batteries per day. just not right now. But maintenance shift is
good because that way we can see a lot more at the individual stations because nothing
is moving. we are standing here at a manual workstation. the modules are now screwed into the case. there you can see
the screw results and did you know they keep all data of all screwing for 15 years,
of each individual screw and the process to be able to prove that everything was right here in production,
we continue to follow the path of the battery. you
can see here a battery with thermal fluid and screws tightened. and this battery moves to
further steps through this system. the batteries then transported to stations 250 there in the back, this
is a test station, there is a check that there is no potential from any built-in battery
i.e. from a module on the case because that would be dangerous for the employees who are then,
here in the manual workstation, working on the battery. this is the station where
the brain - you may remember the boxes...from right here the brain of your
battery is being built from left to right. over there the finished units come out which are
then standing here. this is how they look like. touching them is definitive not a good idea. there these three
parts, this is the brain of our battery. far right the controller and then the plus and minus
side. They call it "E-Box", this part ensures that our battery works properly.
Inside this unit is also the explosive cartridge which cuts the high voltages circuit in case of an accident.
That's what they do here on this line. Here the E-Boxes are built into the battery. The Plus Box,
the minus box and the actual brain are screwed together there. the battery moves
further in here, here the outgoing high-voltage connection is attached,
it looks like this and this is what happens in this machine, so that at the end we have this
box here. This goes to the next workplace where everything
is now laid in the middle of this case. and here almost everything that is
necessary to connect the high-voltage battery has already been built in. at the station here now only the last screws are mounted.
So that the modules are now able to deliver power to the outside of the case.
Here more cables are connected, by the way this is the air equalization valve for
the housing e.g. that we don’t get different pressure levels when driving uphill.
the finished result then looks like this. you can see here. These are two manual workstations where
it's done. isn't this incredibly fascinating how a battery here is built piece by piece?
from there the batteries then move on. here you can see how
attention is paid to ergonomics. the battery is rotated so that the employee who then
takes the cable from here simply works directly on the battery. I have right here such a cable and you can see the QR code
here and there is the scanner for it. everything is scanned here and stored in the digital file
of your vehicle. skoda really knows every single component by name
that is installed in your ENYAQ battery. nothing is unknown to them so they can trace everything back to the origin
where it came from. That's very important if problems should arise. here is the battery
test station and you can say the battery is brought to life here. it comes from where
we were before and is thoroughly tested. Every battery that
moves on from here is definitely 100 percent tested and ok, because we're not talking about
something like a small cell that you have at home in a flashlight. that battery here is
dangerous to harm life. if it is not 100 percent safe then it must not be installed.
So a tested battery is now sent to the next three robots and they are now applying two rows
of sealant to the box and then the lid is put on top and that's not
the only seal there. of course also a rubber seal is installed. it's like the high voltage connector
of the battery, just twice the safety. you see the high-voltage battery is
not only built absolutely safe and checked. in every little thing there is a consideration to do it.
we are here at the end of the screwing process but because a
screwing is taking place here despite maintenance i start backwards, I show you the beginning
of the screwing also a bit later. here is now the cover of the battery case is screwed on the edges.
It's a special method because below in the case are no threads on the frame
or better not yet because this robot and you can see that now... the screw is applied.
It rotates the screw at 5000 turns a minute so the aluminum gets hot, the screw makes
its own thread and then he pulls it along with very casually eight newton meters and then there is
a thread at the bottom, it needs about a second or something for such a connection,
incredibly fascinating to see, that is the last screwing process on the battery so we're
going to start with the screwing now so that you can see how the other screws
are mounted, because once all around there is - by the way much more of the systems around here -
of course more that is screwed. actually the screw connection starts here at the front.
The batteries are coming from behind there an here the lid is put on the case.
that is the robot in the back who stands so high. then the screws are inserted here
first the ones in the middle. the four you see here. these thick ones, with which the battery is also
attached to the body of the car afterwards. on the belt where the battery now moves in,
the side screws for the individual modules are then attached here and then comes what we
saw first, the screw connection here on the outside, and that means the battery is already closed on one side,
but we know the battery has two sides, there is another lid underneath and that’s where we’re going
now. I show you again the screw connection. There in the back were the machines
that screwed the frame. then the batteries come here, they are turned upside down here.
there you can see the cooling system lying on top and here in this station this sheet metal is now being built on top of
it. this is the lower sheet metal of the battery. you don’t see that under your
ENYAQ because there is also a plastic protection on it. but here you can have a
look at the cooling fins in the cooling system and how the lower cover is placed on the battery case.
so there you can see is the underrun protection or the lower cover, as I would say, on it, which is
also already fixed, but of course that's not enough. It is attached here again with the same
technology as the upper cover and then it holds really from safe. but it is
reversible. you can still open it.
maybe it’s completely normal for one or the other technology expert from you that something like that does
work. for me at least not and I find it quite fascinating to find out what can be done in
production technology. here we can take a closer look at this
demonstration object. this is the cooling system here inside and of course
the heating of our battery. It is a built in component. this is the underbody protection that we
just saw. there is air between and the thing is really robust. Let's look inside
again from the other side then we see here is sealant again. that is what is here in
blue which serves again for moisture protection next to the foam behind it. and yes then
we have an almost finished battery. Here we are at another battery test bench in terms
of pressure so how tight it is. The battery box is tested here for overpressure and underpressure,
so that nothing really comes out of the battery and nothing
can really go in. There are two measuring points on this battery that
meticulously and precisely measure and maybe we're
lucky here now that a test is taking place here in the maintenance cycle and we can maybe see it. so I had
to change sides quickly because you can see it better from here. you can see the cooling connection with the two yellow
covers at the front and now the test begins here, both at the front and at the back, there will be
a test that will run for a certain amount of time but i do not film it all the time... and then we
know whether this battery is absolutely leakproof. So now we have arrived at the end of the battery production
line. here the last functional test, the end of line test, takes place. here the battery
is electrically tested again, the charging of the batteries is also tested here and they actually get some charge. when the modules are delivered
they have about 10 to 14 percent SoC and then they get another 10 percent on top here so that their power
lasts until the vehicle is finished and that the ENYAQ does not
run out of power somewhere here in the factory because that would of course be really bad if an empty battery stops the
car from being finished. yes that was the round trip through the battery production for the MEB Platform
for our Skoda ENYAQs here in mladá boleslav in the component plant, now there is
only the transportation of battery pack to the warehouse. Of course we look at that too.
but in principle you were able to see the entire production and at the end the
batteries are here if they are not already installed. yes these are all MEB batteries and yes
i know there are a few viewers out there who are now wondering if their battery is right now right here. Yes, maybe :)
This warehouse fits around 3,000 batteries here. you just heard the production can make around
1000 (1020) batteries a day. But there was some free space down there in the production hall. There
another production line for another 500 batteries a day is being build soon. That being said this warehouse can
not even store the batteries from two days of production. that's why they always go
very quickly on the journey to the factory so that they finally get into your ENYAQs you're
waiting for so long. if that wasn't an impressive way through the MEB
battery production. i could choose here if i want to see the production of ENYAQ or
do i want to see the battery production. there isn't enough time for both. we were in there for
two hours and both things didn't work on the first visit and so I decided on the
battery production , because car production, hey, you can see that in so many videos.
I found this an awesome insight and that is ultimately what makes our cars so special.
I really hope you liked what you saw the last 15 minutes about the MEB Battery.
If you liked this video, please give me a thumbs up
and if you are already there then please also subscribe to the channel. I will be
very grateful for that and as you know, the subscription is free of charge. if your support goes even a bit further
then you will find a paypal link under the video where you can send me a small donation
or just go to the Thanks from youtube, there is a heart with the dollar sign under the video.
in return you have probably already noticed - I also say every time - the advertising on the channel
is reduced. you can watch all the videos in one go and there are
no annoying overlays and most of the videos don't even have a sponsor mentioned and then I hope
that we will see each other again in the next video and until then stay full of energy!
