Q & A
What is the main focus of Dr. Melissa Gallagher's channel?
-Dr. Melissa Gallagher's channel focuses on natural health resources and addressing the root cause of health imbalances, diseases, and illnesses through naturopathic practices.
Why is gut health considered important in treating cystic acne?
-Gut health is crucial in treating cystic acne because it plays a significant role in skin conditions. An imbalance in the gut microbiome can lead to more harmful bacteria than beneficial ones, contributing to acne.
What is the connection between antibiotics and gut imbalance?
-Antibiotics can cause gut imbalance by killing off certain strains of healthy bacteria, allowing harmful bacteria to proliferate, which can exacerbate cystic acne.
What is the significance of the gut biome in acne treatment?
-The gut biome's balance of good and bad bacteria is significant in acne treatment because an imbalance can lead to increased inflammation and toxicity, which affects the skin's health.
Why is it important to address constipation when dealing with cystic acne?
-Addressing constipation is important because it affects the body's detoxification process. Constipation can lead to hormonal imbalances and a buildup of toxins that can manifest as acne.
How does hormone imbalance contribute to cystic acne?
-Hormone imbalance, particularly high levels of androgenic hormones, can contribute to cystic acne by affecting the skin's sebum production and leading to inflammation.
What dietary changes are recommended for someone with cystic acne?
-Two main dietary changes recommended are removing dairy and gluten from the diet, as they can cause inflammation and increase mucus production, leading to digestive issues and acne.
What is the role of the lymphatic system in skin health?
-The lymphatic system plays a vital role in skin health by removing toxins, pathogens, and excess hormones. Poor lymphatic flow can lead to inflammation and acne.
What is the purpose of dry skin brushing and how does it benefit the body?
-Dry skin brushing is used to stimulate the lymphatic system and improve its flow, which helps in detoxifying the body and reducing the burden of toxic matter that can contribute to acne.
What is the MTHFR genetic defect, and how does it relate to cystic acne?
-The MTHFR genetic defect impairs the body's detoxification process, including the handling of hormones and excess toxins. This can lead to anemia, fatigue, and potentially contribute to cystic acne.
Why is amino acid supplementation important for individuals with cystic acne?
-Amino acid supplementation is important because amino acids are the building blocks of neurotransmitters and support the body's stress management, immunity, and inflammatory response, all of which can impact acne.
What are some natural approaches to healing cystic acne discussed in the video?
-Some natural approaches discussed include gut healing plans, probiotics, omegas, parasite cleanses, addressing food sensitivities, lymphatic drainage therapy, and supporting detoxification pathways.

Dr. Melissa Gallagher, a naturopathic physician, introduces the video by discussing the root causes of cystic acne and natural ways to resolve it. She emphasizes the importance of gut health in treating skin conditions and explains how digestive issues can lead to an imbalance of good and bad bacteria, potentially causing cystic acne. The video suggests that antibiotics can disrupt this balance and proposes a holistic approach to healing, including addressing gut health, which is considered the first step in treating cystic acne.
đ Healing Cystic Acne Through Gut Balancing
The video shares a success story of a young male patient who improved his cystic acne through a gut-healing plan. The plan included detoxification and food elimination, leading to significant improvements in his skin condition within six to eight weeks. Dr. Gallagher discusses a three-part gut-healing plan involving probiotics, healthy omegas, and parasite cleanses. She explains how these elements contribute to gut health and, in turn, improve skin conditions like cystic acne.
đ„ Food Sensitivities and Cystic Acne
Dr. Gallagher highlights food sensitivities, particularly to dairy and gluten, as significant contributors to cystic acne. She explains that these foods can cause inflammation and increase mucus production in the digestive system, which can exacerbate acne. The video recommends removing dairy and gluten from one's diet to reduce inflammation and improve gut health, which is crucial for skin healing.
đ§ Lymphatic System and Detoxification
The video discusses the importance of the lymphatic system in detoxifying the body and its role in managing cystic acne. going to share with you seven of the
root causes behind cystic acne and how
to get ultimate resolution naturally by
healing your body stay tuned for today's
video
[Music]
welcome friends I'm doctor Melissa
Gallagher I'm a naturopathic physician
and if you are new to my channel welcome
I hope you'll subscribe enjoy my natural
health resources community here I focus
as a naturopath on addressing the root
cause of health imbalances from diseases
and illnesses like cancer and digestive
imbalances and hormone imbalances and
everything in between with some
specialization like lymphatic therapy
and my lymphedema practice here I'm
really excited to share with you today's
video where we're going to delve deeper
into cystic acne there isn't a week that
goes by that I have at least 5 to 10 new
patients on my schedule dealing with
cystic acne outbreaks all over their
face their neck their back and even on
other parts of their body from teenagers
to grown adult and women and I really
want to break out the 7 different
reasons why cystic acne is present in
your body and how to avoid antibiotics
and birth control pills as the
traditional go-to s for treatment and
why often those plans and even steroidal
creams are ill effective at minimizing
the root cause of your cystic acne
essentially I tell them I all my
patients who come to me with cystic acne
is your cystic acne is basically your
body telling you something it's talking
to you and we need to interpret what is
it saying what systems and body systems
and areas within the body are in balance
either organ and/or glandular systems
what is not working optimally and so
let's dig into our root cause number one
which is your gut your gut health is
everything it's everything especially
when balancing skin conditions so
basically what I tell my patients who
come to me with cystic acne regardless
of their age ultimately the first thing
we need to do is we need to address your
gut your digestive system so it's
basically from the oral cavity your
mouth the entire esophagus your stomach
liver your pancreas your small and large
intestine and the in the rectum so
basically the whole process it's from
health to by and so really I want you
laughing because I really want to get
into some really nitty-gritty aspects
and sometimes it's a little
uncomfortable I often ask my patients a
lot of somewhat uncomfortable and
unconventional questions like how often
are you having bowel movements what's
the consistency what's the color what
does it look like what does it smell
like and as well as a whole other
assortment of digestive related
questions these are highly important
because what they're going to do as a
practitioner helping you heal your body
naturally from the inside out I need to
assess whether constipation is a factor
your detoxification process your gut
balance from a microbiota so basically
the gut healthy flora your gut biome
microbiome it's a whole bunch of
buzzwords but essentially essentially
what that means is is your gut your
digestive system small and large
intestine are they are more good healthy
bacteria than bad unhealthy bacteria we
need equal levels of both and a lot of
times with cystic acne there's an
imbalance we tend to have more of the
bad and less of the good and so
bacterial balancing is a big factor and
that leads to assessing the degree of
pathogens the type of bacteria that
might be present yeast candida even
parasitic invasions as well as an even
broader compromise state of your
digestive system which is the leaky gut
if you've had any type of antibiotic
scripting or use of antibiotics to deal
with the acne on your face and on your
body
that will definitely create an imbalance
just one dose at any point in your life
from infancy to the time where elders
that antibiotic will kill off certain
types of strains of healthy bacteria or
decrease them and allow for the bad
bacteria levels to be greater than the
good bacteria levels and that's a huge
factor so I want to delve deeper into
that with you in terms of how to resolve
that and this video is going to be a
series of videos we're talking about
healthy skin and healthy gut June for us
here June 2018 at natural health
resources we are delving into gut health
and its really gut health awareness
month and your skin plays a big role in
how your digestive system is looking to
us on the outside and so your skin is a
direct representation of the internal
skin which is your digestive system so
today I want to share with you a story
about how gut balancing and resolving
the gut has a huge role to play in
healing cystic acne I'm gonna share with
you some pictures before and after
treatment with a young teenage male who
came to me via he and his mom she
messaged me on Facebook after watching
one of my youtube videos and said that
my son needs help and I think you can
help him and so we went about a gut
healing plan a protocol detoxification
food elimination just a really over
overall global healing regimen and
within six to eight weeks he really
started to see a significant difference
we're now in the healing phase and
starting to address some of the scarring
but all of the redness the puffiness has
gone away all the boils Postel
pimples raised red skin it's all gone
and it's totally possible I want you to
know this was an individual who was
recommended accutane by his doctor and
recommended antibiotics and just really
crazy crazy things that were going to
create greater imbalance with him
long-term and his mom halted said
timeout we're calling dr. Melissa so I
want to share with you this case because
I want you to know there's hope it's
always my goal here on my youtube
channel
you hope and natural resources to heal
your body so I wanted to dig further
into how the gut can balance you I like
to implement really a three-part gut
healing plan this is a very simplified
plan if you are sitting at home and
you're really frustrated you've tried
everything and you want a little bit
more of a more powerful more
individualized approach I'd be happy to
work with you one-on-one but this
globally will have a powerful impact on
cystic acne the first thing with cystic
acne you want to make sure you are
taking a good healthy probiotic down
below I'll list some of my
recommendations these are affiliate
links they do help support my channel so
I can bring you good content but most
importantly they are highly impactful
products that will benefit you and your
gut so probiotics are number one the
second thing that I always want to make
sure we're getting into your body is
healthy omegas and there are a few
really good Omega doses for some
individuals they need more lubrication
and more support digestive ly to support
the intestinal lining which is really a
big part of the mucosal components and
bacterial influx that is then presenting
in cystic raised postural and cystic
acne even boils these are all related to
you the internal lining in your gut
omegas are very important for promoting
the gut health and then three I always
find it's really important and quite
impactful to involve some degree of a
parasite cleanse and I know it sounds
icky if it makes your skin crawl
it's okay it's totally normal we all at
some point in our lives have some
exposure to parasites and bacteria it's
just the way the world works and in fact
there's more and more studies and
research out there that's showing that
our lack of parasitic exposure is
causing unhealthy gut balance within our
body so I won't go into that any further
than other than recommending a really
good parasite cleanse because that
starts to get things moving and helping
to minimize some of that toxic burden
that your body is dealing with and if
you present with constipation chronic
constipation that is the number one
thing we need to address we need to get
your bowels moving
to process out your toxins which rolls
into number two the second root cause of
cystic acne is hormone imbalance I like
to use facial mapping when I'm working
with my patients it gives me a good idea
of what systems and organs are at play
digestive map is up here liver is around
the eyebrows and then for hormones
number two is hormonal imbalance
hormones basically from the corner of
your nose to your earlobe and then down
this whole space these are all the
different female and male reproductive
hormones at play so your ovaries might
be involved your uterus might be
involved the testes might be involved
whatever area where you're presenting
most that is definitely an indicator or
hormone imbalance and if you are
chronically constipated you will have
hormonal imbalances regardless of your
age that's a big factor hormone balance
is specifically related to high levels
of androgenic hormones these are the
hormones that are typically associated
with higher levels of testosterone DHT
which is a form a precursor to
testosterone as well as women often
present with PCOS there's a coupling of
PCOS and cystic acne and from our
perspective as naturopaths we see the
cysts as very much in line and mirroring
the cysts that are on your ovaries if
you have PCOS and you don't even have to
have cysts on your ovaries to be
presenting with this metabolic syndrome
third on our list is food sensitivities
this is really big so if you are dealing
with cystic acne there are two main food
groups and dietary changes I want you to
make immediately that will have
significant impact on your life 1
removing dairy is crucial especially
non-organic dairy and 2 removing gluten
so gluten and dairy do two things they
cause high levels of inflammation so
that's where you're getting the redness
and the kind of inflamed skin and it's
sore and painful the second thing that
they do they cause more mucus in the
justice system and again we go back
again to the gut the gut is everything
the gut is the heart of skin healing and
balancing and with cystic acne folks
tend to have sensitivities there's a
degree of sensitivities but you are by
far prone to sensitivities to the
protein in milk and in gluten you just
are not digesting them well what they're
doing is they're causing stasis and
digestive grief and they're fermenting
in your gut which is unhealthy and
producing all these toxic byproducts
gasses in your gut that then is flooding
your skin with toxicity because we're
not able to get that out through normal
digestion ie healthy bowel movements and
instead it's choosing a secondary
elimination route which is our skin our
primary elimination route is your gut
digestive Lee bowel movements our
primary secondary is skin and lymphatics
so resolving food sensitivities is going
to be crucial and cutting out milk and
cutting out dairy are key if you are
prone to craving and loving milk I
promise you switching to almond milk
coconut milk even hemp milk will have
great great benefits I'm a big fan of
hemp milk please take note of that I
love love love have milk because it has
fewer allergens sources for many people
it is high in omega 's and it's a great
protein so I love that for folks with
cystic acne fourth on my list and
actually probably one of the most
important components along with
resolving your gut is resolving toxicity
your toxic burden is greater primarily
because of the gut imbalances and the
hormonal imbalances and then the food
sensitivity kicks off this whole
toxicity in your digestive system that
toxicity plays a role in how the skin is
pure appearing from healing well -
staying inflamed - even how your
scarring which video number two in this
series we're going to delve into how to
heal acne scars so super excited to get
to that stay tuned for that in a week
number five on our list many of you know
who are my followers and subscribers
here
one of my core specialties is lymphatic
drainage therapy I'm a lymphedema
specialist and I've studied clinically
how to treat folks with poorly moving
lymphatic flow and the lymph system is
double the size of your vascular system
there are more channels and capillaries
and vascular elements to the lymphatic
system then there are vascular channels
and what that means is double the system
doubled the importance in terms of
detoxing and removing toxicity from your
body and in fact your gut has a huge
amount a very large component of
lymphatic nodes lymph nodes lymphatic
vessels capillaries and lymph channels
pathways that are removing and
eliminating lymphatic toxicity within
the lymph flow we're eliminating cancer
cells we're eliminating pathogens
bacteria fungus Candida
we're alleviating excess hormones
antibodies antibiotics hormonal
supplementation stress hormone all of
that stuff is alleviating through the
lymphatics and what I recommend is
moving your lymphatic flow using this
this is called a dry skin body brush
they actually have smaller brushes as
well these little round brushes they're
same same brush but it's round and it
has a little handle and you can do
lymphatic therapy on your face I'll link
to this video is one of my original
videos I think I have one hundred and
thirty thousand views on that video
where I show you how to do that and then
also I'm going to include this guide
this is a dry skin brush guide download
a free download on how to dry skin brush
your whole body so that we can get that
toxicity out of your body and move the
burden of toxic matter so that it's not
presenting on this elimination pathway
which is your skin and through your
pores via acne and infection and
inflammation so as far as moving your
lifts you can do the dry skin brushing
and then if you feel like you need
additional support if you feel like
you're lymphatics are not moving well
one of the big indicators for a lot of
my patients when I ask
how well is your lymph moving if you
don't sweat normally if you are poor a
poor sweater if you will then that's a
good indicator or signal that your limb
flow is not moving appropriately and in
the right manner and there are
homeopathics that I also incorporate and
recommend to my patients to help support
the limb flow that will also help
support the detoxification as we're
doing a parasite cleanse it's going to
support the detoxification of your gut
as you're eliminating some of the yeast
and the candida by balancing your
probiotic health so I'm going to include
a link to this product it's called lymph
stim and it's a lymphatic homeopathic
drainer it's highly motivating and the
dosage I'll include my dosage
recommendation here this you can only
get in my store it's a
professional-grade product and it my
dosage for folks with cystic acne 30
drops there are little drops you either
gonna put them on your tongue or
dissolve them in a little water and then
kind of swirl it around your mouth
before you it goes down the hatch 30
drops three times a day
that's a therapeutic dose maintenance
dose is 30 drops twice a day but I do
see a lot of benefit and moving the
lymph we really resolve a lot of that
raised kind of puffiness and I know that
many folks are really frustrated with
the inflammation levels but this is
going to really help target that because
the lymph moves inflammation fluid and
excess fluid so that's a big big one
number six on my list this is something
I bet you're probably are not familiar
with or would not hear in a normal
cystic acne related video testing your
detoxification pathways your MTHFR let
me put that here on the screen you can
ask your doctor to test you for this
genetic defect your genetic defect of an
MTHFR essentially means that your energy
trip transport system in the Krebs cycle
this whole kind of inner working of your
cells they're not detoxing well so your
detoxification process of hormones and
essa' excess toxins and all the things I
talked about before
these are impaired you are movement of
that's impaired because you
have a genetic defect called MTHFR and
it's a series in the Krebs cycle and
that can also explain why many of my
folks with cystic acne tend to be anemic
or have lower red blood cell counts
lower ferritin iron levels and also
generally have fatigue and so I want you
to check that out there is testing for
MTHFR and there are ways to resolve
MTHFR with methylated bees and chelated
minerals and if you need help with that
I'd be more than happy to discuss that
even further in another video just let
me know but I want to talk with you
about the detoxification pathways
because your skin being a detoxification
process the secondary elimination route
that's going to tip us off that you're
not detoxing well and so the lymph is
one part of it and then your detox
pathway genetically the MTHFR is a big
factor and so please check that out if
you're dealing with cystic acne number
seven is another one that you probably
are not familiar with but amino acid
deficiency is a huge component so I want
to tell you a few stories of some of the
patients I've seen that have typically
been prescribed antibiotics and/or birth
control pills and usually they're also
recommended in antidepressant because
they're presenting with anxiety and
depression and there's a big big link
between all of that cystic acne
depression and even post antibiotic use
that we generally see lower levels of
amino acids within the body what that
typically means is that amino acids are
the building blocks to your
neurotransmitters they help keep our
bodies healthy neurotransmitters keep
our sympathetic and our parasympathetic
pathways our nervous systems working and
optimized and it also has a big role in
how we manage stress stress is a big
factor for folks with cystic acne
because the stress hormone cortisol
causes inflammation and we see gut
imbalances from the cortisol but more
importantly there are some missing links
when it comes to these amino acids one
of the big amino acids that we want to
analyze definitely supplement for
imbalance is l-lysine
a lysine is a big one you might be
familiar with it because it's off
and recommend it if you have any type of
skin eruptions that are related to
poxviruses like herpes and there are two
herpes simplex is as well as shingles
those all benefit from an amino acid
called l-lysine a lysine has a
responsibility in supporting collagen
production it boosts our immunity and
helps our body detoxify and support
ourselves from inflammatory responses a
lysine also balances your hormones so
when we're looking at your skin globally
and we want to balance and minimize the
root cause of cystic acne the last and
final aspect of that is boosting your
amino acids and there are ways to test
for amino acids and it's definitely
important that we resolve the overall
body dry skin brushing clearing out the
gut and moving or your detox channels
I'm constipated your body lubricating
your system with good fluids water
magnesium ginger tea those are all
things that are also going to support
your body if any of this resonates with
you I'd love to hear from you
specifically my question to you today is
how is cystic acne affecting your life I
