Summary
TLDRThe speaker discusses the use of ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds) as emergency funds, emphasizing the importance of considering specific features when choosing one for this purpose. They evaluate various ETFs, including the iShares Euro Ultra-Short Bond UCITS ETF, noting its acceptable expense ratio and replication method, but expressing concerns about its exposure to variable-rate corporate bonds and its performance during market downturns. The speaker also mentions the Amundi ETF, which tracks environmental, social, and governance criteria, but notes its higher tracking error. They highlight the benefits of a true money market ETF, such as the PEPP 06mth Eurozone Government Bill ETF, for its stability and automatic adjustment to current interest rates. The discussion also touches on the personal choice of using an ETF over a savings account for an emergency fund due to ease of access, automatic updates, and despite the minor drawbacks like transaction fees. The speaker advises maintaining some liquidity in a current account for unexpected needs and concludes by encouraging viewers to carefully consider their options before making a decision.
Takeaways
- 📈 The speaker is discussing ETFs (Exchange-Traded Funds), specifically those used as emergency funds, and their evaluation based on various factors.
- 💡 The first ETF mentioned, iShares Euro Ultra-Short Bond UCITS ETF, has an acceptable expense ratio of 0.09% and is designed for accumulation without expecting dividends.
- 🔍 The ETF replicates the Markit index, which consists of short-term, investment-grade, Euro-denominated corporate bonds with a maturity of up to one year.
- ⚠️ The speaker points out that the ETF has a higher volatility compared to typical money market funds, especially during the COVID-19 crisis, which could be a downside for an emergency fund.
- 🌍 The fund has a geographical exposure of 18% to the United States, despite being Euro-denominated, which introduces a consideration for currency risk.
- 📊 The fund uses a sampling technique, which means it does not hold all the components of the index, leading to potential deviations from the index performance.
- 💹 The fund can engage in securities lending, which could be seen as a risk for a product intended to be more secure, like an emergency fund.
- 🚫 The speaker concludes that the discussed ETF may not be suitable as an emergency fund due to its distribution, variable-rate bonds, and corporate bond nature, which are more volatile.

Q & A
What is the primary concern when considering ETFs for an emergency fund?
-The primary concern is the stability and liquidity of the ETF, ensuring it can be reliably used as a safety net without significant fluctuations in value.
What is the role of 'replicazione' or 'replication' in the context of ETFs?
-Replicazione refers to how the ETF mimics the performance of its underlying index. It can be done through physical replication, where the ETF holds the same assets as the index, or through synthetic replication, which may involve derivatives.
Why might an investor prefer an ETF over a savings account for an emergency fund?
-An investor might prefer an ETF because it can provide automatic updates to interest rates and returns without the need for manual intervention, offering more flexibility and potentially higher returns.
What is the significance of the 'distribuzione' or distribution mentioned in the script?
-Distribuzione refers to the distribution policy of the ETF, which can be important for an emergency fund as investors may prefer reinvestment of dividends rather than receiving them as income.
How does the script differentiate between a true money market ETF and one that only appears similar?
-The script differentiates by looking at the underlying assets, regulatory requirements, and the nature of the ETF's holdings. A true money market ETF would hold very short-term, high-quality debt instruments and be subject to specific banking regulations.
What is the impact of exposure to different geographical regions on an ETF's performance?
-Geographical exposure can introduce currency risk and affect the ETF's performance due to varying economic conditions in different regions. Diversification across regions can mitigate risk but may also introduce complexity.
Why might an investor be wary of ETFs with corporate bonds in their holdings?
-Corporate bonds can be more volatile and subject to greater fluctuations in value compared to government bonds, which are typically found in money market ETFs. This increased risk may not be desirable for an emergency fund.
What is the significance of the 'tasso variabile' or variable rate mentioned in the script?
-Variable rate refers to bonds with interest rates that can change over time. This can introduce additional risk to the ETF's returns, especially in a rising interest rate environment.
How does the script evaluate the size of the ETF in terms of its suitability as an emergency fund?
-The script evaluates the size of the ETF by looking at its total assets under management. A larger ETF is generally preferred as it can offer more liquidity and stability.
What is the 'tracking error' mentioned in the script, and why is it important?
-Tracking error is the divergence between the ETF's performance and that of its underlying index. A low tracking error is desirable as it indicates that the ETF is closely replicating the index's performance.
Why might an investor choose an ETF over a savings account for an emergency fund despite potential transaction fees?
-An investor might choose an ETF for its automatic updating of interest rates, higher potential returns, and the convenience of managing the fund through an existing brokerage account without the need to open a new savings account.
What are the considerations for liquidity when choosing an ETF for an emergency fund?
-Liquidity considerations include the ease of redeeming the ETF's shares for cash, the trading volume of the ETF, and the potential impact of market closures on the ability to access funds.

📈 ETFs as Emergency Funds: An In-Depth Analysis
The speaker discusses the use of ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds) as emergency funds, emphasizing the importance of understanding their specific characteristics. The focus is on the 'ISEEs Euro Ultra Short Bond UCITS ETF,' which has an expense ratio of 0.09%. The speaker notes the fund's synthetic replication method and its distribution policy, preferring accumulation over dividend distribution to avoid taxes and inflation impacts. The fund's exposure to corporate bonds with a short to medium term (0-3 years) and variable interest rates is highlighted, along with its performance during the COVID-19 crisis. The geographical exposure, with 18% in the US despite being Euro-denominated bonds, is also mentioned. The speaker concludes that due to these factors, the fund may not be the most suitable for an emergency fund.
🌐 Global Exposure and Currency Risks in ETFs
The paragraph delves into the concept of currency risk when investing in bonds issued by companies from different countries. It clarifies that the risk of currency exchange lies with the bond issuer rather than the investor. The speaker also discusses the global exposure of the fund, which includes regions beyond the Eurozone, such as Canada, the US, and the UK. The fund's sampling method is explored, showing that it holds 509 out of 516 components of the index it tracks. The fund's use of securities lending is mentioned, which could potentially increase the risk profile. Lastly, the speaker points out that the fund is not a money market fund and thus not subject to the same liquidity and safety requirements, leading to a conclusion that it might not be ideal as an emergency fund due to its corporate bonds and their fluctuating nature.
💼 Corporate Bonds in ETFs: Environmental, Social, and Governance Criteria
The speaker evaluates another ETF, which replicates an index of Euro-denominated corporate bonds that adhere to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. The fund has a higher expense ratio of 0.15% and invests in bonds with a maturity of 0-1 year. The speaker notes a slightly higher volatility compared to a standard money market ETF but finds the fund to be overall better suited for the intended purpose. The fund's composition is detailed, with a focus on the top contributors to the index and the fund's adherence to the index through physical replication. The speaker expresses some concern about the potential deviation from the index due to the fund's sampling method but acknowledges the fund's close adherence to the index's top constituents.
🏦 Traditional Money Market Funds vs. ETFs for Emergency Funds
The speaker compares traditional money market funds with ETFs for the purpose of emergency funds. They chose an ETF due to the inconvenience of opening a new deposit account and the automatic updating of rates in an ETF, which aligns with the current market rates. The speaker prefers the automatic nature of an ETF, which purchases new short-term bonds at the most updated rate, avoiding the need to manually check and update a fixed deposit account. The downside of ETFs is the transaction fees, which can impact the small returns of a money market ETF. The speaker also addresses a comment from Corrado about the need for immediate liquidity during market closures, suggesting that maintaining some cash in a current account can cover sudden needs without having to withdraw from the ETF.
🤔 The Choice of ETFs Over Other Investment Vehicles
The speaker concludes by reiterating the personal choice of using an ETF for an emergency fund, inviting others to reflect carefully before making their own decisions. They discuss the advantages of having an ETF that automatically updates its rates and the ease of purchasing additional ETFs through an already open securities account. The speaker acknowledges the drawbacks, including transaction fees and the minimal returns of money market ETFs. They also mention Corrado's suggestion of maintaining a portion of liquid assets in money market ETFs for immediate access during market closures. The speaker advises always having some liquidity on hand for everyday needs and unforeseen circumstances.

me l'avete chiesto in migliaia di voi
short Bond uccisa etf eccetera eccetera
il terra è buono il ter è 0,09 che per
un etf monetario direi accettabile ne
esistono di più bassi però poi abbiamo
visto gli inghippi della replica
sintetica e quindi va bene così
distribuzione
insomma
tasse
preferirei un'accumulazione fin dal
momento in cui quei soldi mi servissero
specie perché stiamo un po' rincorrendo
senza riuscire a raggiungerla poi
l'inflazione per cui
azzopparsi ulteriormente I rendimenti in
questo modo non è il massimo
replicazione Io l'avrei chiamata replica
le applicazioni campionamento ok Ok
dimensione del fondo ottima 2 miliardi e
7 quindi abbastanza scambiato abbastanza
comprato partecipazioni come vediamo 496
andando a leggere la descrizione
scopriamo che replica l'indice markit
eccetera eccetera
il quale replica le obbligazioni
societarie Eccole qua a breve scadenza
denominate in euro
investment grade
scadenza Zero un anno tasso fisso
03 anni tasso variabile Ok scelta scelta
curiosa questa dell'indice
Chissà perché
però
vedo già un altro punto a sfavore
dell'utilizzo come fondo di emergenza 0
3 anni tasso variabile
Ok
l'indice di spesa complessiva l'abbiamo
visto eccetera eccetera
proprio
con il fatto che anche delle
obbligazioni a tre anni a tasso
vede Si vede abbastanza dal grafico No
andamento abbastanza lineare
andando a vedere poi l'esposizione
mette in euro effettivamente incassa
euro e
tu non sei sottoposto a rischio di
cambio Tuttavia comunque da considerare
non sei più solamente esposto all'area
euro ma una esposizione più globale se
vogliamo Oddio Comunque gran parte vedo
Canada Stati Uniti
Regno Unito che non era euro Svizzera
e altre Ecco allora per quanto riguarda
il campionamento mi sono andato a vedere
l'indice c'è questa comodissima
interfaccia dove tutti Vai a vedere 10
componenti per volta e a quanto pare
sono 510 11 12 13 14 quindi sono 516
componenti dell'indice mentre l'etf ne
ha 509 quindi sì campionamento ma in
sostanza penso sia abbastanza aderente
andando a vedere i singoli componenti
obbligazioni Corporate in euro
può sparse diciamo per per tutto il
mondo Australia
273%, Austria Danimarca eccetera
eccetera In sostanza niente di strano no
rispetto agli altri etf Unica nota Forse
curiosa questo Black Rock euro liquida è
veramente Leo Wear Fund a coprire
0,84% delle etf
evitabile forse hanno coperto una Una
piccola porzione che non corrispondeva
rispetto all'indice quel quel buco
diciamo rispetto all'indice Può darsi
Non saprei questo etf a quanto pare
utilizza il Security landing per cui fa
prestito titoli
all'incirca fino allo 0.1% ok Sì direi
dalle percentuali all'incirca
Sì all'incirca Ha rispettato il tracking
centrale
eccetera eccetera riguardo
qualità maturi di liquidità e altri
aspetti di sicurezza che i mari Market
fand possono acquistare
Insomma di conseguenza non lo
considererei un etf monetario vero e
proprio nonostante Ci assomigli per via
delle maturiti molto brevi che contiene
Insomma In generale
Zero One Year
isgs etf Allora
terre direi anche qui più che
accettabile 0.08 ad accumulazione bene
però replica sampling
perché già sttf è andato in inglese
scuro
e partecipazioni tra virgolette solo 239
Che altro dire replica l'indice message
your Corporate obbligazioni societari
determinate in euro validate yesg quindi
per criteri ambientali sociali e di
government e di governance con Rating
investment grade Ok
scadenza 01 anni quindi direi che
comunque complessivamente migliore del
precedente per il nostro scopo andando a
guardare il
foglio informativo diciamo
etf monetario standard
Infatti se lo vediamo è questo fucsia
diciamo rispetto agli altri analizzati
comunque molto contenuta 250 titoli
allora
[Musica]
i primi dnb Bank goldman Sachs jp Morgan
b&b e mi sembra che ci siamo vediamo qua
si riempie i tempi Morgan goldman
eccetera
compra solo obbligazioni a tasso fisso
ok
E appunto come vediamo essendo un etf un
indice
isg evita le seguenti attività
commerciali in treccanimento per adulti
alcool gioco d'azzardo tabacco energia
nucleare eccetera eccetera eccetera
[Musica]
l'esposizione all'indice sarà conseguito
attraverso una replica diretta replica
fisica a Campione effettuando
principalmente investimenti diretti in
valori immobiliari al diritto idonee
rappresentative degli elementi
costitutivi dell'indice
in una proporzione estremamente simile
al fine di replicare il rendimento
dell'indice e comparto intende attuare
un modello di replica campionato non si
prevede pertanto che il comparto deterrà
in ogni momento tutti i singoli elementi
costitutivi
deviarne
non conosco adesso i dettagli di quanto
può deviare e quanto no però insomma
misterioso no a dover controllare magari
ogni tanto
quindi
Ok diciamo accettabile accettabile ad
accumulazione replica campionamento 47
milioni quindi diciamo molto piccolino e
replica l'indice eurozon government Bill
06modcapt per cui solo titoli di Stato
area Euro con maturity da 0 a 6 mesi
e
anzi no qui dice 0.12 ok
andando a vedere poi ho fatto una
diciamo una piccola comparazione tra
l'etf e l'indice e diciamo ci siamo
abbastanza
è abbastanza rispettato così da
un'occhiata veloce devo dire Non ho
trovato molte informazioni il sito di
invesco non è completo come a Mondeo Hi
shares
come vedete andamento piuttosto lineare
ottimizzata dove poi vengono utilizzati
dei sostituti o dei titoli che non
c'entrano nulla magari
bene adesso Passiamo all'altra domanda
richiestissima da migliaia di persone
nei commenti
Ovvero come mai ho scelto un etf
monetario e non un conto deposito o
qualcos'altro per il mio fondo di
emergenza
partiamo subito col dire che è una
scelta personale e che ho preso io in
autonomia e Invito chiunque ascolti
fornire i propri dati
attendere conferme bonifici di conferma
eccetera eccetera
assolutamente in automatico
a livello di tassi a livello di
rendimenti Ovvero le obbligazioni a
breve scadenza che contiene
hanno quel determinato tasso di
interesse mano a mano che l'etf compra
nuove obbligazioni a brevissima scadenza
le compra al Tasso più aggiornato
possibile per cui non ho quel magari
fastidio che potrei avere con un conto
deposito il quale non aggiorna i tassi
in base agli ultimissimi casi a
disposizione per cui in un periodo
specialmente in cui i tassi vanno
aumentando preferisco avere l'etf
deposito e quant'altro mentre per me
etf monetaria a piccolissima rendita
piccolissimo rendimento
TF monetari
[Musica]
come ragionamento ci sta Infatti credo
percentuale viene liquida percentuali
incassati dallo stipendio dalle fatture
potrete affrontarla senza grossi
vero e proprio comunque Ecco tenete
