Outlines

Highlights
Cross contour lines are a powerful tool for artists to create the illusion of 3D on a 2D surface.
Artist Kenzo aims to provide guidance on mastering the skill of using cross contour lines effectively.
Cross contour lines help viewers understand the 3D shape of the subject being drawn.
The laser beam technique is introduced as a method to improve the understanding and application of cross contour lines.
Drawing through the whole cross contour line shape helps artists grasp the 3D form more accurately.
Simplifying the cross contour line by ignoring minor details allows for a clearer representation of the 3D form.
Cross contour lines should be perpendicular to the form to maintain accuracy in the representation.
The laser beam technique involves imagining a laser beam being shot from the eye to determine the angle of cross contour lines.
Understanding angles and how they affect the cross contour line is crucial for accurate 3D representation.
Even in complex figures, the laser beam technique can clarify the direction and shape of cross contour lines.
In the final drawing, cross contour lines might not be visible, but they can still be used effectively by finding natural excuses to include them.
Kenzo is organizing an online workshop to teach strategies for simplifying complex figures and improving life drawing skills.
The workshop will cover the best approach to learning life drawings and the sequence to work on different skills.
Kenzo's six-week course is即将推出, aiming to further enhance the understanding and application of cross contour lines in art.
Using hatching or emphasizing natural features like folds or shadows can be a way to incorporate cross contour lines subtly.
Kenzo encourages viewers to engage and provide feedback on the clarity and effectiveness of the techniques discussed.
Transcripts
cross contour lines are super powerful
super effective
i think they're really useful to learn
but i don't think there's enough
guidance out there about
how to get this skill and how to use
them effectively
so that's what we're going to try and do
in this video
and the way we're going to do it is with
by shooting laser beams out of our eyes
so that's pretty cool my name is kenzo
and this is love life drawing
so as artists we have to create an
illusion
we have a 2d surface but we want people
to believe what they're looking at
is 3d we want it to feel 3d there's
loads of ways that you can create that
illusion
one of the most direct ways is cross
contour lines
because i've drawn one on myself here a
cross contour line is a line that just
literally goes
right around the form right around the
3d shape and so by drawing that on your
paper you're just telling the viewer
this is
what the 3d shape is so we looked at
boxes and things before
and that is also a way of just really
clearly directly telling the viewer
this is the 3d shape you know by doing
cylinders and boxes
i feel like cross contour lines are a
little bit more
intuitive you feel the cross contour
line
as you draw it rather than just being
really analytical
because one way of drawing a cross
contour line
is imagining yourself drawing the line
like i did
earlier just drawing the line around the
form
and so as you're drawing you're feeling
the form
in 3d space and drawing it into your
drawing
but we need that's not enough to really
understand what we're doing when we're
doing cross contour lines
so i think we need a little bit more
clarity
and so we're going to look at five
principles that are going to help us
with this including the laser beam
technique
so the first principle is to draw
through
the whole cross contour line shape the
shape created by the cross contour lines
so if you're drawing my forearm
you would draw the bit of this green
line that you can't see as well you have
to use your imagination and just draw
that
why do i say you should do that well
very often i think people would make
their cross contour line like that
so really quite shallow and the reason
for that
is i think the thought process is the
cross contour line is a curve
i'll just do some sort of curve on this
form
when you imagine that that line has to
go all the way around that cylinder
go back in the other direction right it
it the line has to curve around and go
back in the other direction to come back
to the other side
that's when you're going to realize what
shape
it should be you know how deep the curve
should be
to get that cross contour line so
that's why it's useful to draw through
it now
sometimes you might not want to draw the
whole thing you might just want to draw
the bit you can see
but at least do the motion of the whole
shape and ghost draw the whole shape
before you do cross contour line
the second principle is to make it
simple
so i know that you know you could do a
cross contour line that follows all the
little bumps
of um you know the muscle not that
there's loads of muscles here but like
you know there's little bumps and
undulations and details
created by this form it's a complicated
form on this figure
i think try and turn it into something a
bit simpler
you know something like that because all
we're really trying to do is
explain the basic three dimensions here
not the details of the three dimensions
but the basics of it
later on you can build on more
complicated
forms with your observations and your
anatomical know-how
as you build the drawing and then the
next thing is to keep those
cross-contour lines
perpendicular to the form so if you
imagine
um a line going through the heart of
this 3d shape
right through the middle our cross
contour lines are going to be at right
angles to that
what i mean is they're not going to be
like on a slant
you know because if you make your cross
contour line on a slant which
it seems silly with this glass but when
you're drawing like
really complicated shapes i think
sometimes you're like okay i'm going to
have the cross contour line just sort of
swooping around
in this weird angle i think it's a bit
confusing
so if you simplify the form down think
about what direction is the
that simplified version of the shape
going
and just make your cross contour line
right at right angles to that
so the next principle is
the laser beam so this is where it
if this is going to sound a bit
confusing at first i think
and then i'm going to keep explaining it
and hopefully it will
make a lot of sense and it's something
where i think you can just
get an intuitive sense of it okay so
come on rubber band cooperate please
i'm looking at this 3d shape i shoot a
laser beam
out of my eyes at this level here and i
think what's the cross contour line
of the form here well if i think about
that
line through the heart of this form my
laser beam is at right angles to it
so the angle above it and the angle
below it on both sides is the same
90 degrees so the cross con there's no
cross contour line curve there's no
curve
it's a straight line across as soon as i
go
direct my laser beam down here
now it's not perpendicular to the form
now there's a smaller
angle between the laser beam you know i
do
shoot the laser beam out there's a
smaller angle here
and this is a bigger angle yeah
and from my point of view the cross
contour line
curves are curving back towards the
smaller angle now
don't worry if that makes no sense
because we're going to keep going with
this
i direct my laser beams my laser beam
eyes
up here at the form here
okay this side there's a smaller angle
here there's a bigger angle okay
so from my point of view now the curves
are coming
back towards the smaller angle
how big should the cross contour line
shape be well it's not it's smaller
but it's not that small of an angle it's
quite a big angle
so it is smaller than this side but it's
not that much smaller
so it's quite a small narrow
shallow cross contour line shape whereas
if i angle it like this now
and i point my laser beam eyes up here
this is quite a small angle now
so the cross contour line shape from my
point of view
is big now
why is that useful to think about
because with a glass it's easy to think
about the cross contour lines or easier
with a figure it's hard and all you have
to and it's like
all these different shapes all at
different angles to your eyes
it's all at different angles to your
eyes people hold their bodies at all
these funny angles
some things are you know coming towards
you some things are going away from you
all you need to do to think about what's
the cross contour line
on this bit of the finger versus this
bit of the finger versus this bit
or this bit of the forearm is
shoot the laser beam at that point so
even on the same form
i could have cross contour lines coming
up this way curving
this way here and curving this way
up here which is confusing and then
being
straight across here in the middle but
if i think about the laser beams it's
not confusing because it's a laser beam
smaller angles this side curving this
way laser beam
smaller angle this side curving that way
and then you've got like you know you've
got something like this
which way should the cross contour lines
be going relative to your eyes
you shoot the laser beam out in where's
the angle smaller
just before the next section i wanted to
let you know i'm putting together an
online workshop for you the details are
in the description
we're going to cover a strategy that
will help us turn the figure which is so
complex
into something straightforward and i
don't just mean vague advice like use
gesture or use boxes it's
simpler than that and it's going to take
the mystery out of ideas like gesture
we're also going to take a step back and
look at the best approach to learning
life drawings so the sequence
to work on the different skills rather
than just trying to learn everything at
once
and we're going to take a peek at our
new six week course which is going to be
coming up soon and i'm really really
excited about that
you can register for the workshop with
the link in the description
okay let's get back to it so the fifth
principle
is in your final drawing you might not
want there to be cross contour lines
you should do cross contour line
drawings for the practice and for
getting a sense of things in 3d
but when you're doing drawing that you
want to look cool or whatever
you might not want cross contour lines
on it
but that doesn't mean that you can't use
cross contour lines you just need to
find excuses to put them in
right so here i've got
okay imagine i don't have an actual
cross contour line on me there's no
cross contour lines on my arm
okay but there is because there's the
this bit of my t-shirt that's a cross
contour line
here on my finger there's no cross
contour lines here
but there is because there's these
little folds of skin on my knuckle here
or
there's the sort of edge of the nail
there or
um uh there is
let's say it's like so let's have got
this
there's the edge oh there's a this is a
bit of a shadow here
this is lit and this is dark the edge of
the shadow shape
wraps around the form and you draw your
shadow
finding an excuse to naturally
emphasize the cross contour line or if
you're using hatching
you know you've got this area in in
in shadow here you can hatch
in contour lines that go around in a
direction that kind of wraps around the
form
man let me know in the comments if that
was made things clearer
or more confusing with my laser beam
stuff
there should be another video up here on
the screen somewhere
thank you guys for hanging out with me
while i
draw lines on myself and all this stuff
and i really hope that you got something
out of it
you
