Transcripts
A very special wild cat that is known for its
thick coat and very nasty temper. Among his
relatives, he is perhaps the slowest, but
this does not prevent him from being successful in hunting, as well as surviving
in incredibly harsh conditions. Hello friends, you are on the channel
Time with benefit and the hero of today's episode is an incredibly
secretive manul. Manul is one of the most modest
in size among the cat family. With a body length
of just over half a meter, it can weigh up to 5 kg. In this
it is not much different from a domestic cat, but given the
difficult weather conditions, this animal has a stockier
body with a thick layer of fat and incredibly
fluffy hair, which visually increases the size of the cat.
Manul has the thickest fur among all cats
in the world. Such an outfit helps him survive in severe frosts
with piercing winds, which are typical of his
habitats. The cat can be found in a large
area of Asia, where he chooses steppes, semi-deserts
and even mountains up to a height of 5,000 meters.
Literally the entire body of an animal is adapted to conserve
heat and energy. Extremely short paws reduce
heat loss, but deprive the cat of the opportunity
to run fast and for a long time, therefore, moving in short
dashes, manul relies on stealth. Clinging
as close as possible to the snow, the cat tries to blend in with
the terrain; against the backdrop of snow, it is unlikely to become invisible,
but due to the sparse vegetation of a predator, it is not so easy to notice,
especially when it seems to spread over the snow and
completely freeze, turning into one of
the many stones for prying eyes. First of all, disguise
saves him from predators, because local eagles and even
foxes will not miss the opportunity to attack. When the situation
becomes too dangerous, the manul can remain
motionless for hours, and even a layer of snow will not make it budge
. Such a cautious animal
simply needs an ideal shelter, but its retractable
claws are not adapted for digging, therefore, in addition to
crevices in stones, the predator occupies the holes of marmots, badgers
and foxes. However, stealth also plays a key role
in hunting. It's easy to be invisible with short legs,
but deep snow often makes things difficult.
With the onset of summer, the manul changes beyond recognition.
The air temperature can rise to 40 degrees,
by which time the cat loses up to half of its weight,
because only the absence of excess fat and much more meager
fur allow the predator to survive the scorching heat. In summer, the camouflage
of the manul becomes much more effective, because it is not easy to see
a predator of this size against the backdrop of windswept steppes
. Low-set ears not only
help to keep warm, but also help to become
even more inconspicuous, which is especially important in the absence of
natural shelters. It is not so easy to get close to vigilant rodents
, because, despite their size, their hearing is incredibly
sensitive, but the manul has a solid reserve
of patience, so after a series of silent dashes,
he has every chance for the final throw.
By the way, unlike most relatives, the manul has
round pupils, which is very unusual for small cats.
Kittens usually appear in late spring. Carefully
hidden caves among giant boulders become an excellent
refuge, saving animals from hot summers and numerous
predators. Already from the first months of life, babies instinctively
merge with the area, without giving a reason to discover themselves.
But, as it should be for kittens, sooner or later they forget
about the danger and begin to frolic,
honing their hunting skills step by step. As they grow older, the kittens
begin to accompany their mother on the hunt. Complete concentration
is important here , so the cat
does not pay attention to the baby at all. She focuses entirely
on her task, because the slightest delay - and everything will have to
start over. Fortunately, the vole was in the teeth,
but even such an inconspicuous hunter only one out of three
attempts ends in success. On average, a manul needs
to catch about 5 rodents a day, but if there are offspring,
the cat is forced to hunt all her free time. To
the mother spends a lot of
time getting close to the prey, but the whole idea collapses in a second through the efforts of
an inexperienced hunter. Like many felines, the hunting
ritual is accompanied by a chaotic twitching
of the tip of the tail. It is believed that in this way the predator
prepares for the throw, distributing the body weight and calculating
the trajectory of the jump. But there is an opinion that such a technique
seems to hypnotize the target: the vole sees the hunter,
but the constantly changing position of the tail diverts all attention to itself
: the rodent seems to assess the level of danger
of an unfamiliar object, not paying attention to the motionless
cat. And this gives the detected predator a chance for a successful
jump. Manuls are true nomads:
every few days the family is forced to change shelter
in order to renew the food base and not attract too much
attention of predators. Kittens quickly grow up and
very soon master the technique of imperceptible movement.
However, the first prey becomes incredibly difficult: imitating
their mother, young hunters still cannot boast of the speed
of reflexes, but very soon the luckiest and most patient
will succeed. Teenagers have very little time left,
because they have to winter alone, and in order to
survive, kittens need to accumulate fat reserves.
Despite being a fast learner,
only one in three is destined to survive the first year of life. The mother leaves
the kittens, but in order to give them a better chance of survival,
she sacrifices her own well-being, moving
from places rich in shelters for many kilometers.
In recent years, the manul has almost completely disappeared from
the open steppes. Due to human intervention, an incredibly vast
range has narrowed to small isolated areas.
Currently, the approximate population size
is estimated at 50,000 individuals; perhaps only incredible
secrecy, vigilance and hard-to-reach habitats
allowed this unique cat to survive
to this day. If you liked the release, support
