tape I'm going to teach you how you
think which is fundamental to
understanding how you can learn to
develop the mental skills of the world's
greatest
Traders the bottom line is that Traders
and Traders alone produce their profits
or losses you create your own trading
problems and you need only understand
how you do that and then change what you
do to solve them
in most cases even a minor change in
your thinking will produce a major
change in your
profits on this tape I will help you
gain a better understanding of how you
create your trading Problems by the way
you
think many people in fact have remarked
to me that they were never exposed to
any of this material in college or even
in graduate psychology
courses yet it is only after mastering
this material that they begin to realize
just how they do
think if you want to control your
behavior you must understand how you run
your own
brain what you experience in this life
depends upon how your brain codes
information which may be quite different
than the information
itself as a result what you think about
the market is probably quite different
from the market
itself in addition the way you think is
different from the way any one else
thinks you are
unique nevertheless there are certain
common elements to the way people think
and it is those common elements that are
the topic of this
tape your five sensory systems seeing
hearing feeling smelling and tasting
constitute your primary contact with
physical reality all of your input from
the world comes through those
senses since those five senses
constitute the only information your
brain has your internal experience is
also coded in terms of those five
modalities your brain literally
represents or
represents information to you in terms
of visual images internal sounds or
voices and internal
feelings in addition you probably also
have some internal smells and taste but
not a lot since those answer in
modalities are not emphasized in the
American culture overseas listeners
probably have a better appreciation for
these other ways of
thinking for example the information you
are currently receiving through this
tape is auditory you are hearing the
sound of my voice and at the same time
you may be talking to yourself about
what I am
saying are you telling yourself
something
now or translating what I am saying into
pictures are you seeing pictures inside
your head
now or translating what I am saying into
feelings do you have a feel for what I'm
talking
about all of your experience is coded
into these major modalities hearing
seeing and
feeling in addition as you will learn
later in this tape the specific
qualities of those
experiences that is the submodalities
are also
important let's explore how you think by
going over these sensory experiences in
some
detail first let's look at internal
sounds I'd like you to repeat after me
the phrase I can be the world's greatest
traitor just say it to yourself go ahead
and say
it did you believe
it now say it again but this time say it
very slowly and softly I can be the
world's greatest
traitor how did that affect you did you
believe
it did saying it in that way get you
charged
up chances are that it didn't in fact
research has shown that you can easily
put yourself to sleep by talking to
yourself very slowly in that same
manner now say it again to yourself only
this time say it slowly but
loudly I can be the world's greatest
traitor how was that different from
before did it affect you
differently now say it again three times
but this time say it to yourself fast
and Loud getting faster and louder each
time you say it I'm not going to say it
to you just go ahead and do it to
yourself inside your
head what was that experience like for
you were you charged up
motivated chances are you may have been
because people frequently motivate
themselves through selft talk but it is
the way you say it that is
important now let's try try something a
little bit more
challenging think about Mickey Mouse and
Donald Duck having a conversation and
notice the qualities of the two voices
inside your
head first hear Mickey Mouse say sell
100 shares of
IBM actually hear Mickey's voice saying
that then hear Donald Duck respond no
buy five soybean contracts you'll make a
lot of money hear that inside your head
in Donald Duck's
voice how loud is Mickey's
voice Donald's
voice how clear is each
voice which one is clearer and more
understandable what's the pitch of each
voice is it high or is it
low is Mickey talking fast or
slow who's faster Mickey or
Donald where do you hear the voices are
they inside your head or do they sound
like they're coming from an external
Source if they are inside your head
where do they sound like they're coming
from the right or the left or the center
or if they are outside your head where
does it sound like they're coming from
from the right or left or
Center how do you know that one voice is
Mickey Mouse and that the other voice is
Donald
Duck and most importantly how believable
are the
voices are you willing to buy five
soybean contracts if you tell yourself
to do so in Donald Duck's
voice it's interesting what saying
something in the voice of a cartoon
character will do for you isn't
it already you may have learned a lot
about how your selft talk influences you
if those exercises had little impact
upon you then vision and feeling are
probably more important to how you
think however if the selft talk did not
have that great an impact upon you
consciously then your subconscious mind
may use that modality
extensively if so then your selft talk
May significantly influence your
behavior you just aren't aware of how it
does
it now let's try an exercise with
internal imagery or
pictures remember what the first car you
owned look
like what color was
it did it have any
dents can you see and read the license
plate number
if so what was
it unless you just drew a blank which is
still using visual imagery but in an
unresourceful way you just showed
yourself a clear example of how you
think in terms of
pictures to respond to those questions
about your first car you must have seen
a picture of
it look at that picture of your car
again where do you see it
straight in front of
you up and to the
left up and to the
right some other
place how far away is
it how big is
it is the picture in
3D does it have a frame around
it or is it a panoramic
picture
how big is the car with respect to the
picture you
see now do you see how you think in
pictures I always find it amazing when a
television announcer is interviewing
someone and ask questions like can you
shed some light on what is happening in
that
situation can you help me clarify the
big picture of what is happening he's
not just saying words like light and
clarify and picture he is actually
thinking in terms of pictures and he
wants to see them more clearly he
believes that when his internal pictures
are clear then other people's pictures
will also be
clearer let's try another example with
pictures remember the last trading
mistake you made and get a full visual
image of that
mistake take your time and make that
image as detailed as
possible now let's play with that image
a little
bit are you seeing yourself in the
picture or are you seeing a scene as if
you were
there for example you might just be
seeing your
hands if you see only your
hands change the picture so you see
yourself in
it how does that change it
now let's try a few more
changes go back to the original
picture and let's get closer to your
problem so bring the picture in
closer what does that do to
it now let's put some distance between
you and your
problem so move the picture far
away what does that do to your
problem again go back to your original
picture shed some light on that problem
by making it a lot
brighter what does that do to
it now let's look on the dark side make
your picture really
dim what does that do to
it go back to the original
picture and let's blow your problem out
of proportion take the central item in
your picture
and just make that part of it much
bigger really blow it out of
proportion what
happens now let's get a new perspective
on
it take that same
picture and move it up high and over to
your
right also make it
smaller what does that do
now put your problem behind you that's
it just take your problem or the picture
of it and shove it behind you so that
you can't see it what happens
now one last exercise
here take the picture of your problem
and bring it back
and now start to spin the problem in
front of
you make your picture spin
faster even faster much faster and as it
continues to accelerate spinning faster
and faster watch it begin to
disintegrate watch the pieces fly off
into
space as it spins faster and faster
notice that it disintegrates more and
more until finally it's
gone and notice now that no matter what
you do it is
gone what was that experience like for
you can you get your picture back or is
it really
gone once again for some of you the
exercise with visual images
may have been a much more powerful
experience than for
others if you think in images then you
probably notice some significant
changes on the other hand if these were
not meaningful for you then perhaps your
visual images are mostly
unconscious now let's try and exercise
with internal
feelings there are two types of feeling
responses feelings that have to do with
thinking
in global
feelings you can easily distinguish the
two because Global feelings tend to be
centered along your midline in the
center of your stomach or chest or
head for example when you get a feeling
that a trait is just right it probably
is centered along your
midline now let's explore the feeling
form of
thinking remember what the seats felt
like in your first
car actually feel the material what's it
like now pretend that your seats are
made out of
sandpaper what's it like to feel
that how about sheep
skin or
leather now pretend that your car seats
are ice
cold notice how cold they feel when you
touch
them now remember a time when the sun
had been shining on your seats for
several hours a very hot
sun and notice what it feels like to
barely touch
them hot
right once again perhaps the feeling
exercise were easy for you or perhaps
they were hard either way those
exercises give you a lot of information
about how you run your
brain think about it how do you run your
brain what have you learned about how
you control your thoughts what was
easier for you seeing hearing or
feeling what manipulations were easiest
for you what have you learned about
yourself next time you listen to this
tape notice that the manipulations will
be even easier for you and that you can
develop more
control control really amounts to having
choices because in any biological or
mechanical system the part in control is
the part with the most
choices for example think about the
queen on a
chessboard
why is the queen in
control because she has more choices as
to where she can
move and if you block some of those
choices by surrounding her with her own
men she loses
control you have a
tremendous amount of choices available
to you in the way you
think exercising those choices will give
you
control but if you block those
choices then you'll be like the queen
surrounded by her
men she has tremendous potential
but the other side of this tape is a
hypnotic exercise to help you understand
even more about how you run your brain
to create specific problems or make
things easy for
yourself because this is a hypnotic
exercise
listen to it only when you can
comfortably relax and close your
eyes the hypnotic exercise is designed
to help you better understand how you
create your own
problems this is a hypnotic exercise so
do not listen to it while driving a car
or operating dangerous Machinery use
this only when you can sit comfortably
by yourself and close your eyes
if you meet those conditions
now then find a comfortable position
sitting in a chair or lying
down be sure that your clothing is
comfortable loosen or remove anything
that might interfere with your
comfort now just
relax uncross your arms or legs if

necessary and just
relax take a deep
breath and slowly let all of the air
out and as you
do breathe out anything that might keep
you from
relaxing
totally
good now take another deep
breath and
again let it
out
relaxing even
more
look around the
room and notice what is directly in
front of
you you might focus on an
object a
wall or perhaps a spot on the wall or
the
ceiling what shape is
it
how big is
it is it bigger than you
are what color is
it is it a warm
color or a cool
color what does it feel like
to
you what is the texture
like is it
rough or
smooth is it as comfortable as you
are is it soft or is it
loud and as you wonder what kind of
sound it
makes or what kind of sound it would
make if it could make a
sound
notice is it
soothing or
not
is there something
notable about the
sound or
not how would
you describe
it as you think
about or at least as part of you thinks
about the sounds and
sights and
feelings notice how useful it is to
think of
ourselves as being
made of
Parts you have body
parts like your arms and
hands and
feet you also have parts of your your
mind such as the roles you play in
life for example at some time in your
life you were probably a
student later in
life you became a bread
winner perhaps you've also
had or still have
or plan to
have the roles of
spouse or
parent those roles might be considered
Parts you play in
life and they also constitute parts of
your
mind
breathe
deeply concentrating on relaxing
totally as you realize that part of
you is also aware of how you
think you do
think so isn't it
natural that part of you should be aware
of
how of
course
today you need to find a part of you
that is willing to accept the
role of understanding
how you produce your trading
problems this may be an ex existing
part that already
knows or it may be a part that you just
invent
now notice the signal that you may be
getting from this
part even
now
become aware of your
body and notice anything
unusual that is going
on perhaps there's a
voice perhaps you're
seeing something different in your
mind or
perhaps you're
experiencing some unusual
feeling this may be a
signal from a part of
you that it is willing to teach
you if you've already
gained new
insights
about how you
think and the part
responsible for helping you gain this
Insight is ideal for this
role if you're getting such a
signal ask the
part that's it's producing
it to intensify the
signal if it means
yes or if it's actually saying
yes then
fine whether you have a part that is
willing to take
over this
function or whether you're going
to create this part
now you need to
know the
qualities that this part will
need to perform its
function as you breathe
deeply relax
fully and think about closing your
eyes or perhaps they are already
closed and as you
notice how comfortable it
feels to close your
eyes listen for any outside
noises and know that these
noises if they are
present just a signal for you to
relax even
more and as you do
so think about the
qualities that you
need to become
aware of how you
create your trading
problems for
example this part needs to
communicate with your unconscious
mind the part of you that is not aware
at any given
moment it needs to be able to
communicate with
you in a
manner you can
understand perhaps by waking up from a
dream as it communicates with your
unconscious
or
perhaps by sending you a clear
signal whenever it
senses some useful
information and as you
relax even
more
realize that this part needs to be

concerned with the process of
thinking not the
content it needs to learn how you
process
information and in
knowing how you process
information
this part also needs to be
aware of all sensory
modalities in how you
think in each of
them now
relax even
more as some part of
you perhaps
an unconscious
part learns to take
on those essential
qualities
now or
perhaps that
part already
knows those
qualities concentrate on your
face and your
neck and make
sure all those muscles are
relaxed make sure your forehead is
relaxed
good and now relax your
mouth and joy
good
notice there are any remaining
Sensations in your
body that might be a
signal from your new
part that is now completely
ready to take on the
function that you have just assigned
it
good think about having a video
camera for your
thinking it has to be a special
camera cuz it must record
pictures and sounds and
feelings and as you think about using
such a
camera think about the wonderful
things that could be
done editing clips of your
thinking for
example
remember the last time you had trouble
in the
market and think about having a record
of your
thinking for several
minutes up to the
point that you produced your
problem you
could study that record and know exact
exactly how you
think and as you think about
that concentrate on your right
arm and make sure that it is
relaxed now relax your left
arm making sure that all the muscles
are
relaxed and
easy
good notice how
pleasant the relaxation
feels and as you do
so think about another
time when you
produced the same same
type of trading
problem think what it would be like to
have a
recording of your
thinking that produced that
problem again you
could study that
record
comparing it with the
other and
understand
exactly how you produce that
problem wouldn't it be
wonderful to have such a
recording and as you think about the
possibilities
relax your
shoulders and your
neck be sure they are totally
comfortable and feel just as if you are
lying on
air that's
right while you enjoy that
feeling remember a third
time when you produce the same sort of
problem and
again think how wonderful it would
be to have a record of your
thinking know exactly how you produce
that problem
wouldn't it be
fantastic to be able to compare all
three
records
and understand the common
elements having done that you have a
total
understanding of how you you do
it and as you think about the impact of
this
information Focus your attention on your
chest notice how
relaxed and easy your breathing
is the
air almost seems
to help your
chest
breathe and as you
concentrate on your chest
area let all your
muscles totally
relax knowing that part of
you is now ready to do its job
and
perhaps it already has those clips of
your thinking and knows exactly how you
produce that trading
problem now relax your
abdomen and pelvic
area notice how warm they
seem as you relax
them notice how present the feelings
are knowing that all your
parts are carrying
out their assigned
task
good relax the muscles in your right leg
and
foot and as you do
so notice how pleasant it feels
to be so totally
relaxed
yes now concentrate on the
muscles in your left leg and
foot and again
notice how pleasant it
feels to be totally
relaxed and to have a new understanding
about
yourself each time you listen to the
tape you will have more information
available to

point about how you produce your trading

consciously aware aware of that
