🔍 The Meridian System and the Scientific Validation of Acupuncture Points

This paragraph delves into the historical and modern understanding of the Meridian system, foundational to acupuncture and acupressure. It discusses the controversy over the existence of the Meridian system and the research validating the effectiveness of acupuncture points over sham points. The paragraph also covers studies that show the physiological impact of EFT on chronic pain and fear reduction, as well as the revival of research into a possible vascular system associated with acupuncture points. The research suggests an 80% correspondence between acupuncture points and the body's connective tissues, indicating a physical basis for the effects of EFT and acupuncture.

10:05

🌟 The Primovascular System: Unveiling the Mechanism Behind Acupuncture and EFT

The final paragraph presents the discovery of the primovascular system, which provides a physical explanation for the effects of acupuncture and EFT. It explains how the primovascular system, identified through tracer dye studies, aligns closely with traditional acupuncture points and the Meridian charts. The paragraph discusses how stimulating these points sends a deactivating signal to the brain's stress center, the amygdala, and how this process is now understood to involve an electrical signal transmitted through the body's connective tissue. It also touches on the implications of this discovery for practitioners and the importance of updating knowledge and understanding of EFT's mechanisms.

Keywords

💡EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques)

EFT, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, is a psychophysiological self-help technique that combines elements of exposure therapy and cognitive therapy with a body-based stress reduction method. It involves tapping on specific points on the body, often referred to as meridian points, to address emotional and psychological issues. In the video, EFT is discussed as a scientifically supported method with over 320 publications and numerous clinical trials showing its effectiveness.

💡Tapping

Tapping, as part of EFT, refers to the physical act of gently striking various acupuncture points on the body with the fingertips. It is believed to help release emotional and physical blockages. The script mentions that EFT involves tapping on acupuncture points, which is a key component of the technique and is supported by research showing its effectiveness in various psychological and physiological outcomes.

💡Meta-analysis

A meta-analysis is a statistical technique used to integrate and summarize the results of multiple studies to provide a more comprehensive understanding of a phenomenon. In the context of the video, it is mentioned that there are over 29 meta-analyses on EFT, indicating a rigorous scientific examination of the technique's efficacy.

💡Randomized Clinical Trials

Randomized clinical trials are a type of scientific experiment that randomly assigns participants to either a treatment or control group to test the efficacy of an intervention. The script highlights that there are over 65 randomized clinical trials on EFT, which is considered a 'gold standard' in research, underscoring the robustness of the evidence supporting EFT.

💡Energy Psychology

Energy Psychology is a field of study that explores the interaction between the body's energy systems and psychological states. EFT is a part of this field, and the video discusses how EFT is the most studied technique within energy psychology, with 99 out of 320 studies showing scientific evidence of its effectiveness.

💡Meridian System

The Meridian System, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, refers to a theoretical framework of channels in the body along which vital energy is said to flow. In the script, it is mentioned that EFT was historically explained by its interaction with this system, suggesting that tapping on acupuncture points could disrupt energy flow and thus influence emotional states.

💡Functional MRI

Functional MRI (fMRI) is a neuroimaging procedure that measures and maps the brain's activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow. The video script discusses fMRI studies that have shown a reduction in brain activity related to food cravings after an EFT program, providing physiological evidence of EFT's effectiveness.

💡Primovascular System

The primovascular system is a recently identified anatomical structure that may be related to the traditional meridian system. The script explains that research has found an 80% correspondence between acupuncture points and the body's connective tissues, suggesting a physical basis for the effects of EFT and acupuncture.

💡Mechanosensory Transduction

Mechanosensory transduction is the process by which mechanical stimuli are converted into electrical signals in the body. The script mentions this term in the context of how tapping on acupuncture points in EFT may be converted into signals that have a physiological impact, such as deactivating the stress response in the brain.

💡Amygdala

The amygdala is an almond-shaped part of the brain involved in the processing of emotions, particularly those related to fear and stress. The video discusses research showing that EFT can send a deactivating signal to the amygdala, which may explain its effectiveness in reducing stress and emotional distress.

💡Memory Reconsolidation

Memory reconsolidation is a theory suggesting that when a memory is retrieved, it becomes temporarily unstable and can be modified. The script touches on this concept as a possible explanation for the long-lasting effects of EFT, suggesting that the technique may alter the way memories are stored and accessed.

I'm associate professor Peter Stapleton

play00:02

from Bond University in Australia and

play00:03

I'd like to share with you the latest

play00:05

EFT emotional Freedom techniques or

play00:08

tapping research and really what's

play00:10

coming out of the research world

play00:12

now tapping or EFT as a

play00:16

psychophysiological technique so one

play00:18

that we use that certainly borrows from

play00:21

other gold standard approaches such as

play00:23

cognitive therapy but with the addition

play00:25

of exposure therapy and a body-based

play00:27

stress reduction technique now has a

play00:30

growing database so more than 320

play00:33

Publications and certainly many of them

play00:36

over 29 in that gold standard approach

play00:39

which could be meta-analysis or

play00:42

systematic review another 65 plus of

play00:45

randomized clinical trials which

play00:48

certainly is a gold standard in the

play00:49

research world and of course many case

play00:52

studies as well as pre and post cohort

play00:55

studies have been emerging in addition

play00:57

to these 320 studies there's over

play01:00

another 100 papers that are actually

play01:02

published in peer-reviewed journals but

play01:04

in non-english journals so they're

play01:07

coming out of countries such as Malaysia

play01:09

Iran Iraq uh South Korea and using

play01:14

variations of EFT that are appropriate

play01:17

to the cultural Community where they're

play01:19

running their research now of the 320

play01:22

studies that have been published in the

play01:24

field of energy psychology of which EFT

play01:27

is the most studied 99 of those studies

play01:31

indeed show the scientific evidence of

play01:34

the technique so we have been collecting

play01:38

and developing the research in this area

play01:40

at a worldwide level and of course here

play01:42

in Australia I lead some of that

play01:44

research not only do we have that

play01:46

building Bank of research that shows EFT

play01:50

actually can get subjective outcomes so

play01:53

when our participants in the trials

play01:55

actually fill out their self-report

play01:57

questionnaires they will describe a

play01:59

reduction in a stress sensation or an

play02:02

improvement in certain symptomology but

play02:05

we actually have biological studies in

play02:08

the area of DNA testing EEG functional

play02:11

MRIS that actually show we profoundly

play02:15

have a physiological impact and this

play02:18

particular webinar is outlining why we

play02:21

know this works today and where we're at

play02:24

with that so energy psychology is both

play02:27

in the top 10 percent of published

play02:30

research for Psychotherapy modalities

play02:33

you might actually know there's over 600

play02:36

types of psychotherapy and energy

play02:38

psychology is in the top 10 percent

play02:40

there

play02:41

but it's always been the question how

play02:43

does this tapping technique work if

play02:46

we're tapping on what's known as an

play02:48

acupuncture point in the body what's the

play02:51

mechanism of change and it's been

play02:53

exciting to watch this field in the last

play02:55

five to ten years grow now historically

play02:58

we've actually had this information

play03:00

available to us and if you're unfamiliar

play03:03

with EFT you might not know it's

play03:05

actually been around for about 50 years

play03:07

so it's certainly been in the research

play03:09

field for the last 20 years but 50 years

play03:12

ago this was actually being taught at

play03:14

workshop level around the world and how

play03:17

it was actually explained was that

play03:19

there's a Meridian system so if you've

play03:22

ever been off to the acupuncturer's

play03:23

office and you've seen those charts of

play03:25

the body that show the lines running

play03:27

through them there was some belief

play03:29

system around that that Meridian system

play03:32

which has all the acupuncture points on

play03:34

it was an energy system and so EFT

play03:38

explained itself as being if we take app

play03:41

on an acupuncture Point instead of using

play03:44

a fine needle then we're doing something

play03:47

to disrupt or interrupt the energy flow

play03:51

in the body and often a TV set with

play03:54

static was often used as the analogy

play03:57

there but we have come a long way we

play04:00

certainly now have brain scan studies

play04:02

there are four brain scan studies two of

play04:05

which I've LED here in Australia that

play04:07

looked at Food craving exposure in that

play04:10

functional MRI and then after a

play04:13

four-week EFT program the signal there

play04:16

looking at those food craving images was

play04:19

completely non-existent the other study

play04:22

that I led here in Australia was in The

play04:24

Chronic pain research that we do know

play04:26

that pain impact in the brain is quite

play04:29

noticeable we know areas such as

play04:32

catastrophizing and magnifying pain can

play04:35

spread when a chronic pain patient has

play04:37

had that pain for a very long time and

play04:40

after a six week week program of EFT

play04:42

those same patients had an appropriate

play04:46

area of the brain that looks like a

play04:49

non-critic pain patient so of course we

play04:52

need pain to be present in the brain if

play04:55

indeed we hurt ourselves so if I kick my

play04:57

toe I'm going to perceive pain but

play04:59

whether or not it actually becomes

play05:01

chronic pain is my ability to actually

play05:04

shift gears there in the brain and be

play05:07

able to not have it be my present front

play05:09

of mind for the next six weeks of my

play05:11

life that pain in my toe so our chronic

play05:14

pain patients six weeks later actually

play05:16

looked like that so it was a fabulous

play05:18

outcome other Studies have been done in

play05:21

terms of fear of flying and certainly

play05:23

looking at images that create very

play05:26

strong Sensations and using tapping to

play05:28

reduce those so

play05:31

five thousand years ago of course you

play05:33

know our Eastern philosophies and the

play05:36

Chinese did have that Meridian system

play05:39

and that was the Forefront of where we

play05:42

are today it is the basis for modern

play05:44

acupressure and acupuncture but an

play05:47

obstacle even to the acupuncture field

play05:50

has always been but does this Meridian

play05:53

system actually exist there have been

play05:56

over 65 studies published in the

play05:59

acupuncture versus sham acupuncture or

play06:02

non-identified Accu points studies that

play06:05

have published that truly show it's the

play06:08

acupuncture points that get the outcomes

play06:11

whether that's for a health benefit or

play06:12

stress reduction or whatever the

play06:14

condition was and we've had that done in

play06:16

the EFT world too so six dismantling

play06:19

studies that used other substitutes

play06:22

instead of tapping on the points that

play06:24

could have been deep breathing it could

play06:26

have been tapping on sham acupuncture

play06:29

points still showed that the traditional

play06:31

recipe of clinical EFT tapping on known

play06:35

acupuncture points was indeed the active

play06:38

uh the active ingredient there so there

play06:41

was a study done in 2017 called the

play06:44

Acupuncture Project that looked at 13

play06:48

000 studies and 122 medical and

play06:52

psychiatric conditions for acupuncture

play06:54

and it actually did show that out of all

play06:58

of those studies 122 only five didn't

play07:01

show any effect and indeed for the other

play07:03

117 acupuncture had the effect that was

play07:06

intended so certainly that research has

play07:09

been growing still brings us back to but

play07:12

how does this work

play07:13

so in the 1960s Professor Kim in Korea

play07:18

at a university appeared to identify

play07:21

some sort of vascular system in the

play07:25

animals that he was working with he was

play07:27

able to stain that vascular system with

play07:30

a tracer die and was able to show there

play07:33

appears to be something physical

play07:35

now other researchers at the time tried

play07:38

to replicate This research but couldn't

play07:40

and so it actually got shelved if you

play07:43

like in the research world and forgotten

play07:46

about a little bit

play07:47

fast forward to

play07:50

2020-21 and researchers decided again in

play07:53

Korea to revive that research and have a

play07:56

look at it again and indeed used human

play07:58

subjects in their research and actually

play08:00

were able to find through ultrasound and

play08:04

80 correspondence between Accu points

play08:08

and the body's connective tissues so

play08:10

there appeared to be something physical

play08:12

there and it was correct about 80

play08:14

according to those charts that you might

play08:16

see if you go off to the acupuncturer's

play08:18

office it suggested there was actually

play08:20

some relationship here between the

play08:22

body's connective tissues acupuncture

play08:25

points and that perhaps there was some

play08:27

mechanism there that was able to carry a

play08:31

signal when that acupuncture point was

play08:33

actually either tapped or a needle was

play08:37

actually placed into it so in 2021

play08:39

Tracer dies were able to be used to

play08:42

inject into that system that vascular

play08:46

system that they had identified died and

play08:48

found that the alignment of the

play08:51

acupuncture points according to the

play08:52

Meridian charts was incredibly close and

play08:55

it didn't support that this Meridian

play08:58

system was indeed a physical vascular

play09:01

system or a concrete duct system now I

play09:05

do have in this webinar some slides

play09:07

coming up from surgery where they're

play09:10

able to stain these vascular systems and

play09:13

show you so if whatever reason you're a

play09:15

little bit squirmish I'll let you know

play09:17

when to open your eyes so you can

play09:19

actually see through a range of these

play09:21

different slides that are published in

play09:24

the peer-reviewed journals that they

play09:27

indeed show that it's quite a minute

play09:29

system and when you inject it with dye

play09:32

you can actually see the coagulation

play09:36

around a known vascular point an Accu

play09:39

point an acupuncture point so you can

play09:41

actually see that it's often a little

play09:43

bit bigger along that meridian line so

play09:47

we have actually now got an underlying

play09:49

mechanism for why Harvard University

play09:52

some years ago intent in a 10-year study

play09:56

showed that tapping putting a needle

play09:59

into an acupuncture Point sends a

play10:01

deactivating signal to the amygdala that

play10:04

known Stress Center in the brain so they

play10:06

showed that through a multitude of

play10:08

different brain scanning studies and

play10:10

said there is indeed something happening

play10:12

here but we now know there's a reason so

play10:16

all of that primovascular system as it's

play10:20

now termed is running through the body

play10:22

and indeed up into the brain so by

play10:25

stimulating a known acupuncture point

play10:27

you indeed are actually having a

play10:29

physiological effect on the body so the

play10:33

mechanism of actually putting a needle

play10:34

in or indeed tapping is actually being

play10:38

converted into an electrical signal

play10:41

mecho sensory transduction is the phrase

play10:45

that's actually used there when we focus

play10:47

focus our mind on what we're saying that

play10:50

we're trying to reduce in tapping so

play10:52

when we're being truthful to ourselves

play10:53

and saying I feel stressed while I do my

play10:55

tapping then that tapping signal is

play10:58

converted into that physical electrical

play11:02

signal that's able to then be

play11:04

transmitted and collagen is suggested to

play11:07

be the transmitter along that

play11:09

primovascular system so we actually now

play11:12

have a much greater understanding well

play11:15

and truly beyond what when 20 years ago

play11:17

I became involved in the research in

play11:19

this field that really is telling us

play11:21

what's actually happening here when we

play11:24

do tapping or indeed have acupuncture

play11:26

and why we're actually getting some sort

play11:29

of outcome not only in self-report

play11:32

psychological symptoms but indeed

play11:34

physical symptoms at that biochemistry

play11:37

level so we know that the amygdala is

play11:40

able to respond certainly things like

play11:42

the hippocampus the memory Center in the

play11:44

brain is able to respond as well we know

play11:47

through comparison studies to Gold

play11:49

Standard therapy such as cognitive

play11:51

behavioral therapy and indeed things

play11:53

like EMDR the eye movement

play11:55

desensitization reprocessing therapy

play11:58

that their EFT is comparable it is often

play12:01

able to achieve the same outcomes but in

play12:04

half the time and some of that is now

play12:07

attributed to the fact that we are

play12:09

physically and very quickly sending a

play12:12

signal back to the brain

play12:14

what does this mean for you certainly I

play12:17

would learn more about this I would walk

play12:20

away knowing that it's not about

play12:22

shifting energy in the body that is a

play12:25

very outdated understanding of EFT if

play12:29

you're a practitioner and certainly

play12:31

using EFT you're curious about it and

play12:34

you share information about how it works

play12:37

I would update that knowledge to include

play12:39

this type of thing the primovascular

play12:42

system and the research that goes with

play12:44

it and certainly if anything is

play12:46

reflected on your website I would

play12:48

absolutely update that as well so I hope

play12:51

this has given you a greater

play12:52

understanding of what's actually

play12:54

happening now in EFT we certainly have

play12:58

other understanding of why it lasts so

play13:00

long over time and memory

play13:02

reconsolidation as a theory has actually

play13:05

explained some of that for us so I hope

play13:08

that this has added something perhaps

play13:10

been of interest and that maybe you'll

play13:12

want to learn a little bit more a about

play13:14

EFT and the primovascular system and

play13:17

just the positive impacts it may be able

play13:19

to do for you or your clients
