Transcripts

play00:00

AEW threatened that their stars are leaving. A backstage incident after Dynamite.

play00:05

A WWE name let go and more… I’m Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.

play00:16

There’s been lots of specially themed  episodes of AEW Dynamite in the past.

play00:20

We’ve had St Patrick’s Day Slam, Road  Rager and, my favourite, Quake By the Lake.

play00:27

But now there’s a new piece of  branding in town: Travel Mayhem.

play00:33

AEW CEO Tony Khan posted before the Wednesday  7th episode that because of flight cancellations,

play00:39

several AEW wrestlers were  struggling to get to the show.

play00:42

“I've held back other announcements anticipating  travel mayhem + will change accordingly!”

play00:48

This mainly affected the already announced  rematch of the Conglomeration vs Rush,

play00:52

the Beast Mortos and Roderick Strong  - as the Conglomeration’s Mark Briscoe

play00:56

and Kyle O’Reilly couldn’t make it in time. I like imagine to Mark Briscoe in a Delaware

play01:00

airport still cutting an 18 hour  long continuous promo on Delta.

play01:04

Instead, Cassidy teamed with FTR to win  the match. They’re from North Carolina,

play01:09

where the show was held, so travel  mayhem wasn’t so much of a concern.

play01:13

There’s no word on what other  matches were affected by the issues.

play01:16

But the backstage issues weren’t done there,

play01:19

as quickly after the end of Dynamite,  AEW’s official X account posted:

play01:23

“There was incident involving #HangmanPage  & @RealJeffJarrett, video to come.”

play01:28

Don’t play with my PTSD over  backstage incidents in AEW, AEW!

play01:33

Thankfully, the incident was kayfabe, where  Hangman Page brawled with Jeff Jarrett in a

play01:37

post-show interview, and Mariah May and  Toni Storm, who hadn’t been seen since

play01:40

their in-ring pull apart brawl about an hour  earlier, also just entered the shot fighting.

play01:45

Tony himself tweeted: “It was right by  my chair as we wrapped up #AEWDynamite.”

play01:49

There is currently no word on  how many monitors fell on him.

play01:52

With Hangman not having a direction for All  In, it’s speculated he could be facing Jarrett

play01:56

at the show following this angle. It’s been previously reported that

play01:59

AEW Originals Penta and Rey Fenix are set to  leave the company once their contracts expire.

play02:04

Fightful Select have now confirmed there have been  discussions in WWE about bringing them both in.

play02:10

Apparently Penta and Fenix, who are real life  lucha bros, want to be a package deal - so come

play02:14

in together as a tag team - and they want  to go straight to the main roster, not to

play02:18

start in NXT. This might be because Penta is 40,  and is eager to be on either Raw or SmackDown.

play02:26

One source close to them said both might appear  in Orlando soon than later to prepare for the

play02:32

defection, and that Penta’s contract expires  this month, while Fenix’s is up in September.

play02:37

AEW did want to re-sign them both, but the  brothers kept delaying those conversations

play02:42

and recently filed for trademarks on  their ring names and catch phrases.

play02:46

And this is where the scourge  of AEW comes in… Konnan.

play02:51

Despite being used by AEW in their first  few years, Konnan seemingly fell out with

play02:56

Tony Khan and started criticising the  booking on his podcast. Since then,

play03:00

AEW has favoured CMLL over Mexico’s other  main promotion, AAA, which Konnan books.

play03:05

Back in June, Konnan warned Khan that “what goes  around comes around”, and to “have your little fun

play03:11

while you can”. He has now posted: “What comes around goes around 2”

play03:16

Konnan has been a mentor to Penta and Fenix,  and he might have had their ear on leaving AEW.

play03:21

How do you want to see the Lucha Bros debut in  WWE? Let me know in the comments down below,

play03:25

where I’ll be replying to people FROM OUTTA  NOWHERE SAYING IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE PENTA.

play03:31

Sometimes people leave WWE these days  too. It’s just not often their own choice.

play03:36

PWInsider is reporting that WWE’s Vice President  of Talent Relations Operations Kristin Altman

play03:42

was let go by the company this week. Altman has been with WWE since 2007,

play03:47

and is the 40th known name released by the  company this year - with over half of them

play03:51

from executive positions, following the corporate  merger between WWE and the UFC last September.

play03:57

Our latest episode of Video Game Club is now  live - with us playing SpiderHeck. Here’s a clip.

play04:13

Go watch us play Spiderheck  on CTRL Freaks right after…

play04:47

My review of AEW Dynamite Travel  Mayhem… in about 5 minutes.

play04:53

I’m pretty sure now that Dynamite’s  opening theme is actually MJF’s.

play04:56

He opened the show for the fourth week  in a row, taking on Kyle Fletcher,

play04:59

with Don Callis on commentary, and Kyle’s  best friend and MJF’s All In opponent Will

play05:03

Ospreay watching from backstage - who we later  found out was barricaded in his locker room,

play05:08

so he couldn’t stop a post-match beatdown. MJF played his typically excellent old school heel

play05:13

- stalling, getting cocky after one move, being  an American hero - for the might of Australia

play05:19

Fletcher to get a sudden babyface comeback. Fletcher looked so good near the end of the

play05:23

match, I bought into not just one, but two near  falls - a reverse pin off MJF’s Panama Sunrise,

play05:29

and the second off a Tombstone. But what’s with the Don Callis Family

play05:33

all finding their morality as of late? Don chucked  Fletcher a screwdriver to beat MJF with - which

play05:38

isn’t that heelish considering how MJF cheats  with weapons to win the majority of his matches,

play05:43

like against Kyle’s own best mate Ospreay -  but Kyle couldn’t bring himself to use it.

play05:48

I wouldn’t have minded him going for it, out of  justified vengeance for how Max took Will’s title,

play05:53

for MJF to dodge it and cheat to win by himself. Instead, MJF won clean after Fletcher threw the

play05:59

screwdriver away, pushed down the referee, and  then bloodied Kyle with the diamond ring. Ospreay

play06:04

made it down just in time to save Fletcher from  a Tiger Driver, smartly wearing a white t-shirt

play06:08

to get Kyle’s blood all over his chest, looking  like me after eating a double Big Mac at 1am.

play06:13

Mariah May then beat Viva Van with a series  of Toni Storm’s moves, which set up a really

play06:17

cool post-match angle. May unwrapped a present,  which was a picture of Toni and Mariah hugging.

play06:22

She laughed, but didn’t realise what’s  written on the back: The Mariah, The.

play06:31

Toni made a surprise attack, and  the referees pulled them apart.

play06:34

We got a character vignette getting over  Jack Perry’s edgy, psychotic personality,

play06:38

showing him smashing in old TV with AEW clips on  with an axe. Which was somewhat undermined by the

play06:44

broadcast cutting to a Taco Bell commercial.  Because, combined with Perry’s last line,

play06:49

it made him seem like he was willing to  sacrifice… a beefy five layer burrito.

play06:55

The Learning Tree attacked Shibata  after he had beaten Bryan Keith,

play06:58

which was all a set up for the return of Hook! I’m glad Hook and Shibata is back, but my god,

play07:02

I am yet again feeling the crushing stagnation  of the Chris Jericho midcard vortex!

play07:08

Renee interviewed Hangman Page  backstage, who’s still really

play07:10

fixated on Swerve Strickland. Try the Headspace  app, Hangman. You gotta let go of this rage.

play07:15

Speaking of, Strickland had a sit down interview  with JR to build his All In match against Bryan

play07:19

Danielson. Using JR in this way really helps  elevate the already historic stakes for their

play07:24

feud, as Swerve claimed he doesn’t care  about ending a father, and when he beats

play07:28

Danielson, his legacy will belong to him. Due to travel issues, Orange Cassidy had to

play07:33

team with North Caroliiiiiina’s own FTR against  Roderick Strong, Rush and The Beast Mortos.

play07:38

It meant we got more of an FTR style match,  than the crazy six man spots we’ve had in

play07:43

previous weeks. It was still really  enjoyable, and you can’t blame anyone

play07:46

for the travel issues, it was just different. The heels lost this time after Rush got in

play07:50

what appeared to be a legit strike exchange  with Dax and Cash - it’s still real to him,

play07:54

dammit - so FTR hit a Big Rig on him to win. The Acclaimed came down, demanding that tag

play07:58

title shot they won almost two months  ago - fair - but they brawled with FTR.

play08:03

I’m struggling to get into this feud without  the actual tag team champions being involved.

play08:07

Christian revealed it’ll be the House of Black  vs the Bang Bang Gang on Collision to determine

play08:11

the Patriarchy’s trios titles challengers at All  In, for which he’ll be the special guest referee.

play08:17

A very fun wrinkle, but not as fun as how  Killswitch doesn’t get to hold his own trios title

play08:22

belt in these segments, it’s given to Shayna. We got a character vignette for Hologram,

play08:26

aka teenage Tony Khan’s cool create a wrestler  character on No Mercy. Zoom, whip, whip.

play08:33

How do you escalate The Brickhouse  Kamille’s simple squash match from last

play08:36

week? You have The Brickhouse Kamille  squashing two enhancement talents!

play08:41

Mercedes cut a promo afterwards, reminding us  how Britt was suspended by the EVPs. Way to

play08:45

work yourself into a shoot, sister, much love, HH  x. But then Tony Schiavone revealed Tony Khan has

play08:50

actually lifted that suspension… I’m really lost  on what AEW’s management organigram is… and Britt

play08:57

Baker… is not here tonight. She’s via satellite. For this week, at least, I felt as though the

play09:05

backstage rumours of Britt and  MJF’s fallout has sapped some of

play09:08

my enjoyment rooting for the babyface. It was announced that Claudio will take

play09:11

on Okada for the Continental Championship next  week, after Claudio won a three way on Collision.

play09:16

And the main event saw Bryan Danielson  take on Jeff Jarrett - which got started

play09:19

right away when Jarrett whacked a guitar  over Danielson’s back during his entrance.

play09:23

Both men perfectly told the story of the  veteran who wants the other wrestler to

play09:27

be the best he can be, by beating the crap  out of him. Jarrett loves you, Danielson.

play09:32

That’s why he’s suplexing you onto a bin. Making me feel like I was watching TNA from

play09:36

15 years ago, Jarrett immediately brawled into  the crowd and had a fun fight on the concourse.

play09:41

They traded weapon shots and submissions, but  Danielson won with a running knee with a chair.

play09:46

The two men embraced afterwards,  and special guest Ricky Steamboat,

play09:49

not special guest referee Ricky Steamboat, you  can tell because he had neither a referee shirt,

play09:53

a body cam or a bracelet, raised both their hands. Swerve came down afterwards, toeing just the right

play09:59

line of tweener, again promising to  take Danielson’s legacy. Next week,

play10:03

he’s going to take on Wheeler Yuta, to show  Danielson why he’s the most dangerous man in AEW.

play10:11

Aka, Yuta’s gonna bleed a lot. There wasn’t anything bad on this show,

play10:16

but it did feel like a bit of a filler  episode. This week’s Dynamite is 72%.
