Alabama enjoy the 3-day deep sea fishing
rodeo yeah people in Arkansas ring in
the New Year by dropping a fake gold
painted pig instead of a ball in
Southern California people in San coli
love to partake in the annual office
chair races every fourth of July but as
Leslie Marine shows us city leaders are
trying to squash it this year saying
it's gotten too out of control have fun

[Applause]
office chairs bikes and even sofas on
Wheels speed down the streets of s
cleme while chaotic the office chair
races have become a Fourth of July
tradition here hundreds of people line
two streets in the city as chairs Race
by so many water balloons so many people
you
won't water balloon fights break out
everywhere it felt really American it's
always been a lot of fun but despite all
the fun this year the city is Banning
the event it definitely got a little
crazy just in terms of safety but I
still think it was fun little bit of a
disappointment cuz it was kind of a
tradition that it's been going on for
years but I also understand that it got
real destructive last year Tim hery has
watched the races since it started more
than a decade ago but last year someone
damaged his home we had a different
garage store that had windows in it that
got broken um I believe next door some
of their Windows got broken and then you
had someone do donuts yeah then somebody
ripped up my lawn with their car that
was nice city leaders say last year more
than 7,000 people attended the event
that is not permitted by the city they
claim it was a hazard for police and
firefighters who had trouble getting to
people who were hurt and a lot of trash
was left behind in light of that um
we've heard kind of an outcry from the
neighbors and the residents that live in
that area that they want their street
back there was people with like
paintball guns and frozen water balloons
and know we've got kids and Pregnant M
and while some residents are relieved
the city is now stepping in even with
damage to his home Tim hery was looking
forward to this year's office chair
races I don't know if it could have been
monitored and not necessarily shut down
the city is now planning their own
familyfriendly event and while most
residents we spoke to say they will
attend for others it's simply not the
same as this wacky tradition it's been
happening for 15 20 years and you know
brings a lot of our neighbors and
Community
together I'm sure everyone at that event
was Stone sober well one of those yeah
um I'd hate to be on the cleanup crew I
mean always always that's never fun me
think of the you seen the the wheel of
cheese race in England no where wheel of
cheese bounces and people just rock it
down this hill after it and Tumble and
it's filled with rocks and bad things
happen bad things happen we have bring
your own big wheel in petero Hill which
is always really cool yeah I think if
you just conf find the vehicle like make
it actually office chairs and that would
kind of that probably wouldn't be as fun
your office chair doesn't look like that
um well not yet afterm when everyone
leaves thanks for watching you can
