The conversation highlights the importance of handwriting analysis in understanding a person's mental state and emotions, especially when they have difficulty communicating verbally. The 'soldering' technique in handwriting is identified as a sign of aggression and rumination over emotions. The script also mentions the significance of the lowercase 'I' as an indicator of low self-esteem and the concept of overstepping the 'line of society' in graphology, which can suggest a tendency to break laws or societal norms. The analysis is applied to the character of the Joker, with the actor Joaquin Phoenix's ambidextrous writing discussed as a method to portray the character's disturbed state.
🃏 The Joker's Handwriting and its Symbolism
This paragraph delves deeper into the handwriting of the Joker character from the Batman franchise. The analysis points out extreme 'soldering', which is seen as a destructive and ruminative writing style, indicative of the character's intent to destroy the world to communicate his message. The handwriting's size variations and pressure are discussed as potential signs of health issues, aligning with the character's portrayal in the comics and older films. Transcripts
okay hello today we're filming with Liam
we're gonna look at superhero
handwriting we're not superhero super
villain handwriting yeah I made us a
slideshow so that we can all look at it
together I love superheroes and super
villains but I feel like this is your
area of expertise
um yeah I am the residential house nerd
[Music]
I'm excited to yeah go through what you
what you have yeah we're specifically
looking at two different movies that I
think they show handwriting to tell the
story starting with the joker or Joker
did you like this movie love this movie
you loved it yeah I love this one oh
really yeah I saw this like yeah
really did something that I think a lot
of DC fans and a lot of my friends
really wanted to see which was this
separated Joker this Joker that's kind
of away from the rest of the DC Universe
I thought it was kind of overhyped but
no it was still pretty good
do you remember the scene at all yeah so
this is really in the opening of the
movie this is again his therapist is
he's he's in like the institution of
what they're calling Arkham asylums
they're losing funding and his therapist
is like showing your book that's really
interesting actually you said that
they're losing funding so they're so
he's probably running out of sessions
left I feel like I've talked about this
before but I read this journal called um
analyzing children's handwriting
something I read in it was it's a great
tool for therapists with limited
sessions with people to look at
someone's drawings and learn how to
analyze drawings and I suppose you could
apply that same principle to handwriting
of like especially if you're working
with someone that has a hard time
communicating what their problems are as
like someone who's trying to help them
trying to understand just a little bit
about where they're coming from if they
don't know how to communicate that
trauma or that experience I'll just talk
about a few things that are happening in
this handwriting the first thing that
steps out steps out stands out to you is
like the soldering what's soldering
means in handwriting is like you go over
your line so like you're retracing all
of your lines kind of like you're like
soldering metal together I think that's
where the term comes from you're going
over everything you have to say it's a
very like aggressive way to write I
solder when I want to like make
thank you
[Music]
edgy and angsty like I'll retrace a lot
it's because you're like ruminating over
these emotions right you're like going
over what you have to say you're going
over what you have to say over and over
again and that's kind of like what's
going on in your brain I'm seeing like
the lowercase personal pronoun I which
indicates uh low self-esteem I I don't
see it anywhere else in the handwriting
and then the the main thing about this
handwriting is overstepping the red line
this is something that most people won't
really notice but as a handwriting
analyst you kind of look at how someone
treats the page and how someone treats
the margins because how you treat the
page is how you treat the world and the
red line is actually in graphology it's
called the line of society called the
line of society because you're not
supposed to overstep it it's more often
for people who overstep this line to
engage in like
no no like break laws oh that's pretty
on brand for Joker
move down to this one this is an
interesting handwriting to me do you
have any thoughts on this handwriting
when you scratch out it's a big
indicator of now like oh [ __ ] I made
this mistake yeah and frustration
frustration that you you you're eating
for sure in that place and the little
face in the dump
s that's hilarious I love it it's
hilarious you like it yeah so let's talk
about this handwriting what I'm gonna
talk about specifically in this one is I
especially see it here all his words are
sinking below the bass line here's the
blue line of the page but his words are
like going down there like sinking so
this is the line of society the blue
lines those are the lines of reality so
if someone's kind of floating Above It
it means they're really imaginative they
have a hard time being grounded or
keeping their feet on the grounds but if
they're like sinking below the Baseline
um especially if it's consistent it's
consistent for at least two paragraphs
then it kind of goes away but I'm just
gonna imagine like what if this were
consistent this person is just like
sinking to a very like dark place and
also just disregarding the lines of the
page as well like this person he's
trying to follow the lines on the page
right but let's imagine that he were
disregarding the lines of the page those
type of people are the types of people
that really like make their own rules
for Better or For Worse you the art
Department did this or do you think what
came I think this is joaquin's
handwriting with his right hand and this
is joaquin's handwriting with his left
hand this is disguised handwriting
that's that was the next point that I
was going to talk about actually it's
like when I'm not playing that I'll tell
you why because when you look at these
forms it's not very tremored there's not
too many like huge pressure variations
or huge size variations there's nothing
particularly wrong with this handwriting
versus here is where the forms start to
get a little shaky there are some angles
where they're not supposed to be there's
some like huge size variations the
pattern is still the same so it's not
like this is a different writer and then
I see oh he's writing with his left
hands then that's another clue of I'm
like okay what if he just switched hands
and I actually looked it up after I made
that hypothesis yeah it's true that
Joaquin Phoenix is ambidextrous when he
was on camera he did write with his left
hand personally I think he just did that
to give his handwriting a more just
Disturbed form this article said oh
research suggests that left-handed
people are more likely to be mentally
ill I don't know about that but I think
he probably just did that because he
wanted to be able to write on camera and
authentically wanted to like genuinely
have a struggle yeah I I that's what I
think he did I I don't know we don't
have lucky Phoenix here with us
we try to make it work
but I'll talk about the smiley face
smiley faces everything about
handwriting is subconscious because
you're not trying to write write letters
you're trying to write sentences right
you're trying to communicate ideas and
thoughts but when you write a smiley
face your intention is to write a smiley
face it's not subconscious it's
intentional doesn't mean it's not
genuine if like you get a card from your
mom it has a smiley face on it but it
does mean that it was put there
intentionally oftentimes it's more of a
like everything's fine don't worry about
me or like someone will say something
that could be interpreted aggressively
but they put a smiley face so the other
person know like no I don't mean any
harm smiley faces aren't fake but they
are done for a specific reason next
movie we're going to talk about is the
Batman so Batman do you like this movie
yeah yeah we both really we both really
like this movie Great Performances all
around great Direction really exciting
story and really exciting handwriting
this handwriting from The Joker like I
was I was able to crack it I was like
okay I was like had a much harder time
like cracking the Batman's handwriting
but this handwriting that they have in
the Batman it's really really good they
took the time to understand like okay
stylistically what do we want the
handwriting to look like but also what
is realistic for the handwriting to look
like you can't even match the characters
yeah here we have an even better example
of soldering in my opinion this type of
soldering also demonstrates how
destructive soldering is so like not
only is it a ruminating way to write
where like you're just going over the
same thoughts over and over and over
again and just like tearing yourself
apart that way but you kind of see when
you zoom in the page is buckling oh yeah
if you
torn as I said before like how you treat
the page is how you treat the world if
you are etching your message into
something so aggressively that you are
ripping the fabric of what you are
trying to communicate on this indicates
someone who's gonna destroy the world to
get their message across which is
exactly who this character is other
things is like the extreme size
variation especially like variation in
pressure like you see how sometimes it's
really really strong and then sometimes
it's really thin huge pressure
variations indicate health problems
because like even if you try at home to
write with like really varying pressure
strong and then sometimes it gets softer
you feel like physically ill so you know
that if this is how a person normally
writes it's like this person is this
person is unwell his character through
the comics is character through like
even older Batman films Jim Carrey was
the last time we saw Riddler on screen
like this yeah he was just a complete
loophole he's just like yeah they took a
really grounded approach and compared
him to the very real serial killer the
Zodiac that you have a video I have a
video about so I felt pretty confident
going into this one is is that kind of
sick copping off of an old serial killer
I don't know there's a difference
between what they've done with like say
the new donor show you're taking
something that like everyone does know
and yeah there was a real serial killer
the Zodiac Killer you're taking that as
a reference but you're not you're not
telling his story you're not yeah
pushing what what happened in his world
you're kind of using that to ground your
really out of this world character into
something yeah it is different so I
appreciate them and how they handled uh
that I thought that was really good I'll
talk quickly about the symbol that he
chooses to represent yourself very
similar to the zodiac symbol so the
symbol you choose to represent yourself
it's kind of like a signature in that
way it's not necessarily who you are but
it's who you want Society to know you as
the zodiac symbol is a Crosshair it's a
symbol of death a symbol of targeting
any sort of exformation in graphology
indicates death endings thoughts of
martyrdom these sort of thoughts so if
you notice like someone's signature with
like a lot of x's in it it's like you
know that death is on this person's mind
and it can be for for reasons that are
very normal like maybe this person is
like going through grief just means that
death is really on this person's mind
and it's like this is the symbol you
choose to represent yourself as that's
scary you want to be known as deaf what
are these alien Predator like I don't
really know what these markings are it
looks kind of like a cipher yeah there
were there were a couple different
Cyprus you used in the movie and the
Zodiac use side diapers as well he also
communicated in cards in the movie which
is crazy because the Zodiac also
Community communicated in cards yeah
those are words yeah he's saying ring
ring ring ring ring oh whoa oh all of
it's soldered so you're ruinating you're
thinking about the same thing over and
over again you're writing the same thing
over and over again on an entire card
this is someone that is severely unwell
and then I'll just say like this heavy
underlining
um especially on a downward angle it's
just like another indicator of
aggression and just yeah I think Dylan
was asking like okay what are all these
things but first it lets you know that
this dude can't make curves the nature
of making an angle it's like you go One
Direction you stop you go the other
direction you stop you go the other
direction you stop that's it fashion
just another indicator of this dude's
aggression but also what's crazy is like
these are decorative even when he's
trying to make something beautiful and
pretty he still has that aggressive
nature in him well I think he sees
violence as Beauty as well that was
poetic that's terrifying then I'm gonna
talk about Bruce Wayne um this is not a
great picture of his handwriting but
takes up the entire page with like no
margins when you see his personal
Journal he takes up the entire page but
the interesting thing is his handwriting
is like never compromised like it never
like squishes at the end to fit so when
you take up the entire page how you
treat your margins like it is how you
treat the world but it's also how you
treat your time and resources so if
you're like squishing all this stuff at
the end of the page you might have a
have a problem with time management with
money spending like it means you don't
really know how to use up your resources
but he's filling up the entire page
meaning he uses up all of his resources
that is never compromised he's never
compromising what he wants to do it's
just like go out at night like a big bat
and assault people and he can do that
using everything that he has available
and he's just such an all-in type person
and this handwriting like really
reflected that you see these super long
t-bars as well which also indicates just
like drive and just like giving all of
your energy into your goals and the
compressed middle zones compress smaller
middle zones means you know you're
you're less of a social butterfly I
wanted to be persuaded I wanted to just
be moody like
something and this is the last
handwriting that we have today this is
from Riddler's diary it was really
exciting for me to watch in the movie
because it starts on this page I think
and I'm like okay that's pretty worried
and then they flip the page to this page
and I'm like oh and then they flip the
to this page and I'm like
I don't know it was just a really
exciting Arc for me to watch too of like
handwriting that goes bad to worse
really good and this this isn't a font
as far as I know like they had someone
do this they had someone write like this
extreme tangling indicates like extreme
confusion of thought this is just like
otherworldly she's not going over the
page and like rereading what he's saying
obviously you can't really reread
anything so it's almost like he's this
more indicating of like a um like a drum
trip or a drug trip or psychological
breakdown with drum trips you usually
notice like more inconsistent spacing
this the spacing doesn't change in the
size barely changes the only thing that
really changes is the amount of words
and the amount of soldering because when
you're drunk or when you're on some sort
of drugs it's like kind of known as
these like inconsistent spacing and that
happens because you kind of go in and
out of focus so you're going in and out
of focus but your hand is still moving
across the page if we're going back to
the principle of like how you treat the
pages how you treat the world it's like
he's just wrecking the world again on
brand because is at the end of the movie
he spoiler alert floods the entire city
of Gotham wait that's crazy he floods
the whole city yeah because he's
flooding the page yeah which is really
cool because that is this is if you kind
of look at this right here it's like a
three-act structure for how his kind of
story it's it starts oh that's so true
plotting in the First Act where we first
meet him and as the movie kind of goes
on I met a lot of anger there's like
some all caps there's some underlining
there's some resentfulness I want to
turn it over to Liam because we're
talking about a project that's really
important
all right imagine okay
