Highlights
CCA Trio features three 8 mm dynamic drivers in a three-way configuration, with one driver for sub-bass and bass, one for bass and mids, and one for mids and highs.
The shell design of CCA Trio is similar to other IEMs like Rhapsodio City and CTER, with a semi-open back plate and a slightly different faceplate design.
Fit and build quality of CCA Trio are more than satisfactory, especially considering its $30 price point.
CCA Trio's physical aspect has a nice weight and feel, and looks business-like and special.
Comparison with other IEMs like Caster, RSiD, and Neo Pon highlights the differences in tuning and driver configurations.
CCA Trio's sound signature can be adjusted using switches, with the all-switches-up position providing the best balance for the reviewer.
Rhapsodio City offers a three-way setup with a focus on bass and mids, similar to Trio but with a more detailed and polished sound.
RT-1 has three dynamic drivers and is praised for its impressive tuning and construction.
The Isn Neo3, with two 6mm drivers and a 5.8mm planar, is positioned as an upgrade to the Trio, offering increased polish and maturity.
The disparity in prices among the IEMs discussed is highlighted, with the Isn Neo3 being significantly more expensive than the others.
The reviewer emphasizes the importance of personal preference in choosing between all-DD sound (Trio) and a mix of dynamic and balanced armature drivers (Rapsody City).
Technical aspects of the Trio are considered adequate for its price, with the reviewer noting that expectations should be managed at this price point.
Comparison with the R1 shows that while the Trio offers a more forgiving sound signature, the R1 provides a more polished performance.
The reviewer suggests that the Trio's performance is excellent for its price, and it can stand out against more expensive IEMs in certain genres like EDM and pop.
The Isn Neo3's performance is sensitive to the source and cables used, unlike the Trio and R1, which are more forgiving and consistent.
The reviewer concludes that the Trio is a well-executed IEM that fits well within the lineup of competent IEMs launched by KZ and CCA.
Graphs of the Trio's frequency response in different switch configurations are presented, showing the impact on bass, mids, and treble.
Comparison graphs with other IEMs like the Caster, R1, and Isn Neo3 illustrate the differences in sound signature and balance.
Transcripts
hi guys and welcome to my review of the
CCA Trio this is the latest on CCA a
three Dynamic driver this time around uh
three uh 8 mm drivers uh in a three-way
configuration so one driver is being
used for let's say more subbase and base
applications the second one is being
used for base and mids and then the
third one is being used for mids in
highs so up and mids in Highs at least
that's the information I was able to um
gather from
CCA uh the shell is basically the the
same shell that we've
seen uh already before in some of the
other IMS in terms of the design and
everything it looks very similar to the
raps City looks very similar to the cter
it's got that kind of vibe obviously
with a slightly different um face plate
design uh semiopen uh back plate as well
uh you can see the the drivers well you
can see one of the drivers inside and
you can see a a black support which
holds the other two drivers as well
um fit is the usual CCA uh KZ uh
philosophy I mean no issues with the fit
it's you know more than more than more
than uh satisfactory uh the build
quality as well more than satisfactory
mean especially when you consider this
is $30 you know you you have to question
yourself how do they do it uh and if
they are able to do it why don't other
brands do it as well why do we sometimes
have to P the absurds amounts of money
for certain IMs I can understand uh some
of them uh that the money is been
invested in certain aspects okay but a
lot of IMS in my opinion in my humble
opinion are terribly
overpriced um you know the I just I just
don't understand it sometimes anyway but
that's that's irrelevant that's a little
minor rent of money uh I'm not showing
you the the the accessories and the
package that comes with it in terms of
tips and and cables cuz I just never use
it um I am using KB hero 7s uh I've got
the yellow ones here but I also used the
07 the mid one the midsized ones like I
have on the rap city here
um look the difference is very minor
between the two tips um I would say it's
50/50 so you know I I could have had
either one on here I would be happy with
it okay um
anyway this is the the the actual
physical as aspect of it doesn't you
know it's it's got a nice weight to it
it's got a nice feel to it it it looks
it looks the part it looks the business
and that's the main thing uh you know I
guess
uh well not the main thing main thing
main thing but one of the main things
it's got to look uh it's got to looks
it's got to look special let's put it
that way and KY always manages to KZ and
CCA always manage to um uh tick that box
um I've got your the Caster okay I've
got your rapity I've got your the rtr1
and I've got your the panon um Neo Pon
sorry the Isn neo3 um so a wide variety
here of IMS the caster and the rsid are
here because uh well this is two coax
mounted drivers I could have had here as
well the um the um CCA Duo but the CCA
Duo's tuning is very different to these
two offerings here uh as the same thing
applies with the the CCI Caster the
Harmon Edition the tuning was so
different it just made no point in
having it so I've opted here for the
Caster the um the base version uh the
the settings that I'm using on the on
the switches is um 0011 for the
Caster there you go uh as that is the
setting that at least for me satisfies
me the most gives me the the best
balance uh you know it's just a setting
that works for me period I'm using the
foam tips as opposed to the to the um KB
ears the silicons because with the foam
tips with these complies I actually get
um
just it smoothens out slightly the upper
mids and trible on the caster which can
sometimes just be a little bit too much
I've got a a modified Caster as well
which is actually this one here which uh
I've added a a I've put a 450 filter on
the on the actual uh nozzle and and that
uh does allow then for the silicone tip
to be used although I've got this one
here as well with the with the uh Foams
but that one does allow then for the uh
silicone tips to be used and and um
obtain that smoothness so uh that I I'm
looking for
the the uh rep City I think uh right now
you can get it for
$35 uh I think it's one of the best IMS
honestly uh that KZ has made this the
as24 even the as16 pro but the
as24 um you
know the the the the zvx uh there are a
few IMS the pr1 pro there are a few IMS
that KZ and CCA have made have launched
that are really really stand out and the
Reps definitely is one of them and again
the philosophy has been a three-way
setup one one of the of the two 8 mm
drivers is being mainly focused on the
on the base on the subbase and the
the second one on the on the on the mid
on the base and on the mids and then
it's got four Bas helping out then in
the in the higher frequencies and in the
IDS uh and in essence the philosophy is
very similar here as well uh but there
is differences yeah that you do notice
on the um Raper over the the trio um the
um the rtr1 uh three drivers as well
three Dynamic drivers and eight and two
sixes uh
um once again one of
the most uh impressive IMS I've
heard uh over the last couple of months
uh very very well tuned very well put
together and you know luckily now it's
getting a little bit more traction and
people actually paying a little bit more
attention to it but it's a very very
nicely tuned IM IM and then finally the
the Isn the neo3 uh again three drivers
two Sixers and a 5.8 planar uh which I
thought made it was just interesting I
mean obviously it's $200 this is 60 this
is 35 it was initially 50 this is about
30 this is about $50 to $20 so the
disparity of prices here is huge I mean
you know with the price of the near you
can basically buy all the other IM IMS
here uh but I thought it would be
interesting to kind of U and show is
there an improvement is there an upgrade
is there how to how do I position these
compared to that one and how does that
one compared to these ones in terms of
position it's just an interesting um
exercise size and not
necessarily an attempt by me to say oh
this one is the best this one is the
worst and so on so forth I think the
main thing here is how does the trio
stack up to rep three I think that's the
main question many people will want to
um uh want to ask and will want answered
okay let's let's jump straight into the
sound the switches here on the trio much
like on the rep3 on the Caster allow for
basically a change in the base profile
and a slight change in the mids and the
highs but the main change is in the base
profile
I've opted here for the all the switches
up because again um that's the that's
the setting that gives me the best
balance between the base the mids and
the highs and on the rap city I've opted
for uh once again all the switches um in
the up position let show you so you guys
can see all right there we go all hold
up although on the rep sometimes I do
like using it um with uh the the first
two switches up and the the the the
second two down um and I'll explain that
in a in a in a sec okay as well there as
you can see all the
switches up all right so the base here
on all three is very similar there is a
slight difference here in terms of the
base with regards to the cter to the
other two although it graphs the same
there's just a little bit extra amount
of quantity perhaps because it is a 10
mm as opposed to being eight on the two
but the difference is not huge however
having said that this one will probably
be the one more capable of handling
let's say or satisfying the the those ex
those extreme base heads while these two
will do a good job of it but maybe not
as not as not as
capable mind you the differences are not
huge please the difference are not in
terms of quality of the base um these
two definitely have a better quality
base than in the Caster uh again not by
much but better quality less quantity
than this this one's got more quantity
less quality than these two uh the way
that I've have I've got them set up and
when I show you the graphs you'll see in
terms of the mid base impact everything
very similar and then in terms of the
rest of the frequency all kind of do the
more or less the same sort of graphic
but there is nople differences the
noticeable differences past 8K this one
has got more detail because the Bas and
also the is helping out in that upper
mids and trible does make this one the
Rapster be the more resolving the one
that has the more twinkly and sparkly is
the one that has the more um the more
ability to create this atmosphere while
these two have got that to a less degree
this one is a little bit uh less
polished than the than the trio uh only
two drivers has three so obviously that
would not not obviously that would be
expected but you know it it does mean
that this one will will have to work
harder to to to do what the trio does
with three drivers uh so this one is
slightly less polished than that and
that that's the reason why I'm using the
phams um but uh you know I guess for
easy casual listening you won't really
notice the difference you will start
noticing that difference if you like
listening to a lot of like vocal stuff
and like a lot of jazz like I do then
you will pick it up like keep pushing
from uh from um L sa you do notice the
difference between these two uh
definitely uh you notice that that this
one is just a little bit more more
polished a little bit more mature than
the way that it does things and then
again you notice the difference between
these two and then the the option yeah
or the choice between the trio and the
rap city will basically be down to do
you prefer all DD sound or do you like
the ba um the ba um tber okay uh which
mind you mind you let me make make that
perfectly clear the the Reps City for
for not only a CCA but for a lot of IMS
that are using Bas is very very well
done in terms of how that tonality comes
across it's not aggressive it doesn't
have that usual harshness and and and S
that you find usually associated with
let's say the the more basic or the
cheaper implementations of Bas so
although they're not using any fancy Bas
the way they've tuned it the way that
they've done it has been well done to
the point that you you you know you say
wow this is good I'm going to I'm going
to let uh I'm going to let the small few
times that things are not exactly spot
on pass because for $35 you you can't
complain I mean that's the reality let's
let's be let's be let's be honest yeah
we have to be more we have to be a
little bit more flexible when we are
talking about a cheaper end product than
when we are talking about a product
which cost $500 if it was a $500 product
performing like this that would be
impressive but I would be saying
okay it could be better because at $500
you have products which are very well
tuned when it comes to the Bas and how
they are implemented I mean you listen
to for example a studio 4 and B they are
well implemented you know you it just it
just uh it's it's it's got its it's it's
um its thing you listen to a a 530 from
apz 530 the same situation it's BD in
the mids and the highs you know you
listen to sa6 the the the duno sa6
uh the mark 2 and again a very nice
implementation of of mids and highs with
the baas they doing that the work they
should be doing without showcasing the
negatives let's put it that way anyway
so base I've gone I've covered
mids very much equal and the differences
rooa is a difference of being more
polished less polished more detailed so
this is more polished than that more
detailed than that between the two of
them yeah there's a slight Advantage
here in terms of female vocals on the
reper over the the trio uh the male
vocals are about the same uh in
instruments especially trumpets and
guitars and stuff like that so string
instruments and wind instruments outside
there a slight Advantage here but it
will be very much a personal taste
dependent thing you might not like how
it's done here and prefer the way it's
done here um I wouldn't really say this
one is more organic or that's more
clinical they just they have very slight
differences but enough to be noticed if
you have you know
um sensible sensitive ear uh ability I
would say that the factor that will be
very important is what you have in terms
of deck uh if you used in something like
you know the uky or something that uses
mainly the the Cyrus logic chips I would
say uh that uh you will get away better
with the pa tber um if you are using
something which has an ESS based that
chip then the ba might be a little bit
too much here on the rapser depending on
on what you what you want while here the
the the trio is more forgiving in that
aspect so be it an esss or be it an CS
or be even a akm like an m1p from
colorfly it it kind of always main more
or less maintains its it's say it's
similar Vibe of sound all right so I
guess that basically covers technically
then
um this I mean it look we can't expect
the world in terms of technicalities
when we are talking at this price point
all right so let's let's be frank about
that as well but this has got adequate
technicalities for its price that's the
same thing and that's the same thing um
I'm I would say that the detailed
retrieval and the resolution or the
besta on the rep City uh I would say the
tber and tonality very equal on both uh
Sound Stage slightly better here
although it can be perceived as being a
little bit more artificial but slightly
bigger than here than here and in terms
of Imaging as well slightly better here
than here again uh once once
more although it can be perceived or it
can be a little bit more artificial it
is slightly better than than the trio
not a huge difference and will be once
again like I just said very much
dependent on the deck that you are using
and
so um taking the trio and like comparing
it with the R1 I mean this is twice the
price are you getting twice the
performance I would say with the r1s
compared with the trio what you are
getting is a more polished performance
uh and you listen to them and if it's a
casual listen you probably won't even be
able to distinguish too much between
them uh but when you start being paying
a little bit more attention you know and
you listen to things like for example
let's see Luna love from jaob gurvich
this does it just that extra more
polished you know just touch
more okay um if you listen to rain from
Molly
Johnson again same thing the R1 does it
just that extra amount of EX you know
more polished more more more more more
more more more more serious okay
um if you are going to listen to
something like tell me from from tin
liquor I mean probably that you you'll
probably think you'll probably say that
the the the they are the same I am and
maybe even prefer the the the trio the
trio does do EDM and and electronic you
know electronic music EDM pop does do it
very nicely does does give it a good
engagement does give it a good energy um
let's see here uh if you listen to for
example
uh Savannah from John L
um any one of these three does it very
well I would say
perhaps the rap three actually will be
the one that edges out these two ever so
slightly on this particular song um
let's see a Spanish Breeze from Antonio
foron
um the focus yeah is a guitar uh
comparing the R1 with the trio I would
say the r the R1 edges out the trio ever
so slightly the rap city edges out ever
so slightly the the R1 but again you
know very much like here it's what do
you prefer an odd sound or you prefer a
a ba sound as well that's the same
situation here between the Rapster and
the and the R1 um let me see what else
uh tequila Moon from Jessie J another
song that I like listening to all three
of it do it very nicely um the rster and
the R1 other the ones that do it better
in this in this Trio here okay U as
compared now you know taking now the Isn
and just talking slightly of the Isn
over the the D3 let's put it that way um
when I did my review with Isn I said
that this was very capable of offering a
performance that uh was
was difficult to kind of sometimes
justify am I going to be SP am I getting
three times the performance or two and a
half times the performance on the on the
on the Neo as opposed to the um um as I
was saying my apologies you know does it
offer twice or two and a half times the
performance no it doesn't uh what what
you all what you will be getting here on
the U neo3 as opposed to the R1 is again
a a an increasing polish uh you know uh
you lose in terms of Base this has got a
better base than the neo3 in my opinion
Bas in terms of quantity okay um and
what you do what you get is an
increasing just how mature and how well
executed it is that's it compared to the
the the the trio I mean if you take one
and the other I think a lot of people
will prefer this because they don't
understand what the what the neo3 is
trying to do the neo3 is trying to give
you a musical correct sound
a very competent sound in terms of its
technicalities uh and doing it in a
setup which is not usually seen 2 6 mm
and and a 5.8 mm planer and and it does
it very well I mean the neo3 is a very
very good IM but it is an IM which is
somewhat um sensitive to what you use
with it so the results will be very
mixed if for example using the space
cable like I am fantastic you know and
and it's one of those IMS where and I am
a person which is somewhat skeptical to
this to the whole cable thing because it
always generates a lot of controversy
but it is an I am where I did notice
differences between cables it is an I am
that depending on the source again it
will shine more or less for for example
I like the the the neo3 very much with u
a Cyrus logic and a uh an akm setup
fantastic fantastic if with an ESS not
so much so it is a more sensitive I am
for you to be able to extract from it
its best performance this one is more
forgiving all right um so you know this
price jump must be accompanied with
having that in in mind that you know
there all aspects that you're going to
have to consider uh in order to get the
best performance out of of the neo3 uh
and that's it guys I mean I think I've
basically um explained and positioned
well the Toyota fantastic I am I think
it's another another very well executed
I am that ultimately uh I'm confident in
saying just joins that group of IMS at
KZ and and
CCA have launched over the couple of
over the couple you know year year and a
half which are competent you know like I
said the as24 for amazing IM the the the
zvx uh the the cxs the the the the the
uh the rap city uh even to a certain
extent the duo was nice although it was
a little bit base bas light but they you
know the pr1 pro fantastic plan I still
for me the best planer that theyve done
by far by far the best planer uh so they
they they've been able to hit the nail
on the head a few times uh
obviously you know in good CCA and KZ
form we can expect an upgrade soon
enough or another take on on on on this
uh setup so let's see what they have in
store for us next uh but as as as of now
Trio I it thumbs up definitely anyway
guys I'll show you another graphs and
we'll wrap it up okay take
care hi guys welcome now to um the graph
section here for the CCA Trio let me
first of all uh show you the graph just
for the
trio uh number five that's the cter so
take that out number six is the rap city
so take that out as well and let's leave
the graphia of the trio this is with the
111 uh that's with the 0 one 0
011 that's with the 00 Z okay so this is
the the the the the the CCA Trio in the
all switches up position okay this is
with the um first two switches off and
the last two on and this is with all the
switches off
um funny enough and I guess that's just
the way they did it with all the
switches off that's where you get the
most amount of mid base but it also I
mean it's not that the bleed increases
dramatically as you can see basically
the mids upper mids and trible maintain
itself itself the same but because the
base the base um performance perance
changes then obviously then the the
perception of the mids will also change
according ever so slightly um the 0011
setup which is this one it's a nice
setup which I enjoyed particularly with
female vocals okay but I ended up opting
most of the time for this one because it
was just the the one that actually you
know which is the all switches up it
just gave me the the nicest let's say
balance of everything uh yes I did lose
a bit of mid-base impact okay and
occasions I did go for just the the the
the all switches down just for the sake
of listening and and seeing how that was
but ultimately I just thought it was
just it was just a little bit too much
for some of the for the for some of the
music that I listened and I ended up
always reverting to all the switches up
as opposed to uh having the switches all
down okay so the comparisons that I'm
going to be doing are with this setup
which is the one that I personally like
the most compared to the Caster in the
setup that I also like the most in
casted which is a 0011 this is how it
looks so base wise kind of similar but
obviously it's a 10 mm so it's it's more
quantity mids very similar it's see in
the upper mids and treble that there are
some differences um and the diff like I
said it's less polished it's it's more
um for lack of a better word it's more
Rough Around the Edges the Caster as
compared to the the trio um the rep city
which is the one I've just placed let me
just take away the Caster uh very
similar to the and again in terms of the
base uh the mid the same situation but
then you have got a little bit more
extension yeah past 10K which then
confers the rapsy that extra sensation
of space of of Sound Stage of Imaging um
it's just that a little bit more
detailed a little bit more polished okay
so that's the the biggest differences
base wise very very similar and although
you see this
the honestly in listening to it I didn't
really perceive any any any such
difference just I just couldn't pick up
on it
compared oops oops off the off compared
now with the um R1 um the R1 has got a
different style of Basse it's got a
instead of being a Ted base like the the
CC and KZ are using it's got a gliding
style of Base which then confers that
extra mid base that we want in a more
balanced way with regards to the subbase
which on a tuck style sometimes you can
have this this void here in the mid base
impact which can be a little bit um you
know leave you like wanting a little bit
more um but
um look it's not one is better than the
other it's it's just a style that it's
done differently I find that with the
the the the R1 what I get is a more
balanced presentation a more smoother
presentation across the whole frequency
range which is just more satisfying to
me um overall okay and then finally just
I was actually forgetting to put you
other is in let me just quickly get you
the the Isn and show you just for I mean
uh no other uh reason than then you guys
just
see how it uh there we go this is the n
the
Isn although graphically you know you
you you look at it and you say okay well
this is not exactly very appealing I was
expecting something a little bit more um
honestly when you listen first of all
you do not notice this bleed because
it's 2 six mm drivers uh handling the
lower frequencies so you don't notice
this this is this is um it's it's
there's more than open uh mids and
vocals and none of this bleeding that
you might might get the perception of of
having um and then the mids and the
highs as well although they they look a
little bit more jaggedy and up and down
they sound silky smooth and and you know
no issues again once again the the
difference is a more smoother
presentation the problem with the not a
problem the issue with the the the the
the neo3 is to extract its best
performance you have to play around a
little bit with the cables and so on
something that with the with the trio
and with the Rapster they are more
forgiving um you know uh
you don't have to pay so much attention
and especially the Chio compared to the
to the caster and to the to the reper it
is the more I would say the more
forgiving of the three uh ultimately uh
and that's it guys I hope uh I was able
to again give you a a good idea a good a
good um general idea of what the the
trio is about any questions anything
please feel free to ask me and I'll do
my best to answer all right you take
care now bye-bye
