Transcripts
you have all the potential to achieve
what you want but being tired is making
it 10 times harder and it's not your
fault oh my gosh school is like a
full-time job plus you're expected to do
extracurriculars and after school you
have to study and do homework it's
honestly crazy how much you're doing so
pat yourself on the back for making it
this far this is one of my most highly
requested videos you've been asking me
how to study even when you're drained of
energy I've been there too so we're
going to solve that problem today hey
it's Amy I completely understand how
tired you are after school trust me I
was a varsity tennis athlete I did way
too many clubs like at least 12 plus I
was taking five AP classes at one time
but I actually managed all of that while
sleeping 8 hours a day and still having
fun with my friends and spending time
with family how did I do it well by the
end of this video you are going to fully
understand how to tackle your work even
when you're super tired make sure to
watch the complete explanation for each
tip because just one little detail could
unlock your solution for your particular
situation let's go make a decision you
come home from school and you're so
tired that you feel like you just can't
start homework what do you do you're
faced with a decision of usually two
options one you can rest or two you can
push through if you're absolutely too
tired and that's the problem then the
thing you decide is to make yourself
less tired the key here to get less
tired is not to scroll because scrolling
on your phone or playing video games
will honestly just make you more drained
of energy using your phone or social
media to rest is unproductive but
different kinds of rests are productive
for example self-care before taking this
rest this break make sure you actually
need it ask yourself am I truly burned
out or is this an opportunity for me to
get stronger what doesn't kill you makes
you stronger stand okay and anyway if
you decide you really need the break
then honestly just take a power nap
literally go home and sleep that's
completely fine I did this all the time
at Caltech even between lectures cuz I
was just so exhausted I'm take a nap you
want to take a nap I'm take a nap here
okay take a nap right there then you can
also go on a leisurely walk take a bath
just kind of find ways that recharge
yourself one of my ways of making myself
less tired is kind of counterintuitive
but it's to do a quick workout because
when I had tennis after school or
basketball after practice I'm actually
more energized than if I come home
directly after school the other option
is push through if you can't fix how
tired you are or you actually don't need
to fix that then remember progress is
greater than Pace study and do homework
anyway but go easy on yourself if you
can't or don't rest then little slow
progress is better than not moving at
all there's a wise Chinese proverb I
don't know how to say the mandrin right
now but it means it's not about being
slow it's about standing still if this
old wise saying tells us that constant
progress is better than speed then we
should better listen to it either way no
matter what you do I do not recommend
drinking coffee or Red Bull and trying
to pump yourself to push through the
night I prefer more natural ways of
being energized because otherwise you
would probably grow an addiction to
coffee and rely on it and plus it'll
make you crash later whatever you do
just make sure that you're converting
your time properly no matter how tired
you are just keep in mind that the next
thing you do should be helping you in
some way if you're pushing through you
can actually make it easier if you're a
slow tired pace of studying was a 5 out
of 10 you can make your new tired pace
of studying an 8 out of 10 so here's how
to study with more energy and speed the
greatest threat to Success is Not
failure but boredom you're more tired if
you're bored when I read a few pages of
the textbook I'm falling asleep already
so at Caltech even when I was sleep
deprived because the curriculum is one
of the hardest in the world I was
energized and had fun doing my problem
sets when it was with friends so the key
is to find some way to make make your
studying more fun and effective
efficiency is key to everything like I
always preach you do this with active
studying not passive studying passive
methods are things like reading the
textbook scanning your notes copying
noes or highlighting you've asked me
what if I can't study with friends
though well there's this amazing free
study tool that I've recently discovered
is called Thea I've actually made a
community post telling you about this
recently that was not sponsored I just
had to share the tool Thea study with
you as soon as possible so you could use
it and start benefiting from it and you
already commented about how helpful it
was when you tried it so the proof is in
the pudding I've seen a lot of study
tools over the years and when I was in
school but I have not seen a tool as
cool as Thea because of the way they
help you do active recall for any class
you can think of to start just type in a
subject for example psychology and then
it's going to ask you to describe what
you're studying so I'm just going to put
Freud because he's the founder of psycho
analysis and a must note in any
psychology class the Socratic method is
one of the most effective ways to study
and Thea literally uses this method by
giving you quizzes in smart study you
can directly be using active recall and
after answering each question you're
going to be able to see the answer
explanation immediately reviewing that
explanation will optimize your retention
of that information so it's it's much
harder for you to forget it like look at
how quickly all of these practice
questions were automatically generated
for you you can select the difficulty
you can also pick what kinds of
questions you want to prioritize no more
time wasted on making flash cards
because boom Thea provides anything you
need for that subject you want plus
there's a test feature I highly
recommend mock tests because so many of
you told me that you're stressed during
tests so doing this practice will ease
the potential anxiety you get you can
always look back at these tests to
review what you missed and study for
your real exams just when you thought it
couldn't get any better Thea can also
generate a complete study guide like
this single page gives you everything
you need to know on that topic and if
you specify specific terms you need the
study guide will adapt according to what
you have to study you can also upload
your handwritten notes so theia can read
it and generate questions based off of
your notes Thea study is cool because
the name Thea is like the
a I love a good pun use Thea now to end
the school year strong you get free
access right now so make sure to check
it out with a link in my description
commit yourself no matter how tired I
was I couldn't open my eyes half the
time in lectures but I still had to go
to basketball practice no matter what I
still had to run sprints up and down the
core I still had to make my free free
throws otherwise my coach would yell at
us and no matter what when I had study
sessions with my friends I had to show
up because otherwise I would fall behind
these are called non-negotiables
commitments that I had to stick to even
when I was super tired that's why for
you it's really helpful to make your own
non-negotiables because if you have
things like a study session scheduled or
you have to meet with your ta then no
matter how tired you are you're going to
get there and get her done and even
though you're tired you will never
regret doing it if you can't schedule
things like ta meetings or tutoring then
find an accountability partner maybe
it's your friend maybe it's your parent
honestly be creative and think about how
you can create some kind of commitment
in your situation such that even when
you're tired because come on we all get
tired sometimes you'll still be able to
do what you need to get done I'm tired
of this Grandpa that's too damn manad
for example you can also make these
commitments fun things because I was
insane for doing this I really wanted to
go to dimsum with my friend and the only
time she had was this like Sunday
morning and I had to take my organic
chemistry test it's a take-home test
from Caltech and I woke up at 5:00 a.m.
by my own choice to take it was I tired
yes but I still made that choice myself
because of that that fun commitment I
had I'm so insane for that honestly I
cannot see that again tackle your root
cause are you overloading yourself
imagine that you're spreading your
energy over 10 things instead of just
three of course you're going to be more
tired because when you're switching
between those different things you're
doing that's going to take more energy
for your brain to register the new thing
you're doing and it's going to take more
time to switch between them I found that
if I focus too much on one subject I
start get a little Punchy this way when
I hit bulli Revolution overload I just
shift over here and oh hello ulina is
going down and then when that gets too
depressing it's right over to calculus
the key to making things easier when
you're tired and to make yourself less
tired is focus so I explain focus in
this video so you can check it out after
but overall see what things you can say
no to hi I'm Nelly and today we're going
to learn a new word it's called
no it's really hard as a people pleaser
as I am myself I'm trying to get better
and I honestly have fomo all the time I
struggle saying no but I had to be
strong with that like in high school I
was doing way too many clubs in Caltech
too I had too many commitments So
eventually I had to have an intervention
with myself like if you want to take
care of your body and do school and
sports well and still have fun you're
going to have to make make the tough
decisions to cut some things out not
only that but be your own coach and
evaluate how you're taking your breaks
are the ways you're taking your breaks
making you more tired so similar to
point one from earlier between your
study sessions if you pull out your
phone is that making you more tired and
even less motivated to start your next
study period you're so determined and
motivated so it sucks when being tired
is holding you back therefore put your
first and combat the problem choose a
different way to take breaks for example
stretch because that'll get your blood
flowing overall just make sure that
you're constantly evaluating your
specific situation and tackling the root
of the problem not just the symptoms
remember that everyone is tired
everybody gets tired there are always
days where we wake up and we're like H
do I have to get out of bed or like H so
much stuff to do but that's life
everyone has their own things they have
to work toward cuz then they can't put
food on the table you know that helped
me keep going because if other people
are tired and still working hard then
that means I can too that means you can
too great job did I miss anything you
are also super super smart so if you
have any tips yourself of how to study
even when you're tired then make sure to
leave a comment so your other a members
can benefit remember that I was
successful in school and healthy because
of the holistic approach so keep
learning how to improve your mindset
with other videos on my channel remember
to check out theia with a link in my
description completely free right now
let me know what you think and I'll see
you next
time love you peace guess what I was
just drinking tea oops tripping oh my
gosh be not afraid of going slowly only
of standing still literally this same
Chinese proverb from the beginning of
the video oh
