hello and welcome to a stream hopefully
I'm live and the audio is working
because I've not streamed for 6
months or had any new content so I'm
back briefly late at night randomly
which is the worst time to stream but
there's an update to a game game for VR
a racing
game so hello everybody in chat Sim
racing can't say the second name because
I get demonetized firing light backer
hello and welcome so um WRC got the
official VR support
yesterday so I had a quick play last
night had a tweak of some of the
settings I thought you know what I'll
share what I found out so far so this is
is n a definitive guide but if you're
watching this back you might find some
tips on how to get a bit more
performance out of the game so spoiler
alert it's got open XR support yes
that's a win because originally they
were going only going to have open um VR
support So steam VR only uh but we we
left a few comments in the um on the
Forum saying please can we have open XR
support so we can bypass steam VR uh and
they seem to have done that so I think
this is their
first uh home developed VR
implementation by Cod Masters so
previously they've always got a third
party to come in even dirt rally 2 they
they I think they they paid someone to
do the VR implementation and same for
Formula 1 so this is their first
implementation with Unreal Engine
4.2 I think it is um so because it is
the Unreal Engine it isn't totally
optimized for VR so keep that in mind um
also I've got it to look good but out of
the box it doesn't look as good as say
Auto blister 2 but it is VR and it works
and I've got it working with the open XL
toolkit so I'll just quickly run through
uh the settings uh today I'm doing doing
on the quest free because more people
have Quest frees and I already had this
up to date and my wheelbase hadn't used
for several months uh so long in which
that I had to do a firmware
update uh on the fite fitech GTD Pro the
good good news is my um shifter didn't
used to work through the gears it worked
up and down but it didn't recognize the
gears after the firmware update it's now
working so now longer no need uh have to
RMA the the shifter so that's a win just
don't use stuff f wear flash it and it
works again amazing right hope you're
all doing
well and let's get on with settings I
guess okay so first up um I'll go right
so let me go full
screen let me know is the audio working
okay by the
way I presume is or why someone would
have said
something right um if you've got openx
to you'll find it doesn't work it
crashes the game out straight away um so
you need to disable it unless you change
one setting in the game so to begin with
I'll I'll just have it disabled just so
I can show you and other viewers that
watch this back on
replay um how how to get the game up and
running so disable open XR toolkit you
don't need to uninstall it because I
know a lot of people use this for other
Sim games and it's pain they has to
uninstall it and then reinstall it
uh to launch it in VR mode just hit play
there's no radio button for a special VR
mode EA Sports It's in the
game I didn't show
you that's probably very loud as well is
my meta setting so I've got this set to
90 HZ and the render resolution maxed
out I'm running a RTX 49t and an AMD
7800 X 3D so you'll need to adjust your
settings accordingly so I think it's
probably still top speec PC unless
you've overclocked yours
heavily um you're probably going to need
lower than this unless you got the same
spec then you can go ahead and just
follow what I've done um so you've got
two options if you're running a lower
spec you can either reduce the render
resolution uh which will make it not
quite as sharp up or you can reduce the
refresh rate and 90 HZ is a good happy
medium I'd definitely avoid 120 just
isn't worth it you won't hit that and
the
resolution doesn't you have toow
resolution to a point that it won't look
good and also the video encoding over
link isn't very good either at 120 HZ
cuz you you're fitting twice as many
frames as say well almost twice as many
72 HZ through the same video encoder
bandwidth so I always I don't recommend
120 on link compression on display port
on something like a px Crystal find but
I'd avoid you for this right so that's
what I've got set up
there and then if you go into
settings we need 509s for this
title yeah we do and for the uh the PX
Crystal Ultra right with the mega
resolution so
where the audio
go right uh options and
Extras you know
what I wasn't paying
attention when the game loads up you're
supposed to um click the start VR
mode so let me also enable Quest link so
it didn't even detect the headset that
was a good start wasn't
it I can't remember I think you might be
able to just jump into VR straight
away okay I need to restart the
game so make sure you have Quest link
running before you start the
game oh in terms of octalus
debug some willas go out that these are
all my um
settings I'll just leave it here for a
second so you can see I've made a video
on how to um go go through this on um so
one of my other videos quest link and
it's the visible Hood you want to set to
perform if you want to see the
performance metrics so anyway I'm not
doing anything fancy there have encode
bit rate I've got that on 900 just get
the maximum Clarity over Quest
link let's try
again and we Quest link
enabled EA Sports It's in the
game that to the side so you can see
what I see so what good with this
release the uh spectator screen is
actually quite good for recording and uh
other other stuff content creation so
detected the headset click
confirm
okay also got Oculus mirror running at
the same time which I don't necessarily
need but just so I can show you the
performance
right come
on okay want to go to options and
Extras one and now we've now got VR
settings top left corner so the thing
that crashes the open XR toolkit is 3D
location reveal I only found this out
from the virtual
desktop um Discord because someone else
was trying to get it to work via virtual
desktop so I think Matt who's written
the open XR toolkit may do a update for
it to work with virtual
desktop in which case you may update
open xile tool kit just only because
it's supported for virual desktop
otherwise he doesn't support it
officially so there may be a fix but for
the minute you can get to work by
turning turning that off so you don't
need to run it in um well disabled like
I have done you leave ASW on uh no
normally I don't but it must have been
on by default uh turn it
off asynchronous space wall yeah you
want that off disabled otherwise if you
dip below the 90 HZ it'll drop to
45 um
FPS and and render fake render the other
frames and there'll be a dip so good sh
that you should have
off you can tell it's late what it 20 to
midnight after a workday so my brain is
a bit slow at the moment but thanks for
pointing that out right uh VR settings
right this is where the cool stuff is
so so it said turn that off uh I think
most of these stuff things I've got off
fixed Horizon definitely off I think
that's if
you uh get a bit of motion so you can
you can fix that crash vignette turn
that I think that was on 50% so when you
smash into stuff it'll basically di the
edges turn that off cuz I hate
vignetting and uh blink linkers but for
a bit more performance these two
settings here I found on the quest three
you can knock these down to
95 which is um basically the field of
view so you need to turn custom hidden
area mask on cuz that'll be uh gray out
by default so you turn that on and then
this is the same as essentially setting
the tangent fov multiplier on debug tool
so I found I can get to 95 any more than
that and I start notice it and and what
that does is I think if you see
here if I adjust it it'll it'll did this
black
area L change in real
time might
do there you go see on the right side
it's now fully filled in if you turn
that
on it's now cutting out so do that for a
little bit of a performance boost so the
VR
settings uh okay which's next basic
Graphics okay so window this Windows is
for this screen um spectator view here
isn't for anything else
anti-aliasing uh I've got on low anat
Tropic filtering I've got it on eight
you might need to lower that if you're
on a low spec machine cuz that uses a
bit of performance performance I tried
turning anti- aling up from low but it
it kind of looks smear to me so I think
it's best to just go on low but go for a
higher Rend resolution the UPS scalers I
didn't like any of them I've tried them
all and they all just look bad to me um
very rarely do they look good um when
I've used them before like in Formula 1
123 I use the Fidelity effect sharpening
but at the moment I can't recommend
using them if you're quite picky like me
when it comes to Clarity in the
distance uh let me check with the
chat but the upscaling that was causing
open XR okay you'll try my setting after
okay yeah try it uh also I have found
open XR toolkit does crash the game
randomly so that's why I've got it
disabled at the minute for this uh demo
example I will switch back to it uh
after I've got it working a couple of
times cuz it's it's crashed once or
twice when I've tried it um but I don't
know why but it does work just
intermittent uh was there anything else
no I think that was it for the basic
graphic
settings under
Advanced so although it's on the high
quality preset I've changed this so this
is really a custom preset so Shadows
I've got on the high this hits
performance so so you can lower this but
I found out of the things that made the
game still look
reasonable um I've left on high but keep
in mind there's P performance hit for
that we particles turn that to ultra fog
off crowd ultra low don't care about
them ground cover Ultra I like the
ground to look good trees low I found
when it is higher than low some of the
trees really shimmered brightly
VR um but surprisingly by bringing it
down to low stops them shimmering so
much uh Dynamic objects so this is
controls the amount of popping you get
so this is like the dynamic loading of
objects as you're driving at them so
again this is the good performance hit
for this so if you're struggling turn
this down
lower uh car Reflections there's also a
big performance hit for this turn this
down to low you can try ultra low um but
this basically controls the the
reflections on the car interior like the
wind screen when it was on ultra low it
looks really grainy and horrible and
also when you toggle between low and
ultra low there's a weird bug uh so keep
in mind this is a Beta release because
there's problems with it so if you
toggle this back and forth sometimes the
reflection on the wind screen moves with
your head so you it'll be like a perfect
rectangle in front of you fits the the
window but soon as you turn your head
that the reflect mes with you that's a
strange bug I found I've let EA know
about that
uh run low if you can if not you stuck
with ultra low what would be nice would
be the option to turn this off
completely but there is no off maybe
there's a way to do that through config
some way some somewhere like behind the
scenes in a confit file U mirrors turn
them off don't care about them skid
marks off don't want skid marks uh track
Ultra Ultra Ultra motion blur off okay
so there are my
settings uh there was one for fixed
fiated rendering by the game was it
basic
Graphics oh yeah pated rendering
strength so this it controls the the
fixed Fage rendering amount I put it to
maximum because it didn't bother me it I
couldn't really notice it so Crank that
up to three and I think that's it all
for the game settings
uh the only thing I've experimented with
open XR toolkit on top of this is the
cas sharpening and I also increased uh
changed the fiated rendering profile
because it gives you more options but in
this example I've not got it on
right I think that's it so I'll show you
what it looks like and how it runs I'm
sure the best way to do this I might
just show you on screen on the preview
screen so you can see the graphics
better and then I'll bring the octalus
mirror over
so you can see the Benchmark but
obviously you'll see one eye cropped
around the
edges uh Sim
racing he run it for two hours and no
crash with upscale disabled in game and
in open XR okay even without that
setting uh right up a time trial
let's do one of these at
random the first
one oh the other thing you'll want to do
one last setting it's not for graphics
it's just for
convenience um where is it
back you'll want to
in
controls
edit and you'll want down at the very
bottom reset VR view bind that to a
button on your wheel cuz I guarantee
whichever car you'll get in you won't be
perfectly happy with the VR position so
buy
that I think that was all the settings I
can think of that I figured out a worth
tweaking all right I'm not going to do
much racing CU it's getting L here but
just so you can see what it looks like
and I'll turn text to speech up a bit so
you I can hear what people are saying
now let's put the headset
on some someone typed something in chat
so I can check it's uh working what the
volume's like
Max
racing so what's good with this having a
proper spectator screen is the um the
replays you can record decent replays
obviously knowingly you can't save
replays I don't know if I'll have you
added to the game but at least the VR
replays are like proper 2D
representations
hey yeah you need to do
something left good luck see this is why
I bound the uh seat position cuz I'm
like really high up so I press the the
re VR reset so there we go how's that
that actually doesn't look too bad
quality wise remember we've got Quest
three maxed out on the render resolution
at 90 HZ and just sat
here not moving which obviously isn't
that indicative of uh performance I'm
going to do this
without right I I'll just have to tell
you what this gauge is showing when I
unpa and then what I'll do I'll sort out
the mirror screen in a
bit so we're on performance head room
25% so we got a bit of head room to
go bit loud that better
2 go four right pass Junction and five
left 30 five left don't cut and late
heav
see there's my
ghost very Rusty at
game but I have been waiting for
official VR
support 30 right and six left 80 slight
right slight left to six right
50 looks reable
now tweak the
SS right tit
three left tit
30 left four right tit
keep four left right into six left into
late one right and three left
100 stuff it okay
maybe I'll try and move uh the window
over so you can see the uh
perance Advanced Graphics oh uh another
performance
tip
is lowering the resolution of this
preview
screen
so you want to if you're not using it
for anything like you're not streaming
you might as well have this lower than
your actual monitor could go even lower
than that hit back we go confirm we'll
move this to the other
monitor and Oculus mirror to
Here full screen so you can see what I'm
seeing I have to click over there to
keep screen
active start
starts four right five left good
luck obviously there's a bit of a
performance cost for having Oculus
mirror running but not
much and I haven't tested this in full
rain yet
either I've had it on a wet time TR
track with get more Reflections on the
uh the road
[Music]
obviously stuff like rain is going to
affect performance a little so you'll
need to adjust according to the kind of
sections you're
racing right and left
80 left
right left right and right 18 left long
[Music]
ouch I'll just drive for a minute more
and then um I'll restart the game with
open XL tool kit so you can see what
saying got enabled for that and maybe
we'll come back and do this
section and comp compare the performance
difference if there is
any left
[Music]
100 three left it's a three right half
to six right half
break left half
L 40 five right Titans into three left
[Music]
[Applause]
half stop
there and then uh we'll restart the game
with open XR to get enabled
our companion
app so just going to toggle it um if
you're having problem still there safe
mode you might need to enable and reset
your settings cuz it's possible you
might have some settings from a previous
game that are just causing the game to
crash so there's always safe mode and
press contrl F12 F2 and F3 to delete all
your previous settings always people
always ask me about the games in this
list as well they never appear they only
appear in here once you've run the game
so that's why WRC is there at the bottom
right it's now
enabled don't need open composite or
anything like that because this is a
open XR game EA Sports It's in the game
[Music]
see if it works or if it
crashes the menus always work fine it's
just sometimes when you go in the car it
crashes with the tool
kit um no so what it was is U Matt who
originally wrote open xile toolkit he um
he he did say other non-open XR games
are supported via open composite but
since he didn't write it he had no
guarantee stuff will work and then what
happened is I think lots of people
flooded the open XR toolkit Discord
asking for help solving problems for non
open XR
games yeah
uh it's that that's all it is it was
just s of I think it took a lot of his
time
understandably um so he just said look I
don't support it so it all still
works um well works as much as it did
there's just no active support the only
active support Matt's doing now is for
virtual desktop and the open the VD XR
runtime um I don't know if that means if
he if there's any fixes he'll update
this as
well right so can you see this yeah you
can it's sort of the other performance
things in the way hang on let's move
that let's just turn off the performance
H for a
minute so we're just seeing one lot of
info what the hell I just turn it
on so settings all I've done is I've got
up scale sharpening turned on Cas which
is basically a sharpening algorithm
which works a treat uh so if you can't
run full
resolution and need to scale down that's
worth checking out alternatively you've
got the um Nvidia image
scaler Invidia image scaler
FSR uh but you shouldn't really need to
use them because the game's got buil-in
ones but these might look better than
the game built-in ones because I've
tried them and they just look too smear
for me anyway that's the one I'm running
fix rendering I've gone for preset
uh call outer mask hm which is like so
we're doing double calling we're all
doing calling in the game and we're
doing it here and then I've just G
Performance uh and balance so you can
you can change these as you wish so
narrower that probably shows on the
edges of the screen it's more more fuzzy
now so I think performance and balanced
and that was it
uh turbo mode
off everything else post processing
off uh override render
resolution that's a way you can super
sample if you want to if you want to go
beyond what we've had in the Oculus um
configuration tool at the very start of
the stream but you probably don't need
to you might need to just actually lower
it but I just leave
that uh and that's it right let's see if
this exit
menu
shs is that on that
Higher
tral One One irritating thing is I can't
actually see my um Mouse pointer in game
so you have just use your wheel or
keyboard all right going back
here same car same
everything so let's see if this actually
uh works or this crashes on us
interesting i' brought up some Moon
Square don't have is
that the hell is that I've got some sort
of debug mode distance
starts four right five left I found some
hidden well see I'm in the game with
debug o Open XR tool kit but I've got
some sort of ingame debug mode I don't
know how I've entered it I to ENT
not the previous
screen start the car so
Escape 5 4 3 2 1 go play Four Junction
and very
interesting that's what I'm seeing that
square
try launching again hopefully let's
clear
it EA Sports It's in the
game can still see is
somehow
in wink
look
seem
to gone into some sort of oculus link
debug option have I done that on the
dbook all
somehow stereo
ebug I must have hit down the arrow from
performance
right first time I've ever noticed
that all right there we go I was like
what the hell is that Minecraft
logo rearranged so you can see see what
I'm
seeing e tool is
running open Exile tool kit is running
so all we did was we enabled to say
sharpening
and uh what else oh we changed the
fiated rendering
slightly so I think we're double fiated
rendering could be wrong I've left the
in-game fiated render on three
starts four right five work no crashes
so once head rooms down to 20 but that's
cuz we've got the uh sharpening
enabled L four right structure five left
30 five left don't cut late heav
right 40 six right
30 two left
6 right
TI 30 6 right and six left
80 s right s left six
right last time I sighted behind my
[Music]
ghost don't if that's affecting
performance at
all 176 left
right I
[Music]
sharper definitely more on the limit
though performance
wise six left into late right and three
left
100 if I could uh move that that info
over
no I can't see double uh F render
actually see if I can move the
uh BS in for
over one of these is manyu position I
can never remember which one it's on
advaning to do this it's been so
long distance oh does this make it
smaller I show expert settings there yes
i l it whole host of info
one that could um horizontal
offset I AG it
it's not right in front of my Feld
view there there we go right so everyone
just tweaking stuff so you can see more
[Applause]
info would you get a headro info yeah
and one left half
long 14 F right tight
to it's it's on the edge like when I'm
going for the tunnels and maxing out so
I could probably do with lowering
something really but for the most part
what we're
on try read the info as I'm
driving CPU headro so lots of CPU
available especially the GPU constrained
close topu head 26%
[Applause]
it's interesting cuz the
uh
Oculus starts veryy to the open XR
[Music]
to try different course different
car and then I'll finish up soon almost
bedtime
oh it's
Crash so okay so you can use it but I
think you still get you get intermittent
crashes maybe I'll just leave that there
cuz I think I've covered
everything um
so short on sweet stream 45
minutes right so if you just joined the
stream rewind to the start I'll go
through um all the settings in game and
um the quest free settings and I show
you how you can get it working with the
open XL tool kit you just have
to uh tweak that one setting but it
still seems a bit temperamental with
open XR tool kit just randomly crash on
some of the menus so use it at your own
risk as it were it seems to run pretty
well even without open XR tool kit
there's a lot of settings you can tweet
there hey hold holding down
socks you seen linkoln clay late no I
haven't I've seen him on streams and I
spoke to him about a week or so ago when
we watched the F1 so I do keep in touch
I've just not been online doing YouTube
stuff recently but thanks for asking um
yeah so that's it hope you enjoyed enjo
the video if I find any more settings
that uh help I'll let you know if you're
watching this back and you've got other
tips I've missed leave them in the
comments below I might try the pymax
crystal next uh because this was all on
the quest 3 today and I may do some more
um I set up another club actually so i'
I think I've got a couple of clubs set
up already in WC but I want to get back
into uh Sim racing I enjoy the rallying
I was just waiting for official VR
support which is now out now now out now
yes all right thanks everyone that stop
by hopefully see you soon good night
