Highlights
Tip number one suggests finding a song that works in key with the current song to create a harmonic mix.
Consider remixing the current song with an instrumental or vocal layer for a cohesive sound.
Tip two involves analyzing the crowd's reaction to identify what type of music has been most effective.
Recall the last half hour to an hour of play and determine the music style that garnered the best response.
Tip three recommends playing a curveball tune to recapture the crowd's attention if the energy drops.
A curveball tune should be different from the current style but not too far off to maintain crowd engagement.
Tip four is about switching the current song to a remix version to surprise and re-engage the audience.
Remixes can alter expectations and create a memorable moment in the DJ set.
Tip five advises playing two songs for the crowd and one for the DJ to balance crowd pleasing with introducing new music.
This ratio helps to keep the crowd happy while also educating them with fresh tracks.
Finding the right balance point is crucial to not lose the crowd's energy.
Resident DJs can leverage this approach to build a rapport with a regular audience over time.
For one-off sets, it might be trickier to apply this rule due to less familiarity with the audience.

Transcripts
hey welcome back to crossfader my name
is jamie harley and in today's video i
have five tips for you to help you know
what to play next when you're playing to
a crowd whether it's in a bar or a club
or a party wherever you are these five
tips will help you choose the next song
to play sometimes we just freeze we're
on the spot we don't know what to play
next to the audience we have in front of
us it's a natural thing that happens to
all DJs
so these five tips you can keep in the
back of your mind to give you some
inspiration next time you're in that
position tip number one find another
song that works in key that you can lay
it in with the current song that's
playing
so think about re mixing the current
song that you have already playing if
it's a vocal song then you could find it
an instrumental to layer underneath and
you want to make sure you find a song
that mixes in key so that as you're
playing these two songs together it
sounds nice and the harmonics work if
you're playing an instrumental song you
could do it the opposite way around you
could find a vocal to lay it over the
instrumental or you could just pick two
songs that work really well together
here are a few examples just to give you
some inspiration
[Music]
[Music]
okay tip number two what has the crowd
currently been reacting to up until this
point you've probably been playing your
set and certain songs will have got a
better response than other songs that
you've played so think back to the last
half an hour the last hour that you've
played to the crowd and what have they
been reacting to has it been songs in
particular that have a lot of vocals
that they can sing along to has it been
songs with big heavy drops that they can
go crazy to when it drops or has it been
songs that have got big melodic build
ups and create a lot of atmosphere and
tension what style of music has been
working and creating a reaction and then
start to brainstorm and think about what
else in your library sits into that
category you're going to have to think a
little bit here it's not just going to
present itself but once you start
thinking of a group of songs say a group
of songs that all have big drops
I guarantee other songs will pop into
your head and it will remind you of
other songs in your library to them play
next tip number three a curveball tune
now if you don't want to curveball tune
is then this is something that keeps the
attention of the crowd it catches the
crowd out it's something that wouldn't
normally sit in with the style of music
you're currently playing but because
it's not the same and because it's a bit
out there it catches the attention of
the crowd if you feel like you've been
playing a similar style of music and the
crowd started to die down slightly then
a curveball to you could just catch
there
attention directed back towards you the
DJ and pick it back up again
now there is a fine line here I could
have bought you and cook you're too far
one way you could go maybe a bit too
cheesy for the crowd that you're playing
far away you could go a bit too serious
or a bit too obscure so you've got to
find that nice balancing point and the
more you experiment with this when
you're playing to an audience the more
you'll start to understand which songs
kind of sit on that balancing point you
could be playing loads of house music
just banging out loads of house music
and the crowd starting to get a bit
bored you could just drop in there an
old-school disco song that's vocal and
it might just catch the crowds attention
then you could remix that disco song
back into house Muse you can continue
your set it's something that just stands
out in your set it's a memorable point
that people remember from your set and
they'll say oh that's that DJ that
played played that random tune but it
went off it was amazing think about what
songs your audience will appreciate that
aren't necessarily the same genre that
you're currently playing you know we
don't all just listen to one genre of
music we have different preferences so
take what you already know about
yourself if you like a certain type of
music and what other music do you maybe
listen to at home in your spare time
try and think of certain songs that
would just stand out in a set but also
create a bit of atmosphere tip number
four you could actually switch up the
song that you're playing into a remix of
that song this will really catch the
audience's attention as well they might
have a generic commercial song that they
know and they're singing along to and
they know what's coming next they know
where the chorus comes and where to sing
along on what words come next but if you
remix that song a mix sorry rip mix into
another song but it's a remix of that
song so you can have a house you remix
sort of drum and bass remix or whatever
it is if you've got different remixes of
the same song you could then swap into
those remixes and again catch the crowd
out they might be expecting one style of
drop and then you switch into the remix
drop and it just it just grabs their
attention again that's another way to
get inspiration when playing to a crowd
let's take a look at one or two examples
of this

tip number five something that myself
and I know love of the resident DJs when
I used to work as a resident DJ and
other working resident DJ's do a lot of
and this is a great rule to stick with
is to play two songs for them and one
song for yourself two songs for them one
song for yourself so what this means
really is you're playing two songs to
please the crowd and one song to
potentially educate the crowd then
you've got this nice ratio going on if
you're keeping the crowd happy because
every three songs two of them they're
going to know and enjoy but one of those
songs in every three might be something
new that they haven't heard before but
they might actually appreciate and enjoy
they won't know this until they hear it
so you've got to find that point find
that balancing point again you don't
want to just slam out five or six songs
in a row that they don't know that they
aren't going to respond to because you
will lose the energy of the crowd but if
you play two songs for them and then
play another song for you that maybe
educates them it means it's a balancing
point there you're not just playing for
the crowd and you're not just playing
for yourself you're playing somewhere in
between and that's a really nice sweet
spot to try and sit in so remember that
rule two songs for them one song for you
this definitely helps as a resident DJ
because you know the audience that you
have week in week out or month in month
out and you can understand that audience
you know what they enjoy and you know
the songs that they don't know but they
might actually enjoy as well so this is
something that will build more and more
the more regularly you play in front of
a specific audience if you're just doing
a one-off set this is a bit trickier to
kind of stick to because if you're doing
an hour set in the middle of a night and
a new event that you've never played
that before then it can be quite tricky
to stick to a rule like this but it's
always something worth bearing in the
back of your mind
I hope these five tips have really
helped you and giving you some good
points to sit in your mind next time
you're playing to a crowd and you feel a
little bit stuck please drop a comment

favorite or which one you're going to
