Outlines

Highlights
The user lives in a loud area and found sleep earbuds, specifically from Bose, to help block out noises like train whistles and ambulance sounds.
Bose discontinued their Sleep Buds 2, making them highly valuable on resale sites like eBay where prices have surged to $600.
Soundcore released a new pair of sleep earbuds called the Sleep A20, which addressed many shortcomings of the Bose Sleep Buds.
The Sleep A20 features new functionalities such as sleep tracking, Bluetooth music playback, and improved battery life.
These earbuds are ideal for people in loud environments, those who sleep next to a snoring partner, or anyone who enjoys listening to soothing sounds like ASMR while falling asleep.
The earbuds are highly customizable, offering three different sizes of ultra-soft silicone ear wings and four sealed ear tips for optimal comfort.
The design is suitable for side sleepers due to its slim profile, and the user finds them comfortable, even when rolling around during sleep.
In sleep mode, the earbuds can play pre-loaded sounds such as white noise or crickets, with multiple categories like low, mid, and high-frequency masking sounds.
The Smart Switch feature transitions from Bluetooth music to ambient sleep sounds after a set time, helping users fall asleep to music and stay asleep with white noise.
The battery life is impressive, offering up to 14 hours in sleep mode and 10 hours in Bluetooth mode, with the case extending this to 80 and 55 hours respectively.
Although they lack active noise cancellation (ANC), the compact design and long battery life make up for this omission, and the ambient noise still masks outside sounds effectively.
The earbuds have customizable touch controls, allowing users to play/pause music or adjust volume via double or triple taps.
Sleep tracking is available, monitoring movements like rolling over and sleep position, but it doesn’t track REM sleep or other advanced metrics.
The 'Find Device' feature in the app helps locate lost earbuds by playing a subtle high-pitched sound.
The Soundcore Sleep A20 is half the price of the Bose Sleep Buds, making them more accessible while offering similar, if not better, comfort and functionality.
Transcripts
I live in a loud area and sleeping
through train whistles and ambulance
sounds is just not easy so sleep earbuds
became pretty interesting to me and a
few years ago I bought a pair from Bose
essentially they're a smaller and more
comfortable pair of earbuds that helps
block out the noises around you while
masking it even further with ambient
noise like white noise or crickets or
whatever and unlike airpods you can
actually sleep on your side because
they're a really Slim profile and while
the bow sleep buds 2o help me sleep a
lot they did have some problems some
shortcoming
that the entire industry has kind of
been trying to solve unfortunately Bose
did not make a sequel and fix those
problems and instead they just
discontinued the Sleep Buds and clearly
I'm not alone in liking this format and
a lot of other people really love them
making the price on eBay now about $600
for anybody who still has a pair of Bose
sleep buds 2o but there is some good
news soundcore just came out with a
promising new sequel called the a20 and
these earbuds fixed almost all those
issues and even added some cool new
features like sleep tracking Bluetooth
music playback and a couple others I'll
talk about throughout this video and
while I've been wearing these for about
a month now I wanted to share my honest
feedback my honest review with you about
the soundcore Sleep a20 earbuds and by
the way these are not just ideal for
loud environments they're also great for
anyone who sleeps next to a snoring
partner anyone who suffers from tentis
anyone who suffers from anxiety or just
anyone who likes music or maybe ASMR or
whatever when they're trying to fall
asleep but even if that's not you these
are still really interesting still
really cool Tech and I think you'll be
interested to see what kind of cool
features they added into these and what
kind of battery life they get and
perhaps how other earbuds regular
Bluetooth earbuds could adopt some of
this technology in the future now
looking at these earbuds you probably
have a lot of questions like do they
have active noise cancellation does my
phone always need to be connected Can
the battery actually last all night and
most importantly like are they actually
comfortable for that amount of time well
let's go through these questions one at
a time starting off with are they
comfortable I've been wearing these I'm
honestly very very picky a lot of
earbuds fall out of my ears sometimes
they're not comfortable these are very
comfortable and that's because you're
able to customize them in a very
interesting way so they have three
different like extremely soft silicone
uh ear Wings is what they're calling
them like wing tips on there and so this
is like the softest most Hollow silicone
piece I've ever seen so like sitting it
in your ear you don't even know that's
there but it holds it in your ear really
well like I can roll around and
sometimes I find myself adjusting it
maybe once or twice in in the night but
they never fall out of my ears and then
the actual tip itself they have a really
cool design where instead of one more
firm piece of silicone they have two
that are kind of layered on top of each
other that give you better noise a
passive noise blocking well also a
really nice soft feel in your ear so
there's not a lot of ear fatigue at all
when you're wearing these and there are
four different uh sealed tips this one's
called the sealed tip the ear tip that I
have and there's also three breathable
tips as well if you find that ears get
hot from this my ears didn't get hot at
all uh so I was fine with the seal tip
you get a slightly better passive noise
blocking with that uh but if your ears
ever get hot or if you want more
breathability or if you're worried about
ear infections or whatever uh depending
on your own ears maybe you want the
breathable ones but kind of going
further with the Comfort these have a
really hard plastic exterior so you
might wonder like are you going to feel
that at all and I found that if I'm
sleeping on my side in most pillows I
don't feel it at all but if you find a
pillow that's like extra firm sometimes
you can feel it a little bit but never
to the point that it gave me any kind of
discomfort and I was very easily able to
sleep on my side wearing these earbuds
right here so comfort fit and ear
temperature were all really good for me
Additionally you can also get these in
any color you want as long as it's beige
all right so now what sounds are
actually played on these earbuds well
there's two modes you can use the first
one is sleep mode and if I go over to
app it'll kind of make more sense so we
can tap on these earbuds at the top you
can see sleep mode and Bluetooth mode so
I have sleep mode right now and if we go
over to sounds you'll see there are four
that are loaded onto these earbuds and
these will just play all night you don't
need your phone to be connected they'll
play through uh basically a loop of some
amount of like sound that you'll never
notice that it is a loop at least I've
never noticed and there are a lot you
can choose from so if I actually uh
let's say I want to edit this I can say
edit I can get rid of uh maybe cozy
bedroom I can delete that one and then
that brings us down to three interesting
little Quirk here you have to actually
go over to music mode on the top or
Bluetooth mode as they call it and then
within sounds you can add other sounds
so one thing I like first of all is that
there are uh different categories so low
frequency masking mid-frequency or high
frequency so if you have tontis maybe
high frequency masking is better if you
have a lot of like rumbling sounds
around your apartment low frequency
might be better try them all out I think
that's really useful and then a bunch of
other kind of like Serenity ones if you
want to call it that summer night Forest
stream space journey uh like a bunch of
different ones available so I can go and
just download maybe like soothing rain
you tap on transfer it'll send that over
to your earbuds and then you don't need
to have your phone connected when those
are playing now you could just play
these uh in Bluetooth mode here and
never have to transfer them to your
earbuds but this is how I prefer to do
it now the second mode you have is going
to be uh Bluetooth mode as you can see
which is going to allow you to play
anything on your phone whether it is
like YouTube or Spotify podcast whatever
uh it's not going to be the best sound
quality like these are obviously not
intended to be high-fi earbuds but they
definitely get the job done they sound
more than good enough for me to sleep
and it is Bluetooth 5.3 so you should
you should have a much more stable
connection than we saw with a lot of the
earbuds in the past now if I go back to
the middle on the bottom we can go to
playback settings and you can see there
are a couple options here one of them is
how long is it going to play well you
can actually play until you fall asleep
so that's really beneficial or you can
play it all night now it doesn't
actually know when you fall asleep so
you have to choose like until I fall
asleep meaning like hey uh set it for if
it takes you 7 hours to fall asleep I'm
really sorry to hear that uh but like
for me I usually have it like maybe 1
Hour 2 hours something like that that's
one thing that I've really been kind of
playing with with these earbuds and one
thing that I wish was a little bit
better I wish one it was able to detect
when you were asleep and kind of Fade
Into either silence or more importantly
I would like to fade into a lower volume
once I fall asleep sometimes I'm trying
to mask distractions just as I fall
asleep and then once I'm asleep sound
can kind of wake me up a little bit or
keep me from going into a deeper sleep
so I wish it would kind of Fade Away
into a quieter volume or at least allow
you to do that now what it does allow
you to do though is enable Smart Switch
right here now Smart Switch is
essentially going to kind of transition
you from Bluetooth mode into just
playing one of the other sounds so if
you're listening to music or a podc or
whatever uh it'll transition you after
that amount of time so like 1 hour it'll
go into summer night sound is what this
is set to do right now so I usually
don't use Bluetooth mode so that doesn't
even matter to me but there's another
cool thing that these do if we go over
to sleep mode you can actually enable
Smart volume now smart volume uses the
microphone on your phone so your phone
needs to be nearby and that will adjust
the volume of the earbuds based on the
sounds of the room if something gets
louder in the middle of the night if
somebody comes in and starts making
noise uh or if everything gets quieter
it'll adjust the volume on your earbuds
accordingly now going back to that
question of how long do these earbuds
actually play there's really two answers
one is going to be the two hours or
whatever you have the setting set to and
after which it'll switch over to just
sleep sounds or ambient noise but the
other answer is going to be how long can
they actually like if you have them
non-stop how long can they play and this
is really quite impressive so soundc
cor's previous generation struggled with
this I think it was like 6 to 8 hours
which is like barely at least for me I
sleep for eight hours or I try to sleep
for8 hours it's kind of Ideal uh and so
they would die by the time I would wake
up in the morning so
these have 14 hours of battery life in
the earbuds and 80 hours when you
include the case and that is with sleep
mode but even if you go over to uh
Bluetooth mode and you're streaming from
your phone you still have an impressive
10 hours of battery in the earbuds and
55 hours when you include the case which
I think is absolutely just incredible
for how microscopic these earbuds
actually are unfortunately the case does
not have wireless charging I don't think
that's a big deal breaker because I'm
always charging in the same location is
great but it's infinite if you plug in
obviously next question are there touch
controls the answer is yes and you can
actually customize this if you press the
settings button on the top right and go
to controls there's a double tap by
default which is going to either switch
the mode or it's going to play pause
depending on which earbud you tap and
triple tap is going to be volume down or
volume up but if we look at that you can
actually change it to some playback
controls volume down volume up next
previous play pause or if you find that
you are accidentally double tapping it
in your sleep or triple tapping uh you
could just set that to none and then
that disables that feature so you won't
have to worry about playing or pausing
while you're sleeping question number
four I think we're on right now do these
have active noise cancellation this is I
guarantee going to be like a huge
question that that I had and a lot of
other people have the answer is
unfortunately no these don't have ANC so
the lack ofc is giving us a much more
compact design and a much longer battery
life uh and because it's making this
white noise or Ambient sound that you're
playing through the earbuds it still
does a really good job of masking a lot
of sounds similar to what ANC would do
however I think someday in the future it
would be really nice to see ANC come to
a pair of earbuds like these I think
right now the trade-off just isn't quite
worth it to addc on these you would end
up with bulkier earbuds a shorter
battery life you would have to add
microphones on here a more powerful chip
on the inside and overall I think it's a
worthwhile compromise to get the better
battery life the better comfort and just
the White Noise still masks a lot of the
sound anyway so the next question of how
do you wake up with these earbuds
completely a valid question because I
could totally see myself sleeping
through any alarm because like the whole
point of these is to mask outside sounds
and so if you have an alarm going off
but you have these earplugs in playing
white noise like I would be sleeping
through alarms every single day but
these actually have a really cool
feature built into them that in my
opinion is actually even better than a
phone alarm because it wakes you up in a
much more natural and gentle way that
that I think is just more pleasant than
a phone alarm it's not like the iPhone
alarm that's literally titled alarm um
if you use that I don't know if I could
trust you like that's we need to talk
that's I can't wake up to something
that's that jarring it's just like such
a startling way to get up now talking
about the sleep tracking this is a
really cool thing on these earbuds if we
go back to sleep data you can see right
here uh the Sleep data that I have it
essentially tracks using an
accelerometer in the earbuds and it can
tell you things like how many times you
roll over throughout the night uh I
rolled over 35 times if you tap on it it
says anytime between like 20 and 40 is
like a pretty normal range any more than
that means maybe it's too hot in your
room or something like that it also
tells you the position you slept in the
most for me is my right side and I
actually do know that's what I tend to
do so that's definitely correct the
overall like pattern here of when you're
awake and when you're asleep I can
compare this on screen to I wore the
whoop last night as well as the ultra
human ring but just comparing to the
whoop 4.0 which is generally a pretty
accurate sleep tracking you can see that
what this is missing is REM it's not
showing you rem obviously it's not able
to really measure that it's only able to
measure light and deep sleep the deep
sleep was fairly close and matched up
reasonably well uh the awake period I
think is going to be fairly accurate
because that's when you move around the
most I think it's no surprise these are
not going to come with the most in-depth
sleep tracking they'll be able to detect
when you move or roll around but they're
not testing like your heart rate or
blood oxygen levels or anything like
that now the next question is what if I
lose these earbuds it's very
understandable these are really tiny
earbuds they're like very light tan so
they're not exactly easy to see
especially if they fall into your sheets
you can actually go and find your
earbuds uh in the app here so if I go up
to settings I can say find device and I
can play a sound on the left or the
right so if I play it uh make sure it's
not in your ears say
continue you can kind
of I don't know if you can hear that I'm
holding it close to the mic it's a very
high pitch it's really subtle so you
have to make sure there's no other
Ambient sound in your bedroom but you it
does help you find them so let's talk
about the pros and cons of these earbuds
starting off in the Pro side of course
sleep is arguably the most important
thing probably right behind exercise
that you can do for your health probably
right behind exercise and most people
really neglect it so something like this
if it can improve your sleep at all help
you sleep a little more soundly or if
nothing else track your sleep and help
you figure out hey maybe the room's too
hot or whatever that could be a huge
Health Improvement gives you more energy
better mood all around you could just be
living better with better sleep so
that's a positive this doing anything I
think could be a positive for a lot of
people if you have tontis these could be
really beneficial additionally if you
sleep in low environment maybe if your
spouse or your partner goes to bed
really late or wakes up really early
that could also you know help you stay
asleep during those times and these
could really just be a big problem
solver for anyone who has a difficult
time sleeping maybe if you like to
listen to music or white noise or ASMR
or whatever while you're sleeping or
falling asleep at least this can
definitely be a big benefit there and
unlike a lot of white noise speakers or
noise machines this is a lot more
portable this can easily fit in a
backpack you could use it in like a hos
h on a plane I don't think a plane would
make the most sense um but you know like
other environments a hotel room for
example if you're in the city these
could be really beneficial there another
big positive is that the Bose sleep buds
I know now on eBay they're like 600
bucks but even when they were new they
were $300 and like the case is a little
bit more premium but the earbuds
themselves are not really that different
I actually find uh the soundcore ones a
little bit more comfortable now and
these soundcore ones are selling for
$149 now that's no small sum of money
but I do appreciate that these are half
the price and it kind of gives it a much
more accessible price point but not
everything's great with these talking
about what is not on these specifically
some of these are drawbacks and some of
them are just things that you need to
know you're not going to get with these
active noise cancellation these don't
have that these don't have wireless
charging they don't have high quality
audio but that's not really the point of
them they do have in my opinion a very
secure fit but it's not like the most
secure you're not going to be running
with these could potentially work their
way out of your ears but for sleeping
again that's kind of the point these do
not have a microphone they don't have a
water resistance rating again neither of
those matter much when you're sleeping
um and they don't really have more
advanced touch controls or any other
color options that is all like what
these don't have in my opinion I don't
think any of those are deal breakers I
still think this is a really cool
product for specific people it's not
going to be for everyone but for the
people that need to sleep better and
have some some disturbances the
soundcore Sleep a20 could potentially be
exactly what you're looking for so yeah
for Sleep earbuds there's not really a
whole lot more I could ask for but let
me know your thoughts on these earbuds
are they going to last a while uh are
you worried about anything are they
really exactly what you want as well let
me know in the comments down below and
