Transcripts
so at the end of last year my company
appsumo.com challenged itself to launch
a new product in 20 days
and make 30 000 here's exactly how we
did it it's called
tidycal.com in today's video i want to
walk you through from how we went to
idea
to mockup to design to launch so that
you can launch your own product
just like this let's dive in so step one
picking an idea and every successful
product starts with a great
problem so at the end of last year our
appsumo originals team
put together a master list of all the
things that we could solve for our
customers we came up with ideas from
scheduling tools and other email tools
bots i guess they're still popular video
capture tools
tools like stream yard for sharing
things to youtube as well as community
tools just like circle
so the main thing we're considering and
i'm gonna show you exactly how we
prioritize this is
what can we solve for ourselves as well
as for our customers aka
the sumo links again i have to remind
you guys that solving your own problems
is always going to be best
you will not get rich buying gamestop
sorry build a business and you will get
rich
so once we have this solid list of all
the problems and ideas that we're
excited about
we used a framework to actually
prioritize them
so here's the framework and we created a
template in the description below it's
free for you to use
so the framework that we use to actually
prioritize these ideas and i'll tell you
exactly why we did that in just a second
first off is viral so on a scale of one
to five how much would this product
go viral so that's really important
because if you don't have a marketing
budget or you don't have a lot of money
you want a product that markets itself
so the more people use it
the more that other people find out
about it so number one we look at is
viral
second we look is hype and really what
hype is is one through five how excited
are we to build this we all live one
life so go work on things that you're
excited about and if you're not hyped
you probably should not be working on it
number three this is a little bit more
relevant to appsumo.com
but it's something i want you to think
about for yourself which is how does
this help your goals so for appsumo.com
we're building these appsumo original
tools which are lightweight affordable
tools
to help bring new customers into the
appsumo ecosystem so that's something
for us i don't know if it's as relevant
for you
and the last one is ease so eases how
easy is it to build because if you can
build something that's a lot easier and
get the same results
why not do that so on a scale of one to
five how quickly can you actually
develop that product
so we actually ranked all these
different tools and all these different
ideas things that i was excited about
the team didn't want to do
but we ended up doing a scheduling tool
just like calendly or doodle maybe you
guys have heard of tools just like that
so again i have to say this one more
time creating a framework like this is
critical critical so we all have the
same amount of time
so you got to use some structure or ways
that you can prioritize it will give you
the highest return on your time
a lot of times i see a lot of
entrepreneurs working on small available
markets so go
figure out what problems you can work on
that have a huge amount of potential
customers
so step two looking at negative reviews
who wants to be negative
but so now it's how do we take
titacal.com the scheduling tool and make
it a unique snowflake
so you know you've got to know what you
stand for and this is something that's
really critical as you're building any
business out there
what are you going to say no uh too so
what that means is that you are very
clear who
and what your product is for and the
more you know how to say no to the other
things the more your product is going to
be focused and successful
so what we did is we went online and
read every single review of all the
products
and looked for a lot of the negative
reviews and then secondly we thought
about what do we want
in our own scheduling tool that's not
being provided in these other
alternatives so with all these different
ideas david kelly who's the general
manager of appsumo originals
put together a one pager and i'm just
going to highlight a few of the key
things here
but one of the main things that i think
helped make david and the appszoom
originals team so successful
is that they only gave themselves 30
days or less to build a product
so many of you guys have out there have
been like well i'm researching i'm
talking
and because you're expanding the amount
of time available you're taking all that
time so let me your time in whatever
business you're running
so in this google doc i think number one
is what's our goal and our goal is to
create a simple calendar scheduling app
for entrepreneurs and small business
owners so what are you building
and who is it for the other things that
are really interesting is what are the
key features that are going to make our
product differentiated so one was making
it more affordable and two
being able to have people pay for
scheduling so if you wanted to meet with
me
it's like tidy calicon blah and you pay
ten dollars and then we can set up a
meeting detailed information about what
we're building and what we're not
building
made it really tight for the team to
build it within 30 days
all right so step three is designing a
mock-up so if you do not have any money
or any technical skills at this point
but you have an idea for a business
i highly recommend you don't do any of
the stuff i'm about to tell you
what the hell are you guys talking about
so yes i encourage you instead of doing
mockups and finding developers and
complaining you don't have a logo
or a website i encourage you to go find
customers
so the problem we're solving is helping
people schedule things right
you don't need any software you can
actually just go be someone's assistant
and do their scheduling for
them because what the problem is is that
you're if you go spend all this time and
money building software
and then you hope you can find customers
i don't know why this is hoping to find
customers this is hope
guess what it's gonna be freaking hard
so go and actually do the work get
customers and then bring the software to
them too many people do it the other way
and they make a lot of mistakes but if
you know you have customers or you can
start doing customers in parallel
with building this stuff i think it's
going to be really successful for you so
for us we know that we have the
appsumo.com audience our sumo links that
we can promote this to we know that
calendaring is popular with our
customers
for us it's like okay we have a customer
base we can promote this to here is v1
of what our scheduling tool looked like
and we're using adobe online you can use
a lot of other tools i'm going to
recommend a few in just a second
but this on tidycal.com actually looks
pretty similar to what the final product
is
why because we didn't have a lot of time
to do a bunch of iterations
so you can do scheduling you can pick a
date you can pick a time
you can meet with david kelly here's a
few other tools that you can use
to do some of your mock-ups to figure
out your product whether you have no
team and no skills so number one you can
use a tool like figma.com this is just
like a lighter a more affordable adobe
online
i haven't used it extensively but it's
really really popular and i think a lot
of people can have success with that
secondly this is a more basic pen and
paper approach is just draw each screen
out on a piece of paper
just a piece of paper old school and
what you can do is you can use a service
like
loom.com and make a screenshot or video
of you
talking about the the website and that
is what you're going to give eventually
to a developer to go create
number three you can either use
canva.com i like canva i'm a huge fan of
them
or i use sketch a lot it's owned by
evernote either one of these products is
really easy to do light mock-ups really
really simple really really
basic number four you could just copy an
existing site
but make changes and i did this when
making facebook apps years ago yes so i
saw an app that was called soccer fan
and i sent it to a developer i'm like
can you just copy this and call it
hockey fan
and i change everything to hockey so if
you see a calendar tool that looks
pretty similar
make a copy of it and then just start
iterating from there
and the fifth way you can do is using
fiverr.com i was actually shocked
if you go on fiverr.com and you look up
web designers
you can actually type so let me just
show you you can do web designers in
fiverr.com
you could do filtering on budget you
could do filtering on skill level the
main thing here that i'm gonna talk
about for mock-ups as well as
development
is just look at other projects live that
they've done so you can see if they can
do something
like yours now you got your mock-ups
it's time to build so step four
building the product we are blessed
thank you god to have two amazing
developers on the originals team that is
marnie and garrett
and we are hiring if you guys want to
come join us at appszoomer.com careers
if you're an amazing developer
i want to change the world of
entrepreneurship come join us so you're
like noah i don't know how to code
and i'm broke well damn man do i have to
do everything fine
so again if you have no skills if you're
not a designer go get customers and have
them pay you to do their scheduling
yes if you want to see a video where i
show people how to get customers live
that'll be down below
about how to get customers in 15 minutes
so if you don't know how to code there
are four ways to actually solve
getting a developer to help you make
these products live number one is
referrals
so ask your friends ask a network ask
groups you can come join us at
okdurk.com
group and get referrals that is how i
built appsumo a friend of mine referred
a guy named muhammad i'll actually refer
him if you comment
on this video or in the group if you
need a developer next up is upwork.com
the main thing here is that you post a
project and then thousands of people say
hey i want to come do that project
again for everyone that says they wanna
do their project just go look at what
they've already built
don't worry about their code is fancy
and anything like that just worry about
can they get this thing done number
three is existing no code solutions so
if you're building a job board you can
go on appszoom.com and buy a product
called niceboard and actually start your
own job board without having to hire any
developers
there's a lot of pre-built tools that
can actually help get your business off
the ground without any coding so check
it out on appsumo.com and number four
you could start with a google sheet or
google four more air table
so let me just show you an example
jonathan on our team did this which i
thought was amazing
as if you're building a dog walking
marketplace like wag just like take that
for instance
you could create a google spreadsheet
yes for free and we are we're gonna give
it away in the description below
that you can organize the dog walkers
and the dog owners and then just
connecting via google spreadsheet versus
having to worry about coding and
developers and money and all that other
stuff this is free
by the way if you've enjoyed this kind
of behind the scenes thing hit that like
button and make sure you subscribe and
hit that notification bell so you do not
miss another juicy video just like this
okay but how do we actually launch this
bad boy let me show you so step five
is marketing here is our exact marketing
launch plan so my rule of thumb is you
should spend as much time creating as
you do marketing
and ninety percent of entrepreneurs get
this wrong what they do is they build
all this
and then they finally go at the end and
they're like oh where are the customers
crickets so do it in parallel i highly
think that'll make you way more
successful
as you want to build a company there's
two main things as you're doing your
marketing plan is that one have a goal
so for us it was to get 200 sales when
we did our launch of our product
and secondly is were all the marketing
activities we're going to do so we can
prioritize them
and so as you can see on our tidy cal
marketing plan it was promote things
from our internal network so we have at
kingsumo.com and sendfox.com
promote to our own audience through that
social media
emails twitter linkedin and so we said
hey here's all the marketing channels
we're gonna do
and hopefully it'll get us the 200
target that we're trying to hit which we
ended up hitting and i'll show you our
revenue in just a little bit but also we
organize hey
did we get these things done so one of
the things that if you're failing to
plan your marketing you are planning to
fail
main thing is that set this up it
doesn't have to be this exact method but
make sure you're planning hey when we're
launching i want to sell this many or i
want to get this many sign ups and
here's all the ways i'm going to do it
and it also gives you an important thing
that we're going to talk about next
so step six now that you have your
marketing and everything already ready
it is launch day you've done it give
yourself a pat on the back it's kind of
hard to do that by the way
but i do not believe in hope and
business or surprises i only like
surprise birthdays
so if you are solo or you don't have an
existing audience start recruiting your
beta testers really early in development
for me
i love slack groups for this so i'm
launching a book in two years called
million dollar weekend i have a slack
group where i interact with the audience
help them with all their stuff and then
in two years when i launch my book
hopefully they'll be around to help
participate and buy my product
another thing with launch day is that
don't go spamming reddit and spamming
indie hackers and all these things is
that you have to be a part of the
community and start early
so go get on product hunt go be active
in reddit same thing with facebook
groups
so when your launch date finally happens
you're not that random ass person that
is annoying everyone
again also if you're doing a launch if
you're creating software books or
courses for other business owners you
should 100 launch them
on the brand new appsumo marketplace
that's appsumo.com
it is completely free and we promote you
to over one million entrepreneurs that
is wild
now that you've done this huge launch
you've gone out there you've done all
the marketing activities step seven is
one of the most important things which
is your debrief
so the beginning of your business starts
at the launch this is just the tip of it
uh so to keep track of how well we've
done there's four metrics with tidycal
that we are monitoring
i encourage you when you're running any
type of business actually have less
metrics way too many people have so many
things that distracts them so have less
metrics you're tracking
number one that we tracked is total
number of signups number two is total
number of
brand new customers to app sumo number
three is
how did the marketing channels that we
tried actually worked out so we know
which ones to do more of
and which ones to do less of or you
could do yesa no
yes we could anyway and number four what
is the actual overall taco rating of the
product is given by our customers
so we can figure out how to actually
improve the product and again one of the
things i said
earlier is that if you do your marketing
channels do a debrief of which channels
work for you did linkedin actually bring
you customers did email marketing bring
in customers
did your actual product do the viral
thing that you thought was gonna happen
uh make sure to stick around in just a
second i'm gonna show you the revenues
over the whole time of this product so
you can get an idea of what our products
do to benchmark for yourself
next up as you're doing your deep breath
this is critical foster a tribe around
your business everyone wants to be a
part of something so interact with the
early customers
let me show you some things that we do
we send an email every single week since
we've launched a product
just kind of giving updates of
everything that's going on in the
business so for you
start a whatsapp group start a slack
group or send emails to your audience
and interact with them
appsumo.com is now almost 11 years old
and i still talk to some of our first
customers just to give an idea about
that
so how much money have we made since
launch i know you want to see those
numbers come on
uh so when we launched the product it
actually did around four thousand
dollars on launch day but what's really
important here is that because we made
the product ourselves
we have an eighty percent profit margin
so almost four thousand dollars
in profit from that and since then as
you can see on the screen it's averaging
somewhere around 500 to 900
a day in revenue and around hundred
dollars a day in profit we built this
product part of ap2 originals to bring
new customers into the appsumo ecosystem
so that was our original purpose for
that
you have to build your own product for
your own reasons here's a summary and a
monthly plan for you to launch your own
product
week one come up with all the ideas and
problems you want for yourself
now pick one and make a tight feature
list of what you actually need to build
within 30 days make sure you limit your
time and money
week two do your mockups and start
finding customers now don't do it at the
end don't be that girl or guy
week three go get your developer on
upwork or you can do referrals and we
quattro
do your launch i'm happy and i'm proud
of you for actually making it this far
so whether it's a software like tidycal
leave a comment with what you're
actually building so i can actually buy
and support you in one of my upcoming
office hours i do them almost every
single friday
make sure you subscribe and hit that
notification bell so you don't miss that
by the way let me just do a quick
showing of the product if you're trying
to actually do scheduling with other
people
highly recommend you check out tidy cal
it is free to use or 19
one time for life well i'm actually
using it for my scheduling for my
interviews for my podcast it's really
nice to send them a tidy cowling
they can schedule it it's really really
lightweight and it gets the job done
so if you've liked this video you are
going to love my million dollar weekend
video where i show you how i would start
a backyard office business in
under 48 hours i'm gonna see you out
there and i love you
