Serve Tip: Mastering The Slice Serve
Summary
TLDRThis video tutorial delves into the nuances of tennis serving techniques, focusing on how to hit a serve down the tee, a flatter serve, and a slice serve out wide. It emphasizes the importance of controlling the ball's direction using different spins and highlights the subtle differences in body positioning, string angle at contact, and the toss. The video aims to help players, particularly those at an intermediate to advanced level, improve their serve consistency and effectiveness by adjusting one key element at a time, avoiding the pitfalls of telegraphing intentions to the opponent.
Takeaways
- 🎾 Different spins on a serve can help direct the ball to specific targets.
- 🏆 Players with a strong skill level can hit flat, slice, and kick serves effectively.
- 🎯 Serving down the tee requires a flatter trajectory and earlier pronation.
- 🤸♂️ To serve down the tee, focus on hitting through an imaginary football upright.
- 🔄 Hitting different spins simplifies the serve by adjusting only one aspect: the string angle at contact.
- 🚫 Tossing the ball out wide can telegraph your serve's direction to the opponent.
- 🧍♂️ Opening the body while serving can lead to a less effective down-the-tee serve.
- 🔍 In slow motion, the body position and toss location for different serves are almost identical.
- 📐 The angle of the strings at contact is crucial for directing the ball.
- 👐 Pronating earlier in the serve results in a flatter trajectory and hitting towards the back of the ball.
- 🌀 Pronating later and leading with the edge gives more slice and helps direct the ball out wide.
Q & A
What are the three different spins discussed in the video?
-The video discusses hitting a serve down the tee, a flatter serve, and a slice serve out wide.
How does hitting different spins help a player control the serve?
-Hitting different spins allows players to direct the serve more effectively to specific targets, such as the forehand or backhand side of the opponent.
What is the main difference between serving down the tee and serving out wide with a slice?
-The main difference lies in the angle of the strings at contact, which determines the direction and spin of the ball.
Why is it beneficial to focus on adjusting only one aspect of the serve for beginners?
-Focusing on adjusting one aspect simplifies the process, leading to a more consistent serve and reducing the complexity of making multiple adjustments.
What are the risks of tossing the ball out wide when serving?
-Tossing the ball out wide can telegraph the player's intentions to the opponent and may cause the player to open their body too early, making it difficult to serve down the tee.
How does the body position and toss location differ between the flat serve and the slice serve?
-The body position and toss location are almost identical for both serves, with the primary difference being the angle of the strings at contact.
What happens when pronation occurs earlier in the serve down the tee?
-When pronation occurs earlier, the player becomes more extended, hitting more towards the back of the ball and creating a flatter serve.
How does pronating later affect the serve when hitting a slice out wide?
-Pronating later and leading with the edge for a longer time gives more slice and helps direct the ball out wide.
What is the importance of maintaining a consistent body position during the serve?
-Maintaining a consistent body position helps in achieving a more consistent serve and makes it easier to disguise the intended direction of the serve from the opponent.
How does the video demonstrate the subtle differences between the two serves?
-The video uses slow motion to show that while the body position and toss location are similar, the angle of the strings at contact is what creates the subtle differences in the serve's direction and spin.
Outlines
🎾 Serving Techniques and Spin Control
This paragraph discusses the nuances of tennis serving, focusing on three different spins: flat, slice, and kick serve. It emphasizes the importance of spin in directing the serve to specific targets, such as the forehand or backhand side of the court. The speaker explains that while advanced players can execute all three spins, beginners can benefit from mastering one spin to improve serve consistency. The paragraph also highlights the risks of serving wide, including telegraphing intentions to the opponent and difficulty in controlling the serve. The speaker demonstrates the serving techniques, noting the subtle differences in body position and string angle at contact, which are crucial for directing the ball effectively.

Highlights
The video discusses the subtle differences between hitting a serve down the tee, a flatter serve, and a slice serve out wide.
Using different spins can help direct the serve and control it to the designated target.
Strong players (4.5 and above) can hit all three different spins, but beginners can benefit from focusing on one type of spin.
As a right-handed player, serving down the tee involves hitting a flatter serve and pronating a little bit earlier.
To serve down the tee, the player should be quite extended, aiming to hit through an imaginary football upright.
The differences between the toss and body are minimal; the key difference lies in the angle of the strings at contact.
Focusing on adjusting one thing (the angle of the strings) can lead to a more consistent serve.
Tossing the ball out wide can telegraph the player's intentions and make it difficult to serve down the tee.
In the flattest serve, pronation happens earlier, leading to a more extended swing and a flatter hit.
In the slice serve, the edge leads a bit longer, giving more slice and helping direct the ball out wide.
The body position and toss location for both serves are almost identical, with the main difference being the angle of the strings at contact.
The direction of the strings at contact determines where the ball will go.
The video includes slow-motion demonstrations to show the similarities and differences between the two serves.
The video aims to help players understand how to control their serve direction with subtle adjustments.
Transcripts
all right so in this video i'm going to
show you the subtle differences between
hitting a serve down the tee wearing a
flatter serve and hit a slice serve out
wide and i find that for a lot of
players it's very effective to help you
to direct the surf if you want to go to
the forehand the backhand focusing on
using different kinds of spins now some
players especially strong four fives and
above they certainly have the ability to
hit all three different spins whether
it's flat slice and kick to all the
different targets but hitting different
spins can really help you in the
beginning to help you direct that serve
and and really control it to the
designated target
as a right-handed player to serve the
sir hit the serve down the t you're
going to focus on hitting a flatter
serve where you're going to pronate a
little bit earlier and you'll be a
little more extended heading towards the
back of the ball now to do this you want
to be
quite extended like you're hitting
through imaginary football upright so
i'm just demonstrating here i'm not
going to jump just to try to show you
here
what this looks like
so that's to serve down the tea
now i'm gonna hit that same serve and
i'm gonna serve it out wide working on a
slice
you can see
and i'll show you in slow motion there's
very little differences between the toss
and the body the differences is where
the strings are pointing at contact what
i like about that is that you only have
one thing to worry about if you're
starting to think about where the toss
needs to be where the body needs to be
where the strings need to be you're
having to adjust three different things
if you can just focus on adjusting one
thing you're going to develop a more
consistent serve also the danger of
tossing the ball out wide
number one is you will telegraph to your
opponent what you're going to do and
also often people end up opening the
body trying to erect with the chest
again you give it away but then when
you're when your body is opening
it makes it very difficult to serve down
the tee because the body will pull the
ball all right so it's very important so
as you can see we're going to take a
look at in slow motion again take a look
and see how similar the two serves are
and we just make it a subtle difference
with the angle of the strings of contact
so let's take a look at that
so over here on the right we have the
slice serve going out wide on the left
we have the flattest serve going down
the tee if we stop these two at contact
you'll see that the body position the
toss location are almost identical to
see some subtle differences where it's
the angle of the strings at contact
that's going to help direct the ball
remember wherever the strings are
pointing at contact that's where the
ball is going to go also if we go back
just a little bit you'll see on the left
on the flattest serve the pronation
happens a little bit earlier
where on the right hand side the edge is
leading a little bit longer so by
pronating earlier on the left
you end up being more extended getting
hitting more towards the back of the
ball and a little bit flatter when the
right hand side you're starting to
pronate a little more through contact
giving a little more slice but also
helping direct that ball out wide
let's take a look at these again in slow
motion
