Transcripts
what happens if we don't have careful
tourism planning
natural environments are destroyed
wildlife is displaced
cultures are diluted money leaks out of
the country
crime increases gentrification occurs
these are just a few of the negative
impacts of tourism that can occur
as a result of a lack of careful tourism
planning tourism planning is so
important
but unfortunately there are lots of
travel and tourism businesses and
entrepreneurs
around the world who see dollar signs
and jump in head first
but they don't think about the
consequences of their actions
this is a problem a big problem
my name is dr hayley stainton from
tourismteacher.com and today i'm going
to teach you
all about why tourism planning is
important this video should be helpful
to all sorts of people
including travel and tourism students
business entrepreneurs government bodies
and tourism workers if you do fit into
any of those categories please do leave
me a comment below let me know who you
are
it's great for me to know who's watching
these videos so that i can better tailor
the content for you guys
in the future okay so let's start off by
clarifying
what i mean when i say the term tourism
planning
tourism development is all about the
growth and maintenance of the tourism
industry in a given location
and of course tourism planning is a
really important part of this
on a basic level tourism development can
be defined
as creating strategies and plans to
increase or develop
or encourage tourism for a destination
ultimately the reason why any
destination decides to invest in tourism
is to make
money but it is shocking to see how
often this is
not carefully planned by not planning
not only are the economic benefits not
capitalized upon but there are commonly
a range of negative impacts of tourism
that occur as a result
yes it may take some time to put
together a proper plan
but it's so important here are some
things that should be considered
at the tourism development planning
stage the development and management of
private public partnerships assessing
the competitors to gain competitive
advantage
ensuring strategies enable responsible
and sustainable development
viewing tourism as an interconnected
system and a demand-driven sector
assessing private sector investment and
international cooperation
examining opportunities for tourism
clustering planning for government
involvement now all of these things are
super important and they need to be
carefully planned
so what exactly is tourism planning
according to williams the aim of modern
planning is to seek optimal solutions to
perceived problems
and that it is designed to increase and
hopefully maximize development benefits
which will produce predictable outcomes
and gets in 1987 defines tourism
planning as
a process based on research and
evaluation which seeks to optimize the
potential contribution of tourism to
human welfare and
environmental qualities so those are a
couple of helpful definitions if you do
want to do a little bit more reading
around the subject and if you are a
student or you're planning on investing
money into tourism planning i highly
recommend it i have put together a
recommended reading list which is down
in the comments below okay
so let's move on to the basic stages in
tourism planning tourism planning is no
simple task
and there are many variables to consider
there are also different levels of
tourism planning and policy it's really
important that destinations look at
examples
of tourism development in areas that are
similar to their own this is a great way
for destinations to learn
lessons so they can copy what's been
done well and perhaps not copy
what hasn't been done well for example
costa rica has done really well in
developing a world-renowned eco-tourism
industry
likewise there are some fantastic
examples of community-based tourism in
northern thailand which includes the
famous longneck tribe on the other hand
destinations may wish to avoid
developing tourism industries similar to
areas like cancun or kuta and bali as
these are examples of destinations that
provide little economic benefit to the
local community they show little regard
for the local culture they damage the
natural environment and they cause
increases in crime
gambling and drugs amongst other
negative impacts of tourism on a basic
level the main stages in tourism
development planning
include the analysis of previous tourist
development
evaluation of the position of tourism in
the area including the competition
formulation of relevant tourism policy
by government
the defining of a development strategy
the formation of a program of
action that's pretty helpful list right
well unfortunately i can't take the
credit for this this was actually
written by douglas
pearce who put this together back in
1989 but while i'm on the topic of
helpful resources
if you are finding this video helpful or
interesting so far i would really
appreciate it
if you would hit the like button this
tells youtube that you like my content
and they will then show it to more
people which helps me to be able to grow
the channel and to create more content
just like this
that i can provide to you guys for free
so hit that like button and it's a
win-win for us both
okay so let's get back to the topic what
are the benefits of tourism
planning well there are actually endless
benefits there are so many benefits to
tourism planning seriously
everybody should have good planning but
i'm going to list for you some of the
most
notable and some of the biggest benefits
tourism planning can help to maximize
potential revenue it can reduce economic
leakage
help to preserve culture and heritage
promote cultural understanding
maximize the benefits of tourism to the
local community use money made from
tourism to improve social services and
local infrastructure protects the
natural flora fauna and wildlife
okay so i've convinced you that tourism
planning is a good idea but how do we
actually do this
well the first action point is to
formulate an approach to tourism
planning and there are six
golden rules that we can apply here as
inskeep
kindly outlined for us back in 1991.
goal-oriented there should be clear
recognition of tourism's role in
achieving broad national and community
goals
integrative tourism policy and planning
should be incorporated into the
mainstream planning for the economy
land use and infrastructure conservation
and environment
market driven it's important to plan for
tourism development that trades
successfully in a competitive
global marketplace resource driven
tourism should be developed in a way
that allows stakeholders to build on the
destination's inherent strengths
whilst protecting and enhancing the
attributes and experiences of current
tourism assets
consultative it should incorporate the
wider community attitudes
needs and wants to determine what is
acceptable to the population
systematic tourism should draw on
primary or secondary research to provide
conceptual
or predictive sport for planners
including the experiences of other
tourism destinations
i will go into exactly how we plan for
tourism in a future video but for now
it's important to know and to learn that
planning for tourism
really can make or break a destination
if done well tourism planning can ensure
the longevity of the tourism industry in
the area take good care of the
environment
have positive economic outcomes and a
positive benefit to the community if
done badly
tourism development can destroy the very
environment or culture that it relies on
it can disrupt local economies
cause inflation and other negative
impacts to local people
and businesses i have created a series
of three videos
addressing the positive and negative
impacts of tourism i've talked all about
the environmental impacts of tourism the
social impacts of tourism and the
economic impacts of tourism please do go
and check those videos out because they
really will give you a lot of the
background knowledge behind the things
that i'm talking about in this video
here today as i mentioned before i do
have a reading list
down in the comments below i highly
recommend that you take a look
especially if you are a student studying
this topic or if you are planning on
investing time and money
into tourism planning some of these
texts are super super helpful
and on one final note if you have
watched this video all the way to the
end i'm guessing you found this stuff
useful
please do check out some of my other
videos and make sure you subscribe so
that you get notifications
when new videos are released have a
