Transcripts
Giraffe has been around for like a thousand years,
it has lots of branches, and a new owner, but that doesn't matter to you,
let's check it out, they also have a new location.
Giraffe Hamenofim 8 Herzliyah
Hi. How are you?
Fine.
Enjoy.
They have a machine at the entrance where you can order without a waiter,
sometimes it's good, if the waiters are obnoxious.
You order, sit down and wait.
I hope the waiters here aren't obnoxious.
I haven't been here for 20 years, there was one dish I used to order,
it was called the Spicy Philippine. It takes me back to the 90's,
or the early 2000's.
You think they still have it? They do.
If it's the same taste, I'm going back to my childhood.
Niv Gilboa Restaurant Critique
Hi.
What's this? Water.
Tap water? From the fountain.
What fountain? In the back.
Is it like a drinking water tap, or sewage water?
Not sure. I see.
It has a bit of an after taste. Would you like a cocktail?
You're trying to get me drunk already? If you do want one,
I recommend one of the special ones, like the Thai Green Summer,
based on gin, with lemon grass and cucumber, and some basil.
Kind of sour. Ok, it won't help the score though.
It doesn't matter if I'm drunk or not, on the contrary, when I'm drunk I'm even more strict.
I'll take soda singha too.
It's Thai soda. I'm shocked, it says here "New",
but these are dishes I ate in the year 2000, and liked them. The question is, are they the same.
Let's check it out. The Spicy Philippine.
That was my favorite. It's our best.
I see there are new ones too, let's try some.
I can recommend our banhs, the crispy chicken especially.
Chicken wrapped in yogurt, then the coating,
then they throw it in the chipser and inside the banh. I'm trying to decide between the meat
and the crispy chicken, you say go for the chicken. No question.
More calories, but whatever.
Your cocktail, Thai Green Summer, and Singha Soda.
Thanks, you can take that away, throw it.
Thanks.
Looks nice.
Soft and tasty, and hot.
I think it has like 20 grams of chicken, I know banhs are small,
but the price could have been smaller as well.
As a bite it's great though.
Everything ok? You'll see in the review.
I will. He thinks he can get something out of me?
All my secrets?
Listen,
this is 3 quarters gin, they're either incredibly generous
or they're trying to take me down. I'm drunk after one sip.
This is something small from us.
I don't want it. Tell me, how much gin did you put here?
3 shots instead of one?
You're drunk already? Yes. What did you do?
Wait, what's this? Our taka salad,
from our specials, with zucchini noodles, raw salmon, coriander and shallot onions
and chili. Another $14, thanks.
What can I do? They learned that they can give me free things and I'll end up paying, so why not?
Well, when in Rome...
So hot.
They're crazy.
Watch out. This is a great mixture of flavors, noodles, and you can see the cucumbers,
very fresh and tasty dish, we're on the right track so far.
Even though Giraffe came up with the abomination of serving sushi next to fried noodles,
but 20 years ago we had more tolerance for these kinds of things,
and now it's a tradition. Too bad other places are even trying to imitate it. I prefer my sushi in a Japanese cuisine,
Not on the side.
So I didn't order sushi, even though they've been serving it for 20 years.

There's also a clever way to say thanks.
Here is our Philippine dish, and you have to tell me later if it's the same as it was
in the 2000's, Where are the peanuts?
In the sauce. Now I remember I also asked for rice noodles
and extra peanuts. Do you want more peanuts?
No, I want to remember how it was. Ok.
Thanks.
Last time I had this really was 15 years ago, I remember how stunned I was
when I had real Philippine food and realized it's pretty bad.
It's not nice to make fun of some people's cuisine, but the Philippine kitchen is just terrible.
At least what I tried. This one is suited for the Israeli taste though.
It was...
You know, what am I so exited about? It's not like this is some Wellington beef,
it just fried noodles, and if the recipe is the same, the flavor is the same. And it is.
Brings me back memories of sitting in Giraffe
when the place blew up, there was some gas tank or something, and one of the waiters
was hurt, oh my. I've been there, and I ate this, and it's the same flavor.
And again, this is not Philippine, it's both spicy and sweet,
I think they also added some sugar, coconut and red curry.
What does it matter? It's great.
Perfect for the Israeli taste.
Here are some toothpicks and our dessert menu, I recommend the banana brulee,
our special dessert. THE dessert.
THE dessert? What's wrong with bread pudding?
Nothing. Profiterole, oh my.
How big are the? I'm full.
The brulee is not too big, not too small.
The bread pudding is a bit big.
It would kill me. The banana brulee then, and it's on you.
It's on me.
It's gonna be huge, it's all huge here, no wonder the place is packed,
The Israelis love it, and, don't tell anyone, so do I.
For shame. And it's a chain too.
Banana brulee. You make it here?
Yes. Not in some Giraffe factory?
We do have a factory. You do?
Yes. Restaurants with their own factory...
It's in Petah Tikvah. I would never have come had I known.
Your caramelized bananas, butter sauce...
As I expected. Caramel?
Butter and cinnamon, caramel, and the brulee with a twirl and sugar powder on top.
Too many explanations, thanks.
It didn't make a sound, I wanted to hear the...
Oh my, so sweet, I wanna die. I can't eat something that sweet.
Crazy sweet, the creme, the bananas, so much sugar.
I was sure I was gonna humiliate myself and give them
the best score ever, a chain restaurant, but I guess not, thanks to the dessert.
Well, not thanks to it, but because of it.
Your check, with our afternoon discount.
10%, so that's $6, because the bill is %66.
$3.50 for the soda, the cocktail for $12, the banh for $13,
the salad they gave me, $14,
the spicy Philippine for $19, and $13 for the brulee.
$66. With how big the main dish was
and the 2 starters, it's a couples' meal, so I'm satisfied.
As satisfied as I can be.
Come to think about it, had I ordered the Spicy Philippine today
I would probably say no way, this is sweet, it's not Asian, it's not authentic,
but to get the same flavor I got more than 20 years ago, as precise as addictive as always,
I can't say no to that. All the dishes were just great, so tasty,
except for the sweet dessert. It's great to see a restaurant surviving for so long
and keeping the same level. Great job. 7.5 on our scale.
