prime lenses with a fixed wide aperture
are a great upgrade from the standard
zoom kit lens that usually come bundled
with your new camera unless you want to
go full manual focus and autofocus prime
lens can run you quite a few bucks
thankfully for sony shooters the yungnuo
50 millimeter f 1.8 with auto focus is
perfect for the budget minded without
skimping out on quality

visual stories with the best filmmaking
tips tricks and techniques back nearly a
decade ago when i was a proud canon
shooter using the legendary canon 5d
mark iii and the super handy canon 70d
one of my first gear purchases was a 50
millimeter prime lens the canon ef 50
millimeter f 1.8 has its own legendary
status as it produced optically
beautiful images while being at a very
accessible price point it was even
nicknamed the thrifty 50 because for a
good price you get a wide f 1.8 aperture
for beautiful portraits bokeh action and
of course there's that autofocus a lot
of the other affordable prime lenses
these days usually sacrifice electronic
autofocus for simple manual focus to
keep the low cost you have wide aperture
performance that's why it was a nice
surprise for mung nuo a chinese company
probably best known for their popular
led lighting and camera flashes to
release a 50 millimeter prime lens with
auto focus functionality now let's take
a deeper dive into it
the yn 50 millimeter f 1.8 s d a dsm
from yung nuo is a compact sized prime
lens designed for the aps-c format sony
e-mount mirrorless cameras and provides
a 75 millimeter equivalent focal length
which is perfect for portrait shooting
it has a 7 blade diaphragm which
contributes to its smooth bokeh quality
there is a digital stepping motor that
offers notably quick and precise
autofocus performance and the lens
focusing mechanism has been designed
internally which means the external
length of the lens doesn't change which
is handy for keeping a consistent
balance when using a gimbal
the chrome plated metal lens mount is
durable and accurate for a secure fit
with the camera body and gold-plated
contacts help to ensure consistent
communication between the lens and
camera
it has a 49 millimeter size filter
thread if you want to attach things like
neutral density filters which is a must
when shooting outdoors with such a wide
aperture
lastly the usb port is incorporated for
updating the lens firmware

now the optical quality of this lens is
very surprising especially for this
price range it has amazing sharpness
from the center to the edges even at the
widest aperture of course it gets even
sharper when you step down the aperture
most cheaper lenses usually suffer from
softer edges and even a softer center
when at the widest aperture but this
tiny beast packs quite the punch in
terms of sharpness and don't get me
wrong it ain't raises sharp like a sigma
but you're definitely getting more value
with the sharpness alone since this is a
prime lens it has a relatively wide
aperture of f 1.8 which means you can
achieve an attractive depth of field
look blurring the background from the
subject making this a great portrait
lens the bokeh quality is also very
decent with evenly circular globs
also the wide aperture allows you for
better low light performance which
indeed this does well
another thing that you're getting value
for this price is the inclusion of the
auto focus and the performance isn't too
bad although it has its flaws too as
i'll mention later in the cons
otherwise when it comes to still
photography or even videography the
autofocus handles pretty well with
decent speed and accuracy which is great
for beginners or those adverse to manual
focusing
the size of the lens is actually pretty
compact and may even look too small on a
rigged out camera body but if your setup
is bare and minimal then the lens looks
the part with smaller mirrorless bodies
like my a65000
the lens is also very light because of
its mostly plastic build making it more
ideal for travel i found myself on more
than one occasion casually popping it
into my shoulder bag
i don't see this too often with camera
lenses where you're able to update the
firmware of the lens via a usb port on
the lens itself
what this means is the lens can
potentially improve in performance over
time for example after doing the latest
firmware update i did notice a
considerable improvement in auto focus
performance ironing out its earlier
flaws so yeah if you do get this lens it
is a must to update your firmware
not every budding photographer or
beginning filmmaker has the dough to be
able to buy the latest and biggest
lenses let alone multiple lenses but
this jung noor 50 millimeter f 1.8 has
just the right price making it
accessible to many people yet without
falling into that category where cheap
means crap
what you get here is in a portable lens
packed with some quality features
now for the cons admittedly the mostly
plastic build quality does give off a
cheap feel it might not be sturdy or
solid enough if you were to drop it
although in fairness it seems to be a
slightly tougher plastic than the
plastic used on the original nifty 50
from canon the focus ring uses a wide
electronic focusing system meaning
there's no real tactile feel when it
comes to fine-tuned manual focusing it's
loose and just spins on forever to be
honest this won't be too much of a
problem since most people buying this
lens are getting it for its auto focus
the autofocus is definitely the selling
point of this lens but don't expect it
to be smooth and responsive as the
legendary sigma trio prime lens there is
a tendency for this lens to hunt and
breathe quite a bit before it locks
focus onto the subject and sometimes not
often it gets completely lost throwing
the whole image out of focus
although i did find this problem to be
vastly improved by installing the
updated firmware so don't worry too much
with the out of the box auto focusing
performance because the firmware can fix
it quite a bit this jungno a 50
millimeter lens uses a digital stepping
motor for its autofocus function which
is similar to the one used in the old
thrifty canon 50mm f 1.8 just like that
canon lens you can hear a slightly
audible whirring motor sound when your
camera hunts for focus this can be a
problem for video shooters but can be
avoided by using external audio
recording rather than using your own
camera or built-in mic with the
surprising image quality and sharpness
of this lens unfortunately it's let down
by some pretty nasty chromatic
aberration when shooting in high
contrasting compositions or aiming
against the sun although this can be
remedied easily in software like adobe
lightroom
also flareon can get wild when aimed
directly at the sun or light source so
you might want to be wary of that the
long sun hood does help quite a bit
the last drawback that you might find
with this lens is that it has no optical
image stabilization which means on a
camera like the a6 300 or the a6400 that
doesn't have ibis or in-body lens
stabilization you'll get some pretty
shaky amateur looking shots and micro
jitters and video but if you have a
camera body like the a6500 or a600 or
you own and use a gimbal then this
shouldn't be a deal breaker for you
on the sony ecosystem there really
hasn't been a thrifty 50 lens like the
canon does the closest competitor is
sony's own fe 50mm f 1.8 for the
full-frame cameras which doesn't exactly
come with a thrifty price tag
then there's the more older yet superior
50 millimeter f 1.8 with built-in oss
image stabilization for aps-c crop
sensors like the a6000 series the gold
standard in the spoken range is probably
the ultra sharp and both delicious sigma
56 millimeter f 1.4 which expectedly is
even more pricier
and for comparing price range than the
seven artisans 55 millimeter f 1.4 mark
ii and also the super wide cam land 50
millimeter f 1.1 mark ii but all these
lenses are completely manual they have
no auto focus and optically this juno
lens still comes out as a slightly
sharper lens than these
[Music]
the jumino 50 millimeter f 1.8 d a dsm
is one hell of a nifty lens that fills
in that particular consumer niche with
just the right balance of value and
performance if you're just starting as a
professional photographer or
videographer then this is a great lens
to start with having enough focal reach
for covering most portraits or event
needs for budding filmmakers and content
creators this is also a good find
particularly handy for shooting b-rolls
talking heads and even gimbal shots
thanks to the video autofocus and if
you're just a hobbyist or want to step
up in your family photo taking and video
capturing then this fits perfectly for
your needs and family friendly budget
too if you're really interested in this
