Outlines
🤽 Exploring the Complexity of Jiu-Jitsu Moves
The script begins with a conversation about the countless techniques in Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art known for its grappling and submission moves. The speaker, a white belt with three stripes, acknowledges the challenge of quantifying the number of moves due to the vastness and complexity of the sport. The speaker visits Elevate MMA to observe a typical Jiu-Jitsu class, starting with warm-ups and progressing to learning specific techniques like the arm triangle and saddle defense. The class also covers variations of techniques and submissions, leading to a discussion about the difficulty of counting individual moves in such an information-dense sport.
🔍 The Quest to Quantify Jiu-Jitsu Moves
The speaker embarks on a quest to determine the number of moves in Jiu-Jitsu, breaking down moves into categories such as submissions, positions, takedowns, and passes. After an initial attempt to list moves from memory and online research, the speaker consults with coaches and practitioners to gain insight into the number of moves. The conversation reveals that while there are basic moves, the variations and situational adaptations make it challenging to count them precisely. The speaker also contemplates the idea of counting only moves that gain points in sport Jiu-Jitsu to simplify the task.
📚 Researching the Depth of Jiu-Jitsu Techniques
The script continues with the speaker's ongoing research into Jiu-Jitsu techniques, including submissions and takedowns. The speaker consults various sources, including elit sports.com, which lists over 600 moves. The speaker also discusses the difficulty of differentiating between similar moves and the potential for infinite variations. Conversations with coaches and practitioners highlight the subjective nature of technique counting and the importance of understanding the principles behind the moves rather than just the moves themselves.
🤷♂️ The Challenge of Counting Jiu-Jitsu Variations
The speaker grapples with the complexity of counting Jiu-Jitsu moves, especially when considering the numerous variations and transitions. The script includes discussions with Jiu-Jitsu practitioners about their personal techniques and how they approach the sport. The speaker realizes that the number of moves is not as important as the principles and foundations of Jiu-Jitsu. The conversation also touches on the difficulty of creating entirely new moves due to the vast existing repertoire of techniques.
📈 Developing a System to Estimate Jiu-Jitsu Moves
The speaker develops a system to estimate the number of Jiu-Jitsu moves by considering offensive moves, defensive options, and counters. After extensive research, the speaker arrives at a specific number, 3,930, by multiplying the number of offensive moves by an average of defensive options and counters. This number is presented as a representation rather than an exact count, acknowledging the limitations and the dynamic nature of Jiu-Jitsu techniques.
🎯 Reflecting on the Essence of Jiu-Jitsu Beyond Techniques
In the final paragraph, the speaker reflects on the deeper principles of Jiu-Jitsu, suggesting that the essence of the martial art lies beyond the techniques themselves. The speaker emphasizes the importance of understanding the principles and foundations that guide the techniques. The conversation concludes with the idea that Jiu-Jitsu is not about memorizing a set of techniques but rather about the ability to apply and adapt these techniques in various situations.

how many moves do you think there are
in how many moves moves how many
moves there's one for sure how many
moves that's by clicking
on I think we're going to be in for
quite a quite a
week millions and millions of people of
all shapes and sizes are participating
and competing in this martial art where
anything goes that's not true true it's
not anything but if there's a part of
the body that you can make pain happen
in they try it locks holds chokes
takedowns depending on where you train
what many consider the ultimate
grappling martial art is also the most
information dense sport possibly ever
and we're going to figure out why and
I'm not going to be able to figure out
why by myself I'm a white Bel hey I got
I got three stripes but I don't see
anybody else asking this question our
first stop is Elevate MMA a local MMA in
Jiu-Jitsu gym near me and today is no g
day now in any given Jiu-Jitsu class
typically you'll start off with a
warm-up which is where we find our first
move a sprawl some people took some
shots that's another move then we played
a game where we mix the two together if
you get knee tapped you have to
sprawl yeah consider my knees tapped
after warm-ups most gyms pivot to
teaching a technique really really
common series that you're going to see
his arm triangle showing up against a
leg lock opportunity right first things
first we're just going to practice our
basic saddle defense here we're
splitting legs and Escape our knee line
it's really really simple as he's trying
to catch that heel I'm hiding the heel
and straightening my leg I'm going to
find that knee right there I'm going to
post here and I'm going to build up I'm
flattening him out I want him on his
back for this if he stays on his side
we're going to talk about that next okay
if I'm doing the full finish I'm
probably going P him here and I go right
there there we go right in that way it's
uncommon after that to teach some sort
of variation maybe the person you were
trying the first technique on did
something differently and now you have
to adjust typically you'll see two to
three of those within a training session
now our first question is well how many
of these were
moves uh yes here's one two we actually
did this in the warmup too this snaap
down to a headlock is that two moves
itself then we practiced one technique
and two variations that's we're up to
seven but here's the thing we had to do
more in order to get to that submission
in the first place we had to escape this
leg trap and then make a pass over to
their back so is that two more moves so
what are we up to nine now are those
moves cuz if they are I'm in trouble but
I don't have time to be in trouble cuz
next We
[Music]
Roll what else a sweep what else could
be a move a faint a faint ooh is a faint
a move you have to know what everything
is first and then you can kind of reduce
back down to like okay it's just ideas
and Concepts and feelings yeah so you're
saying that knowing nothing isn't the
place to
start yeah kind of what about a three
strip white
belt no don't let you down there also as
I do with all my videos an unedited
version of this training session and the
rest of them that I do in this video
will be on my membership page it's $2.99
a month and I post all the awesome
detail these instructors go into which
would probably make this video 4 hours
if I didn't cut it out you hit the join
button down below and become a yellow
belt member to get
access how many moves do you think are
in
oh coach says a million million maybe is
there a way to count the submissions
even I think so I think you could
definitely count like families of
submission there's probably like seven
or
eight oh yeah seven or eight kind of
main categories of submissions I would
say okay and then from there there's
ways to do those submissions from
different places yeah and then that's
where the the branches get real
crazy oh you wanted me to do
[Music]
that what is the CL
for oh that was a move okay a move there
were a few maybe only one of them were
successful you
know which is 100% not how it works but
it gave me an
idea same move as before doesn't count
doesn't count would it be easier for me
to only use moves that gain points in
Jiu-Jitsu I think the answer is yes but
that's not what we're here for we're not
here for the easy way
out which is quite
unfortunate so that was kind of brain
breaking I don't
I don't really know where to go from
here I I'll figure out something for you
guys though I promise I'll give you a
number I'll give you my guess is
somewhere around a
th but gosh I guess it could be so much
more than that too
okay so I think my best bet is to break
the moves down into categories obviously
like
submissions positions takedowns passes
actually you know what I think
I'm anything you get points for but then
we lose like the whole then we just make
it about sport Jiu-Jitsu I just realized
I haven't even googled
this elit sports.com says more than 600
okay let's just start to list some off
right now um armar rear naked choke
Kimora Americana Dar leg lock I feel
like there's a bunch of types of leg
locks
um you got the guillotine bow and arrow
cross collar and I'll be honest I've
already started Googling i' I got like
12 moves in and was like okay let's
let's just start googling okay so far
just doing wait how did I miss so
many this guy says there's 77
submissions gold BJJ
[Music]
so I think I just found our connection
that's going to help us put this whole
thing
together what's up hey what's happing
man um I'm on a bit of a quest yeah so
far I've done one day of research and
all of my answers have pointed to it's
impossible to
know but I I think that you could help
me okay I'll do my best okay perfect so
I think some things that some some tools
I guess without making this more
complicated um four basic positions and
then lots of variations of those right
um each one has a good and a bad or a
positive and a negative or Superior
inferior right so right and Eli did what
most good coaches try and do they try
and simplify it to make it as as uh
palatable as possible but that's not
what I'm here for I want answers how
many moves do you think there are
[Music]
ah man I
honestly would say infinite moves it's
either a transitional movement or it's a
submission those are those are moves you
know then what what constitutes
technique and then how much can that te
technique be a variable of the same
technique until it becomes a new
technique this throw looks almost
identical to this throw but because of
the HP placement foot placement grip
attachment whatever now it's actually
become this one and so you know if you
look at like OA Escape you know are you
trap in the arm like this are you
wrapping the arm are you putting a two
onone are you you know so there you can
have 10 different variations ofas game
yeah so I
I is I don't think I have oopa on the
list is that a
submission I don't know what
ho I think I'm in a good place to move
forwards now I'm going to get to work
going to do some research and I'll get
back to you God speak awesome also that
good place is on the ground I've been
I've been I've been in my Jiu-Jitsu
position this whole time o not going to
lie I've had some bad jokes that one
there just something about the delivery
of that one maybe I shouldn't try
standup
comedy sit down comedy
though it's day
three I have
nothing I think ultimately gosh this
these cicas
are absolutely
insane I am feeling less than optimistic
we're going to go to another Jiu-Jitsu
rolling session and I just want some
sort of hint of a possibility of a
smidget of an answer that can hopefully
one
day provide a
glimmer of a possibility that I can get
this answer
person just doing the little management
right trying to stay your ass stay a
little heavy be a little under the way
try to get chest to chest every you want
L the person Bottom's not doing their
job right I'm here at Nal V I'm going to
f sit up hold them into to me right and
try to get underneath their hips as much
as possible you guys going to find if
you get lazy and you don't really hold
them or set up enough they end up
getting you flat chest to chest here and
just like we did with our first class we
went through warmup we learned some
techniques and then and I'm assuming
we'll have variations to go with that
too
[Music]
okay so I'm I'm trying to do like I
consider this like a resource project
I'm trying to figure out how many moves
are in Jiu-Jitsu uh there's like no
number it's okay so infite it's infinite
I kind of I kind of like have to have a
number you have to have a number
[Music]
let's say submissions how many
submissions do you think you utilize in
a match three or four okay I'm just
spamming three or four over and over
again and I end up in different spots
maybe I'll take things to get there but
I'm just working back my way to get back
to usually three or four
[Music]
if you had to guess how many go I would
say you're probably dipping into like
you know 2 to 3,000 o I would think you
know so if we start off in Mount you
have your armbar right you have
Americana right you have your head and
arm choke you have Ezekiel right noi EZ
for going to variations yeah and
impressively Brandon did this for quite
a while he named quite a few techniques
but he didn't name infinite techniques
which is at least a sign that maybe I
can come up with a number right it's
possible cuz you have the same like
chest to chest feel
[Music]
exactly whether you hit it or not what's
the weird of submission that you were
like I found myself in this I don't
practice it often does that ever happen
the the one you were
just there's so many submissions he like
is ankle locking
[Music]
himself do you promote by the number of
moves that somebody knows like is it
like Judo it's a little bit different
for everybody right some people I base
off of how well they can do a fewer
amount of moves okay some people I do
base it off of like how many moves they
know if I have like a 65-year-old dude
who doesn't really compete and like has
a hard time really I'm wiing him yeah me
too me too me too but yeah it's like I
can't really gauge like you know how
skilled or how much they progress based
on how they're going against the other
20-year-olds in here it's like okay they
they understand like that whole position
and they understand like every pathway
for that position so they understand
Jiu-Jitsu have you ever been doing
something and think that you created a
move oh you know I was just talking
about that today um I I think it's like
kind of impossible to create something I
think you can like renovate sure but
like innovating a move is probably
almost impossible at this point okay I
don't like I wouldn't say impossible but
I would say pretty close which I don't
even know if that's a good or a bad sign
it's a good sign cuz nobody's going to
be making up moves while I'm trying to
count that would be annoying but it's
bad news because well that means there's
so many you can't come up with any more
there's more drops of sweat coming off
my face right now than there are moves
in
[Music]
Jiu-Jitsu okay so I'm between training
sessions I had a thought I think
takedowns will be the easiest one to
quantify
because Brazilian jiu-jitsu is pretty
much confirmed to have come
from Judo right hear me up now in kakon
Judo there are 67 throws well we can
fairly
assume that there's at least 67 throws
so what I'll also do is I'll cross
reference a lot of the best BJJ guys
right now in your average gym are former
College wrestlers is it fair to assume
that a lot of those throws and take
Downs are they a part of that curriculum
now I'm going to say yes o here's where
things get a little
difficult um these are all in Japanese
and I don't I don't know how to
translate the
Japanese
like huh it's going to be a little bit
harder to cross reference
these hello yo what
up what up man nothing chilling um hey
question how many types of takedowns are
in wrestling I don't know if off my head
how many um takedown moves they are
because there like variations to
takedowns that like connect to other
like moves that you have to do right um
I am so sick of that word variation if I
hear variation one more time on my kick
a toddler like a like a big one that can
defend itself there's like the obvious
the single leg the double leg fireman's
carry I was just calling to see if off
the top of your head well I don't know
if there's like a common like I'm not
really sure I mean it probably is but
I'm just I'm probably oblivious to it to
be honest I feel like if Judo guys are
kind of nerds about martial arts
wrestling guys are like the opposite
where they're like no just scramble and
then you'll hit something I'll uh I'll
probably see you Wednesday yeah sweet
thank you bye right now with every lock
submission and takeown I can think of
without like large variations uh coming
into play these are the like the main
movements of the technique um I have
117 I think by the time I add positions
[Music]
ah I I missed a j every position in BJJ
please I missed a j now we're up to 131
we still haven't gotten into passes I
think passes is going to be like that's
going to be it's going to be a whole
another world and if I know Jiu-Jitsu
there's a chance that world's
flat okay hopping into a class that's by
an instructor uh that might surprise you
if you're fan of the channel you
recognize this man but you don't
recognize him from what we're about to
[Music]
learn what's up how are you how are you
good to
see all right warm up side side three Ls
I'm not entirely convinced Hardy didn't
know that I was coming and make us do
the absolute hardest warm-up I've ever
done in my entire life and all these
exercises were things that were quite
frankly pretty important to Jiu-Jitsu he
said they've got competitions coming up
but like what kind of competitions
Totten folks around
[Music]
[Applause]
competitions so is a shoulder roller
move is a reverse shoulder roller
move that's a move right that's got to
be cuz you can use it it's a pass
one going to do this bump to an
oosi and one would be that Uchi ankle
piit the first techniques we worked on
were two separate takedowns but it was
kind of more of a flow into two
takedowns luckily for me both of these
were already on my list uh but the
setups weren't
[Music]
how many moves are in that one sequence
you got to close the distance yep we got
to secure the position clinch and like
that clinch is is important by itself
cuz there's a bunch of stuff you can do
from there but then we did the knee bump
which is four uh they counter the knee
bump so if we Count Their moves that's
five and then I'm going to counter with
a front throw or I'm going to counter
with a a leg reap and an ankle pick yeah
and once they hit the ground then we're
going to do a pass X pass then we went
knee on belly so we're at 10 so far and
then we made a decision to move into a
mountain the way we moved into a mount
sort of a move by itself which is 11 and
12 right not individual steps just
individual technique how many moves if
you were like to compete or if you were
to roll and you were like okay this is
going to be my best game how many
submissions do you have that you like
usually go to maybe a different way to
think about it there's five areas of
Jiu-Jitsu okay right there's the take
down skills then you got your top
offensive stuff so if I'm On Top if I'm
in them out like a lot of times your
submissions right yep you've got your
bottom offensive things your uh
submissions and sweeps from your bottom
guard okay you got to be able to pass
the guard right so guard passes are part
of like your top offensive things and
then you've got to have escapes so if
you get stuck underneath somebody how do
you get out I was thinking about
eliminating passes as techniques but if
you have to practice a technique to get
the pass and it is a technique right
which frankly is horrible news for me
because while we started rolling in
mentally I'm so checked out because all
I can think about is how on Earth do you
quantify a scramble a defense for a
specific technique 5 days of this and I
still have no idea what on the Flat
Earth comes
next yes I did double up on that joke
there's so many different types of
passes cuz there's so many different
types of guards you got to deal with and
um if you don't have a technique for it
you can certainly get shut down by some
of these tricky guards that they'll tie
up your feet and they'll tie up an arm
and if you don't have a teque to deal
with it yeah you know you're not going
to
advance think I looking at the
camera but in all of this crazy
frustration I had a bit of a
breakthrough so with each of these
techniques you have this multiplier and
I
I tell me if this makes sense with
actually don't tell me cuz I want to
save it for Eli knight uh I think I
think I've come up with a number oh
really okay a very specific number too
all right and I'm going to say the
number and then you let me know how you
feel about it and then I'll explain how
I got there okay also do you always sit
like this is this like a thing uh I
3,930 wow that's that's a realle
specific
3,930 that is very specific um it is but
it's also based off of kind of
average okay here's how I came up with
that number first off I decided I would
only count the offensive moves takeown
submissions and positions you know you
could argue somewhere positive and
negative but if everything goes
perfectly there's only these 131 moves
there's probably more I couldn't I I did
as extensive research as I could and
then anything more than that is
something your opponent does to stop
what you're trying to do from happening
so hardy and I went through a couple
different options granted this was not
Hardy's idea there's roughly 5 to 10
defensive options you have from most of
these positions some of them more some
of them less for sure someone's trying
to get a triangle in on you someone's
got you in Mount someone's trying to get
an arm bar your legs are trapped deep
half guard each of these offensive
attempts has roughly I say that very
Loosely 5 to 10 different defensive
measures you can take to get out of that
situation uh whether it be a pass an
escape a stall so what I did was with
each offensive move I had the 131 I
multiplied that by six and then from
those counters we come up with the
variations because if somebody instead
of lying flat on their back decides to
sit on their should older well we have a
variation of the same thing that we
would have done before I multiplied by
five for those counters that we would
counter their counters with I think
after that it resets and it becomes zero
and you start from a new technique or
position or pass is this number perfect
no absolutely not but I think it is a
good representation of how quickly
things get out of hand numbers wise well
right now I mean just right off the bat
I'm um the locks themselves yeah it's I
mean there's like 25 there so I would
definitely say got to get those numbers
those are rookie numbers those numbers
there's only so many ways to lock a
joint sure right so I mean it it the
classification the then it it it matters
then okay not what the lock is doing but
how you got there so that's what that's
why these techniques change ask not what
your lock can do for you yeah I don't
have a problem with it as it is do you
think the number
3,930 is too much or too little cuz when
I think about it like how many like
could you sit there and name 3,930
things uh yeah you give me long enough I
could do that also I wanted to be clear
I don't want multipliers to be a thing
that like lives on after this we cut it
after after this this is not like
something I want to be my claim to I
don't want it I'm just saying for the
specific purposes of BJJ Fanatics no go
see CS tutorial on systematically
multiplying BJJ positions you can take
whatever you do double it yes I think
what's interesting that I found is that
Jiu-Jitsu is not about
numbers no it's not even about for me
it's not even about techniques I mean
because like you what are you
quantifying quantifying techniques right
and I think everything is a a position a
submission or a transition that's how I
usually break it down yeah um you know
and just so it Rhymes and has the
alliteration and the transitions can be
anything it can be escapes reversals
sweeps even takedowns cuz you're
transitioning from from feet to floor
right so in in that regard it's just a
manner of doing things the technical
approach of something is like okay well
here's the details of how you can do it
to make it more efficient yeah but it's
like okay but it's like soap all right
so follow me okay so Jiu-Jitsu is like
so not enough people use it yes
so it's it's not done until you've
rinsed it away right so like you can
lather your hands up with the soap and
that's not really it's doing its job
it's like once you rinse it away and
it's not any it's not there any longer
that's when it's done this job so the
reason why I think it's like that is
like the techniques are the delivery
system for deeper principles and if you
know how to do something at Jiu-Jitsu
way the Jiu-Jitsu version of Something
the technique doesn't matter right so
you don't you know if you if I think
anything that sets to too hard enrich of
curriculum in the foundation of how you
you get rank or how you advance through
the system is that's already kind of
sealing a nail in the coffin it's like
what you adhere to Beyond everything
else is like you have to memorize these
set of techniques yeah well I mean
everybody's going to memorize the same
thing and it's like okay yeah we're
that's good and it's going to help you
but it's like it's it should be what the
technique does for you and your ability
that transcends those techniques anybody
ever told you you're pretty good at this
no no
never thank you thank oh
man oh yeah and subscribe to his channel
right there get yourself some good
nutrition you know know people are going
to be in the comments like where's the
list I couldn't come up with the
techniques because I don't know enough
so as a white belt I had to go find
information to then present a research
project right so the information I'm
like I I had such a small amount just
make it a contest be like do you think
you can name more techniques than
3,930 yeah that's actually a great point
if you think that there's more than
3,930 make a list I bet there are people
who could do it for sure but the reason
we don't have a list is cuz nobody's
trying to do all that
