What happens when a digital native freak goes on a digital detox? | Anne van der Krol | TEDxHaarlem
Summary
TLDREl hablante comparte su experiencia de una semana de detox digital, un reto que le llevó a vivir sin su teléfono móvil ni computadora. Transcripts
I have arranged to meet a friend of mine
Wouter I chose a nice cafe in town and
I'm proud of myself for fighting this
but without Google Maps but now that I'm
standing in front of this building I
realized that this most definitely
cannot be a cafe and that there is no
way that my friend Valtor will be able
to recognize this place so reach into my
bucket but it's empty because I'm taking
part in an experiment a digital detox a
week without my mobile phone and
computer I was born in the year 1997 the
same year that a Dutch engineer invented
Wi-Fi and the same year that Google was
founded and now 20 years later we can't
imagine her life without Google and
people worldwide are always looking for
an internet connection to get online I
have my first social media page on a
desk a media platform called hives when
I was 11 I had my first smartphone when
I was 12 and by the age of 15 I already
had a Facebook Twitter snapchat and
Instagram account I was continuously
engaging with my hundreds of followers
and I can remember vividly how proud are
lucky I felt when I reached the number
25 thousand tweets I grew up with the
idea that it's normal to be constantly
online and to share your entire life
with unknown others a dear friend asked
me so shall we meet before or after your
digital detox did this mean that I would
vanish from the face of the earth for a
week how was I supposed to manage that
week and am I going to get withdrawal
symptom
there was only one way to find out for
the first time ever I was stepping out
if he ditched the world together with my
fellow students who are also taking a
course from the villain academia at this
a universe that I'm sure done I handed
my mobile phone and computer in five
minutes everything had been locked away
and I thought to myself this went way
too fast
suddenly I'm left empty-handed when I
got home I sue Adam being able to shake
this nervous feeling in my stomach and
it was really starting to annoy me
because how was I supposed to keep
everybody up to date about all the fun
things that are going on in my life
three days later we were celebrating my
dad's birthday at the cool circle about
Amsterdam and I feel ashamed to reveal I
said now we're standing in front of this
building I feel my hands tingling
because I know they want to take a
picture I feel like a junkie who doesn't
know how to deal with the feeling of
emptiness whenever your addiction is out
of reach but the longer were inside the
coma I get when we have found our
receipts I look around me and I see
flash after flash from cameras it
surprises me so many people with a
scream in between them and a beautiful
location we are in and when a choir came
onstage things steadily fell into place
I was so happy that my face wasn't
obscured by my mobile phone I'm actually
there and it seemed to me that I could
hear and see more of what is going on
around me it might be that my senses are
actually functioning better without my
phone present and then I realized that
this was because
I'm now not focusing on the question
what will others think of this later
instead I was focusing on the question
how do I feel about this right now
the digital detox has made me realize
that I was continuously looking for
affirmation affirmation for who I am
what I do and how I look and that this
affirmation was measured in the amounts
of likes received but because of the
detox I now know that a huge amount of
Lights is not what makes us more real or
better or nicer we take our phones
everywhere we go it's the first thing we
reach for in the morning and it's the
last thing we look up before we go to
bed and I travel a lot by train and I
usually play this game with myself I've
got that the eye contact game I try to
leave people straight in the eye but
even in a crowded train
I hardly ever succeed because everybody
is too busy staring at their mobile
devices when I got home after the chill
detox I immediately deleted my snapchat
and Instagram account because I didn't
want to be regulated by it anymore and I
thought to myself if I don't do this now
my phone habits will remain the same but
after a few weeks the social media pages
started to pull me in again and I again
made an Instagram page I read something
about the attention economy taste what I
was doing right now by reselling
Instagram it's exactly what the products
and our phones wants us to do I had
gained so many wonderful insights and I
still downloaded another one of these
apps but these big companies are
fighting for our attention they want
more clicks more likes
and moreit's old habits die hard and the
same goes for addictions and I felt I
needed courage a tremendous amount of
courage to even start a digital detox
and in the end to face the truth about
my addiction but my professor has always
told me what has been learned by
repetition can also be unlearned by
repetition and a few weeks ago I can
deleted my Instagram account I feel I
don't need it anymore and I don't want
it to be a part of my life and right now
I would like to challenge you my wish
for you is to get lost - like I did
before I finally found my friend Wouter
30 minutes after discovering that the
cafe we were supposed to met didn't
exist lose your friends and lose track
of time and Direction show up at your
friend's doorsteps unannounced without
texting them first and find that secret
cafe that doesn't exist in google map
shed later on their program there will
be some time for drinks and I invite you
to take out your phone because many of
you will develop your reach for their
phones so take out your phone and turn
it off so no switch it to silent mode
but really turn it off let's play the
icons get eye contact game all together
and then realize that you do exist even
more than ever thank you
[Applause]
