Best Pot Size For Growing Autos?
Summary
TLDRIn this video, the hosts discuss the optimal pot size for growing auto-flowering cannabis plants. They share their experiences with both three and five-gallon pots, explaining the benefits and drawbacks of each. They found that while three-gallon pots save on soil and space, they require more frequent feeding due to less soil and nutrients. The hosts plan to experiment with five-gallon pots again in their next grow series, aiming to document the differences in plant growth and nutrient needs. They emphasize the importance of adapting to one's own growing environment and learning from personal challenges.

Outlines
🌱 Auto Pot Size Experiments
The speaker discusses their experiments with different pot sizes for auto-flowering cannabis plants. Initially, they started with five-gallon pots using potter's gold soil, which resulted in good growth despite a lack of community knowledge. They then switched to three-gallon pots to save on soil costs, noticing that the plants still grew well without hitting the pot sides. However, they encountered issues with nutrient depletion and the need for more frequent feedings. They plan to experiment again with five-gallon pots to see if the plants can grow longer with less frequent feedings due to the larger soil volume.
🏆 Preparing for the High Again Cup
The speaker expresses excitement about participating in the High Again Cup, a cannabis growing competition. They mention their intention to try growing in a smaller container, which is a new challenge for them. They acknowledge the community's support and feedback, which motivates them to create high-quality content. They also discuss the importance of pot size in relation to the challenges they anticipate facing during the competition. The speaker emphasizes the fun aspect of the competition and their commitment to sharing their experiences, including exclusive content for channel members.

Transcripts
hi again
no i wasn't ready i wasn't ready for that one four three starts at five
hi again what's up guys today we're getting into pot sizes yeah what is the best pot size for autos
what do we do honestly i don't know the best pot size well right now we do three gallons yup so
we'll explain what we've done and why we're doing three gallons but is that the best maybe not is it
the most cost efficient it's a little i feel like it's a cost savings but from what we've learned
like overgrowing starting in five gallons we just started five years the first time we grew autos
uh we started them in five gallon pots and we used potter's gold i believe yeah pretty
much just potter's gold and dude they actually finished out really well for
our very first honestly we didn't really have to do much no issues fed them we top dressed them
twice that's probably why we fell in love yeah we top dressed them twice and you know really they
finished out pretty good and that was growing in the garage very uncontrolled we got mites at one
point we didn't get mites but they weren't really affected it was we had some photos in there like
on the other side and they got it but it never really never got over to the autos because they
were pretty much done by the time those ones got the photos got it but anyways we did we digress
we started in the five gallons and you know honestly that first growth they turned out
pretty good they were a little small i mean we didn't really know a lot and we didn't really
have i didn't know anything about them we had like the blur poles but we were pleased we didn't have
the community to turn to yeah that's what's got us hooked on the auto so i guess like fast forward to
later growing and stuff in the in the tents and the videos started growing out of three gallons
yeah because we thought you know when when we harvested our roots weren't even really hitting
the sides yeah we were like we think we could downsize a little so we actually started to go
to the three grand three gallons and noticed that they didn't even get they didn't get much they
didn't get smaller yeah so we decided that we were gonna save on soil and go with the three gallons
yeah because it does save a lot of soil i mean you can mix two five gallon
things or you can mix three three gallons and still have some extra soil so there's
definitely a cost savings there especially when they just increase the price on our soil
yeah that we get six bucks extra a bag so it's like burning through soil and stuff like that
so i don't know we anyways we switched to the three gallons and they seem to be running great
like you know we're getting plants just as big as the first ones we grew if not bigger and we're
like oh look at this three gallons we're saving they're getting bigger and you know but then we
i think we started encountering other issues that we didn't have in the five gallon agreed
because bigger pot size more nutrients more room for the roots to spread out they can feed longer
off that pot than they could in a three gallon less soil less nuts you have to top dress more you
have to feed more okay and i maybe now that's all kind of hitting me as like that's something that
we didn't really think about and we're getting these bigger autos because we're
getting better environments more controlled we're learning more about the plants
which brings us too yeah i guess which brings us to
the three gallons are great we're saving money with the pots you know and we do have to we have
to feed more so i think that's something we now have to account for that maybe i'm not doing quite
right yet but the plants have been turning out pretty good but i was just gonna say um my next
run i'm actually going to try five gallon again yeah if you guys want to follow our grow series um
we do have a whole series just based on our growth so definitely you want to check that out right
now like i said we're doing three gallons yeah so this next run we're gonna try five gallons
and again see the see it and be able to actually document it yeah and i think what we'll notice
this time when we're actually paying attention is your five gallon pot plant it's going to be able
to grow out much longer with less feeding because we're so used to like oh don't don't give it any
food for the first like four weeks you can pretty much just water them because they're just gonna
live off the soil in there then suddenly they run out of nutrients and your leaves start yelling at
the bottom and then the autos you're like oh dry amendments and you're trying to catch up
thank you i think when we switched the pot size we lost a little bit of something because there
wasn't as much newts there and maybe we were trying to feed on our old schedule so we weren't
giving it enough feed when they need it in the smaller pot size so i feel like that's something
you can expect if you guys are toiling between what pot size should i start my first autos in
three gallons are great you know you're gonna save on soil you're gonna have a smaller
pot size smaller footprint in your tent but you're probably gonna have to feed more because they're
probably gonna burn through the nutrients within your pot faster than a five gallon i agree with
that um so that's again why i think i'm gonna try that next round yeah so we'll do a side by side
in the next five five by five groups i'm excited to show that along with you and also i want to
talk about talking about pot size how much of a challenge it's going to be for the high again cup
um the fact that we have seen some so much stuff going on in just a three gallon with an auto yeah
i am kind of nervous in a way to find out what we're gonna run into during this challenge because
i mean i'm i'm only in it to to just uh yeah we're just having fun yeah i just want to
participate we're putting it on but we're just having fun obviously we don't want to win we we
have some sponsors so there's gonna be prizes but we don't want to win it we want to make sure you
know you guys would what we're definitely going to participate try and grow in a very small container
which we've never done struggling in the pot sizes we're growing right now but we're getting better
every time and having fun so that's what makes it so fun guys with the community and everything
