Transcripts
the front pages today very much full of
the story from yesterday in Lebanon the
day after the pages all exploded killing
a few members of hezb um it's now death
by walkietalkie uh according to the sun
here exploding walkietalkie Sabotage by
Israel spy agency to Target Hezbollah
terrorists killed 14 and maimed hundreds
yesterday this is straight out of um
sort of a spy Thriller this stuff I mean
it's very Hightech even though the the
stuff they're using and attacking is
actually low Tech Charlotte very good
morning s good morning I mean it's been
called audacious I think it is very
audacious I think it's quite um
incredible what the Israelis have
managed to do here um obviously there
are those who say yeah but innocent
people are being hurt um but I mean it's
also highlighting the danger of uh where
Israel feels they are at the moment you
know you know sailed from from from all
sides including from the north by
Lebanon who have fired hundreds and
hundreds maybe thousands of rockets into
Northern Israel displacing 70,000 people
since last
October absolutely and I think the one
thing we can say this is this is a new
level of um intelligence if Israel
hasn't yet claimed responsibility for it
it's important to say that but people
are assuming that it is and answer that
it isn't them this is a whole new level
of intelligence and an operation that
must have taken years we're still trying
to work out what happened but it appears
that the detonating device in the
hardware which is unusual because it's
so difficult to do was implanted into
the hardware device at some point in the
supply chain now that doesn't happen
overnight that takes a long time in
planning and then you have the second
stage whereby they had information as to
how and where these phones are going to
be distributed so for Hezbollah it's a
major embarrassment in terms of their
intelligence their secrecy and people
will be speculating that they will be
looking at their own security and how
and Earth this came happen so it is a
very major blow and the third thing that
it does is for the Israeli intelligence
security agencies if of course it's
Israel that that is responsible it Maps
out who had those walkie-talkies at that
time so the intelligence that is
gathered from it is in itself a useful
commodity for the intelligence Services
whichever were responsible for this and
it completely disrupts their operational
activities doesn't it because it means
that they can't really communicate with
each other I've seen stories written in
the past couple of days where um you
know Husalah kind of commanders are
going well we don't know what's going to
explode next so we don't know what we
can
do absolutely they're going to be very
nervous I would imagine and people are
saying about further Supply chains if
it's happened here where else has it
happened Communications are going to be
disrupted now normally um it's reported
that the Hezbollah Chief said you know
your phones are the Hostile agents
normally it's the content of your
telephone that is that is monitored is
ored against you not the actual Hardware
of the phone itself and the other thing
that we're seeing already is that
international law what we think is okay
what we think is not okay is really
struggling to keep up with actual events
so if you look at it if you step back
and look at it objectively take you know
the Israel Palestine that issue out of
it because it's so emotive on both sides
what do we do in the future about the
legality of phones that may Target
terrorist suspect or a terrorist um but
may also kill civilians as well how do
we manage that where does the morality
lie where do we want our our laws to be
and sometimes I think we get too caught
up with the particular of the issue
we're dealing with and because we're so
caught up with which team we're on we
missed the bigger question of what is
this going to look like for the future
if it's us at the end of it yes so I
think this open a huge number of
questions for the future absolutely
right I don't know if you've seen the
interview in a daily mail today with
Benjamin yahu he's basically accusing
labor of undermining Israel uh he says
that um the the decisions taken by K are
misguided he said that suspending the
arms licenses which was done by Foreign
secretary um David Lamy was a horrible
message sent to Hamas he also says that
the UK is seeing Shameless anti-Semitism
uh in its City centers and these free
Palestine marches I mean you have to say
you can't disagree with any of that can
you you I mean I I hear things from both
sides my organization is it's quite
unusual in that we try to
depolarize understand what's going on
and we are ruthlessly pragmatic I've got
Muslim friends who've experienced
attacks and afraid to go outside and
I've got Jewish friends who are
experiencing exactly the same and that
has something gone very very wrong what
I would say and that shouldn't be
happening in Britain should it
absolutely not and this is not a Britain
I think any of us recognize one of the
things I would say is when I travel
around with my work the rest of the
World sees things quite differently and
one of the things that worries me and
looking forward to how do we tackle this
is that because we are seen and it
doesn't matter whether we are or not the
perception might be wrong but we're seen
to be treating Israel Palestine
different from Russia Ukraine the rest
of the world is saying well hang on rule
of law applies to you if you're white
and Ukrainian but it doesn't apply to
you if you're Palestinian now that may
be wrong or it may be right but what's
happened in is heard these conversations
they're saying right well the West has
no credibility over International rule
of law or human rights and I've seen the
support for Ukraine amongst the rest of
the world go down because they think
we're being unfair now sometimes
perception is reality and we have to
deal with whether that's the case is
there a point there because what's at
stake is our ability to uphold
rules-based order which we thrive on
which Israel depends on if all
rules-based order police by the West
collapses the First Nation to suffer
will be Israel well that's the thing and
surely leadership though is is not about
pleasing the people that want you to do
something it's about leadership which is
about doing the right thing isn't it it
Absol so bear with me so it it
absolutely is and I think what's very
difficult and the Middle East is a real
example of this there's such trauma and
strong identity on both sides often it's
very difficult to take the heat out of
it which is understandable I've got a
friend who was in a bus that was blown
up in Tel Aviv I've got another friend
who's lost 30 of their family members in
an Israeli strike in Gaza these are
human stories and Trauma begets anger to
cut through that and say okay what is
going on here why do these people feel
like this why do these people feel like
this what do we do that is fair and
pragmatic and often when people are
pushing you from either side to take one
strong view or another strong you being
in the middle and being pragmatic
brutally pragmatic and fair is the most
difficult thing you can do yeah I think
so Charlotte lensley thank you very much
indeed she's the director of the
conservative Middle East Council
