Summary
TLDRThe video script discusses the FORMAT learning system, which is based on extensive research into individual learning preferences. It outlines how people perceive and process information differently, leading to four distinct learner types. The script emphasizes the importance of a complete learning process that involves experiencing, reflecting, practicing, and evaluating new knowledge. It introduces the FORMAT model's eight steps, designed to guide learners through the entire process, answering key questions like 'why,' 'what,' 'how,' and 'what if,' ultimately enhancing learning outcomes.
Takeaways
- 🧠 Learning is a personal process involving both how we take in information and what we do with it.
- 🌐 People have different ways of perceiving and processing information, which shapes their interaction with the world.
- 👀 Some individuals prefer to learn through sensing and feeling, engaging with the world through experiences and interactions.
- 📚 Others prefer to learn by thinking and analyzing, often through independent research like reading or attending seminars.
- 🔄 After perceiving an experience, individuals process it in their own way, with some reflecting more than others before taking action.
- 🔄 The learning style is defined by a combination of preferences for feeling/thinking and watching/doing, leading to four distinct learner types.
- 🔄 The FORMAT model is based on these learning types and describes how individuals learn best.
- 🔁 A complete learning process involves experiencing, reflecting, practicing, and evaluating information.
- 🔄 The key questions for each learning type are 'why', 'what', 'how', and 'what if', which guide learners through the learning process.
- 🔄 Answering these questions in order helps learners understand personal meaning, gather information, apply it, and evaluate its potential.

How do people perceive and process information according to the script?
-People perceive information through sensing and feeling, often through experiences and interactions with others. They process information by thinking and analyzing, with some preferring to research independently and others moving quickly into action.
What are the two main preferences that define a learning style?
-The two main preferences that define a learning style are the preference for feeling or thinking and the preference for watching or doing.
How many distinct learner types are there in the format model?
-There are four distinct learner types in the format model, which are determined by combining preferences for feeling or thinking with preferences for watching or doing.
What is the complete learning process as described in the script?
-The complete learning process involves experiencing and feeling about a topic, reflecting on it, seeking opinions from others, trying out the information through practice, and finally evaluating and refining the initial understanding based on new learning.
What are the key questions that each learning type needs to have answered?
-The key questions that each learning type needs to have answered are 'why', 'what', 'how', and 'what if', which correspond to personal meaning, gathering information, engaging with the information, and refining and evaluating.
Why is it important to answer the key questions in order?
-Answering the key questions in order leads learners through the complete learning process, ensuring a comprehensive understanding and application of the information.
What does the 'why' question in learning signify?
-The 'why' question in learning is about personal meaning and importance, addressing why a topic is valuable and relevant to the individual.
What is the purpose of the 'what' question in the learning process?
-The 'what' question is about gathering information from experts and data to understand what is known about a topic and what is important to remember.
How does the 'how' question relate to engaging with new information?
-The 'how' question is about applying the new information practically, asking how it works and how it can be used to improve one's current knowledge or job performance.
What is the significance of the 'what if' question in learning?
-The 'what if' question is about refining and evaluating the information, as well as exploring potential and possibilities, such as considering alternative approaches or outcomes.

📚 Understanding the Learning Process
The paragraph discusses the learning process, emphasizing that it's a personal journey involving both the intake and application of information. It highlights that individuals have unique ways of perceiving and processing information, which affects how they interact with the world. Some people primarily gather information through sensing and feeling, often through experiences and interactions with others, while others are more analytical and prefer to research independently. The paragraph introduces the concept of learning styles, which are preferences for feeling or thinking combined with watching or doing. These preferences categorize individuals into four distinct learner types, forming the basis of the FORMAT model. The paragraph concludes by explaining that a complete learning experience involves experiencing, reflecting, practicing, and evaluating new information, which corresponds to answering key questions in a specific order: why, what, how, and what if.

Transcripts
so the format system is based on
extensive research into how we like to
learn um learning is a process that
involves both how we like to take in
information and then what do we actually
do with it each of us has our own way of
perceiving or getting information and
processing that information that shapes
how we interact with the
world for some of us um we get
information mainly through sensing and
feeling through interacting with the
world through some sort of an experience
and certainly by being involved with
others in that process whereas others
also sense and feel but they move far
more quickly to the thinking and
analyzing parts so people who perceive
in this way are quite happy to research
on their own um read a book attend a
seminar watch a video or listen to a
webinar presented by an expert in the
field so once we perceive our experience
we then have to process that in some way
and so we decide what we do with that
new
information some of us spend more time
watching and reflecting before we
actually do anything with it whereas
others spend less time doing this and
move quite rapidly into taking action we
call these preferences learning style
and when you combine your preference for
feeling or thinking with your preference
for watching or doing you find four
distinct learner types and this is the
basis for the format model and
particularly our learning type
descriptions however learning for all of
us is far more complete if we can go
through the whole learning process that
means that we experience and feel
something about a topic or a situation
we then take an opportunity to reflect
on that and find out what other people
friends or experts might have to say
about that issue we then want to try
that information out in some way through
practice using it ourselves and then
finally we can evaluate and refine our
initial situation in light of that new
learning so each step of this process
connects directly to the key question
that each learning type needs to have
answered why what how and what if and
notice that if we answer each of these
questions in order we actually lead
Learners through the complete learning
process so if we start with why it's all
about personal meaning and what does
this mean for me it answers questions
such as why is this important why should
I know about this why is this of value
to me then you can move on to the what
which is about finding out what other
information is out there so what do the
experts think or have to say about this
topic what sort of information is
available to me what does the data tell
me about this and what is important for
for me to know and
remember then you can move into the how
which is about engaging with how do I
actually use this
information so it involves questions
like how does this work or how can I
make this work how can I use this in my
job how will this improve on what I
already do how does this fit with what I
already know and how does what I know um
get influenced by this new understanding
that I have and finally we can move then
into the whatif so that's all about
refining and evaluation but it's also a
lot to do with potential and possibility
so it's like what if this could really
work or what if I changed this aspect
would it still happen the right way what
if I did it my way um and what if
there's other ways to do this so that is
the full um cycle of learning and the
format system is actually the eight
steps that are built out of that
understanding
