cover

20 basic tools that you should have

in your tool bag now a while back i did

a tool bag tour

of this bag here and this bag is just

chock full

of all kinds of tools that i've acquired

over 20 30 years here

and i got some requests to show a tool

bag of just some simple

basic tools now this might be a tool kit

that you have around the house or the

shop or your boat

or maybe you're an apprentice starting a

new job and you just want to show up

with some tools

this is the tool kit for you right here

so i'm going to go over

each of these tools one by one i'm also

going to have a list of these tools

up on my website there right on with

johnprayne.com and you can go there and

you can check out the whole list and

get these tools if you want there but

let's dig into the bag here

and start going over these all right

we're going to start in no particular

order here but tool

number one coming out of the bag is a

tape measure

all right this is a stanley tape measure

i happen to like this kind of stanley

it's the power lock

but the fat max tape is great yeah

milwaukee makes a great tape

uh just whatever you feel comfortable

with but a tape measure

definitely is a must-have in the bag

there

right another must-have in the bag item

number two here

is a hammer right you gotta have a

hammer in the bag here

this is a a real old s-wing that i got

there

and uh so right definitely need a hammer

in the bag

number three all right

a pry bar i put a couple of these

together in one category there

but these little pry bars are great

especially uh

this style right here that has this

little prying

action here where this is flared out and

it has this nice tip

on the top here for pulling nails real

narrow

a pry bar that's a must-have number four

the classic ellis stare invents the

combination square

i don't know 1850 something like that

right

this is a must-have tool in the bag so

versatile

uh it's been so useful for all these

years since

starrett developed it this happens to be

a craftsman here

right but a must-have tool in the bag

there

is the combination square

number five all right utility knife

we all know you need one of those

opening boxes there whatever you're

doing

cutting out vinyl letters you got the

utility knife

ready to roll there a folding saw this

is a

japanese folding saw right this is a

great tool to have in the bag there

you can pull this out you know cut some

little wood shims

cut you know a multitude of things with

this a japanese folding saw

you know 10 bucks right all right

number seven is a hacksaw and this is

just a nice

lightweight little hacksaw to have in

the bag there you can pull this

out cut a nail cut some metal that type

of thing

a little tiny hacksaw like this goes a

long ways there

all right number eight i lumped together

is a screwdriver set

right and this just happens to be a

craftsman set there

i really like the klein screwdrivers you

just go out and you buy

a set right and they come in a set of

four

right or a set of six where you get

a number two uh phillips head

right and this is the quarter inch flat

head

here's a 3 16 inch flat head and here's

a number one phillips right there

right for obvious reason you got the uh

the set of screwdrivers there just go

out and buy uh

a bunch of these together as a kit all

right number nine on the list here

is the 11 in one this is by klein tools

there this is a great tool to have

in the bag there right this you can pull

this out

where it's got the number two phillips

and the flat head

and it's got various size nut drivers

and smaller flat heads and smaller

phillips there

and then it also has if you pull this

out again it's got some torx head

screwdrivers in here

and if you pull this one out again you

got some square drives in there

so this is a really versatile little

tool there to have

in the bag all right number 10 on the

list

is a hex key set and these usually come

in a pair where you get one is metric

and one is standard right but these are

the classic

allen hex keys right and uh

you're gonna come across these all the

time little hex head screws and that

type of thing

all right number 11 on the list there is

some channel locks right

some adjustable pliers here

now these are great for gripping pipe or

doing uh

plumbing type work or gripping a piece

of steel

or you name it you know there are so

many uses for

a pair of these a definite must-have in

the bag there

and that's coming in there at number 11

on the list

all right let's see number 12

is the adjustable wrench right here now

this i think

is great to have two of these in the bag

there because you're always working

on a bolt and you have one end on the

nut and one on the bolt and you need two

to be working that together so

definitely get a set of these to go in

the bag

and anything beyond that you really need

like a socket set or a set of wrenches

you know

on the side but just for a basic tool

bag

right a pair of these works well

together

flipping the bag around here and

right off the bat a great pair of pliers

it's a pair of linesman's pliers these

are kleins

these are nine inch and you know not

only for electrical work are these great

these are great for all kinds of tasks

so definitely a pair of linesman's

pliers i like these

i like these especially with the

crimping feature

all right number 14 on the list a pair

of needle nose pliers

right definitely get the ones with the

cutters here

you're always reaching into something

bending wire doing electrical work

needle nose pliers high on the list all

right number 15 here

is a pair of diagonal cutters also known

as dikes there

and when you get a pair of these you

want these with the

tapered like the slanted edge here and

that's good for prying

and pulling out nails and staples and

all that kind of stuff but these are

just great for

cutting wire snipping all kinds of

things all right number 16

to keep in line there with the

electrical work right a pair of wire

strippers

and these are a great pair right here

these are last at the test of time

this particular pair of clients right

here

is awesome and you can go back into my

videos there and i've done videos on

individual tools like this one and i go

over all the features i had to use this

wire stripper here all right coming in

at number 17

on the list there it's just a utility

chisel here

and again a chisel has so many uses not

just chiseling out wood or you're

hanging a door or that type of thing

right

you can be scraping off a little bit of

paint or

who knows you know a chisel just comes

in so useful in so many ways there right

number

18 on the list is just a small torpedo

level here

and this is just a great tool whether

you're hanging a pitcher

or you're trying to you know just check

something real quick to see if it's

level there all right next up on the

list here

number 19 is these tin snips here

now these are made by whis and these are

what's known as a universal pair of tin

snips that can cut to the left

or the right or straight but these are a

great tool

whether you're opening up a unit of

plywood there and you've got to cut some

banding there

or you're working on a dryer vent

or some heating duct or something like

that this is the tool that you want

there okay number 20

on the list there is just some punches

now this is a 3

16 inch punch and this is great if you

want to

take a door down you want to pop out the

hinge pin you pop this underneath

you pop out the pin there and it comes

in useful

in so many ways and then another punch

right here

it's just a center punch you know say

you want to punch some metal there and

you want to drill a hole

right you got to have the center punch a

great tool to have in the bag

all right here's just some obvious bonus

items that you should have in the bag

there

is a pencil right a mechanical pencil is

always good there

and a sharpie marker right and then

you're also going to want some safety

gear

a pair of safety glasses

and a pair of hearing protection you

know these are the

peltor earmuffs there and i really like

these these are

good quality there and then other things

you might have in the bag is

right we're always using a set of drills

there

not that you have those in the bag but

you're going to want to carry

a set of drill bits in there and this is

a set of dewalt drill bits

and i think you can get these for 10 15

bucks for

a set like this and this goes from 1

16 of an inch up to a half inch right

throw that right

in the bag there and then another good

thing to have

is a set of screw tips like this

for your impact driver there and this

just has

a little screw tip here that you can

interchange

with uh right here's like a number two

phillips

number one phillips you got star drives

in here you got square drives

right it's good to just buy a little set

just like this

and then another great little item is

just to have a countersink here

if you're going into wood that type of

thing that this will uh

start the screw there for you and just

make it easy

to put screws in the wood there all

right right on right on
