name is jackie and i am the owner and

creator here at denwood designs

in today's video i'm going to show you

how i make my own printable vinyl

and how we take that vinyl and use it to

make a wrap around

a 20 ounce straight skinny tumbler and

it's only going up about two-thirds so

we're gonna top it off with a classic

three-band look and pair it with a

cheeky little saying that matches the

vinyl and i just love this look i think

it's really really fun

and could be really versatile you could

use a whole different range

of digital papers to create your own uh

printable vinyl

and this one doesn't take any time at

all so i hope you enjoy it

okay guys i'm going to show you how i

start with my printable vinyl

so i use a program called pages i am a

mac user so

if you are not uh then you're going to

need to use like google docs or

something like that

you're going to want to set it to

landscape versus portrait so that

your your

image is going to be longer than it is

tall

so it's important that when you find an

image that you like for this style

that you are using something that is

wider than it is tall and i'll kind of

show you why that's important here

shortly

so we're going to go ahead and size this

image and remove

all of the margins here so i'm just

lining it up with the corner

and i'm going to go into document and

then change

all of my margins to zero top bottom

and side to side

and then we're going to go ahead and

kind of pull it down

and extend it out to the side

to fill the page here so you'll see then

that it kind of drops below

that cut off which is fine and i'll show

you how to handle that

here in a second so currently um

constrain proportions is checked so it

when you're resizing your image you're

not distorting it in any way so the the

idea here is you want to place it as

close

to filling the page without changing

that

as possible so we're going to go back to

image and then that little box

for constrain proportions we're going to

uncheck and then we're just going to

drag it out for

the remainder of the image here

and right down to the very bottom of the

page then we're going to go ahead

hit file go print

and we'll make sure the second page is

blank

and it is so we're gonna uncheck print

all pages and we're just going to print

from page

one to page one and i'm going to change

my quality in media

so from plain paper to photo paper and i

like to use the

max glossy and up my

print quality to high and that just

makes sure i get the best

image for me so here's everything

printed and ready to go you'll see you

have the tiniest little border

all around the image and i'm starting

with a

fully sanded and prepped white

20 ounce skinny tumbler from dap

merchandise

you'll also need a paper cutter you will

need

a fabric or flexible

measuring tape and a pencil to mark your

cup

so i'm just going to go ahead and

quickly trim the edges here off of my

vinyl because i don't want any of the

white

border

and you'll get that when you print full

sheet that's just

the smallest margin that you'll get so

there we've got it all trimmed up neat

and tidy

i'm going to show you here why it was

important that we selected an image that

was

wider than it was tall because if we

went with a tall

we actually wouldn't have enough vinyl

to wrap fully

around this 20 ounce cup so that's why

we you really want to watch

the image or the paper that you're

selecting from so

and this paper actually came from a

digital paper file that i purchased i

think on design bundles or something

like that

and it was just a cactus one uh so i'm

gonna go ahead and mark my cup i already

know that i want

the vinyl to be about two-thirds of

the height of the cup from the bottom so

my measuring tape is a little wonky

there at the top so i always tend to

measure from one down just to kind of

give you an idea but i'm going to come

down to about three and a half inches

from the top and make a mark

so from the bottom of the cup up to that

mark is where we're going to be wrapping

our vinyl around this cup

so there i usually use the one so it's

about

four and a half inches roughly

so i know that i need to mark the back

of my

um my vinyl here about

four and a half inches so i'm going to

make a mark

right across the top there the one and

then i'm going to do it just

further down the page as well so that

i've got two landmarks so i know i'm in

a straight line

so again line it up marked it at the one

that's four and a half inches

and then i'm going to go ahead and put

that onto the paper cutter and i

apologize here

i grabbed the wrong paper cutter i do

have a much bigger one so this

kind of didn't really cut the whole

thing but i kind of jury rigged it so it

worked just fine

and you can do the same but you could

also use a pair of scissors you just

want to make us

get a straight edge and make sure that

you are in fact lining up those two

lines

and you are getting a perfectly straight

line that's going to be really really

important for this design

and so pardon the struggle here

um again i just grabbed the wrong one

grabbed the wrong tool

and it's okay so

i made it work

and then once we've got that cut we're

going to go ahead and start getting it

ready so you can discard that piece

you can use it for another project or

you can wrap a pen whatever you like

with it

and so i just set it off to the side and

found something else for it later on

and then i'm just going to quickly line

everything up make sure that it is in

fact the way that i like it

and this is a straight tumbler so i find

it

a lot easier to line the bottom up so

that it's actually

resting against a flat surface and then

you'll actually see here where it's

you can get it to wrap and and the top

and bottom will meet

perfectly just the way it was intended

to there so

all the way around the cup so we're

going to go ahead

and apply our vinyl this is a long and

tedious

process but if you take your time it's

definitely

worth doing and you really do want to

take your time with this part so

just go ahead and separate the back of

your vinyl from the paper but i leave

the paper intact as much as possible so

i just folded back about a one inch

space here

and then lined it up with the bottom of

the cup and the table

just to make sure i was happy with

placement

and adjust as needed so important to

note here guys

with the printable vinyl um i can't

remember offhand the brand that i use

i will link it down below in the

description box when i'm done and i did

just buy it off of amazon

you do not need to seal printable vinyl

at all so this has no clear coat spray

to it

it has no quick coat on it nothing it is

straight from the printer

and then onto the cup so um if your ink

tends to

take a little bit to dry just wait for

it to dry

before going ahead and pressing down on

especially in this

process right here so we're just going

to

very very gently rub if you have one of

those

kind of squeegee type things with the

felt bottom

then go ahead and use that part but you

just want to take your time make sure

you're getting it right down to the very

bottom

getting out any creases or wrinkles and

really really taking your time with that

guys

if you rush it you will not be happy so

and this stuff was pretty forgiving you

can lift it and replace it as need be

here

so if you know it's not too too bad

do not apply your vinyl your printable

vinyl

using a transfer tape

you will regret that decision this stuff

is so

sticky so any kind of adhesive that

sticks to it

is really difficult to get off and

you'll see that here in in a couple of

processes as we go

forward but so again just before

finishing up we're going to go all the

way around the bottom

make sure that we have all the wrinkles

out that there's no bubbles

if you are noticing a couple of bubbles

you can just use

the tip of your craft knife and poke a

hole

and um and then just smooth it right

over with your

thumb finger or that little squeegee

tool just be really careful you don't

want to tear the vinyl

so here you could see how sticky it was

onto itself so

i just want to be really really careful

and again you'll line up that crease

really really well top to bottom

and then we're going to get our craft

knife and we're going to cut off that

excess

and i did cut over the little piece

that's underneath

but just a smidge like a couple of

millimeters

you don't want a huge seam but you don't

want to run the risk of cutting

too far back from it and then you get

this white gap

that you can't really do anything with

to fix so

and i was pretty careful here with my

craft knife i didn't go too deep at

first

and just make sure that i was really

really happy with where i was cutting

and then go ahead and put a bit more

pressure cutting a straight line if

you're uncomfortable doing it that way

you can use a straight edge as well

just really watch your fingers that

you're not sliding around you don't want

to cut yourself for sure

and and then just cut off any excess

so i did find with printable vinyl

though you do get a little bit

of some of the adhesive that peels off

from the back there you can see

so i said take a couple extra seconds to

kind of get rid of

all of that and it was a little bit of a

pain i wasn't really expecting that

but as i've worked with the printable

vinyl here the last little while i'm

noticing that just kind of tends to be

what it does so

not a big deal just be aware that it is

something that can happen and and it's

fine it doesn't really affect

anything at all it didn't leave any

residue behind

on the vinyl um but i did have to remove

it because it's white and it really

sticks out

so take your time and get rid of it all

so

and there we go so i'm pretty happy with

the way that that turned out it wasn't

too too hard at all and again it's a

straight skinny tumbler

so it's you know these are very

forgiving

and quite easy you don't have to worry

about working in any kind of a taper

or anything like that um

so now that it's been on there for a

couple of minutes i'm going to go ahead

and i'm going to wrap

it with some saran wrap and tape so that

i can

paint the rest of the cup this key lime

by rust-oleum it's a two times primer

and paint

so i'm just going to go ahead and line

some tape up to the top of my

saran wrap here and then i'm just going

to tape off the top and bottom of the

cup

and be really careful across the top

here you want to make sure that you're

getting

lined up right at the very top edge of

that vinyl

and you want to pull it nice and snug so

that

you are getting a really nice straight

line and your tape will line up

flawlessly with the other end

if you're in a really nice straight line

so that's a good way to kind of keep

yourself

just sort of assured that you you are in

fact where you need to be with it so

and rather than doing this in a two-step

process i did it all in one because

i tend to kind of when i'm doing cups i

do them in big batches here so

i try to do as many steps at once as i

possibly can so i'm just folding

the saran wrap back from the edge a

little bit and i'm going to get another

piece of tape and i'm going to tape

off around that as well so that i can

paint the bottom at the same time so

it's just sort of easier to do this if

you're not comfortable with that

it's absolutely totally fine to do it in

a second step

this is just what worked for me and i

tend to be

you know multitask i try to get as much

done in one step

as i possibly can so

and you just want to make sure that you

do have all the saran wrap tucked in

there

and away from the edge so that you're

not masking off an area that you want

painted and so again just tape all the

way across

pulling nice and snug so that you're

getting a nice straight tight line

and again i'm just using two times

rust-oleum

in key lime and i only had this one in

gloss so

we're gonna paint the bottom and the top

of the cup

and then we're gonna let it dry so those

are the turner arms that i use

um if you have any questions about that

by all means throw them down in the

comments below and i'm happy to kind of

walk you through

um my my setup so

now that the cups are or the cup is dry

and um we're ready to go now with

the glitter process so we're going to

tape off the

vinyl section and then i'm going to use

just a thin layer of epoxy to create

an adhesive surface for the glitter so

the bottom i'm actually going to leave

a little bit of the vinyl exposed

because i want the glitter to kind of

come right

up to that i don't want it to be a stark

line

of where the vinyl ends and where the

glitter starts so i want that glitter to

kind of creep

up over that um

over that last little bit of vinyl at

the very bottom there

so and again just making sure all the

edges line up so that you've got a nice

straight line

all the way across

and once you're happy with that smooth

it out all the way around you don't want

to make you don't want to have any gaps

where

you get glitter where you don't want it

and then we're going to tape off

the top of the vinyl section as well and

this one we're going to come right

up to where the vinyl meets the paint

and because i don't need any vinyl

exposed here

we are going to finish this cup off with

a triple band

and um so same thing just making sure

that it's all nice and smooth down that

your edges meet up

and then i've got five milliliters of

epoxy and i'm using

alumalite's amazing clear cast and

i've pre-warmed the cup the glitter

we're using today is senorita by glitter

babes which is another canadian company

and i've got it in both a chunky

and a fine so i've pre-warmed the cup

using

my uh heat gun and it just makes the

vinyl or the uh

sorry excuse me the epoxy uh smooth out

just a little bit easier

for coverage and you don't need quite as

much we don't want any lines in our

epoxy or in our glitter

if you do get that it's just because

you've used too much epoxy so

really i'm just dipping my finger in and

then that's pretty much enough to cover

the whole top portion of this cup here

so you want to make sure that you're

getting

really good and close into that tape

and a little bit of overlap on the tape

is fine again you don't want any gaps

and then all the way up to the very top

edge as well

and then we're going to basically do the

same thing on the bottom coming up over

that little bit of exposed vinyl area

and we're just going to make sure that

we've got great coverage

no gaps and you shouldn't see any epoxy

running

or anything like that there should be no

pooling no nothing it's

literally just the tiniest amount

on the on the cup itself

and so for the bottom of the cup i am

just going to

use fine and for the top we're going to

use a chunky and a fine so i'm going to

start with that first

and my shaker bottle for this is

actually the holes on it we're just a

bit too small

so i'm just doing it by hand and um

we're just going to be putting out and

this is just to create a little bit of

depth and dimension

the glitter is the exact same color

in two different cuts and so again it is

glitter babes

and it is senorita and they are a

canadian glitter company

out of ontario and i absolutely love

their product

so i'm very happy to have found another

canadian company that i can support

and i just love their products so

very very happy with this and i just

love this color of green it's not quite

neon but it's not far off and it's just

got the most amazing

little holographic shift to it as well

or an iridescence i guess would be a

better better description of this one

so we're not going for full coverage

here we're just going to add a little

bit of depth and dimension to this

and we're not going to put any on the

bottom so i just want to try to keep

that bottom as nice and smooth and drama

free from

all the epoxy that's going to be coming

and

so i'm going to set that off to the side

and i just had a small sample of the

senorita in the fine so we're going to

use that here and i'm just going to coat

the bottom

and again making sure you come right up

over the top of that

vinyl that little bit of exposed vinyl

and this will just pull it all together

so nice compared to just if we were to

just do the bottom only

i feel like this just finishes it off so

much nicer

so just take your time make sure you're

filling in all the spots you want really

good coverage here

top and bottom

so we'll just make sure the bottom is

done really really well

shake off any excess and then we're

going to go ahead and finish off the top

and this just looks so nice all together

with both

both the fine and the chunky mix

and so there we go once it's all on

there we can go ahead and start to pull

the tape

and this is where you'll see guys when i

said that the adhesive vinyl

printable vinyl is really really sticky

so

i was so worried when i was peeling this

off that i was gonna end up sucker

punching myself so just be careful

because you really do kind of have to

pull

and again this vinyl is not sealed

and there is nothing coming up with it

so even though it's masking tape

it was really really well adhered and

it did not pull off an ounce of any ink

whatsoever so there was no damage no

residue left behind

nothing so we've got a nice crisp edge

there

and we're going to go ahead and peel off

from the bottom

and then i am going to go ahead and seal

this i think i did

two coats of um just rust-oleum clear

two times gloss and just to make sure

that we really locked that glitter down

i don't want it transferring into that

vinyl area

and so once that's all dry and ready to

go i've got 20 mils of epoxy

mixed here and we're going to go ahead

and apply that just as we always do

i always start at the very top and

making really good sure that you're up

sealing right up over that edge there

because it

tends to want to pull back from the edge

so

you'll always see i tend to spend a fair

bit of time right up at the very edges

there to make sure that i have

nothing pulling back from it and i've

got really good coverage

so we're going to go ahead and cover the

entire cup and then we're going to give

it a quick torch

and i'm going to let this spin for four

to six

hours and then i'm going to go ahead

right away into a flood coat so it was

another

20 milliliters of epoxy and

then i let that spin for a full 12 hours

and then i believe i did actually one

more coat of it

because it needs some sanding and just

with

using the chunky i like to make sure

i've got enough coats on there that i'm

not going to scrape off

any of the color on the glitter if i

don't have enough

epoxy on there so i just made sure that

it was a nice thick coat

and it was fairly smooth there was a

little bit of sanding that i needed to

do i had a couple of pokey bits there

but so all in all before i went into the

sanding process are

three coats of epoxy so this one four to

six hours

a second coat let that cure for 12 hours

and then one final coat after that that

let cure for 12 hours

so if you do notice any little bits of

stray glitter getting into your vinyl

area

now's the time to pull those out really

quick you can use tweezers i just use

the edge of my nail because they're

quite long

and um wasn't a big deal for me

um and that's that so we're gonna go

ahead and let that spin

and then we're gonna go right into the

sanding process

from here once we're all set

so i want to find out where i'm going to

be placing my

decal for the for this cup

and so you can see a little bit of a

pokey bit there so i'm going to go ahead

and quickly sand

all the way around and i'm going to

really pay attention to where the decal

is going to be laying down

on the front of the cup so the seam

where we cut the vinyl

is at the very back so i just make sure

that when i lay it into the cup cradle

uh there that i make sure that i have it

so that the front of my cup is up and

that that area

is nice and smooth there's no lumps or

bumps

because when you lay the vinyl down on

top of that it will

really really be emphasized so just

spending a bit of time here

rubbing i'm using a 60 grit sanding

block and i just picked that up from

home hardware i do believe and then we

want to do all around the top rim and

expose a little bit of stainless steel

at that top rim

i also use a dremel from time to time to

just expose a very thin line

of epoxy sorry of the stainless steel

and then that just makes sure we've got

a really nice edge for our epoxy to

adhere to as opposed to the very

top of the rim of the cup because that's

going to be the weakest part and any

cracks in there will ultimately

lead to the whole cup failing at some

point because moisture will get down in

there so

so i've laid it down in the cup holder

my little cradle there which is just two

pool noodles held together with some

electrical tape

the decal that i created is just one i

did in design space

it's not a real fancy font or anything

like that and then i just used

the offset feature and created

a two-tone dark pink on the bottom light

pink on the top

cute little sassy saying and um

and i just you guys have seen me do that

process before

so i didn't really show it so i'm just

going to go ahead

and peel this off onto the transfer tape

and then we're going to go ahead and put

it onto the cup making sure it's nice

and straight

and again we've got the seam lined up at

the very back of the pool noodle so that

i know what i'm dealing with right in

front of me up top

is the center of the front

so we've got it ready and we're just

going to go ahead and lay it down making

sure that we're nice and straight

and i'm using that bottom edge of the

vinyl to

be my landmark and making sure that i'm

nice and straight there

so once i'm happy with placement i'm

going to go ahead and smooth from

center out to the sides and this just

make sure you don't get any

wrinkles or anything like that because

it is a curved surface

i just want to make sure that it's nice

and tightly adhered down and then we're

going to go ahead and peel that up

and if there's any spots that start to

lift as you're peeling your transfer

tape up it's okay just lay it back down

and push them down

rub them down just a little bit more and

then they'll stick just fine

so i'm pretty happy with that

and then we're going to go ahead and put

the bands on the cup

so the bands for these i cut i believe

in 10 inches in length the first band

is the dark green and i cut that one

at .25 thickness

and 10 inches in length and that's just

from using the shapes tool in design

space i used the square and unlocked it

so that i can resize it to 0.25

in height or width rather and then 10

inches

in length and then we're going to line

that up with the back seam of the cup

so that we keep all the seams in one

spot and we're going to just

make sure that it stays all the way

through the middle

of that vinyl and that keeps it in a

nice straight line and again if you're

in a nice straight line

your two ends will match up just

perfectly

so once you get to that point and you're

going to pull fairly snug you don't want

to pull too hard guys vinyl is

does have a little bit of play and if

you do pull it you'll kind of thin it

out

so you run the risk of stretching it and

breaking it but also through the

stretching process you're changing its

width a little bit so there's a fine

line between

pulling it too tight and kind of not

really pulling it tight enough so if

you're getting wrinkles you're not

pulling enough and if you're changing

its shape you're pulling too much so

and again we just want a little tiny bit

of overlap

and then we're going to cut that with

our craft knife and then the dark

pink is 0.19

by 10 inches and then the light pink is

0.13

by 10 inches so we get a nice triple

band look it looks really really pretty

accentuates the dark green of the cactus

the light

pink and the bright pink from the decal

and it just ties it all together so well

and then i just put my logo on the

bottom and we

are ready to go ahead with its final

coats of epoxy

so again 20 milliliters of epoxy i've

got mixed up

and again it's illumilite amazing clear

cast

and we're just going to apply it as we

normally do

top to bottom making really good sure

we're up over the edge

and that we're not getting any epoxy

pulling back

and we're gonna smooth it out from top

to bottom really good coverage

using the full 20 milliliters and then

we're gonna go ahead and torch it

and then we're gonna go ahead and let

that cure for four to six hours and then

we're going to go straight into a flood

coat

and let that cure for the full 12 hours

and that was it

the cup was done i was so happy with it

if you find that you have to do one more

coat after that that's just fine

and i hope you guys enjoyed this

creating some of your own vinyl i know

sometimes it's hard to find

vinyl so this is a fun way to do it you

can find lots of digital papers out

there
