devices can actually be used on the face

for things like acne scars and marks on

the legs not just for hair removal but

also for varicose veins and even on the

arms and the back for things like

thickened skin due to sun damage the

history of IPL is quite fascinating and

as someone who's administered IPL

professionally in clinic but also

personally using at home devices I

wasn't really aware that IPL could do

all of these other things but there's

lots of science behind it and if you

have one of these at home devices that

you're using for hair reduction or to

get rid of hair permanently you might as

well see if you're a candidate to use it

in some of these other ways so let's

talk about IPL and what it is because it

is not a laser and so many people get

that wrong and I'm so happy that we're

working with you like on a portion of

this video to explain those differences

because this is something that a lot of

other people won't share but laser is

literally a laser beam of Target pointed

light IPL is intensed pulsed light it's

not a continual stream it's a pulse and

it's a spectrum of light that's a bit

larger now laser is very ablative to the

skin and IPL is less ablative this often

means you do need to go in for more

treatments or if you're doing this at

home you need to get a stronger device

but it means that you need to do this

for 3 weeks or 6 weeks or even 12 weeks

depending on where you're going and

which one you're using personally this

is just a side note but if I have to use

something continually for 12 weeks I'm

going to forget a little bit and ends up

being like 20 weeks for me so for me

finding something with higher Jewels

meaning more energy and therefore more

light being shot into the skin to kill

the little hairs that for me is more

accessible and more attainable laser you

always have to go in clinic laser cannot

really be done at home in a safe and

effective manner unless you're trained

to but even then I think there are

issues intense pulse light works by

shooting this light into the skin and

looking for contrast so if you have

really white albino skin and white hair

this isn't going to work and you're

going to want to look for something else

or if you have really black ebony skin

and black hair the contrast isn't there

this isn't going to pick up on it it and

neither is any other IPL you may want to

look for something like an Alexandrite

laser that'll be a better option but if

you're a Fitzpatrick type 2 through 5

this can be a fantastic option or other

IPL devices on the market again this is

you like and when I heard the name I'm

going to be totally honest when I heard

the name you like I was like you like

like me I like like I didn't understand

it apparently this is like the number

three brand in all of China and Korea

yes it is cruelty-free but it's like

right next to Phillips which is so

interesting because it's only been

recently that we've had access to it out

here now I've used many other IPL

devices as well but they got really hot

on the skin and because of that it was

not something that I was comfortable

putting on my face but the UL like again

works by shooting light into the hair

looking for that contrast it basically

kills the hair at the root it's

anatomically called the papila and this

stops the hair from ever being able to

grow back again and that's why one of my

armpits is almost completely hairless

and the other one literally has a 4:00

Shadow I shut IPL into only one of my

armpits and I did IPL only one of my

legs and one of my

toes uh because I wanted to isolate my

variables so half of my body is hairless

the other half is quite hairy but we can

talk about that another time UL like

specifically has this cooling technology

basically this little thing right here

cools down the intense pulse light

before it hits your skin so it does not

hurt at all this is completely cool to

the touch and if you're going to do

something on your face or on delicate

areas I always recommend number one get

a cool touch technology but number two

make sure you're patch testing it uh

patch test it like on um the inner arm

or on the wrist or somewhere that is

more sensitive or on the back of the

knee cuz the last thing you want to do

is shoot something at your face and then

you end up with a burn which yes happens

from IPL in clinic and at home and from

lasers just in case we don't want that

so cool touch and Patch test first but

let's say that you want to use this on

acne marks or pigmentation how exactly

does that work again it's best to know

what that pigmentation is caused from

but if we look at medical studies many

have actually used what's called

phototherapy to treat acne marks this is

called light therapy Y and yes it is IPL

but if you have an acne Mark that's kind

of Left Behind from a blemish try

holding the IPL device onto the skin

make sure it has complete contact and

make sure that you're wearing glasses or

goggles that protect your eyes

especially since this is so close to the

skin close your eyes just to be extra

safe and shoot one to three flashes at

this area you can do this about once a

day and over a week or two you should

see a reduction in that pigment and a

difference in as little as 2 weeks now

here's the thing you need to wear the

glasses this is again why I prefer you

like all of their sets come with the

goggles that are needed you can't just

use regular sunglasses because the

intensed pulse light is a specific

wavelength that sunglasses don't block

out so you need the special goggles but

you like with every single set has the

glasses with them they also have an

adorable holiday set that has the

glasses as well as like special holiday

packaging and pricing which is what I

would recommend always always always do

glasses if you're going to do it this

close to your eyes and this close on

your face and as a bonus if you do have

wiry hairs on your chin or on like your

mustache area and you have contrast so

the skin of and the hair are different

colors you could absolutely use this

right here and I wouldn't recommend that

with a lot of other IPL devices if they

get warm if it gets warm to the touch

it's a no no but for the cool touch

technology heck you can just zap some of

those I actually have two of them right

here that I should absolutely go for it

cuz these have been bugging me ever

since I was

little my mom would be like tweezing her

chin hairs and she would like ask me to

come help her cuz she couldn't see and I

remember being like 8 years old and

sitting at the kitchen counter and

helping her pluck these hair off of her

chin and she would complain about these

whiskers so much and it's so funny

because when I was maybe 16 I bought her

a female face shaving razor thing it was

like an electric shaver she fell in love

with it but she always had these wiry

hairs maybe this holiday season I should

get her one of these and like teach her

how to use it if I could just get rid of

the hairs permanently it works so well

why not do this she's not the kind of

girl that spends money on herself she's

never had a manicure in her entire life

she's kind of a tomboy but I think she

would use this if I got it for her I

think I might help her do that here's

the other thing about my mom she has

very vericose veins she's worked in

medicine all of her life and because of

that she's constantly on her feet she's

lifting and transferring patients she's

a walker and a hiker but unfortunately

she has varicose veins that she really

doesn't like varicose veins aren't bad

they're not dangerous but some people

don't like the look of them and it's

basically these veins in the legs

usually that have kind of collapsed and

they kind of look to be bumpy on the

skin and kind of purple or even green in

color and some people hate them and the

best way to get rid of them is medically

by collap cing the vein you can kind of

fill them problems that they can come

back and they can be really bothersome

for some people well IPL has actually

been shown to be used on varicose veins

as well even in clinic there aren't the

best results for varicose vein reduction

they can be really difficult to treat

but my theory is Heck if I got this to

like remove the hair on my armpit I

might as well do it on varicose veins

right and I only have one varicose vein

I hope I don't get more but as an

aesthetician or working in medicine I'm

standing a lot and for anyone who has a

job with where they're standing all the

time such as a teacher or a restaurant

waiter or waitress or a server or anyone

like that like it can do so much to the

legs especially if your circulation

isn't as great because you're a tall

person I'm 6 feet tall so that is me but

yeah I have been used on varicose veins

before I don't necessarily want to get

my one varicose vein collapsed I hope I

don't get more in the near future I

probably will I might knock on wood who

knows um but for me for my mom we're

going to try it we also have to talk

about solar elastosis

this kind of leathery look that

sometimes happens to skin this does

happen over time especially for people

who used to go out and Sun tamam

purposely really grateful that it hasn't

happened to me yet uh when it comes to

my mom I don't think it's happened to

her but fun fact my mom did used to go

water skiing and she would just lay out

and bake in the sun before she knew

better my mom is probably the reason

that I love sunscreen so much she used

to slather us down she used to put me in

a Barney swimsuit I got teased for it

but it was like a UPF protective

swimsuit it had like a collar even like

a little matching hat with a flappy in

the back to protect my neck I hated her

for it until I grew up grew some brain

cells and then I grew a couple of more

brain cells and rubbed them together to

start a fire and I was like Wow sun

protection is important yeah it's

probably because of her that I love sun

protection but if you do sun protect or

especially if you don't this solar

elastosis can happen and for a lot of

people they really don't like the look

or also the feel just because it kind of

feels like you know a leather couch well

IPL is an option for solar elastic dosis

this has been medically looked at and

medically treated and a lot of people

actually go in and get this intense

pulse light shot at the skin to help

with solar elastosis in these

professional settings I've never done

professional IPL on other people for

solar elastosis but again my theory is

if this is just as powerful or if this

is something that can be used on these

areas and for these conditions if I

bought it to get the armpit hair and the

toe hair off my body why not repurpose

it for these other things now I actually

don't have solo elastosis if anyone does

does and wants to be like a guinea pig

let me know like I would love to maybe I

could buy one for you or gift you one as

long as you take before and after

pictures and use it for me because I

would really like to see you know when

it comes to at home versus in clinic

what is possible and effective even the

idea of being able to do at home hair

removal is something that 10 15 years

ago I wouldn't have known about or

believed but the technology has become

so good and so safe especially because

it's this cooling technology and even if

you do plug it in it literally will not

fly FL unless it is flush to the skin

for this model don't get a model that

flashes if it's not flush to the skin
