influences podcast how are you guys I'm

doing well it's usually cold it has been

called the last few days but you were

just saying we're just saying before

it's a bit warmer today last and by

warmer we mean it was a high of 15°

today we're desperate over here somebody

somebody save us it is cold and we don't

have proper heating mind you since the

last recording which was freezing

episode one um Justine was complaining

she's always complaining funny that the

episode was about not complaining I just

thought I would give an example of what

it sounds like but you'll be happy to

have a heater and where is it it's not

present and currently ankles are very

cold well halfway through we'll we'll

pause and put the heater on I'm going to

the Holy Spirit amen Jesus I just want

you are the god that meets us where we

are and so today we just give you um the

next couple of minutes of our life and

we just say In This Moment God open up

my mind I open up my heart I open up my

hands to you and God whatever you want

to speak we're ready and we are

listening amen amen so this Sunday is

the 20th Sunday in ordinary time and

we'll be reading from the Gospel of John

6:

51-58 Jesus said to the crowd I am the

living bread which has come down from

heaven anyone who eats this bread will

live forever and the bread that I shall

give is my flesh for the life of the

world then the Jews started arguing with

one another how can this man give us his

flesh to eat they said Jesus replied I

tell you most solemnly if you do not eat

the Flesh of the son of man and drink

his blood you will not have life in you

anyone who does Eat My Flesh and drink

my blood has eternal life and I shall

raise him up on the last day for my

flesh is real food and my blood is real

real drink he who eats my flesh and

drinks my blood lives in me and I in him

as I who am sent by the living father

myself draw life from the father so

whoever eats me will draw life from me

this is the bread come down from heaven

not like the bread our ancestors ate

they are dead but anyone who eats this

bread will live

forever now how many times have we heard

this and I bet out of this podcast

you're going to get a few insights into

this scripture verse trying to

understand first of all the context the

pretext this is one thing we try to do

for us to to give a little bit of

context but uh the context of what is

happening and the pretext of what is

happening here is that this is right

after the feeding of 5,000 so Jesus just

F fed 5,000 people so the bread of life

discourse began there that Jesus Takes

the bread of life this is what the

Eucharist does right that it it's about

you hear this at at the end of mass or

some priest or someone told you like go

be the Eucharist to the world this is

how rather than at the end of mass Jesus

did this at the beginning of mass he did

this at the beginning that he became the

show that the bread of life makes no

sense first of all without charity

without love without feeding people

without loving people and so there he's

feeding the 5,000 people but here he's

saying okay that's Justice is fantastic

it's good social justice is good and I

don't know about you in your country but

in our country one of the biggest issues

we have is that people get stuck on

social justice right and and they don't

go any deeper and our schools it's about

social justice and doing good but Jesus

today takes them deeper and says hey

okay social justice this is great

feeding the 5000s but now I'm going to

move from action to actual

transubstantiation I'm going to like

this is the to hell with the with the

symbolism now we're going into the real

the real presence of Christ and it was

really difficult really difficult it's a

massive Leaf from from last week to this

week feeding 5,000 now to the real

presence of Christ and it's incredibly

graphic I think that's one thing that

has really like taken me back it's it's

no joke ladies and gentlemen like if

Jesus was you know if it wasn't a big

deal I don't it doesn't make any sense

to me and um I think that's one really

cool thing that we're going to break

open for sure let's talk a little bit

about you know I love to go through like

connections to the Old Testament and how

these are fulfilled in the new New

Testament there's a whole bunch of

foreshadowing of this moment before

Jesus says these words and he talks

about how he's actually going to fulfill

these

foreshadowings um so as father Rob said

this right before this is the

multiplication of the Loaves and the

fish fishes but even before this if we

go back to the Old Testament in the book

of Exodus we know that God provides Mana

to the

Israelites actually earlier in John 6:

32 to35 Jesus explains that he is the

true bread from Heaven he's going to

surpass the Mana and how will these

things be fulfilled Jesus says In this

passage today the bread that I shall

give so notice he uses a future tense

here so he's pointing to two things here

he's firstly pointing to his future

sacrifice on the cross and he's also

pointing to the Eucharistic liturgy

which we experience every Sunday every

day which is available to us where Jesus

gives himself as a living bread from

Heaven to us another little technical

thing to notice in this passage as well

the phase he who eats this bread will

live forever now this only appears in

John chapter 6 and another place as well

it appears in Genesis chter 3 I believe

it's verse 22 so in these two passages

it's this comparison between the Tree of

Life in Genesis which bore the fruit of

immortality and the bread of life in

John 6 which tradition actually calls

the medicine of immortality connections

I love it you're all about the

connections and again it's the

sacrificial nature and we don't we need

to understand the language that is used

here it's not just giving some of

yourself Jesus is trying to emphasize

look we have to give ourselves to people

we um but what it's going to do is if

you're going to participate in this

bread if you're going to participate in

this meal you're going to have to die

like I'm going to have to die you're

going to have to be poured out like I'm

going to be poured out love the story of

the pig and and the chickens you know

like they're in a they're seeing their

owner starving and and they're really

feeling sorry for for the farmer and

they're saying listen we need to feed

the farmer and the Pig and the chicken

have this discussion and the chicken

says I have a great idea let's cook some

breakfast let's make some breakfast for

this farmer I'll get some eggs and you

just provide the bacon and the pig just

looked this agreed with it at first but

then he said hold on a second for you an

egg you can just continue living and

laying eggs but for me if I'm going to

give bacon I'm going to have to give off

myself I'm going to have to die to to

give of this bacon and this is what

Jesus is saying he's saying hey rather

than giving of the five Fish and Loaves

that you have no I want you I'm taking

you to a whole other level now now I

want you to die I want you to die but

it's also again this is a discussion I

have with a lot of my Protestant friends

you know it's not just the the disciples

didn't walk away because they thought ah

we're going to have to die no it was

offensive it was

like scandalous that Jesus says that you

have to eat of My Flesh and drink of my

blood not only die to self but it was

such a scandal that maybe 50% of the

church just walked away because Jesus

was saying you have to eat of My Flesh

and drink of my blood not a symbol but

you have to give of yourself and the

Jews were the crowd they were confused

because it kind of sounded like Jesus

was talking about cannibalism here you

know talking about eating a human corpse

and we can see that when they say how

can this man give us his flesh to eat

but Jesus isn't talking about mortal

flesh here he's actually talking about

his glorified humanity and the

supernatural life that he offers and

this is why he refers to himself as the

living bread and as you said the

language it's quite graphic Justine you

mentioned this earlier as well let's

talk about the verb to eat can you say

it the Greek word for me please I I can

the actual word is strogo so the I'm

just and there are two words so the

trogo and fago which are like when we

think of eat of this flesh you just you

just eat something but it was almost

like an animal that you would gnaw at

something you would crunch something

you'd you chew something like vegetable

or an almond you know you'd gnaw on

something like so crazy and how do we

know that because the verb changes

halfway through the discourse it gets

more intense to this version that you're

talking about and other Greek literature

talks about this more graphic verb which

is like kind of liken to how animal eat

so we know that the the language is

getting intensified and he just trying

to show hey this is what I mean I'm not

talking about the symbol and this is not

and again why don't we listen to

Jonathan Jonathan says something really

interesting he quotes an author a famous

author which again Jonathan roomy wore a

t-shirt about during the Eucharistic

Congress let's just hear a little bit

about what Jonathan has to say here yeah

look a couple of things as I as I read

it just literally jump straight out at

me and if they're wrong we're going to

blame the Holy Spirit if they're

brilliant we're going to say that I came

up with it but the first thing obviously

um I'm a big fan of the brilliant

Catholic writer flaner Oona who there's

actually a film out at the moment about

her life and she's a really fascinating

you know one of the probably the

greatest Catholic novelist or short

story WR of the 20th century and some

people may have heard of this but she

famously

said if the Eucharist is a symbol then

to hell with it she said if the

Eucharist is just a symbol then to hell

with it it's a very powerful statement

she's like you know this Gospel reading

about the body of Christ about the

literal you know our most deepest

integration with the body of Christ if

it's just a symbol like FL con's words

are very powerful what's the point you

know like if it's just a symbol but then

you reframe the question saying but what

if it is exactly what the church teaches

it is

which is source and Summit right so the

the authentic Catholic teaching is that

the Eucharist is the source from which

our faith comes and it is the highest

point and expression that our faith will

ever

reach if that's true it's a very

significant thing so that struck me

there's also a brilliant quote from um

Jr token who said something kind of

similar about the Eucharist and

of all the things to love on Earth he

said in a letter to his son he said I

Jonathan roomy post about how he's

coming out with some new merchandise

there you go there you go so for those

of you who don't know the Eucharistic

Congress in Indianapolis there was um

Jonathan roomy who plays Jesus he was um

he was wearing a t-shirt he he was

saying the the quote that Jonathan was

saying there that if this is a symbol

then to hell with it and so again

Catholics and this is why so many walked

away because they Jesus was not talking

about the symbol and and um I I really

am moved by Jesus is like just immense

love for us in this like he's not trying

to be offensive this is like um Jesus in

his intimate Fierce love for us like he

knows our deep hunger he made us for him

and as we always hear like our hearts

are restless until they're found in him

and he knows our hunger and I think in

our human reality we fall into this trap

about thinking and believing that we

derive life and fulfillment from just

doing life that will only satisfy us

like temporarily it's like a little

flicker of life in us the question he's

really asking us today is not um what

are you doing to get life or to gain

life he's asking is there life in you

because he knows that he is the only one

to satisfy and so this gesture what he

is saying is nothing else is going to

satisfy you except for me and I'm not

just going to give you a tablet or a

quick fix I want to give you myself and

and I I want this life for you and I

think it's you know it blows my mind

some days I get it some days I don't get

it other days I half understand the

Eucharist but again listening to

Jonathan Doyle's interview is just so

powerful because he's really um driving

home like this UK jesus' presence in the

Eucharist is a promise for today yes a

promise for now and I just my thick head

doesn't get it but um do I run to the

Eucharist do I run to Jesus with

everything when I'm hungering for him

and I'm aware of it when I'm weary and I

don't know my Hunger for him like he

should be my default answer if things

are going right I should run to Jesus if

things are going wrong I should run to

Jesus and um I really appreciate um yeah

Jonathan sharing that that that's his

Source even for practical things like

his ideas for his work for the many

talks he has to give he runs to the

Eucharist because he runs to where the

grace is

and um I don't know that just has really

driven it home for me this three-part

series I feel like the three consecutive

gospels is really challenged me in my

own Devotion to the Eucharist and belief

in the Eucharist that is that is where

the life is it's like Jesus is our

medicine he wants to feed us in fact

let's listen to Jonathan again and he's

talking about how he's he needs this

ongoing reception of the Eucharist I

found it quite interesting take some

points down and put them in your

Catholic influencers Journal I'm a daily

mass guy and I always say to people I

never say that to sound Pious or

anything I say it because if you ever

watch The Forest Gump movie Forest Gump

famously says you know Jenny I'm not an

intelligent man I always like that line

cuz I'm like why do I go to mass every

day cuz I an intelligent man I just go

where the grace is the church tells me

that the grace is here so what I'm going

to do is just place myself where that

Grace is every single day and as a

creative I guess I wouldn't really see

myself so much as a creative but in

terms of someone who has to draft a lot

of speeches and talks the number of

times over the years that I have been to

the experience the Eucharist received

the body of Christ and the the kind of

inputs and creativity and ideas that

come to me in that moment after

communion are extraordinary um so that

is my reflection uh it is the source and

Summit it's it's what sustains in many

ways

our family life a marital life um and

so I just go where the grace is and food

for the journey John 6:56 whoever eats

my flesh and drinks my blood remains in

me whoever eats my flesh now again

English I love the English translation

but it's nowhere close to what the Greek

is saying as well to eat to to tr to

trogo it's to it's not only eating once

it's an ongoing action who keeps on

eating eating in other words it's not

the exact right translation but even

Matthew 7:7 for example one example I

give is it's it's continuity keep on

asking and you will receive keep on

seeking you will find keep on knocking

and the door will be open to you and

again in John 6 here is saying whoever

keeps on eating my flesh and keeps on

drinking my blood and remains in me you

see it's ongoing so you remain by

continuous nourishment then um then I

will give them strength now I just want

a word of theology here ecclesiology

Jesus does not die every Mass yes M okay

he's died once for all he we're not

sacrificing Jesus we get this a lot of

criticism um then say the what Catholics

are keep sacrificing keep Killing Jesus

don't sin don't don't go to two masses a

day CU you're killing Jesus twice no no

we participate in the one sacrifice it's

like I don't know the Tardis of doctor

you know you step into it and it takes

you to a particular place and time so

when we go to mass we actually take this

Tardis through this trans substanti

transubstantiation to the epiclesis and

the anamnesis and we actually end up at

the foot of the cross we end up

participating as as father Mike Schmidt

said even in the Eucharistic Congress we

participate in the salvation of humanity

and the Redemption of humanity we're

actually there present um at the foot of

of the Cross and there we can eat there

we can drink there we can find strength

in the

Eucharist and I know some people are

thinking this is ridiculous this is

crazy right how I can't even understand

what father Rob is saying but if we

understood this I think our minds would

be blown I just like I understand it a

little bit and I just every time I

celebrate Mass I feel I'm trembling I'm

shaking when I realize it sometimes I

have to take it out of my mind because I

end up having to stop w wow and just to

recap that I was think as you were

saying that I was thinking of that very

small social media clip that I did see

of father Mike schmidtz and we talk

about this in our course on the mass as

well this moment of anamneses and that

supercharged I think I read a book once

I can't remember what it was but it's

saying this supercharged moment during

the mass it's actually just before the

amen when the priest is holding up Jesus

in the bread and in the wine through him

and with him and in him that moment is a

representation yes um of Calvary to the

father so that's when we're

participating in such an amazing thing

so beautiful and one person that has

recently been a bit of a buzz I guess

even just in my newsfeed is um blessed

Carlo cutus and his strong devotion um

to the Blessed Sacrament and I think um

he set up a website with all these

Eucharistic Miracles present on I think

you can still see it so they've kept his

website live but um I found some really

beautiful quotes that he you know said

of um of the true presence um of the

Eucharist and one of which I'll share

now he said Jesus is Love and he has

made himself food and drink for us in

the Eucharist the more we nourish

ourselves on the body blood soul and

Divinity of Christ the more we will be

able to love the Eucharist configures us

in a special way to God who is love it's

like we don't get we don't may not fully

understand this reality but it's

happening despite our understanding or

lack thereof like that's the cool thing

about God being transcendental as I walk

up to mass we have a beautiful cathedral

here and it's a long walk and I just

just keep thinking to myself I'm

about to encounter Christ

physically and and it's just you know

Dorothy Day used to say you know that

yeah she goes you you go to Del Mass she

said you can end up acquiring a certain

kind of habit but then she just went on

to say it doesn't change the fact that

it's it's it's it is our Lord think

about it I mean you know it's the old

thing but you know like greatest product

in the world with the worst marketing

department we forget that if this is

true The Sovereign pure subsistent god

of the

cosmos is choosing to allow us to

receive him into the most central part

of our existence you know we are a

culture a global culture that is what we

call

disenchanted and by disenchanted it

means we're a culture that is highly

stimulated but has genuinely lost a

sense of transcendent Supernatural

realities and the reason I mentioned

that is because that's not the default

human setting like every human

civilization before Christianity all the

civilizations of antiquity going right

back to the Babylonians Assyrians

Persians they're all they're all deeply

Pagan but to be Pagan meant that they

actually saw Supernatural realities all

around them they just saw the wrong ones

right so the the default human setting

in Latin it's called capx day which

means capacity for God we we're actually

the kind of being that is designed for

the Supernatural and the Transcendent

and we just we just happen to inhabit a

particular historical moment with the

post Enlightenment Ascent of science

where people are kind of like we can

only explain reality through these

parameters but there are you know sorry

to ruin people's days but there is a

vast reality that's going on all around

us that is much much bigger than uh what

can be Quantified in the heart of our

ministry lies the generosity of our icon
