Transcripts
can you actually get over someone you
love months years later hearing their
name or that song or even just some
random flashback to that time they said
that one thing can put me in fight or
flight to still spend evenings wasting
tears on someone who remained in my head
far longer than they ever were in my
life and I wish I could decide who I
feel this way towards
it's miserable for me to think about all
of the truly amazing people I've passed
along the way to chase one
person it feels like such an unjust
betrayal as if this person never
considered your feelings or how much you
cared and so you tell yourself that you
are in fact the victim of Simply loving
too much but that's not true no matter
how much it protects your ego at the end
of the day for the most part this person
more or less cared about you that hurts
even more they cared about you and
didn't mean to hurt you and in reality
fading feelings and difficult
circumstances have no association with
how much someone truly wishes you to be
happy it was easier to blame them and
villainize them it is time to grow
up truth is it wasn't going to work out
and so you end up in this dreadfully
lonely situation where they don't want
to be with you and want the best for you
and know that forcing things will
actually make it worse and your loved
ones and Friends also feel the same way
they also want you to get over this they
know this person wasn't right for you
and want you to move on and there's a
part of you that wants to move on also
to get over them and recognize that if
it was meant to be it would have
happened but you end up in this deeply
lonely place where everyone really wants
you to move on because truthfully that's
what's best everyone wants what is best
for you and yet your heart goes on you
the only person who still wants them no
matter the pain it may cause you some
part of you insists that your life
cannot persist without them despite all
of the lights turning on and the
audience leaving you stay in your seat
and insist that the movie isn't over
you're completely alone in the theater
everybody has left it's
over there's a part of this that gives
me a strange sense of connection I am
not the only one who can't get over
someone in fact I would guess that many
of the people I pass daily on the bus on
the train on the street my friends and
family they all suffer these strikes of
pained nostalgia and yearning that force
them to reconcile with the absurdity of
romantic love and the indifference of
our cold world upon their little secret
wounds here I feel a little closer to
everyone and it finally answers the
question I had when I was a kid why do
so many adults look so miserable why do
they seem so humbled by reality why are
they a little scared when they speak
maybe this is just a naive hope I had to
Traverse the Romantic World unscathed to
not grow up well scathed we are but at
least we're in this together and yes it
sucks moments of potential intimacy are
disturbed by the hauntings of a person
who stopped thinking about you months
ago like some sort of recurring illness
I am sometimes halted dead in my tracks
forced to lie in bed and Weep For No
Good Reason I'll admit fr frustratingly
that I was happier before all this
happened but I would also argue that
this happiness was the sort experienced
as a child before you learn about taxes
and wars and even pimples it's a sort of
happiness for toddlers and babies it is
limited and fragile in the face of
change and yes I'll admit that I miss
this happiness at times first love that
is true love or depending on on who you
ask obsessive love is so pure in its
blind and innocent March to the edge and
we fall and we can never quite get back
up but there's something about being
here at the bottom with all of the other
Fallen lovers and dreamers who still get
up every day and go to work and go on
dates and write poetry perhaps not in
search of that purile happiness but
rather to prove to themselves and others
that life does go on that we don't get
over the loss of those we love but that
shouldn't stop us from living nor should
we these are scars that shape us that
remind us that we had at once felt so
much we were willing to risk it all and
that despite how things turned out we
are still here willing to give life
another chance and maybe when the time
is right to give love another chance a
heavier and hopefully more real
love I'll also admit that moments of
Happiness are rarer nowadays yes I walk
around with that chip on my shoulder
that marks adulthood and I try my best
to shrug off the cynical belief that
I'll never feel those feelings again I
still drift into victimhood into anger
into that useless narrative that I had
been L on somehow that this person made
the wrong choice that if I had done this
or that differently things would have
been better or at the very least less
embarrassing none of this is necessarily
true nobody is responsible for my
feelings and also I tried my best and
they did too in their own way and while
my heart will continue to insist that a
life without them is worthless I
recognize that my heart isn't the
captain on this Voyage or at the very
least it isn't my soul
Navigator Destiny and love and reason
and wisdom and dumb luck I never had a
chance in the face of choosing my fate
I'm really just crawling in the dark
here towards those lights at the end of
the tunnel hoping that they aren't
oncoming
trains from this understanding I've
softened my grip on life who is to say
what will happen who I'll meet where
we're all heading all I know is that now
when I'm happy it does have some real
weight to it they are still there of
course tucked between my loes and maybe
save some labotomy there they'll remain
and still in spite of this life is worth
living how amazing is it that so many of
us without sharing a word go through
this very experience that so many of us
insist on pushing on in spite of losing
that special someone I think that this
fact itself the universal experience of
never quite getting over someone and
still choosing your life choosing you
keeps me going perhaps we never truly
get over the ones we love we simply
learn to live with their absence as best
we can in this moment we choose the only
form of love that's ever really
guaranteed the love we have for
ourselves
