상위권 대학 이라 하면 미국 대학 중에서 상위 20위 안에 드는 학교를

노릴 때 우리 학생들이 어떤 것들을 가지고 가야 그래도 입학할 수 있는

확률이 조금 더 높아질 수 있는지

그것에 대해서 알아보는 시간을 가져보도록 하겠습니다

아주 기본적인 사항들은 제가 약 2달 전 올려드린 설명회 동영상 1시간 짜리 동영상을 참고하시면

오늘 제가 말씀드릴 사항은 그것보다는 조금 더 디테일한 내용들입니다

자 우리 학생들이 대학을 입학 함에 있어서 고려해야 될 사항들

항상 말씀드리는 그것들을 지금 써놨는데요 GPA 는 당연히 높으면 높을수록 좋다

그러기 위해선 AP 개수를많이 들어야 하고 | 좋은 성적을 가지고 있어야지 Weighted GPA 가 좋아진다

그래서 GAP는 항상 좋은 점수를 유지해야 된다는거 당연히 아시고 계실거고요

그리고 두번째 Standardized Test 테스트는 sat 와 act 인데

대략적으로 기준선을 잡아 보자면

SAT가 1,500점 이상, ACT 가 34점 이상이라면 30위권 이상의 학교를 지원 할수가 있게 되겠고

제가 오늘 집중적으로 말씀드릴 내용은

3번. Extracurricular activity 입니다 다른 부분에 비해서 좀 애매한 구석이 있어서 그런데요

GPA 같은 경우에 높으면 "아! 내가 좋은 학교를 갈 수 있겠구나" 하는 믿음

그리고 SAT나 ACT 같은경우도 "내가 고득점을 받으면 좋은 학교를 한번 지원해 봐야지" 하겠다는

믿음이 있는 반면에 Extracurricular activity 같은 경우는 큰 상을 받지 않는 한 내가 지금 하고 있는 이러한 활동들이 과연

내가 내년에도 또 하고 내후년 에도 또 했을 때 대학에서 긍정적으로 바라봐 줄까 하는 의구심이 항상 들고 있기 때문에

자, 여러분 만약에 우리 학생이 GPA가 완벽에 가까울 정도로 너무나도 좋고

그리고 SAT나 ACT 점수가 거의 만점에 까깝게 아주 좋은 성적을 갖고 있는데

Extracurricular activity가 거의 없다시피 한 학생, 과연 우리 20위권 안에, Top tier 라고 할 수 있는 이런 학교에 입학이 가능할까요?

제가 생각했을 때는 Extracurricular activity가 없다면 위의 두가지의 성적이 아무리 좋아도 대학을 입학하기가 굉장히 어렵습니다

그렇기 때문에 Extracurricular activity엄청나게 중요한 요소라고 할 수 있겠는데요

Extracurricular activity가 어떤 것이 있는지 크게 여러가지로 나눠보도록 하겠습니다.

보면 음악이 있겠고, 음악 같은 경우는 자기가 악기를 다루는 걸 수도 있고

코러스 라고 하죠? 성악을 할 수도 있고

그리고 Art 같은 경우에는 미술 드로잉을 할 수도 있고, 뭔가 조소, 만든 것을 할 수도 있겠죠

그래서 이렇게 음악과 미술 나눠 줄 수가 있고

그리고 여러분들이 알다시피 스포츠, 각종 구기 종목을 포함해서

뭐 펜싱 수영 기타 등등 많은 종목의 스포츠 들을 우리 학생들이 하고 있습니다.

그리고 Academic Competition 이런 것들은 이제

우리 교과목 이랑 관련된 컴페티션들이에요 수학 영어 과학 이 분야에 걸쳐서

이런 각종대회에 출전을 해서 어느정도 상을 받는 것

그러한 활동들 이런 것을 얘기하는것이고

그리고 여기는 Honor Society Club 이라든지 우리 학생들이 주기적으로 모여서

우리학교 학생들 말고 다른 학교 또는 다른 지역의 학생들이랑 모여서 뭔가를 계속하는그런 활동들을

제가 다 그냥 싸잡아서 리더십에 관련된 클럽 활동이라고 묶어 놨습니다.

그래서 크게 이렇게 5가지 Extracurricular activity로 나눌 수가 있는데요

제가 저번 설명회에서도 말씀드렸지만 요즘 (대입)트렌드는 예전 트렌드랑 좀 달라서

제가 지금부터 말씀드리는 것은 한 4,5년 전쯤에 우리 학생이 입학한 기준으로 보시면

조금 다를 수가 있기 때문에 제가 요즘 트렌드에 맞춰서 Extracurricular activity를

어떻게 구성을 하는 것이 학교에서 좋아하는 것인지 말씀드려 보도록 하겠습니다

이 Activity 들은 교내에서 하는 활동과 교외에서 하는 활동들이 있죠

그것을 구분해서 또 생각을 해야 되긴 하지만 그것들을 구분해서 말씀을 드리면

너무나도 내용이 길어지기 때문에 그것들을 다 싸잡아서 설명을 드려 보도록 하겠습니다

일단 Extracurricular activity에서 가장 중요한 부분은 제가 늘 말씀 드렸듯이

Diversity (다양성) 입니다.

다양하게 액티비티를 한 학생들을 최근에는 굉장히 좋아합니다 다양함 이라는 것은 오해하지 마셔야 될 게

음악도 하고 미술도 하고 스포츠도 하고 그리고 각종 아카데미 관련된 대회도 나가고

이런 클럽들 에도 전부다 가입되어 있어야 한다. 이런 말은 전혀 아닙니다

그러니까 각 영역의 모두다 발을 담그라는 그런 말은 아니고요

몇 개 영역만 정해서 그 안에서 다양하게 활 동 하라는 그런 뜻이 였는데요

예를 들어서 설명을 해보도록 하겠습니다

제가 만약에 미술하고 이런 (리더십 관련)액티비티, 두가지를 선택을 했다고 가정을 해보면

여기서도 리더십에 관련된 여러 클럽들이 있고 여러 액티비티 들이 있잖아요

그래서 그것들을 다양하게 참가를 해서 경험을 해보고

그리고 미술 같은 경우도 동네에서 또는 이렇게 작은 스테이트 안에서 뭔가를상을 주는 대회 뿐만이 아니라

그거보다 더 넓은 영역 그리고 해외까지 International Student 까지

전부 다 아우르는 그런 대회 들이 굉장히 많이 있기 때문에

내가 한 작품을 만들었으면 그거에 대해서 여러 대회에 출전을 하고 다른 의미 있는

다양한 수상경력을 받을 수 있게 되는 그런 컴페티션 종류의 것들이 굉장히 많기 때문에

그런 것들을 다양하게 준비하고 참여하라는 것이지

이 모든 영역들을 다 발을 담궈서 참여 할 필요는 없다. 이렇게 말 할 수 있겠습니다.

그래서 요즘 트렌드는 우리 대학들에서 이렇게 다양한 활동을 하는 학생들을

좀 선호하는 경향이 있었고 그리고 두번째는 Weight 이라고 제가 써 놨는데요.

무게죠. 그 Activity가 얼마나 무게감이 있느냐 사실 이건 바꿔 말하면

결과가 어느정도 나왔느냐 이제 뭐 이런 것인데 그러니까 이런 아카데믹한 컴페티션 같은 데를

지원만 해서 계속 도전을 하는 것 보다는 수상 경력이 있어야 된다는 것이죠

사실 이것은 굉장히어려운 일이기도 하지만 다년간 한 영역에서 준비를 하고

그 준비한 과정이 제대로 되었다면 이렇게 weight을 주는 것은

이 중 한 영역에서 충분히 가능한 일이라고 생각합니다.

그래서 우리 학생들이 이 두개가 같이 담보가 되어 있다면 액티비티가 굉장히 strong한 학생 일거구요

만약에 이것이 힘들다면 한 두개라도 해서 Weight을 줘서,

그러니까 조금 더 높은 수준의 상장 같은 것을 받아 온다면

엑티비티가 여러분들이 생각하시는 것 같은 그런 훅 이라던지

스파이크가 될 수가 있는 거겠죠

Writing Competition !

이거 사실 아카데믹 컴페티션 범주 안에 들어가는 것인데 제가 이렇게 따로 써놓은 이유는 그만큼 중요하기 때문인데요

제가 아까 말씀드렸듯이 음악 이라든지 미술이 라든지 운동 이라든지

아니면 수학 과학 영어 이런 파트에서 어떤 상을 받으면

굉장히 좋은 액티비티 인데 그렇게 큰 상을 받는 것이 우리 일반적인 학생들은 굉장히 어렵습니다. 쉽지가 않죠

그런데 이 라이팅 컴페티션 같은 경우에는 결론부터 말씀을 드리면,

라이팅 컴페티션에 에서는 작은 상을 받더라도 다른 영역에서 큰 상을 받은 것 만큼의 효과를 낼수 가 있기 때문입니다.

자 그 이유는요, 우리 대학을 입학을 하면 고등학교에서도 우리 학생들이 많이 경험했듯이

각종 에세이와 글을 써서 제출해야 되는 것들이 굉장히 많습니다

그런데 대학을 들어가게 되면 여러분들이 생각하는 이과 문과, 그러니까 STEM 계열 또는 Language 나 Liberal arts

이런 계열 구분없이 전부 다 작문과제도 굉장히 많고 여러가지 프로젝트도 많아서

작문 형식의, 라이팅 형식의 레포트를 제출하는 일이 굉장히 많죠

그러다 보니까 우리 학생들이 영어, 라이팅 실력이 충분히 갖춰져 있지 않다면 그 대학에서는 우리 학교에서 수업을 들을 만한 자격이 되지 않겠다

이렇게 생각을 해서 라이팅 실력이 부족한 학생들은 선호하지 않는 경향이 있습니다

그렇기 때문에 라이팅(작문) 파트에서 어느 정도 소기의 성과만 우리 학생들이 가져간다고 하면

대학에서 그러한 의구심 들을 많이 잠재울 수 있기 때문에 훨씬 더 좋은 평가를 받을 수가 있게 된다는 것이죠

저희 학생들 기준으로 GPA 와 SAT 점수가 비슷한 학생을 기준으로 생각했을 때

이런 다른 영역에서 큰 상을 받은 학생과 라이팅영역에서 큰상 는 아니더라도 어느정도 대학에서의 우리 학생의 영어 실력의 의구심을 해소 할 만큼의

어느정도의 성과만 가져가도 비슷한 영향으로 비슷한 학교를 입학하는 경우를 저희가 많이 목격했기 때문에

그래서 제가 거듭 라이팅 컴페티션, 작문 대회를 굉장히 강조를 드리는 것입니다

자, 그래서 우리가 이러한 Writing Competition을 어떻게 준비해야 되는 것이냐

그리고 또 어떤 각종대회 들이 있느냐 이것이 문제인데요

라이팅 컴페티션은 진입장벽이 굉장히 높은 것 서부터

진입장벽이 상대적으로 낮은 그런 대회들이 있는데요
