Highlights
Proposed a new deep learning model called Transformer that relies entirely on attention mechanisms.
Showed that Transformer models outperform RNNs and CNNs on machine translation tasks.
Introduced multi-headed attention which allows models to jointly attend to information from different positions.
Demonstrated that attention-based models are more parallelizable and require significantly less time to train.
Provided strong empirical results across multiple datasets showing Transformer can achieve state-of-the-art performance in translation.
Suggested Transformer architecture has potential to become the dominant sequence transduction model across NLP tasks.
Showed attention weights provide insights into how the model works and attends to different parts of the input sequence.
Presented ablation studies analyzing the impact of different components like positional encodings.
Demonstrated the scaleability of Transformer models by training on large datasets with tens of millions of sentence pairs.
Highlighted the reduced need for language-specific components with Transformer's unified architecture.
Discussed potential societal impacts of improved translation models and ethical considerations.
Pointed out limitations of Transformer such as quadratic self-attention complexity and difficulties modeling cyclic dependencies.
Suggested future work on combining the strengths of convolutional and attention-based approaches.
Overall, presented a major advance in sequence modeling that sparked widespread adoption of attention mechanisms across NLP.
Paper received best paper award at NeurIPS 2017, demonstrating its significant contributions to the field.

all righty welcome back I'm your man bad
Chad and Queen jolene's on the camera
and we are on air today is I'm going to
tackle the hood and me saying that you
obviously realize that Jolene guessed I
did not get it Prime um she's a very
smart lady the Hood um I've been going
over the hood in my brain over my brain
over my brain I can Louver it I can put
the original stainless back on it with
the hood emblem head on
it um or I could make it smooth it off
and and fill everything in so it's
smooth I've made the decision that I
want a smooth Hood um and the reason I
made that decision that I want to smooth
Hood because I want like I said before
um we're just going to paint it a color
another thing they're going on too
Jolene is going to pick the color she
has not told me yet she's going to pick
the interior color the whole bit the
only thing I asked was to keep it I
guess they call it traditional so that
would just be a basic color a blue a red
a green or a yellow or whatever black so
on so forth um I like to get her to pick
the color I basically want to keep the
car looking like it could have maybe
could have been a 50 like it is or 50
obviously it is but I'm just changing a
few things by customizing things but the
hood has to be dealt with I thought if I
loued it it would take it into a
different spot
in I guess it would classify somewhere
is different
in I guess traditional some of them lber
their hoods obviously but what I'm
thinking is I just want to keep it clean
I have a v or thing going down here in
the middle that I want to get rid of to
make it clean uh the hood is a little
bit messed messed up on this side this
side doesn't feel that bad generally um
not a lot of people know it but when
when you have the hood on your car and
you think oh yeah just needs a paint job
and you go to get the paint job then
then the body man feels it over
sometimes it needs a lot lot more than a
body man like and sometimes it's quite
something else like right here is really
quite something else like there's 1 2 3
4 five like it's quite dented up there I
thought maybe if I led
it it would take that out of it but I
don't I don't think I want to do that to
this car I want just want to keep it
clean obvious and also I want
to uh bring this to attention we me and
Jolene picked this this morning uh we
talked her down to $30 it was a little
antique store that we went to most every
other day or whatever Twice As Nice in
Port Williams if you ever come to this
area you go across the Port Williams
Bridge on the left hand side there's a
little store there called Twice As Nice
check it out and um there it's a lot of
fun just to look you know what I mean
you're looking at stuff that you might
like you might never seen before
whatever but anyways he had this hood
ornament in there Jolene picked it up
quick quickly she said I like that um so
I said let's let's do it the Chrome on
it is quite nice I'm not sure what it's
off of I'm thinking o mobile that's what
I'm thinking so I've stuck it on here
and I have not stuck it on the back yet
CU there's obviously no hole for it but
I do like I do like it um I don't need
the stainless going up to the middle but
I do like the hood ornament that's on it
uh J notice that the front's quite
pointed out just like our headlights you
know sort of thing but what I want to do
is I want to get rid of that line first
and then and then we'll put this on or
check it out see what happen see if we
like it or not and then we'll go for it
This Hood like there's many different
ways to do this piece through here and
I'm going to talk about them before I do
them I could take the
welder clean up the spot the hole weld
the hole up grind it off and try to
feather it off the best they could
welded up the hole so on so forth every
time you do that sort generally you end
up
warping you generally end up warping a
little bit of it cuz you're filling
quite a hole there
you can put something underneath of it
and do it that way if you want to but in
all natural fact you still have all this
Gap here to fill full of filler um if
you w that hole up um sometimes I think
sometimes I think the best way is to put
tape on the underneath sides under
underneath of the hole tape scratch that
out nice um Dent that down around the
hole a little bit put a punch in and
just knock it down a little bit and then
you can fiberglass that and with the
tape on the other side it'll mushroom it
on the other side and then it won't come
off if you have this side nice and sand
it and score it up you know with a die
grinder or whatever tape underneath of
it fiberglass and fill it so you could
do it that
way I've made up my mind how I want to
do it I want to stick a piece of metal
in there and the reason being I just
don't want that Big Blob of fiberglass
in the center I don't want that and the
reason being I don't want that is
because um this is what I've noticed a
few times if if there is like you spot
well a hood scoop on I've noticed it if
the heat is quite High underneath the
hood it'll shrink it so the you can see
it like every once in a while you know
if you got a good eye and you own the
car and you're washing it in the once in
a while you'll see where has shrunken
where the hole is and it'll it'll just
bug you piss you off whatever just get
on your nerve no one else will see it
but it'll just get on you where
sometimes it'll shrink there so
basically I I want to get away from that
totally allog together I'm going to run
a little piece of metal down through the
middle of it I'm going to tack it on
either side quickly I'm not going to try
not to disturb the
hood at all I'm hoping not disturb it at
all then I want to Flap or wheel it off
and then I'm going to Glass it so it
becomes one that's how I want to do it I
think I want to take a look underneath
first we'll take underneath look first
see how what's going on just make sure
I'm going to do the right
thing now
we
have we have a screw back there bolt
that in that's fine so I can knock that
on it's not going to hurt nothing not
going to hurt
nothing not going to hurt a dang thing
let's let's uh let's do it this side on
on the underneath side if you were
thinking about if you lift that up
you're going to see them holes well you
can put a little something that easy
enough and little fiberglass from the
underneath sides up through piece of
piss Let's Do It um my glasses
right
there thanks for coming back we really
appreciate it and uh there's a lot of
things to a car you know you got the you
got the fender you got the door you got
the quarter panel you got the trunk lid
you got the other quarter panel you got
the other like it it goes right around
the circles and generally if you know
just for shits and giggles I'm thinking
to strip down to paint $22,000 a panel
is what I'm thinking if you want to add
it up for yourself don't know if you can
get it done for that or not but
that's basically what I'm
thinking I have a dirty piece of metal
here I want a piece to run down the
center and I'm going to guess no I'm
going to walk back there for a second s
Jolene Jolene looks amazing today as
always as
always I want this little piece to go
down inside the center of that piece I
don't want to stick out you know I mean
I don't want it I don't want it up here
on top like that I want it in there so
when I tag it on I can flush that weld
off and also have this metal um to
adhere the fiberglass to also to have
not as much filler as needs to fill that
hole there so I'm just thinking
that that's what I
want I'm hoping that's
it so you make the decision how you want
to do it but in all natural fact it is
your decision and like I was saying to
Jolie this
morning the quicker I make up my mind
the quicker I can do the
job that crooker under the Rams wor that
down the end huh how thin that is we'll
have to do it again and we'll just take
another one off that
one that won't hurt nothing that'll make
the fire blast stick in there better
if you know what I'm trying to say cuz
there's going to be a little bit of Gap
in there it doesn't matter to me there's
a little bit of Gap in there um if
there's Gap in between this piece of
metal and so fiberglass can go down
through into the hood underneath then
that means you know what that means it's
harder to get off and that's a good
thing no I guess maybe it's turned a
little bit let's go check it out
got two pieces it's always nice to have
something you know I probably wouldn't
would not have went and searched that um
Shear out but a good friend that Lori is
um look at that now would you it's nice
put inside the the Gap we can tack it in
there this will take place of some
fill going knock them two screws down a
little bit we'll knock them down with
the grinder cuz they're not coming out
they're not coming out
okay let's knock those true screws down
we'll clean some paint off I already
said the best way to clean paint off is
that thing right there that is the best
I uh and I'll give the reasons
why I've had a car brought to me uh
stripped down with a sander wheel or a
flapper wheel you get on them places
right there like that and you you sure
can destroy something so quick with a
flapper wheel or a sanding wheel or
whatever that's on the edge here you you
can destroy it with this thing here is
not taking any metal away it's peeling
the paint off and it doesn't destroy the
metal I guess is what I'm getting at um
one thing has
been I guess where the holes are all
welded up on the side of the car you
know every time that big spot you know
gets W that little spot gets welded and
it gets ground and every time that gets
Mis abused so poorly if you ever want to
go back in there and and use them holes
again there's probably generally never a
chance that that's going to be a good
spot to go because the Metal's not going
to be
there that's my little tip all right I'm
just going to clean the edges of this so
I can tack that metal on let's do
that
I don't want to tear all the paint off I
just want to Mor get some get some paint
off or whatever it's on there off so I
can tack that piece of metal
on
and then if you stay to the end of the
video we'll put that thing on the hood
the hood to emblem I thinking all righty
which one do I
want sander wheel's try no I'm going to
go the zip cut the reason I'm going to
go the zip cut is because I'll be able
to fine-tune it a little bit more I'll
put it right on its Edge and what I mean
by them them screws going in there them
Flathead screws I'm leaving them there
because they are doing it their job
but they're not coming out so I'm going
to weld over top of
them I got to D
down
[Applause]
didn't hit anything but the
screws that's a good thing that's a good
thing cuz I don't want to take metal
away I just want to knock the head of
the screw down so I can
get just body field brag
so I can
get piece of metal Aid down on top of
that that's what I want we cut that
piece of
metal all I'm trying to do is put that
strip of metal down there cuz I want to
take
away from some of the filler that has to
go in there and I don't want the
fiberglass to go down in the
[Music]
hole how much more do I need of those
they're a little bit on
a what can I say this is it's not
[Music]
bad proba it could be like a tad wider
you know what I
mean let's try it let's do a t
wider
guess it doesn't
matter just look down through the hole
here you can see where it's cut supposed
to cut not saying it does but it's where
it's supposed to
cut
looks way better looks way better just
wonder if I can get another
one okay I'll take
it
keep your fingers
crossed all right let's do
it way
better let's take them and set them
aside for a second they're not
throwaways ooh much better much better
love it much better
awesome all right now I'm just going to
roll I got a round end up there so I'll
just take and sand that off on this end
let's plug this bad boy
in so we're really going to try to get
this thing in primer fairly you know
quick as possible like I mean I got the
hood left to do there's a few other
things left to do but
trying
[Applause]
no real big burs on that
piece that fits there nice that's
awesome let's get the welder
going I am not going to weld this in
continuously uh and the reason being is
I feel like it's not
necessary and uh if you anytime any
chance you feel it's not necessary then
you do your thing but I feel like me
welding that all through there you'll
see what I'm going to do I'm going to
show you I'm going to show
you I would
say what can I
say if someone was going to weld that
shot
completely I would say it's more
for looks than anything because you're
still going to have to fill that oat
through the middle of the hood you're
not going to just paint it after you
weld down through the middle of the hood
you I think you would have to realize
that you don't have to realize
anything
[Music]
there's a question how do you know what
makes you
happy well when you're doing something
and you start to smile just be aware
that you have smiled that's what makes
you happy if you know what I'm trying to
tell
you let's do this I'm hoping we can do
this fairly quick you know within the
time within the time
all righty I'm going to go over on this
I I have to go up here to do this and
the reason being is is I can't I
cannot I'm going to go up here I'm going
to tack it once to hold it for
me and then I'm going
to my he put my glove on it just cuz you
know why I want to try to take some of
the heat away from it that's
all my glove will do that you
know
take a piece of leather heat it up and
watch it take the heat leather will take
the heat I think that's why they make
the gloves out of it I
guess just tacking it down on either
side so it's tight we want it tight and
right and we're going to get in here and
make it
right I like it right
[Music]
there we should have no fear of of
warping the hood with spotting it should
have no fear I'm hoping no
[Music]
fear just put a little aggressive on
it
[Music]
want to get down in
there good to
me
good to me to me that's a good thing
where I've got that little tiny Gap
going see that little good little Gap
going on there fiberglass will go down
in there man you're not digging that
out you might think you can what you're
not going to you cut the hood off or cut
the hood out basically is what I'm
trying to tell
you not going to do
it
[Music]
beautiful all right let's get another
little actually I'm going to hit the
other
[Music]
side
I'll do this for your
[Music]
sweetheart figure it's a not a bad spot
too wed onto the hood where it's bent
like the Hood's flat like it's got that
little flat part in the center then it's
got a Bend up and a Bend out it really
would stretch that metal really nice
where that's bent it probably helped out
making the hood to make the hood tight
this little Center piece probably you
know if they were making the Hood skin
um so I'm I'm feeling I'm feeling okay
spotting it on there I don't feel like
it's hurting
whatsoever just make sure I get it down
around with that bolt or them nuts there
now we got the other piece to put
on let's
[Music]
cut got our famous cutter here you can
never have too many pieces to cut a
piece of or too many ways to cut a piece
of metal that is for sure never have too
many
ways we're going to go
there I'm going
to do
this this
out
we'll flush it
up I'm going to leave that front hole
for that piece that hood ornament I'm
going to try it if it comes down to that
I'll weld that hole shot up I have to
don't want to but I will if I have
to but we kind of like the emblem emblem
or the hood ornament I call it I guess
[Music]
Hood
[Music]
sander when you're
close and you know you're close um think
of the sander first you know I mean if
you're going to if you're close you
might as well think of the sander first
cuz the sander has a little here a
little bit more o that fit
nice
stop
it oh sorry messed with her shot I get
[Music]
a what do the wires beat up on that
thing slow it down a little
bit we fitting I like a
glove
[Music]
take some of the heat out of
[Music]
[Music]
it
all righty let's go up here and try to
make it right so be rock and roll here
[Music]
again I think we should be all
right with that distance I'm
thinking yeah I think I'm going show up
should be all right
[Music]
what I mean by that distance is me
welding down the hood without giving it
a break and that's what I'm saying don't
feel anything going going
[Music]
anywhere you can picture how hard a day
is at the the summertime on a black ha
we're not getting it that hot I don't
think we
[Music]
[Music]
are
[Music]
like I said just wrap my glove over it
just take try to take some of the Heat
and it
[Music]
[Music]
does all
[Music]
righty
I think that's the end of that that's
where I want to go with that that's the
end of that I'm
thinking take a little bit of heat off
it the hood has been sand at right first
thing Doug sanded the car Dam first
thing so um we're basically we sanded
the car down if when I put the filler on
the very first time and it did not
adhere here um sometimes you get the the
newer panels you put on cars you have
that black primer on them you sand them
and then you put a little filler on them
if you have any of that black primer on
those panels that come you know
replacement panel the the pre the
fiberglass or the body fill will come
right off again like the the the paint
will not hold or will not adhere with
the with the fiberglass or the body fill
on this one here when we sand it all
down we have to sand it down to find out
we have when I applied filler um it did
not act like that it act really nice it
was able to feather off paint stay on
everything worked like that so that's
why um basically we're doing what we're
doing is because everything is working
um if it was not working i' have to
change up the method would I not uh on
this one everything seems to be
good
h
[Applause]
just want to knock off the heads of the
welds now I want to hit the center of
the metal going up
through
now what I what I went up the middle for
is because the metal in the middle was
just a fresh cut piece of metal it had
not have any score marks in it
whatsoever I've hit all the little
places of where I've welded on knocked
the heads down that is not coming off
unless you cut it
off and we're not going to do
that I'm going to clean it off with
this she a br there for some reason it's
there I want to take the shadow away
from the well that's what I'm looking at
you can see the shadow what do you mean
by the shadow it's the blue part of when
you w you can see where it's burnt I
just wanted to take that burnt look out
of it I don't enjoy it so I just want to
get it out of
there get it out there clean it up make
it look the best you can basically
that's all we're doing with this stuff
is make it look the best you can Jolene
looks trying on some clothes today for
her mean her trip away I'm a lucky man
I'm lucky
me all righty that's basically
exactly how it looks right there at the
present moment let's get some fiberglass
going we're going to do the trick that
we always do or generally do that's
really good nothing has been warped up
we're taking space that was down inside
the hood there's no heat going to come
up through or I don't feel there's going
going to be no heat to come up through
to um shrink anything because it's it's
laying on a piece of metal so we should
be
good let's do
this
and
remember this is
not
not the only way for it to be done this
is just one way and I'm showing you my
way this is fiberglass resin I do it
very often is I mix Automotive resin
fiberglass resin matte resin that you
mix up with a her I generally will throw
it in my fiberglass Auto Body reinforced
body filler fiberglass reinforced body
filler and the reason I throw that in
there is because I want it to reduce the
thickness of it so it's thinner and it
will run a little bit better and it
applies
easier take it if you like it throw it
away if you
don't and you'd be a fool if you didn't
basically it's
free nice and runny so when I go to put
that on that piece that we put on there
I'm hoping that the fiberglass well that
the fiberglass will make sure that it
gets down in around there where has not
been completely welded and seal it off
and make it super duper so it' be tired
to get
off and I suggest anything like you do
that on the hood you do with your your
fiberglass your fiberglass does take
more heat than Feller does and the
reason I know this is because when when
you go to weld on something if you're
welding theide filler it'll come off
quite quickly if you weld beside
fiberglass generally it it will stay on
there unless you're looking for it to
come off that's sounds now I
know so we are actually I don't know
what the step of the this is called
smoothing the Hood um is that what it's
called smoothing the
hood I'll just put it on and then I'll
run a line down through and run it off
just like the drywallers get it on and
then play with
it
now that would been a good chance to
actually Peak the
hood mean might mean by Peak you see
what I got going on there now um you'd
have a little peak in the center
well with what we got going
on we can almost throw a peak down to
the center of that
hood and
uh just see what
happens J you you run a piece of round
rod down through there and Peak your
hood I don't want that down in there
nope I don't want I don't want that
either
let's go this
way it wasn't such a good pass was it
was terrible
pass terrible
pass another terrible
pass
let's get it over there in the center if
we
can that's better a little
better don't want that down in
there just going to take and run this
over just a little bit if we
can
[Music]
H some reason I wish I had
more
one more
pass Doug would have been proud of that
one that both of
them come
on Doug be proud of
me you know
what
as you can
tell that uh takes a little while for
that stuff to really Hur up too with
that fiberglass resin so it gives you a
little time to play with it which is
nice I'm going to leave it just like
that it's not bad not bad at
all that was
fantastic so that fiberglass is nice and
running
um no doubt in my mind it will go down
in
around in there that is a good thing cuz
that'll make it stronger cuz it's not
coming off or going
anywhere um I'm going to have to you got
to be careful where you drop this stuff
cuz if you drop it on the car you're
going to be sanding it off that's that's
for
sure so what we'll do this is what I'm
going to do this is what we'll do um you
can see how I have the fiberglass on
there now
basically what's going to happen you
know what happens after fiberglass is a
BTY
filler but I still have the trunk lid
left to do there's a something I want to
do on the trunk lid um what I'll H what
I'll do is I'll leave the hood like this
for now um we'll we'll just actually
shut the video call her a time because
I'm not going to sit here and wait for
this but uh if you come back tomorrow um
I'll do I'll finish off the hood and
we'll do the trunk lid together tomorrow
cuz that's got to piece that I want to
put in it cuz it's got a piece in for
the license plate and all stuff I don't
want that there I want it smoothed off
like the hood you come back tomorrow
you'll get to
see our new hood emblem go on and if
anybody knows what it's from you're more
than welcome to comment thank you very
much give me a little comment there what
it is and I'm thinking that we're going
to end up putting that on there cuz it
looks good the Chrome is good makes us
happy you can also give Jolene some
information or not information but uh
choices of color for a
traditional costum or hot rod whatever
just a traditional car we don't want to
have pearls and Flakes and I I don't
feel like that's traditional we want
just a nice clean paint job on it and
keep it the way you know so you could
tell it's a 50 that has been changed a
lot though that's all um and then we'll
do the we'll do the trunk lid I'll show
you how I'm going to do that smooth that
off and then we'll be able to put the
hood Orman on thanks everybody for
coming back I really appreciate it it's
it's it's by choice it's by choice if
you want to take the day and and weld
that up and grind that off so you can't
tell or try to it's your
choice I feel like this right here uh
will not fail um and I feel like it's a
good choice for me I like the time it
took and it's
okay and if it's your car and you want
to do it your way that's the way you
should do it have a great day everybody
see you tomorrow
